Duran Duran celebrate their longevity on “Anniversary,” the latest single from their upcoming album Future Past.
Paired with a visualizer, the track opens with their signature New Wave sound — a barrage of synths and guitar — before Simon Le Bon enters: “Come celebrate this union/Come holy and unchained.”
“‘Anniversary’ is a special song for us,” John Taylor said in a statement. “Obviously we were conscious of our own impending 40th anniversary of making music together, but we wanted the song’s meaning to be inclusive in the broadest possible way.

The Nashville Film Festival will return in late September and early October with a hybrid slate of in-person and online screenings and events — with several music documentaries figuring into the programming, including docs about Brian Wilson, the pioneering 1970s all-female rock band Fanny and the MTV-era group A-ha, plus the world premiere of a film that takes John Hiatt and Jerry Douglas into Nashville’s famed RCA Studio B.
Music-based films take up only a sliver of the overall roster at the Sept. 30-Oct. 6 festival. Among narrative highlights, the festival will wrap up with A24’s “The Humans,” Stephen Karam’s adaptation of his Tony Award-winning play, with Karam and other guests from the film in attendance.
Altogether, 160 films — 45 of which are feature-length entries — have been selected for the 52nd annual festival, a little more than 50 of which will screen in-person at venues throughout Nashville. More than 30 of the features are getting their U.

ITV, the UK commercial broadcaster behind global hits like Downton Abbey and Midsomer Murders, has revealed that it is casting actors from diverse backgrounds in more than a quarter of lead roles in its drama series.
ITV published the figure in its Diversity Acceleration Plan report, which provides a health check on diversity and inclusion commitments made by the broadcaster in July last year, at the height of the Black Lives Matter movement.
ITV said 26% of the available 2,886 lead roles in its dramas were filled by Black, Asian, and minority ethnic talent between July 2020 and April 2021. That’s a 33% increase on the same 10-month period to April 2020, when 572, or 21%, of 2,731 headline roles went to diverse talent.
As an example of progress, the broadcaster pointed to the casting of Tala Gouveia in Mammoth Screen’s crime series McDonald & Dodds. Gouveia has previously told The Guardian that it “means a lot...

In the summer of 2016, members of the Turkish armed forces attempted to stage a coup d’état against the government of strongman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The putsch failed, and in its aftermath came a sweeping purge that led to the suspension or dismissal of tens of thousands of soldiers, judges, teachers, police and civil servants, as well as a crackdown against those alleged to be connected to the opposition Gulen movement.
Since then, over one million Turkish nationals have been investigated for terrorism and possible support for the coup attempt. Over half of them have been arrested, while more than 75,000 Turks have fled to Europe to seek asylum. Those events form the backdrop to “Invisible,” Greek journalist Marianna Kakaounaki’s feature directorial debut, which follows three exiled Turks as they struggle to adapt to new lives in Greece. Exclusive: Mammoth Screen, the British producer behind series including The Serpent and Poldark, is developing a television drama based on the 18th Century slave uprising in Haiti.
The story will be told through the eyes of Toussaint Louverture — who helped turn the tide against slavery internationally through his actions in Haiti — after Mammoth optioned Sudhir Hazareesingh’s biography Black Spartacus: The Epic Life of Toussaint Louverture.
The Baillie Gifford Prize longlisted book is a comprehensive look at the life of Louverture, a former slave, who became the leader of the colony’s black population, the commander of its republican army, and eventually its governor until he was seized by Napoléon Bonaparte’s invading army in 1802.
Hazareesingh describes Louverture as a warrior, philosopher, nation-builder, and founding father of Haiti, characterizing him in the book as the “world’s first black superhero.” Hazareesingh’s biography was hailed as “a tour de force” by The Guardian.

In its first year out, the San Sebastian Film Festival’s Works in Progress Europa showcase has selected five films that explore such timely themes as imprisonment, neo-colonialism, exploitation and morality.
Running Sept. 22-24 – and taking place both on site and online, attracting a powerful lineup of companies, especially from Spain and France – Wip Europa presents European films in post-production to potential partners, including producers, distributors, sales agents and programmers. The new platform is a continuation of the fest’s Glocal in Progress event.
Among this year’s projects are two Spanish titles: Arantza Santesteban’s “918 Nights,” about the filmmaker’s experience in prison, charged with terrorism, and Alvaro Gurrea’s “Ancient Soul,” an “ethno-fictional” film that examines the neo-colonial reality of the South Seas islands.
Other projects include Selman Nacar’s buzzy title, Turkish-French-Romanian co-production “Between Two Dawns,” which focuses on a man struggling to do the right thing...

Catalan auteur Lacuesta has produced to date only one feature that he didn’t direct: Jordi Morató’s documentary “The Creator of the Jungle,” made in 2013.
San Sebastian’s Vitrine Films, formerly based in Brazil, is attached to the project for Spanish distribution.
According to Iriarte, “Reescritura” is “a noir portraying three main characters searching for their place in the world. A feature with three murders, two robberies and a getaway.”
“Víctor is a very singular filmmaker. One of the few with a voice of his own,” Lacuesta told Variety “It’s very difficult to share this assertion, because all his short pieces...

(L-r) Samantha Collins, Jessie Mangum and Laura Scrivano.
While she was studying at the UK’s National Film and Television School six years ago, Australian-British screenwriter Samantha Collins wrote a screenplay about an Australian woman who goes to London in search of her missing sister.
Collins began developing the psychological drama a couple of years ago with another UK-based Aussie expat, producer Jessie Mangum.
Both women admired the works of London-based Italian-Australian filmmaker Laura Scrivano, particularly her short film Alice which starred Sarah Snook, and invited her to join the project.
Now entitled My Sister Ellie, it’s among 13 projects selected for Attagirl, the feature film development lab for female and non-binary creative teams.
Collins’ screenplay follows an Australian woman who abandons her life for a British winter, determined to bring home her pregnant sister, the surrogate of her unborn child. Clutching at clues trailing from London to the Kent coast,...
