Langston Kerman convinced his mother-in-law to put him in charge of her dating apps — bad news for her prospective suitors but good news for comedy. Kerman leads off his new Netflix special, Bad Poetry, by not only explaining how he’s seducing men on an elderly woman’s behalf but by playing their lovelorn audio messages as well.
An invasion of privacy? Elder abuse? Sure, that’s why it’s fun. And it’s what makes Kerman so interesting as a stand-up — he’s believable as the guy to whom you’d entrust your romantic future. Yet he’s enough of an impish a-hole that you’re not surprised when he publicly embarrasses the dopes with their clumsy messages of love.
In that way, he’s not unlike John Mulaney, a comic who intuitively seems like a good dude even while he insists he’s a borderline criminal. Mulaney is...

On his 66th birthday, Thurston Moore has shared a new single titled “New in Town” from his upcoming album, Flow Critical Lucidity. Stream it below.
Penned by Radieux Radio, the experimental “New in Town” was influenced by 1980s punk and hardcore bands like Minor Threat, Fugazi, Bad Brains, and Red C. Built around off-kilter percussion and Moore’s detached delivery, the track’s theme is “fresh blood,” as the artist explained in a statement.
Moore added, “The song is about… the new kid in school. The new kid on the scene. A new potential for change in an already active community hoping to protect the world from the poisons of power-hungry creeps. The spirit of youth demonstrated in the early ’80s slam pits of hardcore refusing the worn-out expectations of adulthood.”
Flow Critical Lucidity also features the previous singles “Sans Limites,” “Hypnogram,” and “Rewilding.” It’s out on September 20th,...

Harry Connick, Jr. is heading to the Mediterranean Sea. In the new romantic comedy Find Me Falling, the singer and actor plays a role that may initially seem like familiar territory for the singer and actor: a rock star. But that’s where the similarities between Connick and his character, John Allman, end. “He’s playing against type as a brooding, tattooed, lonely rock star,” writer/director Stelana Kliris tells Tudum. “We couldn’t have asked for a better fit, and on top of that, he wrote two fantastic songs for the film.”
“I just absolutely loved it,” Connick tells Tudum about his initial reaction to the script. “I thought it was heartfelt and romantic and smart and tragic and all of those things, and it just looked like an experience I wanted to be a part of.”

Jimmy Kimmel hosted the 96th Academy Awards (Oscars), where some of the most successful films of the previous year were honored. He was quick to break into his bag of prepared one-liners, even though he acknowledged the show was running five minutes behind schedule. He proceeded to roast several of the night’s most prominent guests, such as Christopher Nolan, Bradley Cooper, and Robert Downey Jr.
After the drama and controversy of Kimmel’s time hosting this year’s Oscars, fans are seeking a new face to take on the prestigious role next year. And it appears that the ideal candidate is none other than the hilarious and beloved John Mulaney. Why? His Oscar presentation for Best Sound was arguably the most unexpected moment; his performance was well-received by fans.

Prime Video’s big February drop is Mr. & Mrs. Smith! No, not the 2005 Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie action movie, but a new TV series kinda based on it starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. The set up for the show version? Glover and Erskine are two strangers who both get jobs at a shady spy agency and are asked to get married so that they can pretend to be a couple undercover, but things get more complicated when they start falling in love for real. Uh oh!
If you’re in the mood for a movie or two this month, you can also check out the Prime debuts of Strays, Bottoms, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. In the meantime, here’s everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and Freevee this month. Amazon Originals are accompanied by an asterisk!

John Mulaney’s long-awaited new standup special will premiere on Netflix April 25. Titled “John Mulaney: Baby J,” it marks Mulaney’s first standup special since 2018’s “Kid Gorgeous,” which also premiered on Netflix.
“Baby J” was directed by Alex Timbers and features music from David Byrne. The special was recorded at Boston’s Symphony Hall in February 2023, after returning to standup in 2021 and touring with a set called “From Scratch.”
That tour found Mulaney tackling his own issues of addiction and relapse and recounting an intervention staged by friends, including Seth Meyers, that led him to enter rehab. Mulaney discussed the incident on a candid and emotional episode of “Late Night With Seth Meyers” in September 2021.
“Baby J” is the latest in a line of specials from Mulaney that also includes 2012’s “New in Town” and 2015’s “The Comeback Kid.” Mulaney also created and starred in the Netflix kids special...

