Could have been a sleaze classic, however it's not.
poolandrews2 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Dying God is set in some unnamed city where hooker Lisa Douglas is found brutally raped & murdered, her uterus found blown open from the inside. Corrupt cop Sean Fallon (James Horan) is put on the case, as the dead bodies of hookers continue to pile up Fallon believes something odd is going on & that he may not be dealing with a human adversary but instead an ancient Amazonian creature with a huge retractable penis that is trying to mate because it has cancer. Fallon teams up with pimp Chance (Lance Henriksen) who has lost several hookers to the creature, together they must face it & put a stop to it's vicious killing & raping spree...

This French Argentinian co-production was co-written, co-produced & directed by Fabrice Lambot & if you read my brief synopsis about a ancient creature with a huge penis running around raping & murdering prostitutes because when it cums it's sperm bursts through it's victims uterus wall you would be forgiven for thinking that Dying God might be some sort of gory sleaze classic. Unfortunately it's hard to imagine that a film about a creature that goes around raping & killing prostitutes could be so dull & uneventful. I suppose the main problem with Dying God is that the raping & killing monster part of the story is reduced to nothing more than a subplot, all the rapes & murders happen off screen & are largely implied (the pathologist saying things like 'she was brutally raped' to Fallon after the event) & the main focus of Dying God seems to be some sort of character study of corrupt cop Fallon & in this sense it actually felt like Bad Lieutenant (1992) at times. We see scenes of Fallon accepting sex from hookers & cheating on his girlfriend, murdering people in his way, using his authority as a cop to push people around & steal money, he steals guns & sells them, generally swears a lot & is in league with most of the local pimps. The final twenty odd minutes picks up a bit as Fallon & Chance in his harpoon armed wheelchair face off against the monster with Fallon fighting it with a circular saw (which just happened to be lying around) but for the majority of the duration of Dying God it's a largely dull affair populated by very unlikable character's who I found it impossible to feel any kind of sympathy for, hell I was rooting for the monster at the end. How can a film about a rapist creature be so dull? I still can't quite figure it out.

The film looks weird, the location is never named but it feels like it is meant to be a city in the US but it doesn't feel like one. It's interesting to note that the IMDb lists a 'Translator' in the 'Writing Credits' section for Dying God which one would imagine means there were communication problems during filming. Most of the names in the credits are unpronounceable for me. There's some decent gore, an exploding head, a head gorily bashed against a wall, some ripped out guts, a gory birth scene, lots of dead bodies with holes in their stomachs, some guts splattered around & a bit of blood splatter. There's some nudity too although not as much as you would expect & as I have already mentioned the rapes happen off screen. The film has that annoying shaky hand-held camcorder feel to it which I just hate. The monster when seen at the end looks alright, it's green & humanoid in shape & yes we do get to see it's huge retractable penis if that sort of thing turns you on. The creatures origins & why it exists are never really gone into other than some vague explanation about it being some ancient Amazonian God.

With a supposed budget of about $500,000 Dying God has reasonable production values but looks cheap like a lot of low budget horror does, at least the special effects are alright & thankfully there's no CGI computer effects. Filmed on location in Buenos Aires in Argentina which probably caused problems since the film was shot in English. Genre favourite & the always watchable Lance Henriksen has a part in this as a wheelchair bound pimp, he probably only agreed to do it for a free holiday to Buenos Aires or at least that's what I hope since he is definitely better than this.

Dying God had an outrageously sleazy plot about a rapist monster but the film never really satisfies in that department & to much time is given to dull character study, it's like some dull cross between Bad Lieutenant & Breeders (1986).

softcore porno, with a killer monster plot and a couple of real actors
hexrei7 July 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I think if I had come into this knowing it was basically a porn studio, with porn actors, and porno cinematography creating this film, I might have passed itup. I saw Henricksen and Moran in the cast and somehow I imagined that Misty Mundae must have made the leap to real movies after The Rage and her Masters of Horror episode.

Nope. This movie features plenty of softcore scenes, nudity at every possible opportunity. They obviously had a lot of porn props and actors because there are stank hos dildos and cheesy bondage leather all over the place. To be honest I like porn and naked people but it doesn't add anything to the plot, and I've never liked porno that tries to have a plot, so they get a big fail from me. I think perhaps they thought all the sex would add to the "dark and decadent" aspect of the film but it just seems forced.

