Heartless Bastards, the roots-rock band led by Erika Wennerstrom, recently announced their new album: A Beautiful Life is the follow-up to 2015’s Restless Ones and will be released September 10th.
Now based in Austin, Wennerstrom enlisted players like Okkervil River guitarist Lauren Gurgiolo and My Morning Jacket keyboardist Bo Koster for this edition of the rotating Heartless Bastards lineup. The result is a sound that leans more indie-rock than Americana, but is informed by a hefty dose of soul. “How Low,” the album’s first single, is a satisfying summer...

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
The Adjustment Bureau – Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Lisa Thoreson
Beastly – Alex Pettyfer, Vanessa Hudgens, Mary-Kate Olsen
Rango – (voices of) Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Timothy Olyphant
Take Me Home Tonight – Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler
Movie of the Week
Rango
The Stars: Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Timothy Olyphant
The Plot: A chameleon that aspires to be a swashbuckling hero (Depp) finds himself in a Western town plagued by bandits and is forced to literally play the role in order to protect it.
The Buzz: Director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Carribean Trilogy, The Ring) takes a swash at his first animated feature. I thought the trailer for this film was excellent — Rango looks to be visually stunning, narratively engaging, and comically amusing. Verbinski’s adventure-film stripes are well earned — he knows his way around the genre — and this looks to be a strong addition to his filmography.

"The Lightkeepers" is a dark horse candidate for awards season attention, offering up Richard Dreyfuss in his showiest lead performance since 1995's "Mr. Holland's Opus" and an offbeat marketing plan by a well-financed foreign sales company intent on making a splash in the U.S. marketplace.
Opening on Friday in Los Angeles for an Oscar-qualifying run, the performance-driven period drama written and directed by Daniel Adams also features strong performances by Blythe Danner, Tom Wisdom and Mamie Gummer (Meryl Streep's daughter) in an old-fashioned love story set on Cape Cod in 1912.
"Lightkeeprs" is the third platform release this year by New Films International, a Sherman Oaks-based foreign sales company founded by Nesim Hason that has output deals in Latin America, Japan, Eastern Europe and elsewhere. The move into domestic distribution comes at a time it has gotten much harder to make presales without a U.S. release in place.

Chinese-American actress Bai Ling had her breakout role in 1997's Red Corner, a courtroom drama in which she defended Richard Gere from a corrupt government trial - romancing him, naturally, along the way. But since then, Ling has played a streak of bad girls and scantily-clad seductresses that put her equally-sensual public persona front and center, in films ranging from Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow to this year's Crank: High Voltage. Even in her latest film, the independent drama A Beautiful Life, Ling plays a stripper - albeit one with a heart of gold.
Some might argue that her career choices lean toward female objectification, and they wouldn't be wrong. But there's something wholly empowered about the way Bai Ling tackles her film roles. Sure, she's played her fair share of strippers, prostitutes, and femme fatales, but does it matter if she totally owns and embraces those characters...

A Beautiful Life, a film that I produced and co-wrote with Wendy Hammond, opens on October 2nd in limited release and stars Jesse Garcia, Angela Sarafyan, Bai Ling, Dana Delany, and Debi Mazar. The film deals with sexual abuse, love and violence. I'm not going to give the plot away except to say it ends with hope, which is why I spent so many years of my life trying to make it. I understand this story. I, like Maggie, the main character, am a survivor. I know what made her run and I understand what made her hide and search for a better existence. My wish is for this film to contribute to the continuing dialogue of how to better prevent abuse, as well as to protect and understand the survivors of sexual abuse. We need to know abuse occurs in many forms and many times a day all over this country.
