2015 was a successful year regarding the quantity and quality of foreign productions shot in Poland. At the beginning of the year, Anne Fontaine (“Coco Before Chanel,” “Perfect Mothers”) filmed a French-Polish co-production “Agnus Dei” in Warmia, which premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival. The film features Polish and French actresses among others Lou de Laage, Agata Kulesza, Agata Buzek and Joanna Kulig.
In the spring, the crew of a Polish-German-French-Belgian co-production about the life of Maria Sklodowska-Curie (dir. Marie Noelle) spent 20 days on the set in among others Lodz, Leba and Krakow. The cast is international, and the film is made in French. The Polish Nobelist is portrayed by Karolina Gruszka (“Oxygen”).
The summer brought about increased activity of German producers. A Zdf TV show, “Ein Sommer in…” was filmed in two resort towns in the north-eastern Poland – Mikolajki and Mragowo. Ard and Tvp collaborated on the set of "Polizeiruf 110" ("Police Call 110"), which was filmed in July and August among others in a Polish border-town – Swiecko. Also in July began the shooting of a new part of detective TV series "Der Usedom-Krimi" filmed on both the Polish and German side of the Usedom island.
However, a true influx of foreign productions took place in the autumn. American-Polish thriller “Chronology” was filmed in Poznan. The cast includes William Baldwin (TV series "Gossip Girl," "Adrift in Manhattan") and Danny Trejo (“Machete,” “From Dusk till Dawn”).
The Goetz Palace in Brzesk, in Malopolska hosted filmmakers from India who for six days were shooting “Fitoor,” an Indian adaptation of Dickens's “Great Expectations.” The crew consisted of over 40 Indians and almost 80 Poles. Another crew from India – this time from the so-called Kollywood in the south of the country – spent twenty days on the set in various Polish locations (among others Zakopane, Walbrzych, Krakow, Leba). The film titled “24” features Surya, a Tamil superstar, in the main role.
The autumn months were also very intensive in Lodz with three simultaneous big film sets. Andrzej Wajda (“The Promised Land,” “Walesa. Man of Hope”) worked on his new film “Powidoki”; Opus Film, the producer of “Ida”, organized for an Israeli partner eleven-day shoot to a film set in 1970s – “Past Life,” directed by Avi Nesher; and American director Martha Coolidge (“The Prince and Me,” TV shows “Sex and the City,” “The Twilight Zone,” “Weeds”) filmed her project “Music, War and Love,” whose producer is among others Fred Roos known from such films as “Apocalypse Now,” “The Godfather” or “Lost in Translation.” The picture features Adelaide Clemens (“The Great Gatsby”), Connie Nielsen (“Gladiator”), Toby Sebastian (“Game of Thrones”) and Stellan Skarsgård (“Nymphomaniac”).
The end of the year was also very successful for Malopolska and Krakow. Two movies were filmed in the region – an American-British biography of Martin Luther commissioned by PBS with Padraic Delaney (“The Wind that Shakes the Barley,” “The Tudors”) in the main role; and a feature titled “True Crimes” starring two-time winner of a Golden Globe – Jim Carrey (“The Truman Show,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “The Mask”) as the protagonist. The crew spent 32 days on the set in Krakow. The picture was directed by Greek Alexandros Avranas (“Miss Violence”), written by Jeremy Brock (“Brideshead Revisited,” “The Last King of Scotland”), and produced by Brett Ratner (“X-Men 3: the Last Stand,” TV series “Rush Hour”). Accompanying Jim Carrey were Charlotte Gainsbourg (“Nymphomaniac,” “Antichrist”); Marton Csokas (“The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King,” “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”) and Polish actors Agata Kulesza (“Ida”) and Robert Wieckiewicz (“Walesa. Man of Hope”).
The first information about productions planned for 2016 has already been released. In January, Krakow will host the crew of French black comedy “Grand Froid,” Gérard Pautonnier's debut featuring Jean-Pierre Bacri (“The Taste of Others,” “Let It Rain”), Olivier Gourmet (“Rosetta,” “The Son”) and Arthur Dupond (“Bus Palladium”). The project won the first edition of the Krakow International Film Fund.