The high point of the film is the wheel-chair mounted concealable harpoon gun, that was truly original. Also the titties were good. The monster suit looks like it was recycled from a late 90's sci-fi series, and although it apparently rapes its victims to death and has a giant penis in the one illustration we see, no such deadly phallus is ever seen on the monster. Obviously even monsters like to exaggerate the size of their member.

Overall, Henriksen must have been hardup for cash because this is a new low even for him. Only see this if you are trapped in a porn store or something, cause that's probably going to be this film's primary outlet.

Good Concept Film, not much else
in198425 July 2008
The monster idea was the best part of the film and what made it watchable.

The film has an interesting idea, but that's pretty much where it ends. The acting and oddity of listening to to a mix of English and French accented English in a South American industrial city is a bit too much. Sort of like watching it filmed in a French Canadian province for a story that's supposed to take place in Brazil. The lack of fit gave it that b-movie/TV quality despite a good soundtrack and believable FX.

The director and caster get responsibility for it. The stereotypical dirty cop, hookers, relationships, cigarettes, and drugs just didn't fit. It all seemed forced. Too many easy fixes that irritated me and took my focus away from the story.

Nice Concept, Needed Better Production
gavin69428 October 2013
In a dark and decadent city, corrupt cop Sean Fallon will have to face his own demons to put an end to a series of brutal rapes and murders of the most weirdest kind. With the help of the local pimps, Fallon will go on the hunt for a serial killer...

We have B-movie celebrity Misty Mundae as Mary and genre favorite Lance Henriksen as a wheelchair-bound jerk. And that is about it.

Honestly, I felt like there was something to like about this. Dirty cops, a serial killer and prostitutes... that already makes a good story. The acting was good, as was the location scouting. But for some reason the production value just seemed bad, with the cameras coming across as cheap. And that brought it all down for me...

Poorly acted, cliché ridden worthless rubbish.
Good-Will6 July 2008
If you started off with the premise that you could make one of the worst films ever whilst talking to a group of ten year old school kids, and then wrote a script together with them that contained no original dialogue, a plot that was predictable in every way possible and then cast a bunch of incompetent actors (Even Henriksen is bad in this one!), mix it together with an absurd blend of clichés and some bare breasts, then this is what you would probably end up with.

Some films are so bad that they're good fun. The trash aesthetic and all that, but this one is just trash. Rubbish. Truly and utterly awful.

The only thing that kept me watching was the vague hope that it couldn't get any worse. But at least it didn't disappoint in that respect.

The score was good. And there you have the one and only redeeming factor for this execrably bad, fetid piece of tripe.

Cheers, Will

Actors Slumming it from the Writer's Strike
Carrigon6 July 2008
Warning: Spoilers
That's all I can think of as to why this movie is so horribly bad. The cast isn't the problem, it's the script and direction and the bargain basement production values.

The movie looks like someone took a camcorder and decided to attempt to make a movie, but it just doesn't work. And the story is all disjointed and it doesn't work, as well.

The basic plot centers around a corrupt cop who is trying to work a case that involves someone raping and killing women with a......massive member. It's not an original story. This was done years before in a movie called Incubus. That aside, it could have been a workable story if the production team knew how to actually make a movie.

I only watched this for the cast. How you can have Lance Henriksen, James Horan, and Misty Mundae in a movie and mess it all up is beyond me, but they managed to do it.

Don't bother with this low budget piece of junk. Rent an old Lance Henriksen or Misty Mundae movie, you'll enjoy that a lot more.

A chore to sit through.
HumanoidOfFlesh24 October 2008
Buenos Aires.A horny monster is raping hookers to death with his huge penis tearing their uteruses.A beast called the 'Kurupi' is desperately trying to find a suitable baby-maker in order to sustain its species. It's time for tough cop Sean Fallon to stop the creature...The premise of "Dying God" sounds spectacularly sleazy, unfortunately most of the rapes and violence takes place off-screen.Even the amount of nudity is minimal.Lance Henriksen and Misty Mundae are both wasted in this boring piece of garbage.Adimittedly the climatic battle between Fallon and the beast is hilarious and quite gory.Watch Japanese outrageous "Guts of a Virgin" instead-similar premise, awesome result.3 out of 10.

