The awards ceremony of the 14th Taiwan International Documentary Festival (Tidf) took place on May 16. 42 nominated films in the Asian Vision Competition, International Competition, Taiwan Competition and 14 works shortlisted for the Tidf Visionary Award, an award for promoting sinophone documentaries, competed for 11 awards.
The Programme Director Wood Lin says this is his 7th time participating in Tidf's programming since 2010, and a persistent self-pursuit for incarnating the spirit of documentary through curating has made each version more challenging than imagined. He also thanks all the filmmakers at the ceremony for devoting their lives to and fully engaging in filmmaking; their works are wonderful gifts that introduce the complexity and beauty of the world to the audience in Taiwan. He then quoted this year's Outstanding Contribution Award recipient, Chang Chao-tang: “We exist, because people who remember us”, saying that Tidf also exists because all who participate, remembers it.

Remakes are the talk of the town, especially in the Disney+ Hotstar universe. On one hand, The Night Manager was a huge success, while The Trial, the remake of the CBS drama The Good Wife, did not receive much appreciation because of the unsatisfactory writing and terrible understanding of the nuances from the original show. The third show in line after these two remakes is Karmma Calling, an official adaptation of the ABC show Revenge. The Hindi remake was created by Ruchi Narain and released on January 26, 2024, on Disney+.
Karmma Calling is a seven-episode-long show that covers the life of Indrani Kothari, the matriarch who used to be a superstar in the Hindi film industry. Her life post-marriage to the rich businessman Kaushal Kothari led her to move to Alibaug and become a part of the elite group living lavishly by the seaside. Tamil star Jai is gearing up for his new upcoming web-series ‘Label’, which is a socio-political-thriller series. The show which is getting its trailer real soon has released a very theatrical new announcement poster for the show. The poster shows the ‘Thirumanam Ennum Nikkah’ actor in a black suit, similar to the one worn by lawyers as he is carrying a briefcase in his hand while extending his hand out, almost as if reaching for something, in what appears to be like a philosophical allegory for him trying to grab his future.
All the while reaching out for the thing he seeks, he is escaping as many hands from below are trying to grab him, trying to pull him down and throw him to the ground.
The trailer for the show will unveil much more, though ‘Label’ had released its teaser a while back. Poised as a psychological-socio-political-drama, the show...

Actor Jisshu Sengupta has talked about working with actress Tanuja to now her daughter Kajol and his experience of working with both of them and the uncanny similarities he found.
Jisshu said: “I played Tanuja aunty’s son in a Bengali film before I worked with Kajol in ‘The Trial’ and at both instances I was in awe of them. They are incredibly talented and brilliant actresses but they are nothing like each other. I was surprised to witness how different they are. The only similarity they share is that they’re both very spontaneous when they are in front of the camera.”
“I like to improvise my scenes depending on the sequence we’re shooting and it worked like a charm with them as they would catch on to your flow and improvise themselves. They both have this edge to them that they’ll push you to be a better actor.

Physical media buffs, it's that time of the month: The Criterion Collection has announced their releases planned for September 2023. Nicholas Roeg's Walkabout in 4K is the standout title for me, though it may be that Brett Morgan's trippy tribute to David Bowie, Moonage Daydream, also on 4K, will ring your bell. Orson Welles' The Trial should look outstanding in 4K, if that's more your taste. Or Rob Reiner's The Princess Bride, written by William Goldman, also in 4K, should look lush and beautiful, even if you've already committed every line to memory. As a Mexican-Irish person, I must shout out to La Bamba, though I wonder why it is only available on Blu-ray? It's a 4K digital restoration, so perhaps a 4K edition will be forthcoming. If you aren't set up...

In 1962 Orson Welles directed The Trial; in 1993 the music video for David Bowie’s “Jump They Say” paid tribute in a characteristically pop-art fashion; in 2022 Brett Morgen’s Moonage Daydream gave a small window into the video’s making; and in 2023 both films––by extension bits of “Jump They Say” to boot––arrive on 4K from Criterion. For Welles it’s all about the deep blacks and luminescent grain; in Morgan’s case (but also Bowie’s) it’s the wealth of archival material and DTS-hd.
Their September slate also boasts two 4K upgrades, one recent and one legacy: The Princess Bride jumps to 2,160 pixels just five years after its Blu-ray edition, while longtime favorite Walkabout ought to look flaberrgastingly sharp. Meanwhile, La Bamba arrives on Blu-ray.