David Nail made a name for himself in country music with heartbreak ballads like his 2011 hit "Let It Rain," but the truth was, the singer's real life was far more painful than his lyrics. "I lived probably 10 years in a really, really deep depression," the Kennett, Mo., native, 34, tells People Country. "Growing up in a small town, it was one of those things that you don't talk about and you try to sweep it under the rug."Newly married when "Let It Rain" hit No. 1 (he wed wife Catherine in 2009), Nail appeared to be living his dream. But, he says,...

Often, an artist can feel like he’s stumbling around while making an album. Then he’ll find just the right song that brings all the pieces of the puzzle together. So it was for David Nail with “Whatever She’s Got.” The lead single from the country singer's third album, “I’m A Fire,” which came out Tuesday, soared to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Airplay chart, but Nail knew it was a winner long before it hit the top spot. “If we hadn’t had ‘Whatever She’s Got’ in our bag, we might still be searching for songs and still in the process of making that record,” he says. “When that song came into the picture, I think it gave everyone involved a bit of excitement, a bit of a kick in the butt. People said, ‘This is the song you’re been missing.’ I think...

Bizarre Trends in the Spider-Man Franchise The recent release of the first trailer for, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”, made me excited for the future, but also nostalgic for the past. I decided to go back and remember the the strange patterns, and bizarre creative decisions from the four existing Spider-Man movies. Join me as I openly mock the movies I love! I love the “Spider-Man” movies. I really do. It is an unconditional love, not affected by scenes of “emo” Peter or “stutter-like-an-idiot” Peter. Nevertheless, I realize these films are not flawless, and I have noticed a few questionable creative decisions. Go ahead and read through my list, and I promise you will be entertained! Let It Rain Upon initial viewing of, “Spider-Man”, I was proud of the filmmakers. The film ended at a funeral, but it did not conform to the hollywood standard for funerals. It was an overcast,...

It was a clear and starry sky last night at the 21st Tropfest short film festival, a far cry from last year when teeming rain forced thousands of film-goers to evacuate.
It is partly because of the tendency for it to rain in February that has prompted festival organisers to announce a change of date, with the 22nd Festival due to be held on December 8 this year.
It wasn.t the only change announced on the night, with the news Tropfest will now be held at the Centennial Parklands instead of the Domain. Festival Director John Polson made the announcement live from the Tropfest stage, much to the surprise of the 90, 000 strong crowd.

The Oscars are almost upon us, and the past few weeks have treated us to the shortlists competing in a number of categories, including Best Animated Feature, Best Visual Effects, Best Documentary, and Best Original Score.
With the nominations announcement creeping ever closer at the start of next month, the Academy have now announced a seventy-five-long list of songs that are eligible in the Best Original Song category.
The list features some absolutely stellar songs that have debuted on the big screen this year, including Adele’s impressive Bond theme, Skyfall.
Tom Hooper’s highly anticipated Les Misérables is also in the running with Suddenly, composed specifically for the film, and it should be great to see how it’s received both by audiences and the Academy in the coming weeks.

In what might be a bit of an over-correction from last year’s two-song race, The Academy has released the largest list of Oscar-eligible original songs in years, topping out at 75 tunes from the movies of the year. Naturally, the big names are there — Adele with “Skyfall” and Arcade Fire with their work on The Hunger Games — but there are also some far out choices like work featured in Death By China and Saint Dracula. With that many songs in the mix, it was bound to be an eclectic group, but even though it’ll be whittled down for the final nominee list announced January 10th, it’s nice for the time being to see “Ladies of Tampa” from Magic Mike right next to “Love Always Comes as a Surprise” from Madagascar 3. Here’s the complete list with a few examples for your listening pleasure: “For You” from Act of Valor “Metaphorical Blanket” from Any Day Now “Let It Rain...

There are 75 original songs that qualify for the Oscar this year, but really everyone has been waiting to hear about one.
Adele’s title theme to Skyfall surged to #1 on iTunes just days after debuting in October, but some feared the number by her and Paul Epworth would be ruled ineligible for the Oscar because it incorporates elements of the classic 007 theme, which of course is not original.
But the music branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided it was not a significant enough problem to boot it from the potential nominees, and included it without...

