Dammit Johannes Roberts, why did you have to disappoint so? I absolutely Adore his 2010 film F (aka The Expelled) and – even though its a Noel Clarke film - Storage 24 wasn’t that bad either. So hearing that Roberts had the chance to helm a studio movie, a horror at that, set in India with its vast religious culture and strange chaotic lifestyle, And produced by Alexandre Aja… It’s safe to say I was excited for The Other Side of the Door. Even more so after Sarah Wayne Callies was cast in the lead – I’m a huge fan of hers, ever since the Prison Break days. So what went wrong?

The Blair Witch Project celebrates its 15th anniversary in the UK today (October 22).
The frightening, low-budget, found-footage horror movie was written and directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, and featured an unknown cast who used their own names in the film.
The Blair Witch Project 15 years on: The horror movie that changed everything
It became the first of its kind in Hollywood due to its commercial success and viral online campaign, which was created to make the production look like a real documentary. The Blair Witch website with details on the made-up mythology still exists.
And the clever campaign worked on some gullible and vulnerable viewers. We remember witnessing real tears of fear being shed by some audience members in the cinema (and definitely not ours...).
It purports to be a documentary shot by three inquisitive, daring, and at times daft students investigating the local Blair Witch legend in the Maryland forest.

"V/H/S" was actually pretty good as far as found footage horror movies ago, with its gimmicky no-budget aesthetic actually working especially well for its unnerving anti-casual-sex opener, "Amateur Night," and the creepy final segment involving a very haunted house, "10/31/98."
A sequel was inevitable, which brings us to "S-vhs" (super VHS), named after the semi-professional analog format that showed up in the late '80s and lasted for about two weeks.
This collection of lo-fi terror tales sports an even more impressive line-up of directors, including Simon Barrett ("Dead Birds"), Adam Wingard (" A Horrible Way to Die"), Edúardo Sánchez ("The Blair Witch Project"), Gregg Hale ("Seventh Moon"), Timo Tjahjanto ("The ABCs of Death"), Gareth Huw Evans ("The Raid: Redemption") and Jason Eisener ("Hobo with a Shotgun").
And you gotta love the synopsis for the film, courtesy of the Sundance Film Festival:

Lovely Molly
Stars: Gretchen Lodge, Johnny Lewis, Alexandra Holden | Written by Eduardo Sanchez, Jamie Nash | Directed by Eduardo Sanchez
Known predominantly for the massive hit that was The Blair Witch Project (one of the highest-grossing independent films of all time no less), Eduardo Sanchez returns with what is his fourth directorial effort since that films groundbreaking debut and his best movie yet. Now I’ll admit I wasn’t a huge fan of Blair Witch, I enjoyed it for what it was but the obnoxious cast always put me off, however Sanchez’s 2006 directorial follow-up Altered was a stroke of genius that undeservedly shoved out as a direct to DVD release. But now he’s back, surpassing all expectations with Lovely Molly.
The film starts off innocently enough, with the titular Molly (Lodge) and her newlywed husband Tim (Lewis) moving into the old family homestead to start their married life together.

A Planet Fury-approved selection of notable genre releases for August.
Jaws (1975) Universal Blu-ray/DVD/Digital combo Available Now
Steven Spielberg’s classic thriller has been painstakingly restored from the original film elements. Amity Island has never been so beautiful. The movie itself seems to improve with age, with amazing performances and scenes that still manage to unnerve — Susan Backlinie’s death at the beginning is truly one of the most horrifying ever portrayed onscreen. Making this a true “special edition” is the long-awaited release of The Shark Is Still Working, an expansive documentary on the making and the impact of the 1975 film. All of the surviving cast and crew are interviewed along with several minutes of never-before-seen footage.
Special Features:
*Digitally remastered and fully restored from high resolution 35mm original film elements.
*Digital Copy of Jaws
*UltraViolet Copy of Jaws
*The Shark Is Still Working: The Impact & Legacy...

Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick have had an interesting trajectory. They co-directed The Blair Witch Project thirteen years ago, that “found footage” granddaddy which would prove not only to be an incredible success, but a great inspiration to genre filmmakers a decade later. Love it or hate it, Blair Witch is a milestone whose lasting impact can’t be ignored. While Myrick has made a few Dtv clunkers, Sánchez has managed to make two Dtv gems — Altered, a dark horror-comedy about alien abduction revenge, and Seventh Moon, a hand-held camera honeymoon nightmare in China. Worth checking out. So, how does his latest effort stack up?
Lovely Molly combines a traditional style with found-footage elements through a handi-cam Molly carries around with her. There’s usually a dumb excuse as to why the characters are carrying around a camera while they’re freaked out. Molly’s isn’t really that important,...

Eduardo Sanchez helped to refresh the horror genre and kickstart the current wave of 'found footage' releases when he co-wrote and co-directed 1999's The Blair Witch Project.
He continued in that vein with Altered and Seventh Moon and is now filming his newest venture Exists, in which a group of friends are stalked by Bigfoot.
Meanwhile, his most recent completed project is about to scare its way into UK cinemas.
Lovely Molly is directed by Sanchez and co-penned with Jamie Nash. It arrives on screens on June 29, following several festival appearances.
The official synopsis is included here along with the trailer, the poster (above) and a selection of stills.
Official synopsis
When newlywed Molly Reynolds (Gretchen Lodge) returns to her long-abandoned family home, reminders of a nightmarish childhood begin seeping into her new life. A malevolent force, whether her own haunted past or some supernatural thing, tirelessly seeks to overwhelm her.

A faux documentary for the upcoming Lovely Molly has been created to promote Eduardo Rodriguez's upcoming supernatural thriller. Entitled Path to Madness, the doc takes a look at the eponymous character, Molly.
The film opens May 19th from Image Entertainment. Gretchen Lodge stars as Molly Reynolds who returns to her long-abandoned family home, frightful reminders of a nightmarish childhood begin seeping into her new life. She soon begins an inexorable descent into evil that blurs the lines between psychosis and possession.
Rodriguez previously co-created/directed The Blair Witch Project, Altered and Seventh Moon. He's currently filming a found footage Bigfoot film, called Exists, in Texas.

The Blair Witch Project's co-director Eduardo Sanchez has struggled to follow-up that surprise success in the decade since it hit. His subsequent Altered and Seventh Moon went straight to video, but his fortunes have improved. Lovely Molly will shortly invade cinema screens, and the trailer has just arrived to shakily follow you around. It's strange to think now what a novelty Blair Witch's found-footage schtick was back in 1999. Since then it's had its thunder well and truly stolen, not least by the Paranormal Activitys, which seem to have some echoes here (a ghost that follows you from house to house; a lead character that may be posessed - the film's original title was Posession). So that's a bit of a problem for a film trumpeting that it's, "From the filmmakers that started it all".The idea that Lovely Molly will "redefine horror once again" is perhaps a bit of a stretch,...

I remember seeing Blair Witch in theaters, and think this sounds like it should be scary. Do you think that possession movies have been overdone?

Since The Blair Witch Project in 1999, Eduardo Sanchez - one half of that film's creative team - has made a deliberate effort to dabble in various sub-genres and not get locked into one particular subject matter. Sure, he's no stranger to the supernatural - especially with Blair Witch and Seventh Moon, but he also tackled aliens in the impressive and overlooked Altered.
Next, he takes on possession in Lovely Molly, a film that garnered positive buzz at SXSW this month. Image Entertainment releases the film in a limited theatrical run on May 18th and we've scored an exclusive look at the poster.

SXSW is barely 24 hours away from starting (catch up with part one and part two of our preview pieces here), and at this point, it's important to be reminded that one of the things that makes the festival unique is a particular focus on the crossover between music and film, something that's been a special interest of ours since the very earliest days of The Playlist. SXSW doesn't just have a whole sidebar dedicated to music documentaries (with this year's batch including films centered on LCD Soundsystem, Paul Simon and Big Star), and a music festival that runs alongside, but the films screened seem to attract a disproportionate number of scores by indie and rock musicians.

