Jude Law turned down Superman in the early 2000s because “it just felt off,” which he knows sounds ridiculous considering he would later agree to star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and to play Dumbledore in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise. The actor confirmed he was courted to play the Man of Steel in Brett Ratner’s failed Superman project, which was announced in 2002 and based on an iteration of J.J. Abrams’ “Superman: Flyby” script.
“So this is true. Yeah. And there was a process of flirtation going on,” Law said on The Playlist’s “Discourse” podcast. “And I always resisted because it just felt like [off]. And I know you can say, ‘Well, but you played Yonn-Rogg and Dumbledore!’ It just felt like a step too far.”
“It was when Brett Ratner was going to direct, I think. And they didn’t have a script, if I remember rightly,” Law continued.

The House of the Dragon Season 2 premiere is almost upon us, and with it comes a lot of anticipation and expectation. How faithful will the show be to the source material? Will it be even better than Game of Thrones, or worse?
Reviews have now begun to come in after the show’s premiere in New York and Paris. Though the response from critics has been overwhelmingly positive, many still wait for the premiere to form opinions. Though most reviewers do not reveal much about the show, many have let things slip regarding the plotline.
Due to this, a reviewer has revealed that in the first two episodes, Rhaenyra will make an unexpected move that differs mainly from her character in the book. Read on to learn more.

With a premise about young love, two charismatic leads and a title like Winter Spring Summer or Fall, Tiffany Paulsen’s feature is likely to draw vague comparisons to Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise (and sequels). But while it’s highly unlikely to attain that canonical status, this film edges into distinctive enough territory thanks to Wednesday stars Jenna Ortega and Percy Hynes White. Their genuine chemistry and grounded performances give the feathery story a needed touch of weight.
Premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival, Winter Spring Summer or Fall aims to gift Gen Z the kind of rooting-for-them romance on offer for every generation: the unlikely match-up at the center of A Walk to Remember; the music-driven pairing of Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist; and, as mentioned, the more emotionally risky and formally adventurous Before movies.

The long-awaited third entry in the Tron franchise is finally in production. Six years after it was first announced that Jared Leto was in talks to star in a Tron project called Tron: Ares, the movie was all set to start filming last August – but then it had to wait out the writers and actors strikes. French director Bertrand Bonello is rightly back in the imaginations of U.S. cinephiles, as his new film “The Beast” is now playing stateside. The time-hopping sci-fi romantic drama starring Léa Seydoux and George MacKay as would-be lovers across centuries had the biggest opening weekend yet for distributor Sideshow/Janus Films earlier this month. Now, Bertrand Bonello’s previously undistributed 2022 film “Coma” is finally joining “The Beast” at theaters beginning in May from Film Movement. Watch the trailer for “Coma,” an IndieWire exclusive, below.

Tom Ripley is getting another chance on the awards circuit. The sinister con artist, created by author Patricia Highsmith in a series of novels, is played by Andrew Scott in the new limited series “Ripley” from Netflix. A quarter-century ago a variation of the same story was told in Anthony Minghella‘s film “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” but while that iteration received five Oscar nomination, it was snubbed for Best Picture, and star Matt Damon was left out of Best Actor. Can Scott make up for that with a nom for Best Movie/Limited Actor?
Damon’s portrayal of Tom Ripley had more warmth to it, a sense of longing (“I always thought it would be better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody”). He was a tragic monster who trapped himself in a web of lies and murder. Scott’s performance suggests someone more methodical and calculating.

Goggins and Tarantino already collaborated before the 2015 movie The Hateful Eight. The pair worked together on Django Unchained, where the pair became familiar with each other on set. But beyond Django, Tarantino was also a fan of Goggins’ work on Justified. Given how much he enjoyed the actor’s performance, there was little wonder as to why Tarantino would recruit Goggins again for The Hateful Eight.
But Hateful Eight would have Goggins act alongside even more star-power than Django Unchained did. And Goggins admitted that could be overwhelming at times.

