Ninjas have never been out of vogue but between last year’s Turtles animated feature “Mutant Mayhem” and the recently-released Netflix series “House of Ninjas,” it’s fair to say they’re having a moment.
Not that your average “Ninjago” fan (average age 6-8) would care about whether or not ninjas are in vogue. Since launching simultaneously as a show and product 13 years ago, the Lego-originated IP has spawned 16 seasons, 235 episodes, a 2017 feature film starring Jackie Chan, theme park attractions and, of course, plenty of toys.
In 2023 “Ninjago” was semi-rebooted under a fresh title “Ninjago: Dragons Rising,” which introduced new characters and story arcs. In part the change came about because the “Ninjago” universe was so vast there was no easy access point for a new generation of kids. “There’s so much material, it’s our longest running show,” says Asa Tait, head of production at Lego’s...

Despite “Barbie’s” recent box office domination, the history of toy-to-film franchises has not always been easy. Often dismissed as a cash grab (“Battleship”) or popcorn fare, turning toys into critically and commercially successful content is no skate in the park.
For Mattel and co, there was another toy that had to walk before “Barbie” could fly: Lego. Written and directed by Lord and Miller, “The Lego Movie” proved that movies based on toys could be so much more than a 90-minute commercial when it was released ten years ago. Although snubbed at the Oscars (not even garnering a nomination for best animated film), the Warner Bros. pic — like its eventual successor “Barbie” — was a hit with both audiences and critics.
Buoyed by “The Lego Movie’s” success, a string of spin-offs and sequels quickly followed – “The Lego Batman Movie” and “The Lego Ninjago Movie” in 2017 and “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part...

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai
I have never seen the Gremlins movie, but I know that gremlins smell bad and want to eat us. Just watching five minutes of Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, I think it is already a really good TV show.
The show is 25 percent happy, 25 percent sad, 25 percent funny, and 25 percent disgusting. The disgusting parts are when fingers come off. It’s about a kid, Sam (Izaac Wang), who says, “I have no faith in myself. I can’t do it.” He has to hide this gremlin named Gizmo, who is so cute, and return it to its home. He finds this girl, Elle (Gabrielle Nevaeh Green), and they go on a big adventure to find its home. He’s kind of like a goody-two-shoes and the...

"Star Trek: Prodigy," which just wrapped its first season on Paramount+, takes place in a distant corner of the "Stat Trek" universe that hasn't yet been explored by the Federation. A group of teenagers, fleeing the man who has enslaved them in a mine, discover a derelict Starfleet vessel called the U.S.S. Protostar. On board, they are instructed by a hologram of Capt. Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) on how to operate the ship, but also how to work together as a Starfleet crew might. “Star Trek: Prodigy,” the latest addition to the expanding universe of “Trek” series on Paramount Plus, is adding sci-fi heavyweights John Noble (“Fringe”) and Jimmi Simpson (“Westworld”) to its series regular cast, the streamer announced on Thursday.

San Diego Comic-Con 2021, the second Comic-Con@Home edition of the beloved pop culture event, kicks off its three-day run Friday.
The free online event, which runs through Sunday, isn't anywhere near as packed with panels as the famed in-person Sdcc usually is, but a decent number of studios and networks will still be hosting Q&As and digital screenings for their TV shows and movies.
As TheWrap reported exclusively earliest this month, HBO (which did present at the 2020 event) will be skipping this year's online con, but its sibling streaming service HBO Max is presenting a virtual event for the show, "gen:lock."
Other notable absentees from the second (and hopefully last) pandemic-forced virtual San Diego Comic-Con include Marvel Studios and DC Films, both of which did not attend the first Comic-Con@Home last year.

The end of 2020 and the start of 2021 have featured a diverse and dynamic collection of cinema-related books. Let’s start with two of these, a biography of director Mike Nichols and an oral history of Dazed and Confused, which qualify as movie-lover must-owns.
Mike Nichols: A Life by Mark Harris (Penguin Press)

I tend to doubt it, as Mark Harris’ study of the career of the Berlin-born, Nichols-and-May comic genius turned Broadway and Hollywood heavyweight rivals the author’s previous modern classics: Pictures at a Revolution: Five Movies and the Birth of the New Hollywood and Five Came Back: A Story of Hollywood and the Second World War. Nichols was the subject of a fine oral history in 2019 (covered here), but A Life adds extraordinary levels of detail. There are moments that are simply unforgettable. These...

Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” may be an ensemble drama at heart, but it does feature one inarguable breakout performance by its young star: Alan S. Kim.
The 7-year-old firecracker won over crowds in Park City in January at the film’s Sundance premiere with his portrayal of David, the youngest son of actor Steven Yeun’s character and his on-screen mom, Yeri Han.
Uprooted to a remote plot of farmland in Arkansas, David must play in empty fields under the watchful eye of his sister, Anne (Noel Cho), as his parents attempt to build a business and understand life in the Bible Belt. Fluent in English and Korean, David becomes a vessel for his father’s Korean pride and his American ambitions. He’s also ridiculously cute.

The family of late actor Kirby Morrow, known for his voice roles on “Dragon Ball Z,” Lego’s “Ninjago” and many more series, is raising money to start a scholarship in his honor.
Morrow died in late November at 47 years old, and his brother Casey Morrow and the Calgary Foundation in Alberta, Canada, started a GoFundMe to help launch the Kirby Morrow Memorial Scholarship Fund.
“Kirby loved helping people, especially new performers learn and get started in the industry, so our family decided to create a memorial scholarship in his name,” Casey told Variety.
Created on Friday, the fundraiser has a goal of $50,000 to help people pursuing an education in the performing arts.
“Our goal is to create a lasting legacy in his name, and maybe some day it will help another Kirby from some small town realize their dreams,” the GoFundMe post reads.

Captain Janeway back.
Kate Mulgrew is set to reprise her iconic Star Trek: Voyager role in Nickelodeon’s forthcoming CG-animated spinpff Star Trek: Prodigy.
The news dropped Thursday via a virtual panel at New York Comic Con.
The series will follow a group of lawless teens as they search the universe for adventure, meaning, and salvation aboard a derelict Starfleet ship they discover and crew.
Yep, the series will be aimed at the younger generation, so the home on Nickelodeon makes sense.
“When [exec producer] Alex Kurtzman called me over a year ago to propose this idea I have to tell you at first I was a little bit uncertain,” Mulgrew said during the Nycc panel.
“After all I have played her for seven years in four-and-a-half-inch heels. I have invested every scintilla of my being in that woman. And I thought, ‘An animated version of Janeway? I don’t know.’ But...

Kate Mulgrew is returning to the Star Trek universe. The actress who played Captain Kathryn Janeway for seven seasons from 1995 to 2001 on Star Trek: Voyager has been cast as the lead in Nickelodeon’s upcoming Star Trek: Prodigy series, an animated show that hopes to bring more kids into the world of Trek.
“I have invested every scintilla of my being in Captain Janeway, and I can’t wait to endow her with nuance that I never did before in Star Trek: Prodigy,” said Mulgrew during today’s “Star Trek Universe” panel at virtual Nycc. “How thrilling to be able to introduce to these young minds an idea that has elevated the world for decades. To be at the helm again is going to be deeply gratifying in a new way for me.”

Mark Rogers shoots film and television stills and key art in Australia and internationally. Here he shines some light on what he calls the best and the worst job on set, and outlines how lower budget films can maximise resources to ensure the best quality images.
The key challenge for a stills photographer is to shoot iconic images that capture the essence and emotion of a film. Other than the trailer, this is the only way the film can be marketed and communicated to audiences. These images are the first impression the public will have of a movie, and a hero still or poster can often be the most lasting image associated with it over time.