One of the worst movies ever made
psycrology845 July 2008
I don't know were to begin, as everything with this movies is so terribly wrong. For starters, it is shot with a hand-held digital camera - which makes for a feeling of crappyness. It's not pleasant to look at all. The acting, direction, soundtrack, plot, script; every god damned thing about this production is flawed. And I can't believe that someone put money in it, or that a company decided to distribute the shitness. Sure, even low budget movies can be entertaining or even great, but if that is to be a reality, you will need a director that actually can direct and actors that actually can act. And a plot that seems fairly thoroughly made. This movie has neither.

Some low budget movies are intentionally bad, and therefore creates a entertaining value of it's own. But here there's not irony or self distance to be found... This movie is nothing but embarrassing and every single person that was affiliated with the production, should be banned from the movie industry.

It's got awful in spades
Heislegend9 July 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I won't go so far as to call this movie "the worst I've ever seen" (as is so common on IMDb)...mostly because if you can point to one movie as the worst ever you clearly haven't watched enough crap. But yeah...this is just plain horrible. Where to start? First of all, it's kind of sad to watch Lance Henriksen fall lower and lower. He's gone from "that one guy in Alien" to stuff like this shot-on-video affair. Second of all, even if you're on a limited budget (which this obviously was), trying hiring a lead actor that does not have the looks and acting abilities of a bit part daytime soap player. That part may even go double for not hiring a soft-core porn "star" as a supporting role. And while I'm thinking about it, look over your script to make sure it isn't repulsively boring and trite. That may be the most important part.

The movie basically starts with us being forced to explore the life of Sean Fallon a burned out cop (or detective?) whose wife left when he couldn't knock her up. Now he pretty much gets by on booze and hookers. My, how original. Then he catches a case where someone or something is killing off hookers by (get this) raping them. Now I don't know what town you live in, but in this city if someone started offing hookers in a hilariously ironic fashion it would likely be seen more as a public service than something to form a task force about. Then again, this is explained away by mentioning two or three times that it's "election time". Sure, whatever. As luck would have it, some quasi-demon/mythological beast/lame special effect with a huge wang is killing off all the girls in an effort to mate. Ugh...is it over yet? The movie starts slow and fails to build any steam or interest and before long you may start to think about washing your mouth out with buckshot. Nearly everything is so boringly unoriginal and uninteresting that it's a wonder anyone would even consider funding this steaming pile. Henriksen is good enough, but not nearly enough to take focus off of the rest of this crap. Even the demon/whatever is a sloppy special effects nightmare that looks like it was raided from the parts bin from those old live-action "Guyver" movies. There is nothing redeemable here...nothing interesting or original. Just a tired wreck that will make you ashamed to belong to the same species as these people.

Not as bad as I expected it to be
matches8121 January 2010
First off: I have a weakness for bad movies, especially for the ones that are so bad they're funny again... also I like horror movies.

Liking bad movies and having seen tons of them, I can say with certainty: This is not the worst movie ever, not by a long shot.

The story is based on an idea that hasn't been beaten to death already, which is good. Other than that, it's not great, but it works, if you're kind enough to look the other way every now and then, and I actually found it interesting to watch. It's pretty coherent overall, too.

Sure, the actors won't get any awards for this movie, but they do a bearable job. Some of the minor roles are noticeably worse than the leads, but overall the acting is good enough to not be distracting.

The production values are those of a typical non-Hollywood B-movie: Picture quality is somewhere at the lower end, although I've seen worse, the special effects won't wow anybody and the action scenes are pretty weak overall, which hampers the finale especially.

Still, the movie surprised me in a good way. Although it's not bad enough to be funny, it's not bad enough to be a pain to watch, either. I had entertaining 80 minutes with it. Don't expect an award-winning masterpiece, get over the low production values and you should be able to enjoy it, too.

Boring Z-grade video
ultra_tippergore13 October 2008
First you must know that i love "Z-grade movies" "thrash cinema" "crap movies" and "no budget". I like movies like Violent Sh#t, Cannibal Capout, Zombie Bloosbath, Sadomaster, Ozone...you know, bottom of the barrel shot on video stuff....

