- The year is 1946. The world is black and white. And Lucifer is the star of his own noir detective story featuring familiar characters in new roles.
- To entertain Trixie when everyone else misses game night, Lucifer tells her the "story" of how he solved a murder case in 1940s New York City. Some of Lucifer's associates play different roles, as he tells a tale about Maze's mother Lilith and how she gained mortality.—Gislef
- Lucifer sets up for a game night of 'Monopoly' in his penthouse. Trixie arrives alone and Lucifer wonders where Chloe and the other women are. Trixie explains that she's staying at Dan's. Lucifer is shocked that Chloe isn't there for game night when she always shows up for it, and wonders if Chloe mentioned anything about being a gift from God. Trixie isn't interested in "grown-up problems", and Lucifer suggests that they go to the bar. The girl asks Lucifer to tell her a story instead, about something real so he doesn't have to make anything up.
Trixie asks Lucifer to tell her the story of his ring, and Lucifer gives in. They sit down together and Lucifer talks about the Devil went to New York City, in 1946.

In 1946 NYC, Lucifer goes to meet an old friend that asked to meet Lucifer for a drink at the Garden Club. Lucifer enters the club and sits at the bar, and singer Lilith--Maze's mother--performs on stage. Lilith looks just like her daughter. Once she's done, she sees Lucifer in the crowd and winks at him. When Lucifer goes to talk to Lilith, two bouncers stop him. One says that Lilith is the owner Tommy Stomponato's girl. Lilith comes over and calls them off.
Lucifer and Lilith go back to Lilith's dressing room, and Lilith says that she's spent the last couple of centuries raising hell at gin joints. She says that someone stole her ring, and Lucifer offers to distract her with Hemingway or a brothel. Lilith says that the ring is the only thing in the universe that means anything to her, and she's going to get it back with Lucifer's help. Lucifer wonders why he would do that, and Lilith tells him that he owes her. The Devil gives in and agrees.
Going to the office of PI Jack Monroe, Lucifer asks his "old friend", who looks a lot like Dan. When Trixie objects, Lucifer makes Jack a woman-Chloe--and he shows her a poster of Lilith wearing the ring. Jack wonders why she should be involved, and Lucifer tosses her a large wad of money.
Lucifer and Jack go to the club and Jack goes over to talk to the bartender. The bartender, Gerdy, looks like Linda, and she says that word on the street is that a newcomer was lurking around Lilith's dressing room the night the ring disappeared: Lucky Larry. Gerdy gives Jack and Lucifer a description, which includes an eyepatch.
Jack spots a "rat looking to squeal" seated at a table, and goes over to talk to him. The man, Benny, says that he's seen Larry around and asks her to meet him out back in the alley so he can give her the full story. Jack signals to Lucifer and they go out back, Benny comes up and tells them to watch their backs, laughs, and runs off. The two bouncers from earlier and one of them punches Jack. Jack punches her attacker back, and a woman emerges from the shadows. It's Tommy, who looks like Ella.
Tommy says that she doesn't like folks asking questions in her club. She tells Jack and Lucifer to refrain from doing so, and tells Lucifer that he's lucky he's a friend of Lilith's but not to get too friendly. Tommy then leaves with her thugs.
Back at Jack's office, Jack checks her bruises and figures Larry will check up sooner or later. Lucifer goes off dancing, while Jack goes home to her wife Shirley--who looks like Charlotte. Shirley tries to make conversation, and finally says that she knows Jack is still sore at her. Jack abruptly pushes away his dinner plate, and there's a knock at the door. When Jack answers it, she discovers that Larry is there. He collapses on the doorstep, a knife in his back.
The police are summoned and secure the crime scene, and Lucifer arrives and flirts with Shirley. She says that she already has a dance partner and looks over at Jack longingly. Jack finishes a phone call and tells Lucifer to stay away from Shirley, and then says that she talked to her informant and learned Larry got into it with someone at the docks the day before, William McKinnon. The PI says that she'll bust McKinnon's chops in the morning. She goes to her office to sleep,
The next day, Lucifer and Jack go to McKinnon's manor. Lucifer asks what happened between Shirley and Jack, and Jack says that she learned from one of her old buddies that he paid Shirley to go out with Jack. Shirley was a call girl, and Jack was her final trick. Lucifer doesn't see the problem, and Jack admits that she doesn't leave because she loves Shirley and Shirley says that she loves Jack. Jack hasn't been unable to just forget about the information.