John Mulaney’s newest standup special, titled “John Mulaney: Baby J,” will premiere April 25 on Netflix.
It marks Mulaney’s third Netflix standup special following 2015’s “The Comeback Kid” and 2018’s “Kid Gorgeous.” One of his earlier comedy hours, 2012’s “New in Town,” is also available on Netflix. He also worked with the streamer on the Emmy-nominated children’s variety special “John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch” in 2019.
Alex Timbers directed “Baby J,” which features music from David Byrne of Talking Heads. It was filmed in Boston’s Symphony Hall in February 2023.
Mulaney began touring with the show titled “John Mulaney: From Scratch” in the middle of 2021 after his widely publicized rehab stay. Much of the material for that special focused on his drug relapse and subsequent intervention, which was held by Seth Meyers, Nick Kroll and other fellow comedians and “Saturday Night Live” alumni. It’s last call for a number of great movies leaving HBO and HBO Max in March. Fortunately, the month is also packed with new movies and shows, but if you were planning to revisit any of the films below, now’s your chance.

Expiring titles of note include Sam Raimi’s definitive horror films “The Evil Dead” and “Evil Dead 2,” Wes Anderson’s charming coming-of-age romance “Moonrise Kingdom,” the Charlize Theron-led dramedy “Tully,” Judd Apatow’s “The King of Staten Island” starring Pete Davidson, and the musical drama “Dreamgirls,” starring Jennifer Hudson in the role that earned her the Oscar.

Back when WarnerMedia (which technically no longer exists in the same form) announced that it would be premiering its entire slate of 2021 films on HBO Max, this is the kind of month they likely had in mind. For HBO Max’s list of new releases in August 2021 is highlighted by an honest-to-goodness blockbuster.
The Suicide Squad is set to premiere Aug. 5 on HBO Max. This film featuring some of DC Comics’ most curious villains borrows its name, format, and many of its characters from the David Ayers-directed 2016 film Suicide Squad. This time around, the rogues gallery is directing by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and his colorful disposition. In addition to The Suicide Squad, August sees the arrival of the Hugh Jackman-starring Reminiscence on Aug. 20.

And just like that – here comes spring. Amazon Prime‘s list of new releases for April 2021 isn’t as cheery as one would expect from the sunny season. But perhaps that’s by design – you should be outside anyway!
Amazon’s most prominent original series for April 2021 is undoubtedly Them from multi-hyphenate Lena Waithe. This horror anthology’s first season, subtitled “Covenant”, will center on a Black family in the 1950s who move from North Carolina to a white neighborhood in Los Angeles. It premieres on April 9. Given its name and premise, Them is drawing some (largely joke-y) comparisons to Jordan Peele’s Us on social media. But hey, the world could always use some more Us.

While the first day of spring technically belongs to March, everyone knows that it kicks into high gear in April. To celebrate the changing of the seasons, Hulu is finally bringing back its signature original series for April 2021.
Season 4 of the multiple Emmy award-winning The Handmaid’s Tale premieres on April 28. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen June and her dystopian world. In fact, it’s been so long that our own world decided to endure its own dystopian pandemic in the meantime. Hopefully this series’ return will mean we can keep our political and social collapses on television where they belong.
Aside from The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu isn’t brining much else to the table in terms of originals this month. Thankfully, the one other original that Hulu has in store for April sounds completely righteous. Sasquatch, the latest docuseries from the Duplass brothers producing team, will cover exactly what the title promises.

A new year means a new start. But in its list of new year releases for January 2021, Hulu is sending a message of…eh, we’ll get the year started in February. Not to be overly rude to the usually sturdy streaming service, but there’s not much going on for Hulu in 2021’s first month.
Perhaps the biggest release of note is something that already enjoyed a successful release for ITV in the U.K. The Sister is the lates thriller from Neil Cross (Luther) and it makes its U.S. debut on Hulu on Jan. 22. 2020 comedies Save Yourselves and Like a Boss both arrive on Jan. 1. Hulu original film The Ultimate Playlist of Noise premieres on Jan. 15 and TV series Everyone is Doing Great arrives on Jan. 13.

Hulu is kicking off the new year in style next month, with January set to deliver a ton of fresh titles to the Disney-owned streaming service. There’s a bunch of original content landing throughout the first few weeks of 2021, but probably the highlight is the incredible number of classic movies that are going up on the site on New Year’s Day. Whether you’re in the mood for iconic comedies, dramas, animated efforts or sci-fi flicks, there’s something for you on the way.
There are well over 100 films being added to Hulu’s library on January 1st, so let’s just pick out a few notable titles. The full Austin Powers trilogy is among them, and if you can’t get enough of Mike Myers, the first Shrek likewise becomes available. For dramas, there’s Robert Downey Jr. biopic Chaplin, Johnny Depp vehicle Donnie Brasco and Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show.

Prolific standup comedian John Mulaney last filmed a special for Comedy Central in 2012. Now he’s coming back…and he’s bringing some friends.
Comedy Central announced today that it has reached a deal with Mulaney to produce two more John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch specials for the network, rather than the project’s native Netflix. Mulaney will return as the star and executive producer of both specials. One special will be holiday themed and will reunite the cast of the original.

