When news broke of the death of Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 96 on Sept. 8, the UK - and the world - began to grieve. Concerns were raised earlier in the day when a Buckingham Palace statement was released detailing that the monarch was under medical supervision as her family rushed to be by her side at Balmoral in Scotland. As is protocol, later that evening, a formal framed announcement declaring her death was fixed to the railings of Buckingham Palace.
Sept. 9 is the official first day of mourning in the UK, as the longest-serving British monarch and her seven decades of duty are remembered. Ceremonial gun salutes were fired at Hyde Park and Tower Hill, with a minute's silence held. Preparations are now underway for the queen's funeral. The new King Charles III will have met with the Earl Marshal to officially sign off on the plans.

The Mercury Prize has been postponed after news of Queen Elizabeth II’s death broke.
Audience members were in their seats waiting for the annual ceremony to begin when Buckingham Palace announced the Queen had died peacefully at Balmoral, aged 96.
Organisers told the crowd assembled at London’s Eventim Apollo they had decided to call off the ceremony “in light of the sad news”.
The event was scheduled to begin an hour after the news was announced. Earlier in the day, organisers cancelled the planned red carpet.
Messages displayed on the screen read: “In light of the sad news of the passing of Her Majesty the Queen. we are sorry to announce that we will not be proceeding with this evening's event as planned.
“Mercury Prize will be communicating with guests and audience members over the coming days. We thank you for your understanding at this difficult and sad time.

Exclusive: The murders of two members of a prominent family of South Carolina lawyers and the mysterious events that followed are to be explored in a multi-part doc series for HBO Max.
The streamer is developing Murdaugh Family Mysteries (w/t) with Campfire Studios, the company behind Hulu doc WeWork: Or the Making and Breaking of a $47B Unicorn.
The series will investigate the mysterious, still-unraveling events surrounding the murders of a mother and son from a prominent family of lawyers in small-town South Carolina.
On June 7, Alex Murdaugh found his 52-year-old wife, Maggie, and 22-year-old son, Paul, brutally murdered at their home in Islandton, Sc. Their killings spawning a media frenzy — both locally and nationally — due to the family’s reputation as a legal dynasty in the area.
In the months that have followed, while the case has gone cold, speculation has run rampant around potential connections, possible motivations and suspects.

CBS has started to pare down its returning series slate for next season, cancelling comedy The Unicorn‘s after two seasons. It is one two sophomore series the network won’t be bringing back, along with drama All Rise. Two other CBS bubble series, Seal Team and Clarice, are eying a move to Paramount+.
From the get-go, the single-camera Unicorn, starring Walton Goggins, has been, well, an unicorn, on CBS, not quite fitting into the network’s traditional sitcom mold.
Yet, the series, which was well received by critics and features one of the strongest comedy casts on TV, had big fans at the highest ranks at CBS, which helped it snag a Season 2 renewal last year for a limited midseason run, which concluded in March.
The Unicorn’s linear ratings were among the lowest on CBS but its Live+Same Day delivery was actually higher than that for the renewed S.

CBS is handing out series orders!
While the network is passing on Patrick Dempsey's political drama, Ways and Means, and two others, they picked up a comedy and a drama.
Another potential series, Only True Lies, has been pushed off-cycle but is still in contention.
A multicamera comedy titled Smallwood starting Pete Holmes has been given the greenlight.
It comes from executive producers David Hollander and Brian D'Arcy James, and the pilot was directed by Mark Cendrowski.
Holmes stars as an ordinary guy who turns to pro bowling to support his family after being laid off from the Gm factory.
Chi McBride and Katie Lowes costar.
Smallwood, from CBS Studios, seems like a good fit for Holmes.
He previously created and starred on Crashing that aired on HBO from 2017-19.
The Sophia Bush pilot, Good Sam, also got the greenlight.

Earlier this week, WeWork, the office-share company, announced that it had lost $3.2 billion in 2020. For WeWork, that was good news: Its losses were down from $3.5 billion the previous year, when its megalomaniacal co-founder, Adam Neumann, was ousted as CEO. At his most profligate, the entrepreneur had been spending $100 million a week to attract a multibillion-dollar investment that would never come. As a newscaster intones, Neumann’s leadership took WeWork “from a $47 billion valuation to near bankruptcy in just six weeks.”