The duo arrive at a manor and talk to McKinnon--Dan. Lucifer immediately asks where the ring is, then goes to look for it himself when McKinnon acts ignorant. As he looks around, Jack questions McKinnon about Larry. They tell McKinnon that Larry ended up dead, and McKinnon says that he would never kill Larry. He was having his portrait painted as Hannibal when Larry was killed, giving him an alibi. McKinnon admits that from time to time he bought "trinkets" from Larry, and admits that he didn't serve in the Army like Jack did. McKinnon says that he met Larry on the docks, although normally they meet at Larry's apartment, and gives them the address
Back at the club, Lilith gets a drink and talks to Gerdy about the ring. She says that she was married to Adam a long go, even though things weren't good between them or Adam's father. Lilith took the stone in her ring on the way out of the Garden, and the ring reminds her that she doesn't need Adam or his family, or anybody. Gerdy says that she was married to her high school sweetheart, Bill, and they wrote each other every day until Bill got wounded. He was transferred to a VA but the doctors can't save him. She insists that every day with Bill is a gift, and not knowing they have much time left makes it that much sweeter.
Jack and Lucifer go to Larry's apartment and Lucifer dismisses it as a hovel. Jack works out that Larry fought with his killer, escaped out the window, and got stabbed in the back while doing so. Lucifer finds a piece of an expensive cigar on the floor and shows it to Jack. Tommy smoked the same cigar. The duo go to Tommy's manor, and Jack figures Tommy posed as a buyer to get the ring for Lilith. Lucifer wonders why Tommy hasn't given Lilith the ring back, and then they find a pool of blood on the floor. It's dripping down from a dead thug on the second floor.
The duo go upstairs and find Tommy dead in her bed, an Egyptian mask and hieroglyphics on her face. Her heart is cut out, and a letter opener is on the nearby desk with the same insignia as the one in Larry's back. Lucifer finds the ring case beneath the bed, but the ring is gone. He identifies the hieroglyphic as the Eye of Horus, the "Secret Eye", and Jack says that she knows where to find the painter.
That night, Jack takes Lucifer to a shop. The proprietor asks if they've come seeking books. He complains that they're not there for the secret cult ceremony, and Lucifer hastily says that they are. The proprietor directs them to the ceremony in the next room, and they go in and ring for the high priest. Melvin the Magnificent--Amenadiel--pops up from behind a counter and says that he's a board-approved shaman and justice of the peace.
The duo say that they're looking for the removal of a heart, and Melvin directs them to the Ceremony of Anubis. The ceremony Melvin offers includes a ceremonial mask and a live chicken. Melvin offers the half-price economy package, and says that the ancients believe death is power. Jack asks if Melvin felt powerful when he cut out Tommy's heart, and Melvin is apparently shocked that Tommy is dead.
Lucifer uses his power on Melvin, and Melvin says that he desires a 1941 Pontiac Torpedo. He says that his "parishioners" would pay top dollar for even a fake Lilith ring. His parishioners can account for his presence at the shop when Tommy was killed, and admits that he's been selling maps to Lilith's place for years but can't identify all the buyers.
Later, Lucifer meets with Lilith and tells her that she'll have to live without her ring. He offers to repay his debt some other way, but Lilith demands the ring. Lucifer points out her children to Hell, and that he didn't know he needed the "army". However, he admits that he needed them so he wouldn't be alone and so he's forever in Lilith's debt.
Lucifer asks how people got the idea the ring made Lilith immortal. Lilith explains that she came to America with Cortez, but ended up with Montezuma. Some priests threw her in a volcano as a sacrifice, Lilith survived, and someone spread the legend. Lilith says that the ring doesn't do anything, and Lucifer figures the thief will be looking for a way to make the ring work. Lucifer tells Lilith that they need a high priest, a jeweler, and a distraction to get the ring back.
Lucifer gets a bracelet, puts it on Lilith's wrist, and has Melvin spread the word that the ring only works when attached to the bracelet. The thief will come for the bracelet, and this time when they sneak into the dressing room while Lilith is singing, Jack will be watching and catch the intruder.
