There has been an emergence of comedy films in Korean cinema ever since the immensely popular My Sassy Girl first blistered across theatre screens in 2001 and followed by other funny offerings that came out throughout the early 2000s like 200 Pounds Beauty (2006), and My Tutor Friend (2003). These films offer up a comical side to the stoic glitz and glamour of the Hallyu World and adding to this mix is this ‘riches-to-rags' dramedy written and directed by Ma Dae-Yoon, which features the return of Lee Min-jung with her first feature role since Wonderful Radio (2012).

Byun Sung-hyun’s trajectory as a director has been an interesting one. Starting off with the low-key drama “The Beat Goes On”, he moved on with the sex comedy “Whatcha Wearin’?” Changing gears yet again, he directed the crime thriller “The Merciless”, which of course had its premiere and Cannes and was generally well-received by the audience. Cue four years later and his next project, the long-awaited “Kingmaker” is finally gearing up for a release in December, 2021, once again starring his “The Merciless” star Sol Kyung-gu, alongside Lee Sun-kyun.

Korean director Hong Eui-jeong’s debut feature “Voice of Silence” stood out at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival as the year’s best film from its Cheval Noir main competition section. The film, about two men who clean up after an organized crime organization, has enjoyed an impressive international festival run, having built up strong buzz as a project when it was selected to Venice’s Biennale College Cinema program in 2016.
“In a film festival that’s known as a melting pot of genres, ‘Voice of Silence’ feels like an excellent representative for the top prize in the Cheval Noir section. It’s earnest and sincere in tone but also unpredictable and experimental, impossible to pin down, and truly idiosyncratic,” said the jury in a statement accompanying the announcement.

Chang-bok (Yoo Jae-Myung) and Tae-in (Yoo Ah-in) sell eggs from the back of a truck in the country. It’s honest work but hardly pays the bills. So rather than go home when they change their clothes, they drive to an old, abandoned warehouse. Now donning ponchos, they spread plastic sheets below the only thing it can be hanging above: the body of a tied-up man, beaten and confused. If they’re being honest, this gig acting as set-up and clean-up crew for a local cartel doesn’t pay that much either. It’s consistent work, though, and the boss seems to like them enough to offer a couple side jobs. One such request has just been delivered.
They don’t like the task when asked and like it even less when they discover some details were left out. The boss merely stated that he wanted them to watch somebody for a couple days.

29 of the contributors of Asian Movie Pulse from America, Europe and Asia have voted the 25 Best Films of 2020, resulting in what we consider a great selection, despite the difficulties the current year presented to both the shooting and the availability of new movies. In that regard, the list includes films from Malaysia, Japan, Iran. S. Korea, Kazakhstan, Singapore, China, and Taiwan while crime thrillers, animations, shorts, LGBT, comedies, horror, black-and-white and even “quarantine movies” have found a place.
Without further ado, here are the best Asian films of 2020, in reverse order. Some films may have premiered in 2019, but since they mostly circulated in 2020, we decided to include them, after an intense fight that lasted for 150 nights (give or take) and ended up with even more victims

Even a year like 2020, which has, by all means, been quite tumultuous with regard to cinema or culture in general, has a few success stories to offer when it comes to film. “Voice of Silence”, the feature debut by Korean director Hong Eui-jeong, managed to create quite some buzz in her home country as it gained acclaim by audiences and critics alike. What makes the success so noteworthy is not just the circumstances, but also the blend of genres, in a mixture of thriller and family drama. At the same time, it tells a story of those members of society that are forgotten or made speechless, much like one of the main characters.

Comedy drama “Samjin Company English Class” tickled up enough laughs to score $2.1 million over its opening weekend. But the wider Korean box office remains range-bound at destructively low levels.
“Samjin,” which tells a tale of three young women determined to improve themselves, and who along the way stumble across the nefarious activities of the company they are working at, accounted for half of the nationwide total. Released on Wednesday, the film finished the weekend with a five-day cumulative of $2.72 million.
Last week’s top film “Voice of Silence” tumbled by 70% to fourth place, earning just $438,000 in its second weekend. Its 11-day cumulative is $2.7 million. Earlier winner, “Pawn” had a $512,000 weekend, enough to bounce up to second place, and to increase its cumulative to $12.0 million after a month on release.
But with the Chuseok holidays fading into the past, the Korean cinema business has now been stuck in the $3-4 million range for three successive weeks.

The theatrical cinema market in South Korea is just about strong enough to sustain a trickle of new release titles, but its continuing weakness points to growing problems in store. Ticket prices are set to be raised to help ease operators’ losses.
New-release crime drama, “Voice of Silence” topped the Korean box office with a quiet $1.47 million score over the weekend, according to data from the Korean Film Council’s Kobis system. With that lowly score, “Silence” accounted for 45% of the $3.04 million nationwide weekend aggregate.
Released by New on Thursday, for a cumulative total is $1.73 million, the film features two men whose job is to clean up crime scenes. The story develops a growing friendship between one of the men who cannot speak and a kidnapped girl who is left in their charge.
“Voice” eased aside “Pawn” which had topped the chart for the two previous weekends, including the busy Chuseok (Korean thanksgiving) weekend.
