The title is an allusion to the informal nickname of the X-Files character known as the Cigarette-Smoking Man. Having impressed Vince Gilligan, who was a writer and producer on the show, Bryan Cranston's performance in Drive (1998) was instrumental in getting him the role of Walter White. Dean Norris appeared in F. Emasculata (1995) and Aaron Paul appeared in Lord of the Flies (2001), playing characters with similar demeanors to their Breaking Bad characters.
When Walt Jr. asks Walter why he's been acting strange as Walter fumbles with cash, the camera pans down to the crib to reveal a label by Tampico. This is the company Walter spoke about with Krazy 8 while chained in Jesse's basement in ...And the Bag's in the River (2008).
Ken's BMW convertible is the E36 model whose production ceased in 1999, so it is at least nine years old. Also the 318i was the cheapest 3 series convertible of that series with the smallest engine. Owner Ken seems to be doing a lot better in his own mind than in actual reality.
