Across the 26 tracks that comprise Pink Tape, Lil Uzi Vert raps, sings, squeals, screams, and even screeches their way through a little of every genre influence that’s helped define the Philadelphia rapper’s polychrome sound since 2017’s Luv Is Rage 2. The nearly 90-minute album spans heavy metal, energetic pop-punk (“Amped”), hyperpop (“X2”), candy-coated trap (“Days Come and Go” and “Died and Came Back”), and industrial witchcore (“Fire Alarm”).
There’s something of a skeletal framework by which Uzi has sequenced this sprawling opus, one where by the time we get to the hard Jersey Club banger “Just Wanna Rock,” it feels like a natural progression of the album’s wide-ranging vision rather than a leftfield grab for attention. There’s an almost gleefully breathless irreverence to the way Uzi picks up and immediately drops ideas, dipping in and out of different melodic pockets or styles at a moment’s notice.

Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar; Cast Parineeti Chopra, Arjun Kapoor, Jaideep Ahlawat, Raghubir Yadav, Neena Gupta; Direction: Dibakar Banerjee; Rating: * * (two stars)
By Vinayak Chakravorty
Dark and quirky, sombre and amusing. Dibakar Banerjee's cinema is often typified by ironies. With "Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar", the filmmaker tries using the trademark idiom to narrate a story of the societal divide that erupts when a boorish heartland cop crosses path with an educated, refined bigtown girl who is a corporate bigshot.
The idea is to set up a battle of the sexes using the language of black comedy, even as the film attempts to draw focus on patriarchy, and towards two radically different Indias that have forever struggled to coexist.
Barring his debut directorial "Khosla Ka Ghosla", Banerjee's sense of cinematic humour has never been mainstream. With Parineeti Chopra and Arjun Kapoor toplining the cast of his latest, Banerjee has not surprisingly tried...

"I'm a prototype - my existence is classified." Netflix has revealed a full-length official trailer for Outside the Wire, a sci-fi action thriller film from Swedish filmmaker Mikael Håfström set in the near future. Damson Idris stars as a disgraced drone pilot who is sent into a deadly militarized zone where he finds himself working for an undercover android officer, played by Anthony Mackie, and is tasked to locate a doomsday device before the insurgents do. This has the look of Edge of Tomorrow, but without the time loop. There are, however, some slick robots and various sci-fi aspects that give it a different vibe. Also starring Enzo Cilenti, Emily Beecham, Michael Kelly, and Pilou Asbæk. This looks even better than the first trailer, I'm honestly quite excited to watch this! And hopefully it's good and not just another bad January movie being dumped. Here's the second ...

Filmmakers Karan Johar (Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham), Dibakar Banerjee, Zoya Akhtar, and Anurag Kashyap have previous collaborated on two other anthology features, the cinema themed Bombay Talkies in 2013, and the steamy Lust Stories in 2018. This latest endeavor sees all four of its filmmakers venturing into horror for the first time ever. While Kashyap is well known as India's foremost genre film icon, his films have never quite eked over the thin line between thriller and horror. Karan Johar is best know...

After Ye Lou was the subject of controversy regarding his previous film, “Shadow Play”, he is back with another effort that recently premiered at the official competition of the 76th edition of Venice International Film Festival. It seems that he is back in mercy with his country’s cultural establishment and why shouldn’t he, since “Saturday Fiction” is a handsome spy noir set in the “Solitary Island” period of Shanghai’s history and is not even a bit controversial.

“Solitary Island” refers to the early period of Japanese occupation of the city between 1937 and 1941. The city was occupied by the Japanese army, but the British and French concessions (business and cultural institutions) maintained the widest form of autonomy. Needless to say, it made Shanghai into a major spy hub at the beginning of the World War Two.

More Hollywood actors are expected to appear in starring roles in Chinese films as China’s film industry continue to expand, with bigger productions looking to meet international standards and feed the growing appetite for domestic blockbusters.
So far, however, the top Hollywood stars joining the ensemble casts of these blockbusters have almost all been men. Opportunities for Hollywood actresses in China still remain largely unavailable because of the lack of suitable roles and limited genres. Agencies have been pushing for female starring roles, however, and Milla Jovovich has a role in upcoming action-thriller “The Rookies.”
According to Jonah Greenberg, who left his role as head of CAA China in February to launch a Beijing-based development and production company called Salty Pictures, the agency helped Jovovich get the role, originally written as a male. Such a successful gender-switch of a role in a Chinese film to accommodate a Western actress is a first.

Though Louis C.K.'s transgressions were widely considered the worst kept secret in the comedy world, to some, it really was a secret.
Stephen Colbert welcomed Samantha Bee to the stage at Njpac in Newark, New Jersey, on Dec. 6, where she was the special guest on Sad! A Happy Evening with Stephen Colbert & Samantha Bee, a fundraiser for the Montclair Film Festival.
During their hour-and-a-half-long chat, the longtime friends talked everything from dealing with politics (specifically President Donald Trump's tumultuous first-year in office) during their late night monologues -- Colbert hosts The Late Show on CBS while Bee is the face of Full Frontal on TBS -- as well as the seismic shift in culture surrounding sexual harassment since the Harvey Weinstein allegations came to light.