Shirley poses as a cigarette girl in the audience, and Jack thanks her for helping. She says that she's going back to Des Moines to move in with her mother after the case is over, rather than stay with Jack. Jack takes that in stride and tells her to get the bracelet and parade it around the club, then take it back to the dressing room and put it in the safe. Jack tells Shirley to be careful and Shirley walks off.
Lilith is watching, and asks Lucifer if he's ever emotionally connected with a human. Lucifer says that he never has, and Lilith looks at Jack enviously. Lilith then takes the stage, complains that her bracelet is in the way, and gives it to Shirley. Lucifer plays the piano as Lilith sings, and one of Tommy's bouncers follows Shirley to the dressing room. Jack spots him and goes after him.
Lucifer and Lilith finish what is now their duet, and when the bouncer goes into a restroom Shirley emerges from the shadows and greets Jack. Jack hugs her wife and Shirley says that there's a man who saw her put the bracelet in the safe. Jack goes in and finds the man at the safe, draws a gun on him, and tells him to put his hands in the air. He does so and reveals that he's McKinnon. McKinnon admits that he killed Tommy, took the ring, and performed the ceremony to unleash its power of immortality.
As McKinnon declares that he's immortal, Lucifer and Lilith come in. Gerdy comes in and trains a tommy gun on the trio, and says that she hired Lucky to steal the ring. She says that it was her plan to steal the ring, but Larry sold the ring to Tommy for a higher price. Then Tommy killed Larry for stealing from Lilith, Tommy's girlfriend. Then McKinnon killed Tommy using Melvin's fake ceremony, figuring it would make the ring work.
Gerdy figures she can use the ring to save Bill. She saw Lilith survive a gangland shootout and figure it's because of the ring. Lucifer grabs a pistol and shoots McKinnon in the foot, and they all realize that McKinnon isn't invulnerable or immortal. He goes down and Gerdy drops her gun, takes the ring, and realizes that it isn't ring. Lilith asks her why she should risk everything trying to save Bill, and Gerdy tells her that it's okay if she died trying because she'd rather die trying to save Bill then live forever without him. Lilith takes the ring and stares at Gerdy in understanding.
The police take McKinnon away, and Jack tells Lucifer and Lilith that they can let Tommy and McKinnon take all the blame, or get Gerdy involved. Lilith refuses to press charges, figuring she can enjoy whatever time she and Bill have left. Once Lilith leaves, Jack tells Lucifer that it's been interesting and advises him to take care of himself. Lucifer echoes the sentiments to Jack, who goes over to Shirley and finally asks to go with her and they'll talk.
Lucifer tells Lilith that his favor is repaid, and figures they'll meet again in a few hundred years. Lilith says that all of the men she's known there's an end, just like Gerdy. That's what makes human brave even when they have no reason to be, and Lilith figures she's been immortal long enough. She breathes her immortality into the ring and gives it to Lucifer, and Lucifer warns her that there's no going back. Lucifer asks her if she wants him to bring her children up to say goodbye, but Lilith refuses and insists that her children are perfect. They have no home or family, and can't be cast out of the Garden. Lilith has Lucifer to never tell her children what she did, to make sure they're unbreakable. Lucifer gives his word, and Lilith gives him a goodbye kiss before walking off.
-----
Lucifer says that the ring has Lilith's immortality in it, but he says that the only thing special about it is that it reminds him of an old friend. He says that Jack and Shirley probably didn't have a happy life in Des Moines, but Trixie figures that they fixed everything between them during the bus ride. Lucifer agrees that they might have, and Trixie takes the elevator. She thanks Lucifer before going, saying it was fun.
In the elevator, Maze is waiting and confirms Trixie got the story. She pays Trixie for her information, gathering, says that she taught her well, and leaves when the elevator reaches the ground floor.
The next day, Maze goes to an apartment and knocks at the door. A now elderly Lilith, using the name Lily Rose, answers the door. Maze says that she's her daughter, and claims that she found Lily Rose on her own. Lily Rose says that she gave something a shot and it didn't work out, and Maze asks why she abandoned her. The former Lilith says that she did it to make Maze strong, and can see that she doesn't need anyone. Maze walks away, disappointed, and Lily Rose closes the door behind her.