Comedy Central Tuesday announced a deal with two-time Emmy winning comedian John Mulaney to headline and executive produce two original Sack Lunch Bunch specials, including an upcoming holiday-themed installment that will reunite the cast from the original show. It marks Mulaney’s return to Comedy Central, where he last did a special in 2012.
John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch, a parody of kid’s shows written by Mulaney and Markia Sawyer, with music by Eli Bolin and directed by Rhys Thomas, premiered late last year on Netflix to strong reviews.
“We couldn’t be more excited about John’s return to Comedy Central and hope this is just the beginning of a long-standing partnership,” said Chris McCarthy, President of ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Brands.

Grammy and Emmy Award winner Harry Connick Jr will be honored with at star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame next week. The ceremony will take place on the morning of Oct. 24.
“When choosing a star location, we try to incorporate ties to the honoree and this one turned out to be a coincidence as we had heard that one of Harry’s favorite songwriters is Cole Porter, who is Harry’s neighbor star,” revealed Ana Martinez, Producer of the Walk of Fame.
Connick’s latest album entitled “True Love: A Celebration of Cole Porter” will be released on Oct. 25, which will be followed by a Broadway show in December named “Harry Connick, Jr: A Celebration of Cole Porter.”

It wasn’t entirely surprising that Pete Davidson was on last night’s episode of “Saturday Night Live,” even after posting disturbing messages suggesting he was suicidal last month, but it was surprising to see him flanked by former “SNL” writer John Mulaney. The two appeared as a duo on “Weekend Update,” where Davidson is a regular, to discuss everything from their shared appreciation of Clint Eastwood’s “The Mule” to the fact that Davidson is doing much better now. According to Vanity Fair, Mulaney joining the segment was no coincidence — he’s struggled with his own substance-abuse issues in the past.
“I didn’t realize you guys hung out together,” Colin Jost said after Mulaney showed up. “Yeah, we do, but a lot of times it looks like I’m Pete’s lawyer,” the comedian replied. “But for real, I’ve been spending time with Pete to try to...

Some standups have God-given charisma that’ll cut a hole through the bottom of the stage. They’ll make you laugh out of sheer force of will, whether by volume or inflection or antics or some mystical combination of all three. They’re the kind of performers that, if you saw their set, written out on paper, it would look more like an observational casual brunch conversation than something people would willingly spend money to go see.
But there are some comics who take the reverse route: They’ve got enough punchlines to fill out a late night packet or a Twitter feed and spend time bulking up the means of delivery. If you watch John Mulaney’s 2009 episode of “Comedy Central Presents,” it’s got most of the material that would eventually find its way onto his first album, “The Top Part.” The Salt and Pepper Diner story has...

After months of touring, John Mulaney is bringing his latest hour of stand-up to one final stop — Netflix.
“Kid Gorgeous at Radio City,” which hits the streaming service May 1, follows one of Mulaney’s seven sold-out shows at the iconic venue and is part of a multi-special deal with Netflix he signed earlier this year. He says the rest of the specials “will be coming out spaced out enough that you won’t get sick of me, but close enough that if you’re a fan [you won’t] worry [that] I’m working on new stuff. I won’t bother anyone too much, but I’ll be around if you need me.”
Mulaney built a career as a writer on “Saturday Night Live,” creating Bill Hader’s famed Stefon character, and has gone on to become one of comedy’s most in-demand stand-ups. After starring in short-lived Fox sitcom “Mulaney,” he went on to create “Oh,...

No one would accuse New Yorkers of being starved for options when it comes to going to the movies. From cultural institutions like Film Society of Lincoln Center, BAMcinématek, Museum of the Moving Image, and Film Forum, to indie theatres IFC Center and Nitehawk, to bar/theatre hybrids Videology and Syndicated, to the many, many multiplexes, you’ll never hurt for options when it comes to finding a great film to see on the big screen on any given weekend. Exciting newcomers like Metrograph proved it is still possible to make an impact with even the most jaded NYC cinephiles, while the fate of upscale theatres like iPic is yet to be seen.
But despite this bounty of riches, things are about to get even more exciting because after five years and a few false starts, the Alamo Drafthouse is finally opening in Downtown Brooklyn. (The official opening date is Friday,...

A little more than a year ago, comedian John Mulaney was in a very different place. He was still the new comedy boom's Comic Most Likely to Succeed, a title reinforced by his acclaimed 2012 Comedy Central stand-up special New in Town — which was enjoying a phenomenal second life after its release on Netflix — and his unusually publicized stint as a writer at Saturday Night Live (it helps when you co-create Stefon). He was being compared to Jerry Seinfeld, favorably; and it was fitting, then, that his career was about to culminate with the impending early October release of the eponymous multi-camera Fox sitcom he created. Then reviews started coming out for Mulaney, and the comic was once again being compared to Jerry Seinfeld — but this time unfavorably. When the ratings ended up equally underwhelming, Fox reduced the episode order. Though the show wasn't officially canceled until the spring, the writing...