Among the many filmmakers who have made the jump to television in recent years, one of the most intriguing names to join the fray is Wong Kar Wai. The Hong Kong auteur’s lyrical, romantic dramas about poetic loners — including such beloved titles as “Chungking Express” and “In the Mood for Love” — treasure texture over dense plot. So it was something of a surprise when Amazon unveiled five new series in the works in early September, including one from Wong called “Tong Wars,” described as combining the history of Chinese immigration to the U.S. with a crime potboiler and scripted by Paul Attanasio (“Quiz Show,” “Donnie Brasco”).
Details on the series were scant at the time, but in a conversation with journalists at the Lumiere Festival in Lyon, Wong explained the epic sweep of the show. “The thing that attracted me to this project was the first opportunity to...

It’s arguably a rare sight when female characters lead a major genre film, and last year’s online Ghostbusters drama proves it’s still, depressingly, a controversial choice if they do. Too often, female characters are reduced to sidekicks, damsels, sex objects and caricatures. It sometimes feels like every day there’s a new statistic about women being under-represented in Hollywood and while, to some extent, things are looking brighter and more diverse by the day, it’s an uphill struggle. Still, as we wait for Hollywood to get its act together, I thought I’d celebrate a genre where awesome, strong, multi-faceted female characters have led casts as a regular occurrence for decades - martial arts!

The alarm clock cries in my bedside table. 8am. Right, here we go. Grab clothes for yet another day, don’t forget the body soap, the moisturizer and the black mascara and off I go to start my daily ritual lively practiced inside my tiny toilet. Repetitive motions are evoked…teeth are washed, hair is brushed, boot laces are entwined around my unreliable feet, eggs are scrambled in the tormented pan, coffee is brewed, lights are shut, doors are locked, and a cigarette is delightedly lit—all as if I was skimming through the prologue of a novel I have lazily read too many times before. My feet move to the rhythm of the rain incessantly falling on the grey pavement and my bones fear the unpredictability of what may come in the following hours, but I never stop. I never do. (…) The ritual has somehow turned into tradition and...

As The Weinstein Co. prepares to release its long-lost thriller Shanghai on Friday, Harvey Weinstein is blaming the Chinese government for decisions that led to a seven-year delay in bringing the movie to the big screen in North America. Speaking about the project’s long odyssey for the first time, the outspoken mogul is pointing the finger squarely at the Chinese government, which he says revoked the film’s permits to shoot in Shanghai on the eve of production back in 2008, propelling the movie onto a troubled trajectory and forcing TWC to take on third-party investors who held

You're going to hear references to Gravity a lot this weekend. One critic says Robert Zemeckis' The Walk "does what Gravity did for outer space" while Ridley Scott's The Martian is not only an outer space-set drama, but could possibly challenge Gravity's October opening weekend record, which was set this same weekend two years ago. However, those Gravity references may be short-lived if neither film is able to live up to the success the seven-time Oscar winner found two years ago. We'll begin with The Martian, a film based on Andy Weir's highly successful, self-published sci-fi novel, starring Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded on Mars. I caught the film at the Toronto Film Festival and could immediately tell it was going to be a moneymaker. It's a crowd-pleaser of the highest sort, but that $55.7 million October opening record set by Gravity looms large. In The Martian...

Why is a movie made seven years ago finally getting to U.S. theaters now? That's a long road for a film that cost a bundle ($50 million) and boasts a lineup of Oscar nominees including Swedish helmer Hafstrom (Evil), writer Hossein Amini (The Wings of the Dove), producer Mike Medavoy (Black Swan)

In a rather extreme example of belated distribution, Mikael Håfström's Shanghai finally arrives on North American shores. Finished and shown at festivals in 2010 already, people may wonder about the youthful appearances of its killer cast, which includes people like Chow Yun-fat, John Cusack, David Morse, Ken Watanabe, Franka Potente, Rinko Kikuchi, and Gong Li. Wowzers! That gives us quite a choice of people to base a quiz on, but with Gong Li in the list, the choosing process wasn't a long one. As Zhang Yimou's films made Chinese cinema world famous in the early nineties, Gong Li was the incredibly accomplished and glamorous star which rose out of that movement. Over the past two-and-a-half decades, she has been a great actress on occasion, a...

