This coming week is shaping up to be a good one for Netflix content, and that’s saying quite a lot considering how solid the output has been on the streaming platform over the past few months of worldwide quarantining. If you’re looking for an exciting collection of adult drama and kid-friendly adventures, though, May 11th through the 17th has you covered.
Fans of goofy, occasionally offensive adult cartoons will appreciate that season 3 of Bordertown will launch on Netflix this month. But if that’s a not quite up your alley, or you want something to watch with the kids, you can also check out all three seasons of the hit Nickelodeon show, Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Meanwhile, those looking for a classic thriller can check out the 2009 Johnny Depp film Public Enemies. The movie, which chronicles an attempt to take down gangsters in the 1930s, did fairly well...

For as intriguing as innovations in TV structure are, the first question I had about “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” doing an “interactive” special was simply, “….why?” For as long as books and games and even YouTube playlists have indulged “choose your own adventure” style storytelling, which gives its audience the illusion of free will while picking between prewritten options to shift the plot, television’s never quite been able to crack it. Before streaming, there was no way to let TV viewers drive the story; afterward, streaming networks still largely stuck to preexisting TV structure, sans commercial breaks. Even “Bandersnatch,” Netflix’s first stab at the format via its technological nightmare drama “Black Mirror,” mostly uses an interactive interface to unfurl a series of disturbing taunts rather than compelling narratives.
With “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. The Reverend,” Netflix is trying again with a starkly different approach than its “Black Mirror” stab.

Who would have thunk that some random genre movie featuring a vampire priest could turn out so horribly? Don’t answer that, it’s a rhetorical question, but The Reverend does absolutely nothing to advance crazy cult cinema blending religion and horror, as writer/director Neil Jones offers a fangless, spiritless chore to sit through. When I’m watching a screener, I can always preempt reviews with an initial reaction based on how many times I glance at my phone for momentary relief. For every glance, a film loses a review star. Based on that scale, The Reverend should have stood around -1,395 stars, but since our rating scale doesn’t exactly go that low, some adjustments had to be made – but please understand how atrociously underwhelming this vengeful vampire story reveals itself to be.
Stuart Brennan stars as the titular Reverend, a new priest in a small, rural town.

When basing your film on a graphic novel it’s probably a good Idea to make sure the book is readily available and has something of a following before you go ahead with the film adaptation.
This is looking less and less likely to be a regular occurrence in a world where studios are snatching up rights to every comic before the first issue has even gone to print. So it is the case with The Reverend, a film based on a graphic novel which even the film’s own website lists as ‘coming soon’ and whose pages we glimpse in the opening credits further confusing an already schizophrenic movie.
The film starts well enough with Rutger Hauer as a character who may as well have ‘The Devil’ and a down arrow hanging around his forehead, approaching a bishop about the soul of a young man he wants. This scene...

★★☆☆☆ Rutger Hauer plays Satan, Doug Bradley is a priest, Shane Ritchie camps it up as a vile pimp and Tamer Hassan aims for gentrified land owner. That sentence alone should make Neil Jones' low-budget British horror worth watching, but The Reverend (2011) is unfortunately hamstrung by a muddled screenplay, unconvincing central performance and a lack of knowing that its casting would otherwise suggest might be present.

The Reverend
Stars: Stuart Brennan, Tamer Hassan, Rutger Hauer, Doug Bradley, Giovanni Lombardo Radice, Emily Booth, Simon Phillips, Shane Richie | Written and Directed by Neil Jones
Sometimes it’s good to start watching a film with low expectations. This is not being negative about the film; it’s just a case of not knowing much about it and giving it a chance to surprise. With The Reverend I decided to do this even though the cast actually shows some real potential. It’s not every day Rutger Hauer and Doug Bradley appear in a relatively small budget film together, and even the inclusion of Shane Richie from Eastenders was quite a surprise to see.
The story, which proclaims itself based on a graphic novel, is about a new Reverend who has been given an easy job for his first parish. Stuck between a peaceful village and quite close to a...