Looks aren’t everything (or so our mums tell us) but when there’s a brand new Doctor in the Tardis, they become pretty important. Tradition tells us that each Doctor has their own signature style – from Tom Baker’s iconic stripey scarf to Peter Davison’s cricket-and-celery combo, and Matt Smith’s “cool” bowtie – giving us clues about what kind of Doctor they’ll be.
So what will Ncuti Gatwa’s fifteenth Doctor be like? Details are scarce so far, but his fashion-forward costumes give us plenty of interesting hints…
No More Unchanging Doctor Costume
Finally, it looks like the Doctor is going to take the occasional shower.
Past Doctors have either stuck rigidly to a single costume – like William Hartnell’s suave, Victorian-era get-up or Colin Baker’s coat of many colours – or gone for a consistent look, like David Tennant wearing the same geek-chic suit in different colours,...

Sometimes a proper gem of a movie does not get recognized the way it should, for whatever reason. In the case of Tayfun Pirselimoglu's newest film “Kerr”, it is actually baffling that the film had a very limited tour of festivals and got very little reviews from the foreign language press. Even “Kerr” being the Turkish official submission to the Oscars race seems like a left-field choice and a very large exception to the rule. We got to see it in all of its brilliance at Belgrade Fest.

Production is underway in Italy on the Italian instalment of Prime Video’s global “Citadel” spy thriller franchise, produced by the Russo Brothers, with Matilda De Angelis cast as the lead.

Sacheen Littlefeather, the Native American actor and activist who declined Marlon Brando’s Oscar, has died.
The news was announced by the Academy of Motion Pictures, who wrote on Twitter: “Sacheen Littlefeather, Native American civil rights activist who famously declined Marlon Brando’s 1973 Best Actor Academy Award, dies at 75.”
The actor and activist first announced she had been diagnosed with metastasized breast cancer in a 2021 Facebook post.
In September, at a ceremony titled “An Evening with Sacheen Littlefeather”, the activist told the crowd: “I’m crossing over soon to the spirit world. And you know, I’m not afraid to die. Because we come from a we/us/our society. We don’t come from a me/I/myself society. And we learn to give away from a very young age. When we are honoured, we give.”

The Kiev Trial. His second film of the year—and seventh since the start of the decade—Sergei Loznitsa’s latest archival documentary, The Kiev Trial, is a chronicle of the titular 1946 hearing that saw fifteen Nazi officers convicted of crimes against humanity in a ruling that would predate the Nuremberg sentences by a few months. “If The Natural History of Destruction was a symphony,” Loznitsa told me as we sat to discuss his latest halfway through the fest, “The Kiev Trial is a chamber piece.” Unveiled in Cannes just a few months ago, Natural History cartwheeled across a vast and lugubrious canvas of carpet-bombings during World War II. Where that film was sprawling, the narrative here is much more straightforward. We begin with a brief parade of post-war, rubble-littered Kiev before venturing into the courtroom, which we’ll only leave to witness the Nazis’ executions together with a crowd of 200,000 besieging Kalinin Square.

In 1973 Chol Soo Lee, a 21-year-old Korean immigrant, was wrongfully incarcerated for the murder of a Chinatown gang leader. He became a symbol for systemic injustice against Asian Americans and spurred solidarity within his community. His prison memoirs have been adapted into a book and his case inspired the 1989 drama film “True Believer.” But his life — what happened before and after he became famous for his imprisonment — was far from a Hollywood fairy tale.
In the documentary “Free Chol Soo Lee,” first-time doc directors Julie Ha and Eugene Yi use archival materials in an attempt to present their tragic hero in all three dimensions. Despite their efforts, Soo Lee feels just out of reach, but the story of his life remains as important as it is horrifying.

Sacheen Littlefeather has received an apology from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences for the abuse she endured over her 1973 Oscars speech.
The actor and activist graced the stage on Marlon Brando’s behalf after he was awarded Best Actor for his portrayal of Vito Corleone in The Godfather.
In a powerful speech, she rejected the award as part of Brando’s protest of Hollywood’s depictions of Native American people. The gesture also intended to highlight the events at Wounded Knee, South Dakota, where a massacre of Native Americans took place in 1890, and where protests were ongoing.
At the time, her remarks were met with some sounds of support, as well as boos from those who disagreed with her taking a political stand at the ceremony.

Kafkaesque tales, even those written by Kafka, tend to work better on the page than the screen. That’s made evident yet again by Joachim Back’s ambitious cinematic adaptation of Jonas Karlsson’s acclaimed existentialist novel The Room, receiving its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Retitled Corner Office (presumably to avoid confusion with Tommy Wiseau’s immortally bad cult classic), the film features a fascinating premise that unfortunately wears thin over the course of its feature-length running time. But it does provide the opportunity for Jon Hamm to demonstrate his gift for deadpan comedy.
In this film, Hamm returns to the sort of office setting that marked his breakout role in Mad Men, but this is a very different office indeed. Housed in a brutalist architectural structure that wouldn’t be out of place in Soviet Russia, it’s the...