Look, let’s be honest. From the opening seconds of its debut trailer, we all knew that Alex Garland’s “Civil War” would not be a pill that went down easily. Garland may have built his career around challenging visions of the future, but a film about a second American Civil War—in an election year, no less—is the kind of thing that gives even professional discourse writers a headache.

As the latest feature from writers/directors Fernanda Valadez and Astrid Rondero (“Identifying Features”) draws to a close, it’s hard to ignore the starkness, pacing, and tone overall; this is hardly the sort of film one puts on as any sort of a palate cleanser. Despite the increased awareness of gender identities, there is one classification that has been around for over 100 years or 30 years (it’s debatable) that rarely enjoys the spotlight, intersex. An intersex person can be a broad definition for someone who is born without a number of different sexual characteristics. The U.N. has defined it as someone who does “not fit typical binary notions of male or female bodies.” And yet, despite the minimal increase in trans or nonbinary characters on film and television, you rarely hear anyone who refers to themselves as intersexed.

Media representation of disabled people is challenging to get right — too saccharine, and you’re veering towards inspiration porn, too maudlin, and you’re implying that a disabled life might not be a life worth living. “Ibelin,” the newest documentary from “The Painter and the Thief” filmmaker Benjamin Ree, strikes a poignant balance, acknowledging the ways that physical disability can limit a life while showing how one complex man expanded his world nonetheless.

“Reinas,” the latest from director Klaudia Reynicke, is a quiet but vivid tale of summer days in Lima, Peru. The script, which Reynicke co-wrote with Diego Vega, depicts a family drama against a backdrop of political chaos.
Set in 1992, just after the country’s president sent military officials to shut down Congress, heralding an era of unrest, the film focuses on a small but fractured family’s attempts to understand each other.

The first of many misdirects of perspective occurs in the opening shot of “In a Violent Nature.” The film opens with off-screen voices in discussion as the camera fixes its glance on what appears like a slipshod frame of a tree branch in the forest. It’s an image that feels haphazardly put together, and combined with the disembodied dialogue, filmmaker Chris Nash primes the audience to perceive the scene as something akin to a DIY YouTube video.

It’s safe to assume that, were one to simply look at the film’s runtime or consider the basic concept surrounding the documentary “Daughters,“ there’s presumably much more to this than a simple film about a Father-Daughter dance organized for one particular group of incarcerated men and their children, separated by prison walls and an ocean of distance both physically as much as emotionally. Such dance events are commonplace; normally held annually as a way for fathers to bond with their young girls within a setting not unlike a homecoming dance or prom, most could be seen as little more than an excuse for a large group of children to burn off energy as they dash around a gymnasium to any number of DJ-provided pop hits, but there are equal parts undeniable connections made throughout the course of the evening as well as a memory both will, in all likelihood,...

Just when I was finally coming to accept that The Knick was never going to come back, André Holland had to get my hopes up all over again. While speaking with The Wrap, Holland said that The Knick season 3 is still alive.
Following the cancelation of The Knick after two amazing seasons, word emerged that Moonlight director Barry Jenkins was developing a third season with André Holland, but since then… nothing. When The Wrap asked Holland what the premise of that third season would have been, the actor didn’t want to say anything as it could still happen. “I would tell you but there is still a possibility [it could happen],” Holland said. “We are working very hard to make it happen. Keep writing about it, keep talking about it and maybe we can convince the powers that be to write the check.” He said that Jenkins is still involved and that...

The first line of “Winner” says it all: “My name is Reality Winner.” This uninspired introduction to the character, an Nsa employee who leaked classified documents surrounding Russian election interference to the media, sets the tone for what’s to follow. Susanna Fogel’s film is not actively bad, just aggressively bland.

‘A Real Pain’ Review: Kieran Culkin Is Superb In Jesse Eisenberg’s Funny & Moving Dramedy [Sundance]
Park City – There are multiple meanings to the title of Jesse Eisenberg’s latest directorial effort, “A Real Pain.” There is the pain that cousins Benji Kaplan (Eisenberg) and David Kaplan (Kieran Culkin) are experiencing over the passing of their beloved grandmother, and there is the pain Benji is feeling over a horrifying incident in his cousin’s life. The most pressing example, however, is in David’s soul.