We are one step closer to a Matthew McConaughey Oscar striptease, friends, because — as hoped and prayed for — Magic Mike's "Ladies in Tampa" has been declared eligible for Best Original Song. Also on the Academy's go-list: "Skyfall," which will probably ensure a post-baby comeback performance from Adele; Rick Ross's "100 Black Coffins," from Django Unchained; the new Les Miserables song; Fiona Apple's ferocious, not-so-censor-friendly "Dull Tool," from This Is 40; and, strangely, Katy Perry's "Wide Awake." Start mailing in your thongs or coffins or whatever a dull tool is to the Academy; the Save the Best Song Performances campaign starts now.Full list: "For You" from "Act of Valor""Metaphorical Blanket" from "Any Day Now""Let It Rain" from "Being Flynn""Learn Me Right" from "Brave""Touch the Sky" from "Brave""Airport" from "Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best""Come on Girl" from "Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best...

I mentioned on today's podcast that my three nominees for Best Original Song for the 2013 Critics' Choice Awards were "100 Black Coffins" from Django Unchained, "Skyfall" from Skyfall and "Ladies of Tampa" from Magic Mike. Of my nominees only "Skyfall" made the official list of nominees, but hopefully the Academy will right a couple of wrongs as both "100 Black Coffins" and Matthew McConaughey's "Ladies of Tampa" are among the 75 songs listed as in contention for a nomination at the 2013 Oscars. The Academy just released the following list of which all voting members of the Music Branch will receive a Reminder List of works submitted in the category and a DVD copy of the song clips. Members will be asked to watch the clips and then vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements in the category. The five achievements receiving the highest number of votes...

Seventy-five songs are officially in contention for nominations in the Original Song category for the 85th Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today. Adele's theme from "Skyfall" was among them, despite some suggestion it would be disqualifed for its significant use of John Barry's old Bond score. It joins 74 other songs from a very eclectic mix of artists including Arcade Fire, Fiona Apple, Florence and the Machine, Dolly Parton, Rick Ross, Paul Williams, Owl City, John Legend, Katy Perry and Karen O. The original songs, along with the motion picture in which each song is featured, are listed below in alphabetical order by film and song title: "For You" from "Act of Valor" "Metaphorical Blanket" from "Any Day Now" "Let It Rain" from...

Viggo Mortensen: fictionalized William S. Burroughs, On the Road On The Road: Box-Office/Oscar Chances Pt.1 Could Walter Salles‘ On the Road buck the IFC Films box-office and awards-season trend? Theoretically, it could. When it comes to North American audiences, Kristen Stewart (who has Snow White and the Huntsman and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 coming out) and Tron: Legacy‘s Garrett Hedlund (to be seen in Joel Coen and Ethan Coen’s Inside Llewyn Davis) have larger followings than IFC Films stars like, say, Juliette Binoche, Mathieu Amalric, Patricia Clarkson, Catherine Deneuve, Anamaria Marinca, Stockard Channing, Benicio Del Toro, or Diego Luna. As a plus, the Jack Kerouac / Walter Salles / Kristen Stewart / Garrett Hedlund combo will likely prove irresistible to more than a few moviegoers. (Not to mention supporting performances by Spider-Man‘s Kirsten Dunst, The Lord of the Rings movies’ Viggo Mortensen, and the upcoming...

Kristen Stewart dancing, On the Road On the Road, Walter Salles‘ film adaptation of Jack Kerouac‘s novel, has finally found a U.S. distributor. AMC Networks, which owns IFC Films and Sundance Selects, has purchased the North American distribution rights to the Palme d’Or contender starring Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, and Kristen Stewart. As per Variety, the On the Road price tag was "in the low seven figures." The Variety report also states that "multiple people who have seen the film agreed that it contains awards-caliber performances and cinematography, but add that its two-hours-plus length and nebulous narrative will make it a challenge to market to mainstream [audiences]." In addition to Kristen Stewart, best known for the Twilight movies, Tron: Legacy‘s Garrett Hedlund, and Control‘s Sam Riley, On the Road features Spider-Man‘s Kirsten Dunst, Man of Steel’s Amy Adams, A Dangerous Method’s Viggo Mortensen...