Dying God is in the same category of those films. Its cheap, its looks bad, its very bad acted, the editing sucks. The problem is that this movie is very boring. Dying God tries too hard to be "serious" or something like that (the "comedy" moments are really unfunny ones). The movie is about a cop that investigates a series of killings. Its insane to talk about "plot" here. Not enough gore and skin here to save this mess. Misty Mundae is dressed all the movie, so imagine. Lance Henriksen denigrates himself by making a cameo here. 2/10

Very scary and very underrated
jacobjohntaylor122 July 2017
This a very scary movie. It has great acting. It also has a great story line. It also has great special effects. I do not know why it got 2.6 A lot of characters were not very good people I still have to give it a 9. Because it a horror movie that is very scary. It has such great acting. And such a great story line. It is so mush better then The silence of lambs. It is no 2.6. Come on. You do not want to watch this movie alone. It will scary you. And if it does not no movie will. See this movie. It is one of the best horror movies of all time. This is so mush better then Storm of century. This is a great film. See it. I do not know why people do like this movie.

Corrupt cop seeks god
isaged24 January 2013
Having just spent a mostly-happy evening watching it on my laptop, I'm forced to disagree with those who gave Final Spawn such a low rating. James Horan, as the corrupt policeman and protagonist, gave a convincing performance. Despite what one reviewer claimed. The minor players who portrayed leaders of Buenos Aires crime were adequate, and the gore was adequate, too. Sure, the plot was silly but it never lagged, and had this been a straight serial-killer detective movie instead of a horror one, it would have been a medium-fine one. So, generally I agree with Kittysafe's review.

Keeping in mind that this film was made in Argentina and reading lips as I listened, I was fascinated that most of the actors and actresses (except for the one who had been mute since childhood) spoke unaccented American English. Another reviewer referred to poor dubbing; again I beg to disagree. Nor did I find the use of hand-held cameras distracting.

My only real complaint? The poor green Dying God was so Skinny!

Not in the slightest bit interesting
hellholehorror5 October 2017
It looks like it was shot on a cheap handycam with no lighting talent whatsoever. The monster looked terrible too. The music was good and dialogue clear but otherwise totally uninspiring. Horrible acting and horrible direction. Misty Mundae was a happy bonus. What happened to Lance Henriksen? Not in the slightest bit scary or even interesting.

Woeful movie
hemroid21 August 2008
It is extremely rare that I do not finish a movie that I start but this movie was awful. I tried to hang with it but this is not just an ordinary "B" movie. If there was a home for "B" movies, this one would be left out in the cold. The acting was as pitiful as I have ever seen. The male lead forced every word he spoke. If this gentleman had any acting classes it is my guess he did not do very well. I had absolutely no feeling towards his character, a good actor brings you into his role and makes you feel his sorrow and pain. In this case the only pain I felt was in my stomach which was made much better when I turned this waste of film media off.

This is totally horrible
vampyrecowboy25 February 2009
Awful to extremes in so many ways I can't begin.

This is a script that should have never been read before page 1. No way should it have even be read beyond page 2. Then to think that somebody put a camera to film this is way beyond logic.

Horrible in such a bad fashion that it's funny.

If you want to waste your time in all aspect as well as any money you may have is a crime that yet has to be written.

It's a joke that somebody thought this is a film that could to some degree entertain and if there was a 0 on the scale, well it would certainly be awarded a big nothing.

There are tampon commercials that are much more entertaining and watchable than this.

Crude and overdone
unbrokenmetal9 April 2011
Fallon (James Horan) apparently omitted many pages in the book of "how to become a good cop", but despite his drug addiction, aggression and corruption, he manages to make progress in his investigation when a series of murders is caused by a supernatural killer. After his dark sides were portrayed excessively, the good sides appear somewhat unexpected, for example at the university when he conducts his research very politely. Lance Henriksen, confined to a wheelchair, plays a gangster with more courage than the others ("Don't think I'm gonna run from you" - good taste?), when Fallon seeks assistance from criminals rather than his colleagues.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions, they say. Certainly the movie has got a few good ideas and actors, plus great locations at Buenos Aires - but everything is somewhat crude and overdone. Too many victims end up in body-bags, while the investigation is sloppy and slow, since the cops care more about their personal dislikes. The music is deliberately monotonous, looping the same dark chords to infinity, which might give a sinister atmosphere to a thrilling story, but alas, the story of "Dying God" does not pull it off, trying to please genre fans with the occasional sick stuff instead of providing a better explanation for the nature and character of the 'god'. Besides, the poor dubbing didn't make it any better.