Many companies these days throw around terms like “innovation,” “digital transformation,” and “entrepreneurial culture” without actually doing anything unique, a core critique lobbied by NYU professor Scott Galloway when assessing the value of real-estate start-up WeWork, who was valued like a tech company rather than a real estate company. Jed Rothstein’s energetic business documentary WeWork: Or the Making and Breaking of a $47 Billion Unicorn explores the toxic side of the real estate company later known as The We Company and its flamboyant founder Adam Neumann.

Distance sure can make the heart grow fonder, but it also has the power to smother a flame.

Udpated with more info: Univision’s three-hour Premio Lo Nuestro topped Thursday in the adults 18-49 demographic, sweeping primetime among the broadcast networks.
Among the Big 4 and the CW, Young Sheldon was Thursday’s most-watched program and matched ABC’s Celebrity Wheel of Fortune in the adults 18-49 demographic on a night that also saw CBS’ drama rookie Clarice dip a tenth from its debut a week ago but keep its viewership.
Univision was No. 1 in the demo with Premio Lo Nuestro drawing a 0.8 rating and 2.53 million viewers. The annual Latin music featured performances by Selena Gomez and Daddy Yankee and saw Bad Buddy walk away with the most wins (seven). It aired live from Miami and was hosted by Chiquinquirá Delgado, José Ron and Yuri as hosts of the three-hour show.
CBS, ABC and Fox tied for second behind Univsion in the demo. CBS won overall in viewers, with Young Sheldon steady with last week to pace the network’s comedy block which was back to originals, with B Positive also even. Mom, back for the first episode since announcing this will be its last season, and The Unicorn were both down a tenth.
That provided the lead-in to Clarice, with the 10 Pm thriller series based on Thomas Harris’ novels down a tenth in the demo from its 0.5 start but steady with last’s week’s audience of 4 million in Nielsen’s Live+Same Day fast affiliates. Like last week, it kept 100% of its Unicorn demo lead-in.
In addition to Wheel of Fortune, which rose a tenth week over week, ABC’s game-show lineup included fresh episodes of The Chase and The Hustler, both steady.
On NBC, The Mayor, which grew a tenth, and an encore of Young Rock led into a new Law & Order: Svu, which topped the 9 p.m. hour in the demo as it returned from a break. Dateline followed and jumped two tenths with the first installment of its three-part investigative miniseries The Widower.
Fox’s night included fresh helpings of Hell’s Kitchen and comedies Call Me Kat and Last Man Standing, all steady with last week. On the CW, Walker and Legacies were both even.

The week of Nov. 9 was the first time in this disrupted TV season that ratings stalwarts “This Is Us” and “Grey’s Anatomy” clashed at the top of the Live+7 charts.
For that particular week, both series added a 1.2 ratings point, with the ABC medical show narrowly coming out the winner at a 2.6 rating to the NBC drama’s 2.5 rating. The two shows were easily the biggest gainers after seven days of delayed viewing, as “Chicago P.D.” and “The Good Doctor” both added a 0.8 to end with a 1.8 and a 1.4 respectively.
“The Masked Singer” and “The Bachelorette” tied the unscripted race, both finishing with a 2.2 rating in Live+7.
In terms of total viewership, “This Is Us” and “Good Doctor” both added 4.3 million viewers, as the former ended with a week-topping 11.1 million. NBC held the top four non-football places for the week, with the three “Chicago” dramas all managing over 10 million pairs...

CBS wants to pivot from telling people it’s the nation’s most-watched TV network to making them more aware of the programs it distributes across many different screens.
The network, the flagship business of ViacomCBS, wants to make sure modern viewers continue to recognize the outlet behind “Blue Bloods,” “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and “Survivor” as a force for big-audience entertainment. But these days, audiences fan out across traditional TV, streaming video hubs, mobile screens and more – and TV companies need to collect them wherever they can be found.

Will broadcast television survive Covid-19?
That question was raised early in this perpetual lockdown.
Time was one of those who go the party started with an article titled "What Will TV Look Like After the Pandemic?"
There's no doubt that broadcast nets are suffering. They've been scraping by for years.
While some scripted shows always seem to gather an audidence, such as the franchises like NCIS, One Chicago, and 9-1-1, or heavy hitters like This Is Us and Grey's Anatomy, broadcast has leaned heavily on unscripted content, and that's what gets the ratings.
For a site like ours, that's stuttering, at best. We don't cover unscripted in any depth because there isn't an audience for it, at least not that we've cultivated.
But it's The Masked Singer, The Voice, and America's Got Talent that top the annual ratings lists across the board. Somehow, they're almost unstoppable. They also managed to...