Within minutes following the opening fade-in of “Gaucho Gaucho,” a trio of individuals can be seen dashing across a barren landscape, each sitting astride their own majestic-looking horse bathed in a sea of black and white with a South American backdrop beautifully framing the moment. It’s an appropriate setup to this documentary about gauchos, the colloquialism used to describe Argentinian cowboys and cowgirls, as the 84-minute runtime serves as little more than an exercise in striking photography mixed with a series of vignettes that’s as slice of life as one’s likely to find.

It all seems so idyllic at first and sensible, too. Mother of four Maria Gros Vatne narrates the opening minutes of “A New Kind of Wilderness” as the documentary shows videos and still photographs of her husband and kids romping through Norway’s unassuming fields, streams, and woods. “We want to be independent, free, and full of love,” she says on top of pictures of her children tending gardens and livestock, which stand in stark contrast to the subsequent images showing Maria dealing with her cancer.

Overall, “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “The Zone of Interest” each scored nine nominations, but the former saw both Scorsese and Lily Gladstone snubbed in Best Director and Lead Actress.

They were joined by Edward Lachman who was honored for his work on Pablo Larrain‘s “El Conde.”

With Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire having hit Netflix over the Christmas Holidays and its a follow-up, The Scargiver, set to debut Easter Weekend, talk has turned to when Zack Snyder is finally going to release his “Snyder cut” of the first film. According to a recent appearance on the DGA Director’s Cut podcast (excerpted by The Playlist), Snyder says he’s waiting until the second film comes out, and that fans can expect it in the summer of 2024.
He notes that the director’s cut should clock in at an hour longer than the current version of the film, stating that Netflix specifically put aside extra money so that he could shoot additional sequences. He says the idea was always that there would be a second version of the film. He maintains that this never happened on his previous director’s cuts. “All my other director’s...

I was only a few moments into my conversation with Andrew Scott when a look of puzzlement came on his face. And that’s when I realized, “Oh, no I’d spoiled the ‘Drag Race UK’ season, er, series 5 winner for him.” Granted, it had been almost two weeks since the finale and as a publically avid “Drag Race” fan, I just assumed he would have watched it. Especially considering his “All of Us Strangers” director, Andrew Haigh, was catching up every week.

The Golden Globes are back! Was it worth it? I mean, if Rosamund Pike is gonna serve on the red carpet like this, why not? The host, popular stand-up comedian Jo Koy who, to be frank, most of the nominees in the Beverly Hilton had never heard of, bombed spectacularly but as he noted, he’d only been hired 10 days before. Not ideal. The big news of the night was what amounted to public relations wins for “Oppenheimer” which won Motion Picture – Drama and “Poor Things” which took the Musical or Comedy honor.

Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke has been relatively quiet of late and hasn’t made a film since 2017’s “Happy End,” but his exacting reputation has been coming under fire in recent weeks. 2024 will be an interesting year for superhero films and the comic book genre—especially after a dire 2023. This year was arguably the worst year for superheroes ever—four DC movies bombed in a row, Marvel’s “Secret Invasion” show received the lowest reviews in the company’s Disney+ series history, and they had one bonafide box office flop in “The Marvels.” So, what’s the plan for 2024?

It’s been said a million times already, but it remains true—some of the most interesting stories are being told on TV rather than in films. With the film industry becoming more and more reliant either on franchises and blockbusters or low-budget horror, there’s not a lot of space for the mid-budget adult drama. And those projects have now, for the most part, migrated over to TV where streaming services and premium networks snatch up limited series filled with all-star casts.

In case you were wondering, there was no beef between Paul Giamatti and Alexander Payne. The actor and filmmaker collaborated on 2004’s “Sideways,” an art-house breakout that earned over $100 million worldwide and five Oscar nominations including Best Picture (Payne and Jim Taylor won for Adapted Screenplay). But it’s almost been 20 years since that first collaboration. Now, finally, the pair are back together with the word-of-mouth wonder, “The Holdovers.”