Dying God Delivers With Original Appeal
jmbwithcats5 July 2008
Default Fabrice Lambot's DYING GOD Dying God (2008) Dying God Delivers With Original Appeal

The MySpace official page for Fabrice Lambot's French-Argentine horror Dying God is online, and on that page is a poster for the movie. Also, Brad Krupsaw's blog for the movie is online.

The screenplay for Dying God was written by Lambot and Jean Depelley, based on a story by Nicanor Loreti and Germán Val.

The movie's cast includes James Horan, Lance Henriksen, Erin Brown (a.k.a. Misty Mundae), Agathe de la Boulaye, Enrique Liporace, Victoria Maurette (she's also in Albert Pyun's Left for Dead and his BulletFace), Ivan Espeche, Samuel Arena, and (Brad) Krupsaw.

Dying God has a surprisingly original story and though the movie starts to flail early on from the flat acting and low production costs, once Lance Henriksen shows up at around the half-way mark things start to look up.

James Horan does a fine job himself and all the girls do a great job too.

After 15 minutes, stop and turn away from the screen. Yell as loud as you can to overcome the feeling of turning off this movie due to the horrible acting and post production, but then keep watching, I don't think you'll regret it. If you like horror and have a quiet afternoon to kill this one's worth the watch.

The movie is basically about a very cool legendary monster from Panamian folklore who is about to die, desperate to find a mate to continue his species, the only caveat is most of his prospective mates don't survive the first coupling.

An intensely gory film with a cool monster that while starts out bumpy won't disappoint for a low budget horror it's a bit of fun.

This was a good movie
velvetaeroplane128 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I have an infatuation with Ms Erin DeWright, or Misty Mundae. I think that there is something about her that attracts me to her movies. Probably because they are B-Horror films, for the most part. This movie, though she's not in it as much as I wished, is an awesome movie.

I originally watched it thinking that "I'm gonna do this for Misty". I saw there was a girl tied up, and I am not into that S&M stuff. But I pushed on and started the movie. When that part came it wasn't even that bad. I think it's sick how Sean had so much power in the town.

I thought the plot was good too. But I also love the story to other movies like "Zombie Lake", "Vampire Vixens", "Mummy Raider", and Trolma films. I don't know why, but I do. I don't understand the hate for this film. I often think that people jump on the band wagon when it comes to reviews. Whether it be Movies, Music, Plays etc. Sometimes you need to just sit and try I enjoy something, you know.

Sorry, I've been swaying off topic, but I can honestly say that this movie was amazing. You don't need a big budget to be good. Not just Michael Bay films are good. And the film can have parts where it isn't as exciting, but it's still good. You don't have to be Tom Cruz for people to enjoy your acting.

My favorite part is how it picks up at the end. All the deaths in the movie are either funny or they are just kind of bad. I do think its funny at the end when Sean gets hurt, the acting when he came down to the Cop car was pretty funny.

Overall, I really think you should watch this with an open mind. Or re-watch it with one.

For connoisseurs of strong tastes and very bizarre movies
masajesrilakuma24 April 2020
This crazy movie plays between the "B" and "Z" generally stands out, not so much for its final quality and picturesque cast, but for the bizarreness of the proposal and the well-received gore effects with some nude scenes that help enrich the ensemble, basically tells us the search by a corrupt and drug-addicted police detective (James Horan) with the help of a pimp (Lance Henriksen) to hunt down an ancient Indian monster called "El Kurupi" who is on the loose in a dirty city, raping and skinning women to try to reproduce desperately after their breed disappears. I think this is a legitimate attempt to produce a monster movie "a la drive in style". The violence and gore at times might be a little more racy than usual products of the horror "B" genre but thats a bonus in this case. As the result of an interesting initiative led by enthusiasts, Dying God is a strange little indpendent horror film. An average film but also an example to follow for all those who want to build an independent hexagonal cinema...
