"The Girl Before" isn't a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 psychological thriller, but it hangs onto the film's elements of psychological obsession with women and repeating motifs between them. As a voice in this trailer points out, someone is "acting out the same psychodrama with new players allotted the same role." Based on the 2016 novel of the same name by J.P. Delaney, "The Girl Before" has been adapted by Delaney and newer co-writer Marissa Lestradem (writer of 2022 environmental thriller series "The Swarm") into a four-episode series for BBC One and HBO Max. The series already dropped in the U.K. in December, but will...

Manuel Alduy, a well-respected French film and TV industry veteran who joined France Televisions as head of cinema and international development in January, discussed the broadcaster’s strategy to ramp up its scope and attract younger audiences.
Alduy, who worked at Canal Plus Group for 22 years before joining Twentieth Century Fox in 2016, is making his first public keynote under this new position at France Televisions on Tuesday at Series Mania in Lille.
Alduy said France Televisions will next be launching an initiative with the European Broadcasting Union (Ebu), an alliance of public service media which regroups 100 members across the continent, including the BBC in the U.K., Ard in Germany, Dr in Denmark, Svt in Sweden, Rai in Italy, Channel One Russia and the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation, among others. Prior to the advent of the so-called “eco-vengeance” genre, Italian cinema used animals, or at least the symbolism they naturally encapsulate, in the most disparate contexts, from those coherent with their nature to more unusual and weird derivations. With regard to the singular use of animals in Italian cinema, a reference is certainly owed to Dario Argento’s first films—L’uccello dalle piume di cristallo, Il gatto a nove code, and Quattro mosche di velluto grigio—which were followed by huge commercial success that encapsulated what Argento had learnt from Alfred Hitchcock and the Nouvelle Vague, as well as from the literary heritage of Raymond Chandler, where animals appeared in the titles embodying the characters’ gestures, modus operandi, and personalities—the animal as a metaphor representing the diabolical “human” nature. Although the presence of animals in the titles is often justified, of course, by some narrative solution or gimmick,...

Photo: ‘The Swarm’/Netflix My favorite films are those where you don’t know what to expect going in and are happily surprised by the end. It’s like putting your hand in a mystery box and pulling out $100 dollars. You have no clue what you’re going to get, so when you win something good, it’s a great feeling. That’s how I felt watching ‘The Swarm’ on Netflix this past weekend. Going in, I had very little idea of what to expect. I didn’t see the trailer and had no clue what the film was about before reading the synopsis on IMDb before viewing. There wasn’t much information about this film online, and that honestly excited me a little bit. It’s been a while since there was a film where I have had no idea what to expect going in. And boy, I was not disappointed.

Home viewing competition this week was stiff. It included the HBO Max same-day premiere of “The Suicide Squad” and ongoing availability of Disney’s “Black Widow” and “Jungle Cruise” for an extra $29.99 for Disney+ subscribers. The two titles that could break through were “Pig” (Neon/$6.99) and “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain” (Focus/$19.99), both of which added VOD play after three weeks in theaters.
Many Nicolas Cage movies are genre-exercise VOD exclusives, but “Pig” stands out with excellent reviews (82 Metacritic) and his performance as a truffle hunter in search of his beloved pig received some the best reviews of his career. It placed on all three charts and as high as #2 on iTunes.
“Roadrunner,” released Friday, is #7 on iTunes. Vudu reports that though the title is just below its top 10, it was their third-highest ranked new release.
Samba TV, an app that tracks home viewing, estimates 2.8 million U.S. households saw “Squad” this weekend.

We’re deep into the dog days of summer, but Netflix’s list of new releases for August 2021 feels like fall.
That is to say that Netflix has some really good library TV titles this month that harken back to the glory days of the fall TV network calendar. August 1 sees the arrival of two of the best NBC shows of all time: Tina Fey comedy 30 Rock, and life-affirming (American) football drama Friday Night Lights. If you’ve not seen either, catch up with them both. That’s an order.

"You believe in that business?" Don't go chasing grasshoppers. Netflix has unveiled a new official trailer for their release of the French horror film The Swarm, originally known as La Nuée in French. This premiered at last year's Sitges Film Festival and it already opened in France last year, now it's arriving in the US and on Netflix later this year. To save her farm from bankruptcy, a single mother begins a business of breeding edible grasshoppers. Soon she develops a strange, obsessive relationship with them. But these aren't any old grasshoppers - they're blood thirsty locusts that love to enjoy the red liquid. Starring Suliane Brahim, Sofian Khammes, Marie Narbonne, and Raphael Romand. The strangest and scariest thing about it is her relationship with all these bugs and how she gives them a taste of her own blood. Gives me the willies. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Just Philippot's The Swarm,...
