When Mary visits Vernon McRoy hoping to convince him not to try to regain custody of his son, she hands him an envelope. He asks "What's this"? She replies "Fan mail from some Flounder." The envelope contains pictures of the boy's new life with his foster family in Albuquerque. Her line is taken from a short cartoon sequence sometimes used to segue to commercials on "Rocky and his Friends" (November 19, 1959 - September 3,1961 on ABC-TV. Picked up by NBC-TV in 1962 - 1964 then back to ABC-TV). Rocky and Bullwinkle were depicted on a beach, and Rocky says, "Look Bullwinkle, a message in a bottle," to which Bullwinkle asked, "Fan mail from some Flounder?" Rocky replied, "No, this what I really call a message," and held the "message" (of scribbles) toward the viewer, at which point the show would cut to a commercial.
