The final box office fate of Paramount/Hasbro’s animated film “Transformers One” was never going to be written on opening weekend. But after a soft $25 million domestic start, now it’s up in the air whether this origin tale for Optimus Prime and Megatron will strike a chord with moviegoers who aren’t already fans of the ’80s franchise.
Hitting theaters a year after the solid theatrical run of Paramount’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” “Transformers One” is part of a broader effort by the studio to build its name among families and general audiences alike as a major player in the theatrical animation space.
The Melrose studio, which earned a respectable $844 million in North America in 2023 but saw its theatrical revenues plummet 40% last quarter to $138 million amid strike-related delays that pushed “Mission: Impossible 8” to 2025, is using top IP like “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and “SpongeBob...

Although their comedic chemistry is undeniable, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele‘s careers have gone in different directions.
Nearly a decade after their Comedy Central sketch comedy show Key & Peele ended, Key admitted that he and his former onscreen partner “don’t see each other that often anymore” amid their busy lives on opposite coasts.
“Which is, to me, a tragedy,” he told People, noting that “your lives start to evolve and move in different directions.”
After the duo first appeared together on Fox’s Mad TV in 2004, they landed their own self-titled show on Comedy Central, which ran for five seasons from 2012 to 2015. The series earned them an Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series in 2016.
Key and Peele also appeared together in 2016’s Keanu, which was co-written by Peele. Additionally, they’ve voiced characters together in Storks (2016), Toy Story 4 (2019) and Wendell & Wild (2022).

Warner Bros.’ “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is set to pull off an upset at the box office by snagging its third No. 1 weekend from an underperforming “Transformers One.”
The Tim Burton sequel is earning an estimated $26 million in its third weekend to bring its domestic total to $226 million, having passed the domestic run of fellow 2024 Warner release “Godzilla x Kong” back on Thursday.
“Transformers One,” meanwhile, is opening to a lower-than-projected $25 million from 3,978 theaters despite strong reviews from critics and audiences. The $75 million animated film from Paramount and Hasbro was projected for a $30 million start, with some independent projections having it matching the $33.7 million opening of Paramount’s summer family film “If.”
“If” legged out to a respectable $111 million domestic theatrical run, and Paramount will be hoping for similar legs for “Transformers One” given its excellent reception, including an A on CinemaScore, 5/5 on PostTrak, and Rotten Tomatoes scores of 89% critics and 98% audience.

Paramount and Hasbro Entertainment’s Transformers One is shifting into high gear at the box office with $3.3M in Thursday preview screenings. The “More Than Meets the Eye” premiere began on Wednesday, with fan screenings at 7 pm and Thursday previews starting at 5 pm. The first Transformers animated film in nearly 40 years is performing better than other family-oriented films this year, including Paramount’s If ($1.75M), The Garfield Movie ($2.3M), and Trolls Band Together. Transformers One even drove past Travis Knight’s live-action Bumblebee film, which bowed to $2.15M.
With Transformers One rolling out to 3,978 domestic theaters, including IMAX and Plf screens, the animated origin story could burn enough rubber to reach $34M over its opening weekend. According to analysts, if positive word of mouth spreads and parents want to beat what remains of the heat in some areas, Transformers One could collect $40M or more. It’s worth noting that...

Paramount/Hasbro Entertainment’s “Transformers One” is looking to keep the September momentum going at the box office, earning $3.36 million from Thursday preview and advance fan screenings as it expands to 3,978 domestic locations today.
That result is just slightly below the $3.8 million preview total of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” which opened in August 2023 to $28 million. But it does top the $1.75 million preview total of Paramount’s family film “If,” which opened to $33 million last May. “Transformers One” is expected to do slightly better with a $30-34 million start.
Reviews for the film have been strong, carrying an 85% Rotten Tomatoes score that is second only to the 2018 film “Bumblebee” for the highest scoring “Transformers” film ever. Paramount is hoping that such strong word-of-mouth will bring in casual fans of the franchise over the coming weeks, even with competition from DreamWorks’ “The Wild Robot” coming next week.