"But I'm not guilty," said K. "there's been a mistake. How is it even possible for someone to be guilty? We're all human beings here, one like the other." "That is true" said the priest "but that is how the guilty speak" --Dialogue from Franz Kafka's "The Trial"
Terry Gilliam's 1985 film "Brazil" is frequently compared to the works of Franz Kafka. The second in Tom Laughlin’s increasingly idiosyncratic Billy Jack trilogy, this three hour sequel is a passionate if ungainly political diatribe that touches on everything from Native American rights to the My Lai massacre. Delores Taylor, Laughlin’s wife and writing partner, returns as the director of the “Freedom School”, a counterculture haven for restless young navel-gazers and ground zero for Billy’s spiritual awakening.

Swiss documentary film festival Visions du Réel has unveiled its VdR-Industry selection, which includes 27 projects in different stages of production.
The works will be invited to participate in three key forums – VdR-Pitching, VdR-Work in Progress and VdR-Rough Cut Lab – that run as part of the fest’s industry activities in Nyon from April 10-14.
Those who cannot make it to the festival will be able to participate online but organizers are focusing strongly on the in-person event.
“We can’t wait to finally welcome back project holders and industry representatives to the shores of Lake Geneva. We feel strengthened by the lessons we have learned from the digital and hybrid editions of the last two years. In fact, they have opened up new possibilities in terms of activities format and allowed us to widen the range of professionals participating in VdR–Industry,” said Madeline Robert, head of industry and artistic advisor of Visions du Réel,...

The Museum of the Moving Image is pleased to announce the complete lineup for the 11th edition of First Look, the Museum’s festival of new and innovative international cinema, which will take place in person March 16–20, 2022. The Festival introduces New York audiences to formally inventive works that seek to redefine the art form while engaging in a wide range of subjects and styles. The 2022 lineup includes both nonfiction and fiction, features and shorts, as well as forms that fall outside the boundaries of traditional theatrical distribution, from gallery presentations to live performances to artist talks. This year, the festival will premiere 38 works, including 18 features representing more than 30 countries. Artists will appear both in person and remotely.
“Now in its 11th year, First Look has evolved into an event reflective of both the current state of the cinematic arts and MoMI’s curatorial character and curiosity,” said Eric Hynes, Curator of Film.

Aaron Sorkin is next in the line of succession for defending Jeremy Strong. Sorkin, who worked with Strong on Molly's Game and The Trial of the Chicago 7, released a lengthy statement defending the actor following an in-depth New Yorker article about his acting philosophy and methods. Journalist Michael Schulman interviewed Sorkin for the article over email, so The West Wing alum said he wanted to "speak up" after Schulman used his written responses to create a "distorted picture of Jeremy that asks us to roll our eyes at his acting process." Actress Jessica Chastain posted Sorkin's statement on social media on his behalf. In the letter,...

Wes Anderson returns to live-action in “The French Dispatch,” opening Oct. 22 from Searchlight Pictures. With the film set amid the world of a magazine, Anderson called on his go-to production designer Adam Stockhausen to build the world of fictional city Ennui-sur-Blasé and the offices of a New Yorker-esque publication.
The crew found a derelict felt factory in Angoulême, France, which turned out to be the perfect home for the sets Anderson would utilize for the film, divided into sections created as articles written by the Dispatch staff.
Stockhausen described how he built key sets.

In the 18 feature films he has made with his brother Ethan, Joel Coen has proved himself, over and over again, to be as fetishistically visual a director as anyone from the independent film world of the last four decades. Wes Anderson might be a more extreme example, but even there it would be hard to imagine the Wes Anderson life-as-a-dollhouse school had it not been for the example of the Coen brothers: the obsession they’ve always had with rendering a story in meticulously organized images, with each shot framed just so, the sets designed almost like dioramas, the whole sense of camera placement and cutting and spatial dynamics creating a heightened graphic-novel approach that, for the Coens, often seems to be the main reason they’re making the movie.
So it’s no surprise that in “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” an adaptation of the Shakespeare play that is Joel...