Ted (15)
(Seth MacFarlane, 2012, Us) Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane, Joe McHale, Giovanni Ribisi. 106 mins
Those unconvinced by MacFarlane's Family Guy cartoon series will be even less convinced by his first feature – basically a routine manchild/bromance story with one novel idea: Wahlberg has a magic talking teddy, which has grown up into an obnoxious party animal – thus creating relationship issues with shrewish girlfriend Kunis. It's all gags and no comedy. And if you're anything other than white, male and pop culture-literate, you'll find the humour at best patchy, at worst, downright nasty.
Sound Of My Voice (15)
(Zal Batmanglij, 2011, Us) Christopher Denham, Nicole Vicius, Brit Marling. 85 mins
As with Another Earth, co-writer Marling takes an unorthodox line through a familiar genre here. This time she's a spacey/scary cult leader who claims to be from the year 2054. A couple of investigative journalists get out of their depth taking her on.

The Dark Knight Rises stays atop of the box office mountain this week taking in over three times more than its nearest rival in the process. It’s difficult to see anything displacing it for a few weeks yet, perhaps even until the new Bourne movie hits screens in a few weeks’ time. The Lorax meanwhile went in at the number 2 spot but it did so only by a narrow margin over its animated rival, Ice Age 4, which has now of course already been out for 5 weeks. Universal may have hoped for a slightly stronger opening weekend but with the school holidays in full swing they may still have a good few weeks ahead as parents are looking for that family friendly option.

★☆☆☆☆ You could be forgiven for thinking that a film entitled The Reverend (2011) would be a life affirming experience. Unfortunately, the new indie Brit horror written and directed by Neil Jones and starring Stuart Brennan, Tamer Hassan, Rutger Hauer and Doug Bradley is devoid of any such saving grace - sitting through it is an endurance test akin to penance.

Fresh from seminary school, a new Reverend arrives at his first parish; a small chapel in an apparently idyllic country village. With an amazing line-up announced for the festival, reaching its 13th year this August, Emily is one busy lady -- but lucky for us, she’s an early riser and found time in her morning routine to fit in a brief discussion of her career to date and working alongside such iconic genre giants as Doug Bradley and Rutger Hauer, as well as...

Writer/director Neil Jones' new British horror flick 'The Reverend' still hasn't got a release date just yet but with Rutger Hauer ('Hobo With A Shotgun') on board and a variety of British names attached we don't think it'll be too long. I mean with the likes of Doug Bradley ('Hellraiser') and the gorgeous Emily Booth (below) on board we'd be churning this out in theatres as we speak. The new Reverend of a small village parish gets bitten by a mysterious girl and finds himself preaching to or feasting on the locals. You can check out the trailer below which is being touted on some sites as being new but in truth came to light a few months back when the official site for 'The Reverand' went live. Tamer Hassan ('Kick-Ass'), Geovanni Lombardo Radice and 'Eastender's star Shane Richie also appear in the flick.

Based on the graphic novel of the same name, director Neil Jones’ “The Reverend” drops Rutger Hauer and Doug Bradley into a bloody little tale about a group of religious types who are summoned to battle legions of extremely evil vampires. An insanely original premise? Not really, but the film does feature Hauer and Bradley, though they’ll only get you so far. Unfortunately, the trailer leaves a little to be desired, though this might have more to do with dodgy editing than anything else. We’ll just have to wait and see, I suppose. Unfamiliar with the Reverend’s universe? Read this: Fresh from seminary school a new Reverend embarks on his first parish. While on the surface the village seems to be a peaceful parish, with perfect residents, soon it becomes apparent...