There's an expression a dog wears when it's done something wrong that you haven't found out about yet, as it slinks over to cower in its basket, hoping you won't notice. For some reason, that's kind of what it feels like when films like this week's John Cusack-starrer "Shanghai," or last month's Jean-Pierre Jeunet-directed "The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet" limp into theaters after a long time out of sight, presumably spent chewing on your dress shoes upstairs. Both those titles were Mia for a long time after they'd been finished and even released in other territories; both come pre-infused with an almost palpable aura of defeat; and neither has received much in the way of a marketing push. And there's one other thing both films share—they are being put out (in the sense of both "distributed" and "doused as one would a fire") by The Weinstein Company.

In a world filled with secrets, solving a mystery can be murder. The Weinstein Co has debuted the official Us trailer for a film called Shanghai, which you may remember hearing about because we ran the first trailer for this in 2010. The film has been delayed for release here in the Us for 5 years, and TWC is just now putting it out quietly this month. John Cusack stars in Mikael Håfström's Shanghai (the film Håfström made before going on to do The Rite and Escape Plan) as an expat who goes to Shanghai when it's occupied during WWII and falls for a woman and uncovers gangland secrets. Also starring Chow Yun-Fat, David Morse, Ken Watanabe, Franka Potente & Jeffrey Dean Morgan. It doesn't look so good. Have fun. Way back in 2012, Harvey Weinstein promised that the star-studded "Shanghai," which by that point had already opened in several overseas territories, but had been sitting on the U.S. shelf for years, would finally be released via Radius. That didn't happen. Fast-forward a few years and now the movie is being dumped in a couple of weeks in limited release, and a trailer has been put together. Mikael Håfström ("1408," "Escape Plan") directs the international ensemble of John Cusack, Chow Yun-fat, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Franka Potente, Gong Li, David Morse and Ken Watanabe, in the 1940s-set story that follows an American Naval Intelligence agent named Paul Soames who travels to Shanghai, posing as a pro-Nazi journalist, in order to investigate the death of his good friend Connor, only for things to be complicated by a love triangle. So, is this a long lost treasure? Probably not, but as a rainy Sunday.

This time out, it’s obviously the August releases that I’m going to be prepping you for, and once again as an added bonus, I’ve seen a couple of them already. Despite the reputation that the month gets for being a summer dumping ground, there are reasons to be optimistic here. In fact, August is potentially shaping up to be a very solid month overall for cinema, so you’ll likely have multiple things to see starting later on this week. Take a look below and obviously stay tuned for more on many of these… Here now are the ten best bets for movies in August: 10. After many years of a varied theater, dance and film career, Roxanne Messina Captor will be directing her script “Pearl” starring Juliette Binoche along with Leehom Wang (“Blackhat”) and Jing Tian (“Great Wall”). Based upon the life of Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winner Pearl S. Buck, who was in China during the upheaval of the 1920s. The story follows the “Ten Years Civil War” which took place between the Communists and Nationalists after the Nanking Incident of 1927. Her family escaped Nanking with the help of her family’s nanny and moved to Shanghai. She left China in 1934 and never returned.
Buck won the Pulitzer Prize in 1931 for her novel “The Good Earth,” about the struggle of Chinese farmers, and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1938, “for her rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China and for her biographical masterpieces.” She also wrote “Peony” a deeply moving romance about the last Jew in K’aifeng in the province of Hunan.
The 1937 movie “The Good Earth” starred Paul Muni and Luise Rainer, who won an Academy Award for best actress.
During the Beijing Film Festival 2012, writer/ producer/ director Roxanne Messina Captor tied in China Film Group to co-finance and co-produce her project. About 85% of the film will be shot in China.
Binoche, who won an Oscar for “The English Patient,” recently starred in “Clouds of Sils Maria” and will be seen next in Mike Medavoy’s mining rescue drama “The 33″ opposite Antonio Banderas. She’s repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment. Roxanne and the project are also repped by CAA.
Roxanne has also been invited by the Pearl Buck foundation to present her research paper on Buck in the Pearl Buck Symposium to be held in Zhenjiang early September. This is Pearl’s hometown and museum.
“Pearl” is scheduled to start production in 2016 in Zhejiang Province, Shanghai and Prague. Vilmos Zsigmond has been attached as the cinematographer.
"I found so many parallels in Pearl's life. At twelve I followed my two professional passions, writing and dancing. Both stayed with me as my career expanded to directing. Pearl and I believe anything can manifest with passion and determination."
A Juilliard Theater School graduate, Roxanne Messina Captor was with Chicago Lyric Opera Ballet, Harkness Ballet, New York Metropolitan Opera Ballet and performed as a guest artist with Rudolph Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov. She has performed On and Off Broadway under the direction of Bob Fosse, Michael Bennett, Uta Hagen, Robert Lewis (Yale Repertory Theatre).
As a theatre director and choreographer working in Regional and Off-Broadway theatre. Francis Ford Coppola chose Captor to assist Gene Kelly with the choreography of "One From the Heart." She danced in the films “Cotton Club”, "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas," "Xanadu" and "Pennies From Heaven.
