The month of April for Hulu is jam-packed with TV and film goodies, from Adam Sandler’s 1999 comedy “Big Daddy” to Fox’s hit sitcom “New Girl.”
On top of Hulu’s rollout of a new interface, it’s also adding some major film and TV titles to its platform. Some of the highlights that set off the first day of April include “American Psycho,” “Shrek” and its sequel “Shrek 2,” plus the Tim Story-directed “Think Like a Man.”
Anime series will be all the rage on Hulu with the dubbed version of the new popular series “Chainsaw Man” arriving, along with “Spy x Family” and “Black Clover.” If you’re looking for something a little bit more kid-friendly, the family can al enjoy “Despicable Me” and “Despicable 2,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” and “Nanny McPhee.” For the lovers and heartless romantics, “Dear John” and “Date Night...

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.
Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).
The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

With its list of new releases for February 2023, Disney+ is going all out to honor one of the biggest Marvel movies of the past year (and the one with the studio’s best Oscar chances yet).
Simply put: February 2023 belongs to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on Disney+. The Black Panther sequel arrives to the streaming service on Feb. 1. Wakanda Forever serves as both a fitting sendoff to the iconic Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa and a pretty fun introduction to Tenoch Huerta as Namor.

Feb. 8 sees the arrival of Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. That will be followed up on Feb. 22 with Voices Rising: The Music of Wakanda Forever. Ice Road Truckers fans now have something new and exciting to watch. But having Liam Neeson as the middling actioner in the film does not make it interesting as it sounds. It is heightened to The Ice Road with some intentional avalanches, mechanical sabotages, and frantic gunfire. It is surprising how two movies by Liam Neeson are released after those few months in such an economy. Liam is back after The Marksman January release. In both films, he is required to upgrade his skills to save his friends. But his skills are not complex enough to terminate the bad guys,

Completing a loose trio of ice-themed films, after 2011’s “The Grey” and 2019’s “Cold Pursuit,” the Liam Neeson-starring “The Ice Road” is a serviceable, if incredibly convoluted, addition to a recent run of bland action movies that ask the actor to do the bare minimum— scowling as things explode around him.

The second film of 2021 to star Neeson, following “The Marksmen”, and written and directed by Jonathan Hensleigh, the screenwriter behind such forgettably serviceable films as “Armageddon” and “The Punisher,” “The Ice Road” takes the basic premise of an episode of “Ice Road Truckers,”—melting ice roads and the types of people that choose to drive over them—and overlays it with a confusing narrative of a nefarious drilling company in northern Manitoba.

The idea of marrying the reality-tv staple “Ice Road Truckers” with the suspense classic “The Wages of Fear” — about long-haul drivers trying to get through treacherous mountain roads with a payload of nitroglycerin — isn’t a bad one in theory. In practice, however, “The Ice Road” is so often inept and heavy-handed that not even the reliable presence of Liam Neeson can rescue it.
Neeson has become a genre unto himself in recent years, starring in one movie after another about a regular guy (with a special set of skills) who finds himself in extraordinary circumstances. (This latest is his second in 2021 alone.) But while the Irish actor reliably hits both his marks and the bad guys, he’s doing so in a film that’s leadenly predictable when it’s not unintentionally laugh-out-loud funny.

And just like that – here comes spring. Amazon Prime‘s list of new releases for April 2021 isn’t as cheery as one would expect from the sunny season. But perhaps that’s by design – you should be outside anyway!
Amazon’s most prominent original series for April 2021 is undoubtedly Them from multi-hyphenate Lena Waithe. This horror anthology’s first season, subtitled “Covenant”, will center on a Black family in the 1950s who move from North Carolina to a white neighborhood in Los Angeles. It premieres on April 9. Given its name and premise, Them is drawing some (largely joke-y) comparisons to Jordan Peele’s Us on social media. But hey, the world could always use some more Us.

Real estate shows play to many aspects of what an audience wants: fantasy, escapism, relatability, drama and personalities that can get welcomed into a viewer’s home on a regular basis. Such shows as Netflix’s “Selling Sunset,” “Million Dollar Beach House” and the ur-series of this nonfiction subgenre, “Million Dollar Listing L.A.” and “Million Dollar Listing New York,” slake a thirst for all those needs, and more.
“It is escapist, because of the quality of the homes that you’re seeing, all the high-end real estate,” ” says Shari Levine, exec VP, production, Bravo. “These are places that most people can’t afford and aren’t going to be buying. Hollywood’s frantic streaming wars have upended the industry — and some of the ways have been more surprising than others.
A+E Networks and Discovery have long been fierce TV rivals, battling for attention from consumers who are fixated on unscripted programming about history, nature and just plain bizarre people from odd walks of life. A+E is known for series such as “Storage Wars” and “Ice Road Truckers,” while Discovery has boosted shows including “Naked and Afraid” and “My Big Fat Fabulous Life.”
In the race to gain TV ratings, neither company would lift a finger to help the other. In the battle to win streaming-video subscriptions, well, it’s a very different story.
Discovery captured industry attention last week when it unveiled its Discovery Plus streaming service. Among the programs from its proprietary cable outlets, like TLC and Food Network, are a selection of series from some of A+E’s most popular channels.

More than any other pop star of the 2000s, Lil Wayne thrived in the chaos left behind by a rapidly changing music industry. When streaming was still a dream and physical CD sales were cratering, the New Orleans rapper consumed and re-contextualized everything from the Beatles to Beyoncé. It was an exciting time like no other, but as a result of this approach, many of his best bars, punchlines, and melodies are clearance nightmares at best and completely lost to time at worse. There are slow months for streaming services and then there are “choose a decade-old Chris Nolan movie as a header image” slow months for streaming services. Amazon Prime’s August 2020 clearly falls into the latter camp.
That’s not to say that there aren’t some interesting options arriving this month. August 1 has a few intriguing movies including Four Weddings and a Funeral, Inception, Rain Man, and even Spider-Man 3. But there aren’t many Amazon originals to speak of. Nancy Dubuc grew History Channel into a cable powerhouse, and has overseen A+E Networks’ stable of channels during the most tumultuous time in TV history. Now, she’s perhaps been given the biggest challenge of her career: Wrangling the wild culture of Vice, a company currently weathering several storms.
In particular, Vice has come under fire for creating a hostile work environment for women, which was the subject of a recent New York Times investigation. The company also recently missed its $805 million revenue target by $100 million.
As one of the most powerful women in the entertainment business, the arrival of Dubuc sends a clear message that Vice is looking to rebrand itself as an inclusive workplace. (The company has already formed a female-led advisory committee, and has promised a 50/50 male-female workforce split by 2020.)

(The company has already formed a female-led advisory committee, and has promised a 50/50 male-female workforce split by 2020.)

The 22nd Critics’ Choice Award is less than a month away. We may be enjoying the shiny new TV season, and while it may seem all fun and new, critics are all to ready to begin awarding some honors. The Broadcast Television Journalists Association have officially announced, via Entertainment Weekly, the TV nominees.
Leading the pack with six nominations is The People v. O.J. Simpson, not a huge surprise given its subject matter and solid execution. Also of note are the sheer number of nominations that HBO has under its belt this year — 22 in total. Noticeably absent are this year’s Netflix Marvel shows. Despite being great TV, it still seems like critics are unwilling to give comic book adaptations their fair shake come awards season.
Oh well. Better luck next year, I suppose? The film nominations will be announced on December 1, 2016.