This year’s TIFF has been a subdued affair compared to its pre-pandemic days, but the announcement of a new, secret Steven Soderbergh film built up a lot of interest and buzz for festival patrons. There were a few theories about what the project could be: a recut of one of the director’s older films, most likely, 1991’s “Kafka”; a sequel to his debut feature film “sex, lies, and videotape”; or “Kimi,” the mystery thriller Soderbergh has been working on with screenwriter David Koepp, starring Zoë Kravitz, set in a post-covid world and supposedly reminiscent of “The Conversation,” “Rear Window,” and “Panic Room.”
Of those three options, the least enticing was definitely a recut film, and that is exactly what TIFF’s secret screening ended up being. Soderbergh introduced a reimagining of his sophomore film “Kafka,” retitled “Mr. Kneff” and re-edited as if from the perspective of a “deranged critic/fan.

Disney's "live-action" prequel to "The Lion King" is moving steadily forward. We knew that Oscar-winning filmmaker Barry Jenkins was on board to direct. And we also knew that the film, a so-called live-action movie that includes realistic CGI depictions of the animal characters — would be a prequel rather than a sequel to Jon Favreau's 2019 remake of the original 1994 animated film.
What we didn't know before today, however, was who would be voicing the younger versions of some of the well-known "Lion King" characters. There are now two actors officially attached to the project: Kelvin Harrison Jr. ("The Trial Of...

The U.S. lineup for films coming to Mubi this September has been announced, featuring some of my personal favorites of the last few years, notably Philippe Lesage’s severely overlooked coming-of-age drama Genesis, John Gianvito’s Helen Keller documentary Her Socialist Smile, Joe DeNardo, Paul Felten’s formally thrilling Slow Machine, and Robert Greene’s documentary Bisbee ’17, as well as Jia Zhangke’s latest release Swimming Out Till the Sea Turns Blue.
Also in the lineup is Bill Forsyth’s delightful Gregory’s Girl, Ari Folman’s hybrid feature The Congress, and Manoel de Oliveira’s Visit, or Memories and Confession, which was made in 1982, and only allowed to screen after his death.

Amanda Coe has plenty of experience adapting big novels into TV series, winning a BAFTA for the 2012 drama Room at the Top and also penning her version of Apple Tree Yard. In the latest from the creator and writer of The Trial of Christine Keeler she took on Black Narcissus, an adaptation of Rumer Godden’s steamy 1939 novel, which Coe turned into a three-part limited series for FX and the BBC.
The finale, which aired in November, is the latest entry in Deadline’s It Starts On the Page, a series that highlights the scripts that will serve as the creative backbones of the now-underway TV awards season. The scripts are all being submitted for Emmy consideration this year and have been selected using criteria that includes critical acclaim, a range of networks and platforms, and a mix of established and lesser-known shows.

In comparison to other Asian countries, Japan is relatively progressive when it comes to the recognition of LGBT rights, with the March 2021 district court ruling in favor of same-sex marriage being one of the latest developments in that regard. At the same time, as in many other countries and cultures, theory is one thing, but practice is something entirely different, and it might take quite a while before a society which traditionally favors conformism realizes that a same-sex couple not only has the same right, but can be parents just as much. In the past, Japanese director Rikiya Imaizumi has repeatedly discussed the theme of love and social traditions within his home country, for example in his aptly named feature “What is Love?” which talks about how love can possibly bridge prejudices and norms. In “his” the director tackles the issue of same-sex couples, about parenthood and images of gender within his home country.

Sergei Loznitsa's State Funeral is exclusively showing in many countries starting May 21, 2021 in Mubi's Luminaries series. When the Euromaidan Revolution of 2014 broke out in Kiev, Ukraine, Sergei Loznitsa was its most appropriate chronicler. For in the fifteen years leading up to the demonstrations that overthrew the Putin-friendly government of Viktor Yanukovych, the Ukrainian director had already managed to examine many moments of conflict and hardship in the history of Soviet and post-Soviet states. Be it through fiction, observational documentary, or archival collage, his work is mostly concerned with the way individuals are usurped by the masses, and the way these collective bodies are being framed and reframed throughout history. So when history was being written in real time on the central square of Kiev, Loznitsa was there to record it and to reinforce his cinematic thesis that captured events will always resist a linear narrative.Loznitsa avoids an overtly explicit approach to filmmaking.

Considering how dire last summer was for theatrical exhibition and the perpetually-in-flux release calendar, we opted to forgo our standard preview of the season. However, with theaters beginning to reopen across the country and promising releases on the horizon, there’s thankfully enough to warrant a summer movie preview this year. While potentially worthwhile studio offerings are still a bit slim, there’s still plenty to see over the next four months. As a note, while May usually indicates the start of the season, we’ve included a handful of films arriving on the last day of April, this Friday, that will roll out over the next month.
Check out our picks below and return for monthly updates as more is sure to be added to the calendar.