Tell a “Star Trek” fan even five years ago that in 2020 there’d be six new series in production simultaneously and they’d have thought you’d overdosed on cordrazine. The latest, announced earlier today at the franchise’s presentation at San Diego Comic-Con@Home, is “Star Trek: Prodigy,” a CG-animated series. The show will “follow a group of lawless teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship and use it to search for adventure, meaning and salvation.”
“Star Trek: Prodigy” is being developed by Kevin and Dan Hageman of “Trollhunters” and “Ninjago” fame, under the purview of current franchise architect Alex Kurtzman, and is targeted for a 2021 launch on Nickelodeon. The actual animation will be done by a newly created branch of CBS Television, CBS’ Eye Animation Productions.

The power and importance of diversity and representation was the common theme to emerge from the Star Trek Universe panel on Thursday for the virtual fan convention Comic-Con@Home. While the nearly 80-minute super-panel was light on actual news, the casts of the CBS All Access series “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Star Trek: Picard” used the opportunity to drive home how the “Star Trek” theme of infinite diversity in infinite combinations is as relevant in 2020 as it was when Gene Roddenberry’s show first premiered in 1966. To that end, the panel promoted the NAACP’s Legal Defense and Educational Fund, to which CBS All Access made a donation.
Meanwhile, the cast and creator of the new animated comedy series “Star Trek: Lower Decks” introduced their irreverent characters for the first time, as well as debuting a first look at the show.

We’ve known for a while that Nickelodeon and CBS are teaming up to make a Star Trek TV show geared at making the universe accessible to younger kids, but we previously had very little idea of what the show might actually be about or like. While there’s still so much we don’t know about the specifics of this show, at today’s “Star Trek Universe” Sdcc at Home event and as part of a larger press release, executive producer Heather Kadin did give us two important updates: a series name and a show synopsis.
The CG-animated Trek series will be called Star Trek: Prodigy and, according to the official press release it “follows a group of lawless teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship and use it to search for adventure, meaning and salvation.” Um, this sounds great! Tubi will pack another show from new parent Fox Corp. — the first season of competition show “Lego Masters” — into its free-streaming service later this year, along with a passel of licensed kids’ programming, including content from Lego’s Ninjago franchise, Mattel and cartoon classic “Garfield.” It also will bow a Spanish-language version of the service in the U.S. later in 2020.
And Tubi says it is addressing one of the biggest complaints about free, ad-supported video services among viewers and marketers alike: The company is developing a tool that will let advertisers cap the frequency of their spots on Tubi, regardless of source.
Tubi made the announcements at its first presentation in the Digital Content NewFronts, the Iab-managed marketing pitch-fest that’s happening this year online.

Xbox One owners are going to be spoiled for choice with free games this weekend, it seems.
Alongside the usual range of titles being given away as part of Microsoft’s long-running Games With Gold promotion, a number of third-party publishers are throwing their hat into the ring, so to speak, in an effort to win your attention. As reported earlier today, industry giant Bethesda has kicked things off by making Fallout 76 free to play until next week, promising a near-endless gameplay experience, but post-apocalyptic RPGs aren’t for everyone.
Fortunately, Warner Bros. has just made its own contribution in the name of priceless entertainment by making what’s usually a $50 adventure cost absolutely nothing. This time, it’s The Lego Ninjago Movie Video Game that’s being discounted by 100%, and if you’ve any intention of picking it up, it’s worth acting sooner rather than later. As of writing,...

You can look at the ‘Lego’ film franchise one of two ways — either it’s an IP that’s on the decline after less-than-stellar box office results for its ‘Ninjago’ and ‘Lego Movie 2’ films, or it’s one of the few franchises that still is able to attract children and adults and has unlimited possibilities. If you’re Universal, apparently the focus is on the latter argument.

So far this month, we have seen two smaller releases — “Hustlers” and “Downton Abbey” — carve out a niche for themselves among the moviegoing populace and show signs of legging out into October despite next month’s crowded slate. This weekend, Universal will try to make it three with the DreamWorks/Pearl animated film “Abominable.”
With “Joker” expected to challenge for the biggest October opening ever next week, all other studios are steering clear of putting out a wide release this weekend. But an animated film for families isn’t going to be competing for its key demographic with an R-rated take on a comic book villain. And since the $75 million film is co-financed with Pearl Studio — who is handling Chinese distribution — the threshold to profit for Universal is lower.