The last time filmmaker Paul Weitz and indie-folk musician Damon Gough (a.k.a. Badly Drawn Boy) teamed up, it was on 2002's adaptation of Nick Hornby's "About a Boy." Ten years on, it's still considered by many of Gough's fans to be some of his finest work.
Now, the dynamic duo of movies about guys with parenthood issues is reuniting for another literary adaptation, "Being Flynn," Weitz's take on author Nick Flynn's memoir "Another Bulls**t Night in Suck City." Can jangly, emotionally compelling lightning strike twice?
The answer is yes, but only to a limited degree. To be certain, Badly Drawn Boy can turn out a heartfelt ballad. The opener, "I'll Keep the Things You Throw Away," is Beatles-esque, and its plaintive violins make for excellent romantic-playlist material. "The Smile Behind Your Face" has a certain funk to it, propelled as it is by a prominent...

Ke$$ha has scored her first UK singles chart number one with latest track 'We R Who We R'. The 22-year-old star, who previously reached a chart high of four with her 2009 debut 'Tik Tok', zoomed to pole position after selling over 90,000 copies of her fifth release as a main artist. The song peaked at 95 in previous weeks based on downloads alone. Meanwhile, two new entries grace the upper section of the chart this week, Chase & Status's 'Blind Faith' at five and 'Yeah 3x', the twelfth UK top 40 hit from R&B singer Chris Brown, at ten. Elsewhere, positions 11-20 display risers aplenty, the most notable of which are Tinchy Stryder's 'Let It Rain', which is up 11 places from 25, album chart champion Adele and her 2008 ballad 'Make You Feel My Love', up four to 15, while Taio Cruz and Kylie Minogue's (more)...

Rating (out of 5): ***½
We look to the films of Agnès Jaoui -- The Taste of Others, Look at Me, and now Let It Rain (Parlez-moi de la pluie) -- for a kind of confirmation: the suggestion that life, however harried and bizarre, is full of marvelous little things, moments sad or sweet and often funny that quietly resonate. There are plenty of these moments in the writer/director/actress' new film. The husband in bed at the end of the day, feeling abandoned because his wife is reading; the French-Algerian young man who has decided to make a documentary and now must endure round-after-round of eyebrow-raising from the "French"; there's even a scene of characters getting high on pot that manages, against all odds, to break new ground.

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
Gulliver’s Travels – Jack Black, Emily Blunt, Jason Segel
Little Fockers – Ben Stiller, Teri Polo, Robert De Niro
True Grit – Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Hailee Steinfeld
Movie of the Week
True Grit
The Stars: Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Hailee Steinfeld
The Plot: A tough U.S. Marshal helps a stubborn young woman track down her father’s murderer.
The Buzz: This one’s an easy pick for “Movie of the Week,” as for me, Jack Black has worn out his welcome, and any film I’ve ever seen with the word “Focker” in the title was absolutely horrid. Though the Coen Brothers have been hit-and-miss in the last decade, with amazing highs (No Country For Old Men, O Brother, Where Art Thou?) and abysmal lows (Burn After Reading, Intolerable Cruelty), this film, a modern day rehash of the old John Wayne vehicle, looks quite good.

Much has been made of the way that comedy doesn’t travel well across national borders, as so much of it is based in the familiarity of local customs. But if Let It Rain is any indication, what separates us is not so much the truth at the heart of jokes but the manner in which they are presented. Here, France seems to have its social structure set up in much the same way that ours is, with the greatest divide being between the rich and the poor, and with those not benefitted by it completely unable to work together to do anything about it. But whereas an American version might seem harsh and patronizing, the French notion of satire is more absurd, with all of its characters gently mocked while still generally being able to save face.

Stargate Universe is a bizarrely controversial show, and if you need proof, just take a look at my initial review of the show. Somewhere in the realm of “mildly positive, but hopeful,” the review doesn’t exactly oversell the show, but there are few comments that aren’t from “Stargate Purisits” taking shots at the changes in format and tone. Not that there aren’t plenty of reasons to avoid the show without Stargate baggage, but Sci-Fi is a genre of fans who throw themselves into things, and are often rather easy to annoy.
While some of my initial concerns were dealt with as the show continued, there are many ways in which this incarnation of Stargate still hasn’t, in my estimation, gotten out of its own way. I am the wrong guy to try to sell cheap, simplistic melodrama to, especially when it is slapped into a show...

