Annie cheated twice - spoilers
nicci197214 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
So she was wanting to play a fair game? Then why did she push Michael for saying no he did not want to talk about his secret - that was true And then the ending shenanigans.

Of course at that point they should have been willing to do ANYTHING. Sure they may have lost their friendship but they would have saved their lives.

The only death that was legit was the first on because it might have taken me a minute to believe. I do realize horror movie people don't realize they are in a horror.

Could have been great; could have been scary and it could have been better.

Annie just was not terrifying enough
Aaron137526 October 2019
My wife picked out this movie and we watched it and I thought it had some moments, was not boring; however, it suffered from one too many flaws to be considered good. Apparently, it is part of a series called, Tales From the Dark, but I would still consider it a movie considering its run time of an hour and twenty minutes. This film reminded me of another board game horror film called, "Beyond the Gates" and both are pretty much a horror version of Jumanji. This one had some good moments, but I feel it needed some repairs and polish.

The story has a group of friends spending Halloween together, which happens to coincide with the anniversary of a friend's death. I thought that their friend was the guy in the precredit sequence who looked like Shaggy from Scooby Doo, but no, it was a different guy. Well, one of the dudes has a girlfriend and she invites two friends over and together they all have on the worst and laziest Halloween costumes ever as we have dude in Santa shirt and hat, guy in fabulous robe, man in a shirt that may be knightish, cheerleader who has been beaten up, sad prom queen and goth girl with vampire teeth. Well, they decide to play a game and the girl just happens to bring a game called, "Uncanny Annie" from the basement and this is the title of the film, so this is the game they are going to play. Unfortunately, this is an evil game and they must overcome the vague rules to win the game or Annie kills you!

The main problem with the film is that the evil character of Annie is not all that scary looking and borderline cute! This, of course, undercuts the terror as the first scene was almost something out of a comedy. Then the characters are so annoying in that even with being hit square in the face that what is happening is real, they keep denying it and further dwindling their chances of survival. Then at times it seems they do something right and fail and do some wrong and pass.

So, it had some potential, but just needs a few tweaks here and there. "Beyond the Gates" needing tweaking too as it just did not have enough going on. This one did feature more, but once Annie appears, it loses a lot of tension and atmosphere. In the end, I am sure if the characters had to do it all over again, they would have instead chosen to play Risk; okay, maybe not, if they had tried that one they would have been stuck in limbo forever!

Interesting concept
kaylakeller-093584 October 2019
This movie is pretty middle of the road for me. It wasn't exceptional, but it wasn't bad by any means. I enjoyed it, actually. When I read the description, I thought "oh goodness, please don't tell me this will have a Jumanji feel..." it does not have that! It's definitely similar in the fact that it's a board game. But that's where the similarities end. The acting is decent, I especially liked Annie's performance. This will be a very creepy movie is you're under 17, but otherwise, it's not much of a spook. Give it a shot, you may like it.

Alright Ensemble Cast Movie
Mikey-Elite4 October 2019
Hulu opened up the second season of its Into The Dark series with this middle of the road film. The movies in this series are not consistent in terms of quality. Uncanny Annie may not be anywhere near the top of the series, but it also isn't at the bottom.

Uncanny Annie will not scare you. It is not a scary movie at all. However, it does make good use of the ensemble cast in ways I was surprised by. It is a predictable little movie, but you watch it for the entertainment if anything. It makes for a passable movie for Halloween, especially if you're doing the October Challenge and need another film to fill up a spot.

Six stars out of ten.

Another good idea, badly executed...
MsHoneyBee6 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I LOVE this idea so much. I enjoyed the characters and their struggles, even though they actors weren't at the top of their game so much. I really wanted to like this but it was just so subpar.

I think this movie needed more time to really explain connections, crank up the scares and expand things. I can't imagine it being a longer film, but... work with me here. For instance, when the prankster was around, his scenes really could have given a fun spin on the terror but everything was so short and quick, and cliche.

There just really needed to be more. More scares, more good acting, more connections...

I'm 50/50 on whether I would recommend this movie or not. I kinda liked it!

Better than some of the others
africe5 October 2019
Probably my highest rating for an into the dark episode. They were on the right track but totally screwed the ending. If Annie was so set on rules then she would have lost. She broke the rules and therefore she should have been punished. Totally hated the ending

Don't see why people hate it THAT much

Yes sure this movie is far from perfect. But I enjoyed it for what it was (horror jumanji).

Meh...
shaylad20556 October 2019
To me this was the weakest entry of the series. The acting was okay but the characters were very dumb. Annie's movements were creepy but she was actually more annoying than scary. They had a great idea but it was poorly executed.

The best episode of ItD
patrickfilbeck23 September 2021
This creepy jumanji rip-off is entertaining, creepy and done with some effort. Is it flawless? No. Is it the most worthwhile fun of the hit and miss series? Oh definitly yes! So give it a try and skip some other episodes.

Shouldn't have watched alone in the dark
clsrsly7 October 2019
I'm surprised by the negative internet reviews. I binge horror movies periodically, October being an obvious time to do so. I watched this alone last night and legitimately ran back to my bed feeling as if something was on my heels (Prankster) after using the bathroom. In general, the Into The Dark series has been more fun than creepy but this one, with the help of Blumhouse, left an after effect. Anytime a horror flick can do that, I'd say it's a good one.