God Bless Rutger Hauer.
I’ve believed in Hauer Power dating all the way back to Nighthawks, and Hobo With A Shotgun cemented that belief. Now, the legend that is Rutger Hauer is starring as a sinister priest in a new horror film called The Reverend, and a cool new trailer has just popped up on the film’s official website. The movie is described as follows:

The Reverend is director Neil Jones. new film, and it.s a bit of a mess, but it earns points for sheer ambition. The film is an adaptation of a comic book series that I can only find patchy information on and seems to have not yet been released. It concerns a young reverend in a sleepy English village who discovers a shady underworld of crime and corruption and becomes involved with supernatural forces after being targeted in a high stakes religious wager between the head of the church and someone who may be the Devil Himself. Sounds like fun but this micro-budgeted affair contains as many missteps as it does sure footing. Short story is that I wanted to like this more than I did and it felt like the school friend who.s always being bullied, but who you can.t be bothered to defend because he keeps attracting the bully.s attention.

(Please Note: The version of The Reverend that screened at Grimm Up North 2011 was a final edit that had only been completed several days before the festival started, and it is certainly possible director Neil Jones may choose to work on it further before it gets any kind of release outside the festival circuit. I believe his decision to let his film be shown in public is justification enough for me to criticise it as harshly as I'm about to do - just in his defense, do bear this in mind.)A good way to sum up Neil Jones' woeful The Reverend is this: it's the kind of film that proudly sports 'Based on the graphic novel' in the credits, when the graphic novel doesn't...

The British Horror Film Festival, now in its second year, took place in London and Bournemouth over October 14th and 15th 2011, boasting a line-up of new home-grown genre fare. As well as the three films covered below, the festival opened with the premier of vampire thriller “The Reverend”, directed by Neil Jones (best known for boxing bio “Risen”) and starring Rutger Hauer, Tamer Hassan and Pinhead himself, Doug Bradley, and also included horror comedy “Kill Keith” and a showcase of short films. The Holding “The Holding” might seem somewhat of an odd choice for a festival designed around showing off genre talent, given that it’s not really a horror film at all, but a tightly wound rural suspense thriller with a few touches of murder and madness thrown in. Marking the feature debut of director Susan Jacobson, the film stars Kierston Wareing (recently in “Fish Tank” and “Basement”) as its chief woman in peril,...

Shooting has finally wrapped on Neil Jones' The Reverend and you can find a trio of new images featuring Stuart Brennan, Tamer Hassan and Emily Booth. The movie recently wrapped filming in Cardiff, with the director Neil Jones saying he was thrilled with the footage: "It was a tough 5 week shoot, with plenty of night shoots, but the crew were superb and the cast really stepped up to the plate. I'm excited to start the edit and see it come together now, and to have excitement left at this stage; that's always a good sign." Rutger Hauer has taken the role of the Devil in the film, a role that he enjoyed immensely and Neil said he was a pleasure to work with. "There are a few actors that you always look to work with and for me, Rutger was a name at the top of my...

The ultimate villain, Satan, makes an appearance (twice!) in this week's Horror Bites. To start, "The Hangover's" Bradley Cooper, supposedly in talks to star in "The Crow" remake, has now set his sights on an adaptation of "Paradise Lost" – no, it has nothing to do with the metal band – and Cooper may be playing the big bad himself, Lucifer. Rutger Hauer won't let anyone show him up, though, and is also engaging in a little devilry on screen.
"Paranormal Activity 3" is slipping into "Saw's" place as the new Halloween franchise. Oren Peli and his crew have brought on a team of "documentary" filmmakers to direct their latest installment in the supernatural series. Pants will be peed this October, for sure. Meanwhile, the cast of "Piranha 3Dd" is rounding out quite nicely – and may need to increase a cup size – with the addition of some familiar faces,...

You know your considered successful when you've been in more classics than nameable, and Rutger Hauer would be what I would describe as "successful" -- I mean if its one thing he's good at, it's being the bad guy. He manages to pull off all his roles spectacularly, which I especially reinforce as a kick-ass villain. His role as Roy Batty in my personal favorite movie of all time Blade Runner is, nothing short of unforgettable. Then who better to approach for the role of the greatest villain of all time, and no I'm not making a Osama Bin Laden reference, but the Devil!