While it waits for its primetime scripted series to get back into production, CBS is reaching into its ViacomCBS catalog to help fill out its fall lineup in September and October.
CBS will air the first season of CBS All Access’ “Star Trek: Discovery,” the recently-completed fourth season of Pop’s “One Day at a Time” and Spectrum Originals’ “Manhunt: Deadly Game.” Summer reality series “Big Brother” and “Love Island,” the latter of which began its second season on Monday, started later and will bleed into the fall, further buttressing CBS’ Covid-impacted fall lineup.
“This is hardly a traditional fall season, but we are prepared with a strong slate of original content while our regular scripted series begin production,” said Kelly Kahl, President, CBS Entertainment. “Based on our current timeline, we hope to start rolling out our previously announced fall series as they become available in November.”

Rob Corddry, a Daily Show alum, Emmy-winner and star of CBS sitcom The Unicorn, will headline a joint Medscape and WebMD fundraiser this Thursday, April 16. The effort is in support of Project C.U.R.E, an international organization focused on providing face masks and other protective medical equipment to millions of healthcare workers.

Funny You Should Mask will run simultaneously on the WebMD and Medscape Facebook pages on April 16 beginning at 8 Pm Et. The show will feature Corddry and fellow comedians Dr. Ken Jeong, Eric Andre, Sasheer Zamata, Nicole Byer, and Kumail Nanjiani talking with doctors and nurses on the Covid-19 front lines about what they are experiencing and what healthcare workers need.
Conversations include a nurse working in an underserved community, two New York City transplant surgeons who have transformed their office into a Covid-19 positive facility, an emergency medicine doctor in Los Angeles who continues to work from home to support her staff and patients, an epidemiologist who is pushing for increased testing, and an emergency medicine doctor from Portland, Oregon caring for Covid-19 patients.
“There’s nothing funny about coronavirus, but that doesn’t mean a little levity won’t lift the sagging spirits of any healthcare professional who needs it,” said Corddry.
“As the largest news, clinical tools and continuing education resource for healthcare professionals around the world, Medscape seemed like a natural fit for the collaboration,” said Ivan Oransky, M.D., Medscape’s vice president of editorial.
Similarly, WebMD is the most popular site for consumers seeking information on health-related topics. Both sites have seen dramatic increases in engagement since the Covid-19 outbreak began.
“We were excited that Rob and his comedy buddies wanted to work with Medscape, particularly to support a charity focused on addressing the critical shortages in masks and other personal protective equipment (Ppe),” he said. “These are extraordinarily difficult times for healthcare workers, and bringing some laughter, and importantly support for the work that they do, is a great effort.”
“Besides, we’re not very funny,” said Oransky.
Project C.U.R.E, the world’s largest distributor of donated medical relief, including masks, gloves and Ppe is now devoting all its resources to support healthcare workers in the U.S.
“We have been working hard to take care of the brave women and men who are fighting the Covid-19 fight on the frontlines of our community,” said Douglas Jackson, PhD, Jd, President and CEO, Project C.U.R.E.
“To partner with WebMD/Medscape and Rob Corddry on this project is an incredible encouragement, both to the nurses and doctors that we are working to help and to the thousands of Project C.U.R.E. volunteers who are in the warehouses, driving the trucks and committed to winning the battle. The idea that we can do serious work and put a smile on the faces of these terrific people is really magical. It’s this type of thing that will get us through.”
All the proceeds from Funny You Should Mask will go to purchasing and distributing essential medical supplies to Us healthcare workers.

Sunday night’s season 3 premiere of Emmy-winning drama series Westworld drew 1.7 million viewers across the night (two linear plays plus digital), down from Season 2’s debut episode. Audience for the 9 Pm telecast drew 901,000 viewers, up 24% from The Outsider‘s premiere and 13% above Watchmen, according to HBO. We thought those crazy kids would stay together forever…said no one, ever.
Days after the awkward and highly rated episode of The Bachelor ended with star Peter Weber and Madison Prewett together despite the misgivings of his mother, each has announced on Instagram that the relationship is kaput and they have gone their separate ways. This came after a two-parter with plenty of twists and turns, including Peter choosing another contestant — Hannah Ann — and then selecting Madison after he was spurned. This after Madison spurned him because he had behaved in randy fashion in the “fantasy suite” with another contestant just before.