The decision to cast Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Victor Von Doom is an unexpected and exciting choice. Marvel Studios and its casting director, Sarah Finn, have a great track record of casting the right actors for their characters. While some people wish Marvel had hired a Romani actor for the role of Doctor Doom, there's no denying that the San Diego Comic-Con announcement has generated buzz, sparked many discussions, and led to plenty theories among fans, similar to the excitement during the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Infinity Saga days.
The Oscar-winning actor first played the role of Tony Stark in 2008's Iron Man, and 2019 saw him receiving a fitting farewell in Avengers: Endgame. Now, he makes a dramatic return to the franchise he initiated, appearing as one of the Marvel Universe's most formidable antagonists in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. It's a natural progression, almost like a poetic sequence.

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman became an icon. He first starred in Captain America: Civil War, and later appeared in Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
Tragically, the actor, who was also known for his work in movies like Da 5 Bloods, 21 Bridges, and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, died in 2020 after a lengthy battle with cancer. His illness was kept private until his death in August of that year, and the news of his passing sent shockwaves not only through Hollywood but across the globe.
We've since learned that the Black Panther star never stopped fighting, and his final MCU performance was as Star-Lord in Disney+'s What If...? Boseman received a well-deserved posthumous Emmy for "Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance" for his work in that series.

Katya Martín, who is best known for her role in the short-lived ABC series Promised Land, and Catharine Daddario, who was recently seen in If – and yes, if the last name made you wonder, she is the sister of Alexandra Daddario from Mayfair Witches, True Detective, and Texas Chainsaw 3D – have signed on to star in the horror comedy Muffled, Deadline reports. Filming is expected to begin in the Greater New Orleans area sometime in early September.
Muffled marks the feature debut of writer/director Stephen McNamee, who has a decade of short films to his name. The story McNamee has crafted for this one follows Nora (Martín) and Harper (Daddario) as they return to their hometown to investigate the disappearance of a childhood friend. While interviewing old acquaintances, they discover that their questions are unwelcome, and soon their search takes a dark turn.

The summer box office is winding down, as Amazon MGM’s social thriller “Blink Twice” and Lionsgate’s action remake “The Crow” both look to open beneath a trio of holdovers.
“Blink Twice” wins the race between new releases though, with a $2.8 million gross across Friday and preview screenings from 3,067 locations. It’s not exactly a big splash for the Zoë Kravitz-directed thriller, which stars Naomi Ackie and Channing Tatum and follows a woman who visits a tech billionaire’s private island and uncovers an insidious conspiracy. But the MGM production carries a light $20 million production budget — it’s off to a solid enough start if it can keep momentum. Reviews have been positive, though audience survey firm Cinema Score turned in a B- grade (standard middling for a horror film).

Daniel Fienberg: How the blazes have we reached the end of the summer already? Sorry, Matthew McConaughey in True Detective. Time isn’t a flat circle. It’s a vortex, and the summer of 2024 got sucked right in.
Since June, politics has given us The Worst Debate in History, an assassination attempt, a new Republican vice-presidential candidate (and attendant memes), a sitting president dropping out of the race, a new Democratic presidential nominee, and the meteoric rise of her avuncular running mate, whom 95 percent of Americans couldn’t have picked out of a lineup in May.
Smack in between two political conventions, our attentions shifted to Paris for the Olympics, where we marveled at the largely E. coli- and entirely shark-free beauty of the Seine, celebrated Simone Biles, ogled French pole vaulters, held our breath through one impossible comeback after another, and attempted to make sense of competitive breakdancing...

Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is the most alluring Shonen series that has been airing since 1999. The series features everything that is essential for featuring a unique fruit that is essentially the manifestation of someone’s dream. The series features a rare treasured fruit called Devil Fruit, which grants limitless ability to its users in exchange for their ability to swim.
Monkey D. Luffy. Credits: Toei Animation
These fruits can be categorized into three types: Paramecia, Logia, and Zoan. However, there is one fruit that might possess the most broken power that can’t be overcome by a Haki master like Shanks.
If you have not guessed it by now, don’t worry because it’s none other than the Captain of the Barto Club, Bartolomeo. The super rookie possesses the Bari Bari no Mi (Barrier-Barrier Fruit), which might be hands-down one of the strongest Devil Fruits shown in the title.

Disney/20th Century’s “Alien: Romulus” is keeping the August box office strong with a $41.5 million opening weekend from 3,885 theaters, topping the $36.1 million opening of its 2017 Fox-distributed predecessor, “Alien: Covenant.”

The Boys ascended to its highest mark ever in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for the week of its fourth season finale, and Netflix’s movie Hillbilly Elegy had a resurgence after Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance — whose memoir is the source material for the film — became the Republican nominee for vice president.
The Boys recorded 1.33 billion minutes of viewing time on Prime Video for the week of July 15-21, finishing first among all titles in Nielsen’s rankings for the first time (the season four finale debuted July 18). That’s the biggest viewing total for the series that Nielsen has ever recorded — slightly ahead of the 1.29 billion minutes it had the week of June 17-23.

Have we really reached the penultimate episode?

Dammit, it’s just mean to bring Evil to a screeching halt.

The #1 movie of 2024 (“Inside Out 2”), as well as #3 (“Despicable Me 4”), and #7 (“Kung Fu Panda”) are animated features. The medium’s representations continue in streaming results, with Universal releasing “Despicable Me 4” on PVOD last week. An immediate #1 at both iTunes and Fandango, it remained at #5 in theaters last weekend. It added another $8 million for a $330 million totall as usual, marketing for home viewing might have boosted its box office.
And somehow, Sony’s 2017 “The Emoji Movie” is now a hit. It grossed $217 million worldwide amidst blistering reviews; it debuted on Netflix this weekend and jumped to #1. It reinforces the notion that animation is foolproof as long as it seems fresh.
It is one of four animated titles on Netflix’s list, which includes one Netflix original, as well as “Trolls Band Together” and “The Lorax” from Universal. However, the eight-month run of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” may be over.

Tyler Perry’s latest film “Divorce in the Black” not only drew strong viewership — Nielsen reported that it hit more than 498 million minutes watched in its first four days of availability on Amazon Prime Video — but according to Amazon, the soapy drama has also driven more sign-ups to Prime Video in the U.S. than any Amazon MGM Studios-produced movie to-date.
The declaration comes after “Divorce in the Black” made its debut on the Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming chart, where it came in as the No. 3 movie of the July 8-14 viewing window behind Netflix’s “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” and “If” on Paramount+. However, there’s a fly in the White Claw. The foreign takes are way, way down, to the point that it may force studios to reassess the budget parameters that can actually turn a profit.
We looked at the top 10 summer grosses in the U.S./Canada for 2019, 2023, and 2024 to date (skipping the Covid-impacted 2020-2022). The results show a sharp drop in share of foreign gross even as domestic recovers.

“House of the Dragon” might’ve already closed out its second installment with a season-high viewership on HBO and Max, but its Season 2 midpoint is breaking Nielsen records.
After the “Game of Thrones” spin-off series debuted its explosive Episode 4 on Sunday, July 7, “House of the Dragon” tallied up 1.27 billion viewing minutes during the interval of July 8 through July 14, per Nielsen. For the first time ever, “House of the Dragon” ranked as the most-watched streaming program after slowly gaining traction during the first half of Season 2.
Viewership for “House of the Dragon” during the week of July 8 exceeded that of “Bluey,” which took the No. 2 spot on the overall most-streamed programs list with 1.08 billion viewing minutes on Disney+, as well as “Suits,” which is seeing another streaming resurgence with 1.07 billion...