Somewhat under the radar, filmmaker Noah Baumbach and actress/writer Greta Gerwig have developed a really strong working relationship with each other. I think that the two of them have hit on something quite nice ever since Gerwig co-starred in Baumbach’s film Greenberg. They’ve since collaborated on Frances Ha, co-writing the script together, as well as doing the same for this weekend’s Mistress America, which obviously sees Baumbach also direct along with Gerwig also acting. I was really taken by this one, which is not only one of the funniest movies of the year so far, but also one that firmly establishes the dynamic between Baaumbach and Gerwig. Much like with Frances Ha, Mistress America is a loose comedy about a free spirit in New York City. However, our true protagonist this time is a lower key college freshman named Tracy (Lola Kirke). New in town, she struggles to connect with anymore,...

New in town? Wanna swing a little bit? That’s the premise of Patrick Brice’s hilarious new sex comedy “The Overnight” which centers on sexually frustrated couple (“Orange Is The New Black” star Taylor Schilling and Adam Scott), new to Los Angeles and a little spiritually adrift, who make friends with an eccentric, bohemian Angelino (Jason Schwartzman) and his exotic French wife (Judith Godrèche). When their children make a playdate and the couples stay over for dinner, a loose, fun night becomes increasingly more bizarre as the evening progresses. “The Overnight” opens on Friday, and in anticipation of the funny sex comedy—which you should totally see—the studio has released the first seven minutes of the film online. Here’s the official synopsis: Alex, Emily, and their son, Rj, have recently moved to Los Angeles’ Eastside from Seattle. Feeling lost in a new city, they are desperate to find their first new friends.

Former Saturday Night Live writer John Mulaney's maiden voyage into the sitcom world took quite a beating even before Sunday night's premiere. The idea was sound: Mulaney's stand-up demeanor reminds more than a few observers of Jerry Seinfeld (who had a big TV show once upon a time), and Mulaney himself has often referenced how influenced and inspired he was by The Cosby Show. The comic was also one of the brains behind Bill Hader's character Stefon, one of the best recurring characters in SNL's history. Why wouldn't NBC assume that Mulaney would be a slam dunk?...

When will our beloved Kidman return to us? For someone who works so consistently, doesn't it seem like it's hard to find Nicole Kidman in a movie theater? Grace of Monaco keeps threatening to arrive but never does leaving us to wonder if it will ever play in regular movie theaters after its shaming at Cannes (that place can be brutal). Any big dreams for the quality of Paddington (it comes from charming source material at least) her Christmas film, have been dashed by that hateful slapstick trailer and Colin Firth's exit as the voice. The wait is soon over though. For those of you who missed The Railway Man in theaters, it's just out on DVD and Blu-Ray. [Warning: Nicole's part is small enough that when the climax arrives, she's literally a blurry figure in the background.]

Renee Zellweger thinks she can handle "The Whole Truth."
The Oscar winner is in talks to star opposite Daniel Craig in the courtroom thriller "The Whole Truth," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
This would be Zellweger's first movie in four years. Perhaps "The Whole Truth," an indie directed by Courtney Hunt ("Frozen River"), can help revive her once-acclaimed career. In the early 2000s, the actress enjoyed many critical and commercial successes, from "Jerry Maguire" to "Chicago" to the "Bridget Jones Diary" movies. And she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for "Cold Mountain" in 2004.
But then Zellweger appeared in a string of unmemorable duds, like "New in Town" and "Leatherheads." Her last film, 2010's "My Own Love Song," was a flop that went straight to DVD.
Choosing the indie route could be a smart strategy for the 44-year-old. Hey, look what it did for her former "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" co-star,...

An entertaining Hollywood novel by the son of a movie agent is packed with brilliant and wacky details
Beau Rosenwald does not immediately leap out as the kind of guy a reader would want to spend 400-odd pages with. We meet him in 1962, when he is in his mid-20s, in the Los Angeles offices of a talent agency. He is short, heavy, and sweat stains are forming crescents around his armpits as he waits for a meeting. "He had a tuberous face," the narrator of American Dream Machine, Beau's bastard son Nate, tells us, "lips damp and pursed like a trumpeter's, one eye slightly lower than the other like a disappointed hound's."
New in town from the east coast, Beau's one concession to quality is his brogues, made by Church's. The words of his mentor back in New York have clearly made an impact: "A man is judged by his persistence,...