Eduardo Sanchez, co-director of The Blair Witch Project , has carved a rather impressive path through horror with ambitious films like Altered and Seventh Moon . He's back again with Lovely Molly , a flick playing to Toronto International Film Festival audiences this week. Gretchen Lodge leads the cast which also includes Alexandra Holden and Johnny Lewis. Remember "Seventh Moon" (2008) and "Altered"(2006)? Probably not; they were direct-to-dvd horror movies. But Eduardo Sanchez's first movie was "The Blair Witch Project" (1999 - yep, it's been 12 years) and he's in Toronto with the Midnight Madness premiere of "Lovely Molly." A trailer can fool you--especially with the jump-cut frights horror movies provide--but this minute-43 left me freaked and curious, which is a very happy combination. What do you think?...

If it isn’t killer shark movies we’re reporting, it’s Bigfoot movies. Variety is reporting that The Blair Witch Project‘s director Eduardo Sanchez will be heading back into the woods for Exists, a new Bigfoot movie. The script is from Seventh Moon‘s scribe Jaime Nash, who along with Sanchez is finishing up in post on Possession (here).
The film follows a group of twenty-somethings who take a trip to a cabin in the wooded wilderness and are methodically hunted by a Bigfoot-like beast. Of interest is that Weta is working on the creature design for the film. Sanchez says of the project: “The film is the first in a trilogy exploring and reinventing the Bigfoot myth. We all remember the terror of watching such classics as The Legend of Boggy Creek, and I look forward to making Bigfoot scary again.”
The film is going to film this October.

Eduardo Miguel Sanchez, a Cuban-born American director best known for co-directing and writing the 1999 The Blair Witch Project, doesn’t want to be a one hit wonder – he is set to helm Exists, the first in a planned trilogy of films that is based on a Sasquatch-like beast.
As co-helmer of The Blair Witch Project, he emerged as a director seemingly destined for a career working on studio projects with gigantic budgets and established stars. Sadly, this never came to pass and Sánchez has spent the past decade making two relatively small genre films, Altered and Seventh Moon; Altered, a story about alien abductions, went better than expected and later, Seventh Moon, a more ambitious project that serves to make its failings that much more profound.
The film production team Haxan Films and Amber Entertainments are still in post-production on The Possession, starring Johnny Lewis and Alexandra Holden, also directed by Sanchez.

Eduardo Sanchez has planned a trilogy of films based around the lore of everybody's favorite Sasquatch and Avatar effects gurus, Weta will create the monster. Eduardo Sanchez co-directed the film that spawned the rebirth of found footage horror, The Blair Witch Project. His upcoming project Exists, was written by himself and Seventh Moon scribe Jamie Nash. Weta and Spectral Motion will handle effects duties by digitally recreating the monstrous Bigfoot. Filming is expected to begin this Fall outside of Austin, Texas. Sanchez confirms that Exists is the first film of a planned trilogy surrounding the myth of the elusive Sasquatch and hopes that the new franchise will "make Bigfoot scary again." Actor Brian Steele has been confirmed to play the monster himself which comes as great news to...

Eduardo Sanchez - the co-director of The Blair Witch Project - is jumping into Bigfoot lore with a planned film trilogy. The director will helm Exists , a project he penned with his Seventh Moon scribe Jamie Nash. Weta and Spectral Motion are teaming up to create Bigfoot (whoa!) and shooting is expected to begin this fall just outside of Austin, Texas. Sanchez says Exists will be the first film in a trilogy that explores and re-invents the Bigfoot myth and, as he says, make Bigfoot "scary again." Creature performer Brian Steele ( Predators , Hellboy ) will play the legendary monster. Sanchez is currently in post-production on The Possession starring Johnny Lewis and Alexandra Holden.

Welcome back to the last installment of Dread Central’s look back at the 25 milestones that shaped the landscape of independent horror filmmaking over the last 100 years. I apologize for the delay on the last five milestones as I had no idea just how busy I’d be while in Austin covering the South by Southwest Film Festival (which also champions the independent spirit of filmmaking most of the time) so I am glad to be back now and have the opportunity to pay homage to these last five moments in indie horror history.
We’ve already celebrated 20 milestones through 1987, and today we start in 1999 with one of the most innovative independent modern horror films that not only acted as a game changer in the horror genre but also was one of the first movies to effectively use the Internet as a marketing tool.