The kill scenes are just okay but the movie is better than average and a worthwhile addition to the genr
kevin_robbins10 May 2021
Uncanny Annie (2019) is another Into the Dark picture available for free on Hulu. The storyline focuses on a possessed board game that once you start playing you have to follow the rules closely, or Uncanny Annie, the demon possessing the game will make you pay. This movie is directed by Paul Davis (Solo: A Star Wars Movie) and stars Adelaide Kane (Teen Wolf), Georgie Flores (Famous in Love), Paige McGhee (Into the Darkness) and Dylan Arnold (Halloween, 2018). The storyline for this picture is entertaining and fun to watch unfold, like a horror movie version of Jumanji. The characters are worth following and the holistic storyline comes together well. Overall the kill scenes are just okay but the movie is better than average and a worthwhile addition to the genre. I'd give this a 6-6.5/10.

Potential but failed miserably. Worst so far
MovieQween-336226 October 2019
This is by far the worst installment of the entire Into the Dark Series. Although I can't say I've been that overly impressed with the series as a whole. They're very half way done, or done by amateurs; probably both. Jason Blum is definitely not working on this series, just slapping his name on it for the checks. This one was just so horrible. The premise wasn't terrible and there could have been so many good scares but alas there were none!!! Bad CGI, bad plot execution, terrible dialogue, Annie was a joke. Goosebumps is scarier. Just please save your 80 min and watch anything else. Such a joke!

Jumanji meets slasher.
dar041731 March 2021
Jumanji meets slasher is the best way to describe this TV show/ film. It has a good amount of creepy moments and other moments that you ask yourself what where the creators thinking. The ending was a little disappointing and twist was like I guess you can do that. I assumed they would have taken it in another direction. Overall another solid entry for the Into the Dark series.

Trapped in a Board Game
TheTruthofItIs24 May 2020
From the same director as the much better episode, "The Body", comes this YA "thriller" finding our protags trapped in a board (you can be forgiven if you say "bored" instead) game governed by a malevolent spirit. It's not a fast-paced 90-mins, this would've shown better in half the time or so, too much time filler in there and that's what most complain about in all these "Into the Dark" eps. The concepts are great, the directors just aren't taking full advantage of the runway they're given, as a result, you're putting us to sleep guys!

LAME
taedirish5 December 2020
Started off pretty much by-the-numbers low grade horror. Group of college kids hanging out on Halloween decide to play a board game they found in the basement. Naturally. It was a bad idea and soon enuf they're running from CG ghosts. If they'd left it there, it would have been a decent B movie, but when they introduced "Annie", things just got damn awful. The actress was painfully bad, and the makeup they used to make her look scary just made her look like a bad actress in poorly done makeup. Oh and the end, perhaps the worst I've ever seen. NO ONE connected to this film should be proud of what they did. In fact, they should all go hide in a cave and live out their days in head-hanging shame.

Good enough
EyeSeesMovies28 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Not a super horror, but still good enough for a chill watch.

Spoiler:

The big secret wasn't actually anything that happened out of maliciousness, so I would've like to see the friends come back. Or the crime could've matched the punishment.

Worst Into The Dark by a landslide.
dwjoyce-6109319 October 2019
This film was sooo shockingly horrible I dont know where to begin. I don't have huge expectations for Into The Dark movies but I like them nonetheless. This one was just load of garbage with an awful plot line that made no sense at all.

Clunky but creative
rivertam2625 March 2020
Hulu's Into the Dark Halloween entry is a goofy but creative little film entitled Uncanny Annie. The setup is pretty by the numbers as a group of bland teens gather to play board games on Halloween night in honor of their friend who passed away last year. They find an old board game and are suddenly transported into a different place in which every move may be their last "Jumanji" style but not as exciting. There are some neat bits here and there like the grim reaper. But mostly it feels quite juvenile. It still fits in well enough with the other films in the anthology but lacks their innovative nature.

Worst episode so far.
hightecredneck-682138 October 2019
Not even one of the characters was the least bit likable. Within the first 15 minutes I was rooting for Uncanny Annie. Before 30 minutes were up I couldn't force myself to watch any longer, knowing there was still another hour and a half to suffer through, I gave up knowing it would be 90 minutes I would never get back.

One of the best episodes!!!
bangel33227 October 2019
5.7 is a harsh score. I think this was a great idea, really interesting concept and I loved the themes of the game. It was really quite clever. Yes, the episode has flaws. Not all the acting is that great, some of the dialogue is cliched and terrible. And they needed someone better to play the Annie character. She needed to be much more sinister and creepy. Should have had a child do it. But overall I really enjoyed it so much and it's probably the second best one I've seen out of all the episodes so far.

Uncanny Annie
bobcobb30130 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Was this a good movie? No, but it was actually a bit creepy and was a simple and concise plot from start to finish.

We watch Into the Dark for the cheesy bad horror stuff, not any thoughtful, so on that front it accomplished its goal.

Annie wasn't scary
LincolnSixEko14 October 2021
Plus, she broke the rules in her own game.

The movie was ok until the reveal of Annie along wihlth the ending. Annie just isn't scary. She broke the rules to get own game but that didn't matter.

The game doesn't follow its own rules.
humdrum_plannerc16 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The only reason I'm giving this two stars is because it's kind of amusing. But not really. Watch this if you really have nothing else of interest to watch.

The verisimilitude is shattered when the simplistic terms provided suggest that refusing to play the game means they lose. And the first half delivers that, to a degree.

But then it gets formulaic. It's just bad writing to suggest that following the rules is required, when the antagonistic entity apparently doesn't have to. At that point, it's just.., lame. What do the rules even matter? It's a railroad without exit. Merely a poor storyteller's pointless drama.

At the very least, provide an explanation. I mean, even Dada was more consistent.
