Ducktales in the future
There are quite a number of classic 'Ducktales' (a personal favourite as a child and am still immensely fond of it) episodes, especially in the first season, and most of the previous episodes have been pretty good to great with a few disappointments along the way. None of the 'Ducktales' episodes having said that in my mind are unwatchable, the lowest quality of all the previous episodes has been mixed bag and nothing less.
"My Mother the Psychic" is not one of the better 'Ducktales' episodes, from a period where the show became less consistent. It is far from bad, as said all of the show's episodes are watchable even if there were some less than decent episodes, a line that "My Mother the Psychic" only just avoids going over but did come close to doing so. A lot of things are done things but to me the character writing has been better in other episodes and some of it is questionable here actually from personal opinion.
Will start with what "My Mother the Psychic" does well. The animation is very vibrant, fluidly drawn and the attention to detail in the backgrounds is also notable. Can say nothing wrong about the music, the score is dynamic, beautifully orchestrated, never jarring with the action and full of energy. Just as animated shows of this kind should be. It is impossible to resist or forget the theme song, one of the catchiest in animation and ever.
'Ducktales' excels a vast majority of time in the writing and there are still some smart and amusing lines. The story does have its thrills and did like the chemistry between Fenton and his mother. They have one particularly sweet moment where it is clear how much they love each other. Fenton is becoming more interesting and likeable all the time and this is an episode where one doesn't have to worry about his flaws being overdone or as much the whole obliviousness of the other characters to the obvious connection to him and Gizmoduck. The Beagle Boys are awesome, as is the voice acting from particularly Hamilton Camp.
However, part of me did feel like they could have had even more depth to the mother and son relationship and perhaps could have focused more on it. Was not crazy about the writing for Glomgold, who is usually not a problem at all for me. He is too callous here and despite being a villain he is needlessly cruel which is somewhat out of character for him.
A better job could also have been done with his plan which could have been clearer. Once again Gizmoduck's role, while not pointless as such, is too convenient and was a role that most other characters could have filled easily. Usually love Scrooge, even if there are exceptions here and there, but not here in "My Mother the Psychic", don't ever remember him being this judgmental and it is enough to turn one off him.
In conclusion, decent but could have been even better with more focus and more consistent character writing. 6/10