Before writer/director Scott Leberecht embarked on the sometimes difficult journey making his latest film Midnight Son (review here), he was working as a visual effects artist for Industrial Light & Magic. He said it was while he was still working for the prestigious company when the inspiration for his twist on modern vampires struck.
“I actually had the idea for Midnight Son percolating for a few years before I wrote the script,” explained Leberecht. “I got the inspiration for the story from when I was working up in San Francisco for Ilm. There was this one house on a corner I would pass all the time that had all the windows blocked out, and there were handmade paintings in the windows. I can vividly remember just standing there, staring at this house, and found the idea of someone living like that so fascinating - like there was someone inside that...

Actress Amy Smart has made a fresh and charming impression in a string of comedy features, from Road Trip to Rat Race to Just Friends, but her career also has a dark side. She had early roles in Campfire Tales and the Dee Snider vehicle Strangeland, and more recently appeared in Mirrors and Seventh Moon. Starting today, Smart can be seen in the supernaturally tinged dramatic thriller Dead Awake (in select cities from New Films Cinema), and she took the occasion to discuss her many genre features with Fango.

The director of Seventh Moon and the co-director of The Blair Witch Project is back to torment another newlywed couple (similar to those in Seventh Moon ). Eduardo Sanchez is set to direct Possession , which he wrote with Jamie Nash. Johnny Lewis and Alexandra Holden will star. The former is playing the film's groom, the latter is the bride's sister. We told you a few months back that the film follows a young woman's descent into evil after she moves back into a long-deserted family home.

Amber Entertainment and Haxan Films -- the banner behind "The Blair Witch Project" -- are scaring up "The Possession" as part of a multipicture deal. Amber and Haxan plan to start shooting in Maryland in October with "The Blair Witch Project" co-director Eduardo Sanchez helming from a script he co-wrote with Jamie Nash ("Seventh Moon"). "The Possession", which explores the thin line between demonic possession and psychosis, starts off as a simple horror film about things that go bump in the night but slowly turns into a thriller about the evil power that exists inside one troubled young woman. Since Blair Witch, Haxan has produced two features -- "Altered", released by Rogue Pictures in 2006, and "Seventh Moon", released by Lionsgate in 2008 -- and two TV series....

Hollywoodnews.com: Eduardo Sanchez doesn’t want to be a one-hit wonder … even if that hit was pretty huge.
Sanchez co-wrote and directed “The Blair Witch Project” in 1999, but didn’t crack the mainstream with follow-up features “ Altered” and “Seventh Moon.” He’ll reportedly try his hand at another spooky, demonic ghost story when he directs “Possession,” according to Variety.
The film, according to the piece, is about “the thin line between demonic possession and psychosis” and follows the possession of a young woman. Competition is getting tougher in the demonic possession marketplace, as Sanchez will be beaten to the punch by the upcoming “The Last Exorcism,” as well as a second “Paranormal Activity” picture in the works.
Still, I want to give the guy responsible for “Blair Witch” the benefit of the doubt. We’ll report more on “Possession” as we uncover details.

I wanted to put the cap on Pov news this week with Chronicle, but when it comes to a project being directed by Eduardo Sanchez, I think I can make room for one more. The guy hasn't delivered one widely successful film since The Blair Witch Project back in 1999, but that one alone makes any other project he gets his hands on instantly intriguing and that's why I'll be keeping a close eye on Possession. According to Variety, that'll be Sanchez's next venture behind the lens and it actually doesn't stray too far from the concept that brought him all the notoriety to begin with.
Sanchez co-wrote the script with Jamie Nash and it's about "the thin line between demonic possession and psychosis, starts off as a simple horror film about things that go bump in the night but slowly turns into a thriller about the evil power that exists inside one troubled young woman.

It's barely February, and Fantastic Fest 2010 already has news! A few days ago, John Bullington let the cat out of the bag about a feast event -- or should I say the cow -- when he mentioned on Facebook he is going to be cooking a local, grass-fed, 600-pound cow for Fantastic Fest in September.
Bullington, the executive chef at Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar, has been enticing palates at the Alamo for years, with movie feasts that sell out in hours. He also flexes his culinary skills a bit with special events at Fantastic Fest, particularly the annual filmmakers luncheon and dinner events like the Truffe truffle feast in 2009. A lot of planning goes into these events, and now he's got less than eight months to plan a carnivore's delight of a feast.
