This play about German military honor - which led to a complaint to the BBC from the German embassy - introduced American director Robert Aldrich to the work of Lukas Heller, a German-born writer who had arrived in Britain as a refugee in the 1930s. Aldrich wanted to make a film of the play, but never succeeded in doing so; however, he later employed Heller as screenwriter on several of his most famous movies.
