Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters an outdoor garden to find Tipton seated on a high-backed wicker chair with a round glass table before him, on which there is a large bowl of water. Tipton is handling a paper object and only his hands are visible to viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

    John Beresford Tipton : Mike,

[indicating the paper object in his hand]

John Beresford Tipton : have you ever seen one of these?

Michael Anthony : It's a Japanese paper flower, isn't it, sir? It's fascinating to watch them unfold when they are immersed in water.

John Beresford Tipton : [Tipton places the paper flower into the bowl of water]  A man's life should be like that: unfolding gradually until, finally, there it is, in full perfection. But sometime something goes wrong. It never develops properly, and the man himself remains closed up.

[Tipton hands an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Here's our next millionaire, Mike. I want to see what happens if a man like that is given another chance - to grow.

[Anthony accepts the envelope and bows]

  • Michael Anthony : [Examining a file folder, to the viewers]  This is the case history that developed after Mr. Tipton gave me the check that night in his library: the case history of Carl Bronson.

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony has located Carl Bronson living in a flophouse. He finds him napping in the lobby, his face covered by a newspaper]  Are you Carl Bronson?

Carl Bronson : [Arousing and tossing the newspaper]  That's right.

Michael Anthony : [Looking around, as other boarders are present]  Is there someplace where we can talk?

[Spotting an empty room adjacent to the lobby]

Michael Anthony : In there will be all right.

Carl Bronson : [Anthony and Bronson go into the next room]  Who are you? How'd you find me?

Michael Anthony : Through your manager, Mr. Eddie Wilson. I have something for you, Mr. Bronson.

[Opens his briefcase, withdraws a check and hands it to Bronson]

Carl Bronson : [Scoffs]  What is this? A joke? Who'd give me this amount of money?

Michael Anthony : It's a cashier's check - a gift from an unknown benefactor, a man who insists on remaining anonymous.

Carl Bronson : Why should anybody wanna help me?

Michael Anthony : [Taking out a document from his briefcase]  Maybe you underestimate yourself, Mr. Bronson. There is one condition: You must not tell anyone the exact amount of this money, that is, except your wife.

    Carl Bronson : My wife.

Michael Anthony : Yes. If you violate that condition, the remainder of the money will be reclaimed. Now, if you will sign this, please.

    [Bronson signs the agreement]

  • [first lines]

Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony. For many years, I was executive secretary to the late multibillionaire John Beresford Tipton. Among my duties was the unique job of delivering $1,000,000, which Mr. Tipton frequently gave away, tax-free, to a total stranger. From his fabulous 60,000-acre estate, Silverstone, Mr. Tipton carried on his study of human nature. Every subject in his vast store of knowledge was material for close analysis, and it was always related to the behavior and destiny of man.
