The panel opened with a performance by an all-male drum line joined midway by an all-female dance troupe clad in white and carrying electric torches.
This was followed, after some banter between the moderator and producer Rana Daggubati, a panel guest who practically served as co-moderator, by a sizzle reel devoted to...

Actor, writer and director Celyn Jones is the triple threat no one saw coming. Originally from Wales, where he still films a lot of his projects, Jones built his career first as an actor of both theater and screen before pivoting to writing features such as “Set Fire to the Stars,” which starred Elijah Wood, “The Vanishing” featuring Gerard Butler and “Six Minutes to Midnight,” which he co-wrote with Eddie Izzard co-wrote and stars both Izzard and Judi Dench.
Jones’ latest project, “The Almond and the Seahorse,” also represents his directorial feature debut. Jones co-wrote the film, which is about two couples dealing with traumatic brain injuries, with Kaite O’Reilly (on whose play it is based) and co-directs with Tom Stern (“Changeling”). He also stars in it alongside Charlotte Gainsbourg (“Melancholia”), Trine Dyrholm (“Queen of Hearts”), Meera Syal (“Yesterday”) and Rebel Wilson (“Pitch Perfect”). The film, which premieres at the...

Everyone’s involved in a hustle nowadays. The economy is in the trash, the job market is a joke, and making ends meets is a constant struggle for many. If you’re comfortable with where you’re at, consider yourself fortunate. Not everyone has that luxury, and in David Yate’s The Pain Hustlers, one woman is about to discover what it’s like to play dirty for those pulling the wool over the eyes of the public.
Catherine O’Hara, Andy Garcia, and Jay Duplass are joining Chris Evans and Emily Blunt in Yate’s upcoming film, debuting on Netflix. Brian d’Arcy James and Chloe Coleman also star.
A crime drama that warps perceptions of the American Dream, the official logline for The Pain Hustlers says the film follows an unemployed “blue-collar woman struggling to raise her daughter [who] takes a job at a failing pharmaceutical start-up, only to get involved in a dangerous racketeering scheme.

The women of Renée Webster’s “How To Please A Woman” have problems. Multiple women, multiple problems: they’re disrespected at work, they’re depressed about their bodies, their husbands don’t give them the time of day, and on top of everything, their homes are messy. If only there was a service, or a person, who could solve all of this. Lucky — maybe — there is.
Enter Gina (Sally Phillips), a newly 50-year-old woman with an idea and a plan. From there, she turns that venture into a business, hiring a group of eager men from a recently shut-down moving company to be the cleaners and helpers. Revamped with a Latino cast, the 2022 iteration of “Father of the Bride” harnesses the generational and cultural divide between immigrants and their children to put a spin on this romantic comedy premise 30 years after the release of the previous version starring Steve Martin and Diane Keaton (and 72 years after Spencer Tracy walked Elizabeth Taylor down the aisle).

Tom Hiddleston said he was “really pleased and privileged” to bring the Loki’s Norse mythology — of queerness and gender fluidity — to the MCU canon in the eponymous series “Loki.” During a conversation with Lily James for Variety’s Actors on Actors, the actor championed it as a “small step” that was “really important” for him to portray.
In “Loki” Episode 3, a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it comment from Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) posits whether the God of Mischief has had any romantic relationships as of late with “would-be princesses or perhaps, another prince.” Loki answers that there’s been a “bit of both.” Earlier on, in the pilot episode, an Easter egg confirms Loki’s gender as fluid.
“It’s a small step. There’s so much more to do. But the Marvel Cinematic Universe has to reflect the world we live in,” the “Crimson Peak” actor told James. “So it was...

If the unmarked enemy aircraft, mirrored visors and carefully evasive language of Joseph Kosinksi’s “Top Gun: Maverick” tell us anything, it’s that Hollywood has learned to avoid political specifics in the delivery of grandstanding blockbuster entertainment. So one can be forgiven for coming to “Rebel” with hackles raised and offence-o-meters on red alert, as it milks Hollywoodish action-movie thrills (and even a few surreal musical numbers) from the highly charged scenario of one young Belgian’s recruitment into a Syrian Isis cell. But there’s an unabashed sincerity in how directing team Adil & Bilall realize their foolhardy ambition to make a serious-minded cautionary tale in the guise of a flashy thrill-ride. You might even start to root for “Rebel,” rather like you would a circus elephant can-canning across a minefield, and managing with surprising dexterity to go quite some distance without blowing itself to bits.

The newest Marvel superhero coming to Disney+ is Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), a teenage girl who idolizes Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and wishes she were a superhero herself. The series is based on the wildly popular comic of the same name, and has been a huge step forward in Muslim representation in superhero stories. Morrocan Belgian directing duo Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi are best known for directing the wildly fun (and violent) "Bad Boys for Life," though they also recently debuted their musical war drama "Rebel" at Cannes Film Festival. "Rebel" is a journey of suffering, possibly the bleakest and most challenging film of this year's Cannes, and definitely not what you first think of when imagining a Midnight Screening selection. And yet, Adil & Bilall, the breakout directing duo behind "Bad Boys for Life," manage to make the grueling story of two brothers targeted and radicalized by Isis into a compelling, action- and music-packed drama about indoctrination and inaction with an ending you won't be able to easily shake out.