Overall streaming numbers for July 8-14 came down a fair amount from the record-breaking previous week. HBO’s House of the Dragon, however, was virtually even with its prior viewing total — which was good enough to move it to the top spot for the first time.
House of the Dragon amassed 1.27 billion minutes of viewing on Max (not including viewing on HBO’s cable channels), just a smidge below the 1.3 billion it had the week before. With the two titles ahead of it the previous week, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and Suits, each falling by significant amounts, the HBO show moved up to No. 1.
Suits fell by 28 percent week-to-week to 1.07 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Peacock, which was good for third place overall, slightly behind Bluey (1.08 billion minutes on Disney+) and just ahead of The Boys (1.05 billion for Prime Video), which had its fifth consecutive week over the billion-minute mark.

Paramount Global leadership reported a $5.99bn write-down of the cable business as they acknowledged the ongoing decline in linear TV and prepared for the transaction with Skydance Media.
In a mixed second quarter that brought an overall 11% revenue drop and saw the streaming business swing into its first quarterly profit during the period ended June 30, co-CEOs Brian Robbins, George Cheeks, and Chris McCarthy said they will start to lay off 15% of the US-based workforce in the coming weeks, equating to approximately 2,000 people.
That is part of previously announced $500m in cost savings, which are part of $2bn in savings identified by Skydance Media.

This summer’s hottest trend? Revising the value of your cable channels.
On Wednesday, Warner Bros. Discovery realized its cable networks were worth $9 billion less than it originally thought. On Thursday, Paramount Global reduced the book value of its own cable channels by nearly $6 billion. Wbd’s internal audit was triggered by its loss of NBA rights; Paramount recorded the “goodwill impairment charge” based on what Skydance is paying for the company and its networks. These changes do not impact cash flow.
With the giant accounting maneuver, Paramount Global posted adjusted earnings of 54 cents per share, well above the 12 cents per share anticipated by Wall Street. Without it, the company’s Q2 operating-income loss was a whopping $5.32 billion. Paramount whiffed on media analysts’ consensus expectation of $7.21 billion in revenue, reporting $6.813 billion.
Back on the plus side, Paramount Global turned its first operating profit — $26 million — ever from streaming. Paramount+ still lost money in the quarter,...

Richard Gadd’s Netflix hit, Baby Reindeer, produced for a song and released with little fanfare, beat the odds to become a surprise sensation. It made overnight stars of Gadd and his co-star Jessica Gunning, who have been adjusting to life in the spotlight ever since. With the tabloid press, particularly in their native Britain, stirring up reams of controversy, Joe Utichi travels across London to meet Gadd and Gunning, as they place their emphasis on the lives their show is changing for the better.
Richard Gadd is doing his best to stay anonymous, though it’s no longer all that easy for him. Since April 11, his has been one of the world’s most recognizable faces. He transformed physically for Baby Reindeer, losing weight to better recall the gaunt version of his younger self on which he based his new show, but his large blue eyes and high cheek...

The film also saw Reynolds’ wife, Blake Lively, play an alternate-reality version of Deadpool. However, the husband-wife duo have once again collaborated in the upcoming romantic drama film It Ends With Us.

As a result, fans who are still riding high on the multiverse shenanigans of Deadpool & Wolverine took to social media and joked about Reynolds’ involvement in the film. Marcus Theatres saw revenue and profit dip last quarter but is the latest exhibitor to report a soft April and May leading into a notable positive shift in June as the industry shakes off the impact of the Hollywood strikes last year.
CEO Greg Marcus noted that there weren’t fewer films in the first half, just not the right mix. “It has to be what I call a normal slate. If you release 100 films and not one of them is tentpole, that is not a normal slate,” he said on a post-earnings call with analysts. There were plenty of films in the earlier part of 2024, he said “and I’m glad they were putting movies out there. But not tentpoles.”
The market still needs big and small films. “You’ve got to take enough swings and you got to get people back in the habit,” he said. “Twenty years from now,...