After escaping a black-and-white world on Thursday’s Legacies, Hope & Co. found themselves navigating some serious gray area.
To help the students of the Salvatore School work through their ongoing issues, Emma transported their collective consciousness into a noir-themed chambre de chasse, a brilliant invention of the real Professor Vardemus. Wade Felton aka the titular widower of The Unicorn has a lot going on as the CBS comedy serves up its freshman finale this Thursday at 8:30/7:30c. For one, his older daughter, Grace, has an important dance she may or may not go to. And that momentous occasion coincides with Jill’s birthday, his late wife’s first since she passed on.
TVLine spoke with series star Walton Goggins about the hidden pleasures of network comedy (versus the cable-tv fare to which he is accustomed), how he helped shape The Unicorn‘s season finale, and the very familiar...

An artist named Sweet Cecily Daniher on Monday sued Disney, Pixar and Onward producer Kori Rae for allegedly conspiring to secretly create an animated doppelganger of her one-of-a-kind van without permission.
She calls it the "Vanicorn," and, according to her lawsuit, it's the result of her lifelong love of the mythical beasts.
"At the risk of belaboring the point, the Plaintiff has had a real thing for unicorns, for a very long time, and they have been a central theme and subject matter of her artistic work, throughout the entirety of her career," states the ...

CBS has set premiere dates for retuning comedy Man With a Plan, starring Matt LeBlanc, and new sitcom Broke, starring Jaime Camil and Pauley Perrette. Both will join the schedule on April 2, airing in the Thursday 8:30 Pm and 9:30 Pm slot, respectively.
Man with a Plan, heading into its fourth season, will succeed Unicorn while Broke will replace Carol’s Second Act after both freshmen comedies complete their runs. Unicorn and Carol’s Second Act both received five-episode back orders from CBS for a 18-episode Season 1, short of the traditional full-season 22 episodes. Both are on the bubble for renewal.
Man With a Plan and Broke were the only remaining CBS scripted series left on the bench when the network unveiled its winter schedule in November. Also waiting in the wings is reality veteran The Amazing Race, which CBS brass may keep on the shelf as backup in case a writers...

Here’s a little good news about our latest renewal update: Not a single CW series is in danger of getting cancelled. Earlier this month, the network picked up its entire lineup for the 2020-21 season.
But the remaining four broadcast nets have yet to follow The CW’s early-renewal lead, which means a dozen-plus series on ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC remain vulnerable ahead of May’s upfront announcements. The fate of a handful of struggling series have already been decided (R.I.P., NBC’s Bluff City Law and Sunnyside), while several others are all but certain to relocate to...

An NFL dominated night saw the premiere of Fox’s “Flirty Dancing,” which posted a decent TV ratings debut.
Fox debuted the Jenna Dewan-hosted dancing-dating show on Sunday to a 1.0 rating among adults 18-49 and 3.5 million total viewers. It’s worth noting, however, that the premiere aired live across all time zones and a substantial NFL lead-in provided a handy ratings Tango partner for the show. For the time being, those figures are roughly on par with the other Fox series debuts from the 2019-2020 TV season. Reruns of “Bless The Harts” and “Family Guy” followed with a significant drop-off to a 0.4 rating and 1.3 and 1.2 million viewers respectively.
A vital “Sunday Night Football” contest between the Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers drew 17.35 million viewers on NBC in the fast nationals. The California-based team won the contest 26-21, snatching the number 1 seed in the highly competitive Nfc in the process.

HBO Max is the studio on both.
Written by Brownstein and Ganz (Santa Clarita Diet) and directed by Einhorn (The Kids Are Alright), Gumshoe is about a sweet, optimistic young cop and a creepy, crime-obsessed teenager who secretly team up to solve a murder.
Longtime writing partners Brownstein and Ganz wrote Gumshoe on spec and sold it to HBO Max. They will serve as showrunners on the pilot, which they will executive produce with Einhorn as well Conaco’s O’Brien, David Kissinger, Jeff Ross, and Larry Sullivan.

CBS is doubling down on all its new shows.
The network has renewed “Evil” for a second season, and handed out full-season orders to its other four freshman series, namely “All Rise,” “Carol’s Second Act,” “The Unicorn,” and “Bob Hearts Abishola.”
“Evil” is set to conclude its 13-episode first season on Jan. 30, 2020, while the other four will still have to wait until later in the season for a definitive renewal decision.
“These terrific new series have attracted a passionate base of viewers and consistent ratings while delivering entertaining, inclusive and relevant storytelling every week,” said Kelly Kahl, president of CBS Entertainment. “They’re off to strong starts and are still being discovered on the many catch-up and playback options available to our viewers today.