As a procedural drama centrally interested in the radicalization of a young Muslim boy in Belgium, Adil & Bilall’s “Rebel” pulsates with terrible inevitability. Falling behind at school, with an adored older brother already having made the trip to Syria and a trafficker whispering in his ear, it’s less a question of if Nassim is going to find himself on the Jihadist frontline, but when.

Prolific directors’ latest film ’Rebel’ plays out of competition in Cannes
When Belgian-Moroccan filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah first met at film school in Belgium together, they were drawn together for very obvious reasons.
“Everyone [else] was white,” Adil remembers.
Bilall was the only other Moroccan. “That’s why he talked to me. He said, ‘are you Moroccan’ and that’s how it started.”
Thus began a beautiful friendship which has seen the duo directing movies that have caused riots in Belgian cinemas (2015’s Black) and have topped US box office charts (2020’s Bad Boys For Life starring Will...

“Rebel,” from Belgian directors Adil & Bilall, follows the story of a young Muslim boy called Nassim who longs to be reunited with his elder brother Kamal, who goes to Syria to help victims of the war before being forced to join a militia. Radical recruiters spot Nassim as an easy target, promising they can reunite him with Kamal. Only the boys’ mother, Leila, has a hope of saving Nassim.
“This is a very personal story for us,” Adil & Bilall said. “It happened to people we know, friends and family. Under other circumstances we could have been one of these characters. We want to tell the story of this Jihad. Jihad has multiple meanings. It is the struggle; the internal struggle we feel within ourselves, the fight to spread love and righteousness, but it is also the Holy War, used in a perverted way to justify barbaric acts. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the Belgian directing duo behind “Bad Boys For Life” and Cannes’ Midnight Screening title “Rebel,” are developing “2000,” a film based on Dirk Bracke’s “Straks doet het geen pijn meer.” It will mark the pair’s return to Belgium after lining up “Ms. Marvel” for Disney+ and “Batgirl” for HBO Max.
Bracke’s book, whose title translates into the phrase “soon it will be alright,” is being adapted by El Arbi, Fallah and Bulle Decarpentries (“Carnivores”).
The project, which will be El Arbi and Fallah’s first film in Flemish, reteams the pair with Nabil Ben Yadir at 10.80 Films (“Les Barons”), with whom they made “Gangsta,” and with Bracke who penned the book on which “Black,” their critically acclaimed sophomore outing, was based. “Black” won a flurry of awards, including Toronto’s Discovery award.

Netflix is ringing in the new year in atypical fashion. Throughout 2021, the streaming giant’s original offerings swelled while its library titles shrunk. With its list of new releases for January 2022, however, Netflix is expanding its non-original market quite a bit.
Jan. 1 sees the arrival of a truly stunning amount of impressive non-Netflix movies and TV shows. The big titles available on the first of the month include: 300, Interview with the Vampire, Paranormal Activity, Superman Returns, Terminator 2, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and much more. Later on in the month, Netflix is also set to add Phantom Thread (Jan. 16) to its roster.

Though Netflix is lighter on original content in January 2022, there is still plenty of intriguing titles to check out.

We lost a lot of good shows this year.
We also lost a lot of shows that were starting to become must-see TV.
Now, we're left with only the cliffhangers and the wasted potential.
Scroll down to find out our picks for the TV cancellations we can't get over.
Good Girls
Good Girls deserved to ride off into the sunset, telling its completed story.
After a fantastic first season, Good Girls struggled over the following seasons, primarily due to repetitive storylines and somewhat stagnant character growth. But Good Girls Season 4 was a lot of fun.
We finally got an expanded look into primary antagonist Rio's personal life, and the ladies were at their very best, giving us a lot of solid episodes over their longest season.
There were more stories to tell, and it truly sucks we're cheated out of more time with Beth, Ruby, Stan, Rio, and even Dean.

"We're not there yet, but at least we're free." "Settling for 'good enough' won't change the world..." The Match Factory has debuted an official promo trailer for the German film Dear Thomas, from filmmaker Andreas Kleinert. This black & white biopic is about a German "poetic rebel" named Thomas Brasch, and it just won Best Film playing at the 2021 Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival earlier this month. "Rebel. Poet. Revolutionary: Dear Thomas is a declaration of love to the writer Thomas Brasch." The film tells the story of the writer and artist Thomas Brasch, who escapes the constraints of the Gdr in the 1970s by setting out for the West, but does not find fulfillment there either. The expressive imagery and the phenomenal ensemble with an unleashed Albrecht Schuch in the title role make this artist''s biography a cinematic masterpiece. The cast includes Jella Haase, Ioana Iacob, Jörg Schüttauf, Anja Schneider,...