The bond between the Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece is one of the biggest strengths that the crew has had ever since they started sailing. They have been through some of the toughest times and still managed to come on top of it only because they trust each other, especially their captain, Monkey D. Luffy, who aspired to become the Pirate King.

Sony is already ahead of the game without having invested hundreds of millions of dollars into its own streaming platform. This week, once again, results show this is no barrier to Sony’s success in reaching home viewers while generating strong revenues.
“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” premiered on VOD for a $19.99 rental last Tuesday, 47 days after its theatrical release. It remains in the box office top 10 at #7, with a $192 million domestic gross so far. Both iTunes (ranking by transaction) and Fandango (which calculates by revenue) rank it #1.
Meantime, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is the latest of Sony’s films to transition to initial streaming on Netflix about four months after release (and a strong VOD run). It took first place there immediately when it debuted last Tuesday, staying atop all week.
Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1” (Warner Bros.) was displaced from the top spot on both charts.

Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds are teaming up for the big screen to star in, perhaps, one of the most baffling cinematic experiences from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date, i.e. Deadpool & Wolverine. And yet, as savage and rugged as they look onscreen while on their way to defeat their common enemy, all of their brutality pretty much washed out while doing the Hot Ones challenge.
A still from Deadpool and Wolverine. | Credit: Marvel Studios.
While they appeared to answer some previously unanswered questions about the movie, the events that unfolded were nothing short of terrifying. This is because, by the end of the challenge, Jackman was pretty much crying a lot more than he did while shooting his iconic Les Misérables. If anything, this duo’s reaction has us seriously wondering: How did Elizabeth Olsen do it so easily?!

After another great summer blockbuster this past weekend, we get one of the most anticipated movies of the year, as well as the first from Marvel Studios since last December. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably know that Marvel and Disney’s “Deadpool and Wolverine” brings together the popular characters played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman — not for the first time, mind you. Everyone involved with this new Marvel movie, including director Shawn Levy, is probably hoping that everyone has forgotten about 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” and thankfully, they probably have.
Despite the presence of Jackman’s Wolverine, this is very much the third film in the “X-Men” sub-franchise that began with 2016’s “Deadpool,” which kicked off a successful run of R-rated superhero movies not necessarily meant for children. That movie and the sequel for Reynolds...

By far the biggest of the May movie releases, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (Disney) is #1 in its initial week on both iTunes and Fandango’s top 10 VOD lists.
This comes 60 days after its theatrical debut, with the longer-than-average window now typical for most Disney titles after aggressive home viewing placement during and right after Covid.
What’s surprising is how easily Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders” (Focus) beat out Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” among other new releases. The former just passed the $20 million domestic gross mark over its fourth weekend. “Garfield” is at $91 million, four and a half times bigger, and part of a period where animated titles dominate both on screen and at home.
“The Bikeriders” was #2 most of the week at iTunes and #2 at Fandango for the full-week chart. It’s now #3 at iTunes, behind “Civil War” (A24), surging at a reduced price after significant success at $19.99 earlier.

Our top pick for an awards contender to stream this week, crime drama “The Bikeriders,” has some names attached to it that have been in the conversation in awards seasons past. It stars Emmy and Tony winner Jodie Comer and Academy Award nominees Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, and Michael Shannon. Moreover, it’s written and directed by Jeff Nichols, whose previous film, 2016’s “Loving,” earned Ruth Negga an Academy Award nomination. While “The Bikeriders” looks more likely than not to miss out on major awards this year, don’t count Comer out yet in lead actress races. She is excellent in the film.
“The Bikeriders” is set in the midwest in the tumultuous years of the mid-to-late 1960s, and follows the rise and fall of Johnny Davis (Hardy), the founder of an outlaw motorcycle club, as seen through the eyes of his protegé’s wife, Kathy Cross (Comer). The club...
