Always wondered what Plom looked like without make-up...
In 1971 Cor Witschge and Marijke Bakker were replaced as Pipo & Mammaloe by Cees van Ooyen and Janine van Wely for the serial "Pipo Op Bizarra" because the original actors wanted to get paid for every piece of merchandising that featured their portrait. Both parties ended up empty handed: the actors lost their case and the replacements were unsuccessful in recreating the Pipo magic on television. So, Witschge and Bakker returned in the next story "Pipo Op Marobia" and writer Wim Meuldijk invented a brand new character for Janine van Wely to play: Pipo's sister Plom. None of the serials from before 1975 have ever been released on video or DVD, meaning the first one to feature Plom in a supporting role that is available to watch is 1976's "Pipo En De Lachplaneet". She does looks a bit different here: Instead of full clowns makeup, she only has a little sun on her cheek, a sort of family birthmark she shares with her big brother. Also she doesn't have her bright red hair yet, it's a lot darker and curlier. In fact, her hairstyle seems to change over the course of the series, most notably during the first episode.
Stuck between two serials that were filmed on location (in Amsterdam and Aruba, respectively), "De Lachplaneet" is completely studio bound, with only one exterior shot filmed in the Television center of Hilversum. However, for Pipo this might well be his strangest and farthest journey ever, as he and his sister inadvertently blasts off into outer space aboard a chicken-shaped rocket build by mechanic and gas station owner Ben Ziene (Henk Votel sans the old age make-up he wore as Opa in Ti-Ta Tovenaar). Poor old Mammaloe is stuck on Earth and deprived of taking part in the adventure as usual. They end up on the Laughter planet, where all the giggles, chuckles and howls from Earth end up and sprout into beautiful flowers (well, where else did you think all the laughter ended up, the Fart Zone?). Unfortunately the flower children of the Laughter planet (including Teuntje from Ome Willem as Pretje) are being terrorized by a giant bug named Dikta Tor (Meuldijk sure loved punny names). His henchmen Grim & Hoon come out twice a day (whenever it gets dark) to steal all the flowers. So it is up to Pipo and Ben to save the planet and find some replacement fuel to power up the Pollo 1 rocket and get home.
Since Meuldijk was only alloted four episodes to tell the tale, everything is resolved rather easily and conveniently. His characters and situations are quite clever but never as much fun as those from fellow children's TV writers such as Harrie Geelen and Lo Hartog van Banda. Janine van Wely does bring a lot of enthusiasm to the part of Plom and it's fun to see her towering over her male co-stars in her platform shoes and flowery dress. There are rumors of new Pipo adventures planned for 2009, both on screen and in the theater, so here's hoping they'll include Plom. That is to say if they find someone worthy to fill those platforms. Otherwize they should just wave the entire idea goodbye. Koekeloeriekoe!