Let It Rain is a modern day comedy/drama set in the south of France. It took me a few minutes to figure out the connections between some of the main characters. I was able to get my bearings not too long into the film. A voice over narrator would have been extremely helpful a la Woody Allen in many of his films.
The story begins with Karim and Michel deciding to collaborate on a documentary about a successful woman. Karim is a former filmmaking student of Michele.s who works the front desk of a small local hotel to provide for his new bride, Severine, while trying to get a break in film. His partner, Michel is the source of much of the humor in the film. He bumbles through their plans and tries to exude an air of intellectual superiority when he has no idea about what is happening.

The very talented co-writer/director/star Agnes Jaoui collaborates again with co-writer/star/husband Jean-Pierre Bacri in a piece that will feel a bit too slight and inconsequential for some audiences (even Francophiles) but that features enough quality performances in pursuit of true character development that it merits a recommendation for those who still believe fictional film can capture genuine human behavior. Let It Rain (Parlez-moi de la pluie)
Directed by: Agnes Jaoui
Cast: Jean-Pierre Bacri, Jamel Debouzze, Agnes Jaoui, Pascale Arbillot
Running Time: 2 hrs
Rating: R
Release Date: July 2, 2010
Plot: An upcoming politician (Jaoui) is asked to be interviewed by the man (Bacri) her sister is having an affair with.
Who’S It For?: Fans of dialogue-driven comedies, with this one being in the vein of something that a less-morbid Woody Allen might write.
Overall
Sometimes, real life is funny enough. Let It Rain is a charming comedy with honest folk encountering situations that must be stolen from the scripts of our own lives – there’s a hint of romance between two hotel employees, a disagreement on “relationship titles” between an upcoming politician and her boyfriend, and a story of cheating that includes a loving mother and a bumbling documentary filmmaker. All of these characters have their own stories,...

Bollywood movie Raavan led all limited releases in its opening weekend, making this the third time in the last five weekends that a Bollywood movie has topped the list. Please Give, Solitary Man and Winter's Bone had noteworthy expansions, while Cyrus impressed in a very limited debut. Raavan opened to $480,703 at 119 locations, ranking 15th among all releases this weekend. While this would seem to further the notion that Bollywood movies are becoming more and more popular, Raavan does represent a tiny step backwards as the last two releases, Kites and Raajneeti, got off to much stronger starts ($958,673 and $850,255, respectively). It's also worth noting that Raavan has little chance of even crossing the $1 million mark, as Bollywood movies typically make more than 50 percent of their total grosses on their first weekend. Please Give finished just below Raavan, grossing $475,334 at 272 locations (up from 103 last weekend). Through its eighth weekend, the comedy-drama has collected $2.66 million.

Wow. Four films worth talking about, all opening in the same week, and I've got interviews for all of them. I'm also pretty strung out to begin with, so I'm not going to attempt to get them all in within a single show, or even a couple of shows. Instead, we'll start off with two comedies that are somewhat interrelated because they both break the mold in their own ways. Then, next week, we'll be back with one episode looking at a fantastic documentary about the event that gave birth to the gay rights movement, and another episode about a beautiful and riveting drama from Italy starring Tilda Swinton. (Yeah, I could tell you titles, but, hell, listen to the show -- they're mentioned at the end). This week, we've got Agnès Jaoui discussing Let It Rain, her film about a...

The Americanized title of Agnès Jaoui’s Parlez-moi De La Pluie doesn’t match up with a literal translation—“talk to me of the rain”—but marketers can’t be blamed for trying to infuse a hint of action into a movie that boils down to a series of tart conversations. Jaoui and her husband Jean-Pierre Bacri (with whom she traditionally co-writes and co-stars), specialize in barbed comedies of haute bourgeois manners; they wrote Smoking/No Smoking and Same Old Song for Alain Resnais before stepping out on their own with 2000’s The Taste Of Others.
