It appears Madonna might be finding her way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a director.
After contacting the Queen of Pop for permission to use her 1989 single ‘Like a Prayer’ in Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds revealed she “gave a great note” for the sequence that quickly ended up in the final cut.
“Also, let’s preface it with the fact that — Madonna doesn’t just license the song, and particularly that song has not been licensed,” he said on SiriusXM. “So it was a big deal to ask for it and certainly a bigger deal to use it… We went over and met with her and showed her how it was being used and where and why.”
Director Shawn Levy admitted “it did feel like we were meeting royalty,” as Reynolds said the meeting “was one of the great thrills of my life.”
Reynolds added, “And she gave a great note.

Julia Garner is still hung up on the Madonna biopic.
After being cast as the Material Girl pop icon in June 2022, the film was shelved by Universal in January 2023. Madonna, who co-wrote, produced, and is set to direct her own life story for the big screen, recently announced a world tour.
However, “Inventing Anna” alum Garner teased that’s not the end of Madonna’s biopic.
“I don’t want to tell too much,” Garner said to Entertainment Tonight. “I’m going to keep things…fingers crossed.”
Garner reportedly endured an intense audition process to land the role of Madonna. The so-called boot camp was also attended by Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie, Odessa Young, and Emma Laird, with singers Bebe Rexha and Sky Ferreira also having previously been considered for the lead part. Julia Fox was rumored to be cast as Madonna’s longtime friend and fellow actress Debi Mazar.

Los Angeles, Jan 25 (Ians) The anticipated biopic of music legend Madonna is taking an indefinite holiday. The project, which the icon was going to direct herself, is no longer in development at Universal Pictures.
Speculation over the fate of the movie began instantly after Madonna announced a career-spanning world tour last week — one that sold out shows in New York, London, Paris and other cities in minutes, reports ‘Variety’.
Insiders familiar with Madonna said her sole focus is the tour, but she remains committed to making a film about her life one day.
While announced in 2020, development on the film lingered on through the end of 2022.
Madonna worked on two script drafts encompassing large periods of her creative and personal life. An earlier version was written with Oscar winner Diablo Cody (their writing sessions were widely disseminated on social media).
Erin Cressida Wilson took a second pass.

Madonna’s biopic about her own life, which the pop icon was expected to co-write and direct at Universal, is not moving forward at the studio and is no longer in development, IndieWire has learned.
Julia Garner was attached to star in the film as the “Like a Virgin” singer, but speculation that the film was on hold began when Madonna announced a world tour that will kick off in July. Madonna and Universal announced the project back in 2020, but development stalled last year. Diablo Cody was writing the script, with a revision by Erin Cressida Wilson. Madonna even shared images of her writing sessions alongside Cody after the project was announced.
Garner, known for “Inventing Anna” and “Ozark,” won the role after reports that a group of young starlets all participated in a boot camp of singing and dancing. Other stars such as Bebe Rexha, Florence Pugh, and Alexa Demie...

Universal’s Madonna biopic – starring Julia Garner and directed by the singer herself – is not moving forward, a source with knowledge of the matter confirmed to TheWrap.
The news comes a week after the “Material Girl” singer announced a career-spanning, globe-trotting tour, raising speculation about the untitled film’s future. It has languished in development since 2020, when Madonna was set to direct and co-write with “Juno” scribe Diablo Cody. They completed the script in April 2021 despite rumors that Cody had exited the project, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Garner won the leading role in June 2022. The “Ozark” and “Inventing Anna” star was reportedly up against stars like Florence Pugh, Odessa Young, Alexa Demie, Sky Ferreira and Bebe Rexha during the months-long audition process.

Looks like Madonna is her own lucky star.
In what seems to be an unprecedented creative move, the pop icon will direct a film about her life and career — one that’s been heavily teased on her social media accounts, through script sessions with her Oscar-winning co-writer Diablo Cody.
That Madonna, whose staggering five-decade career has seen countless musical reinventions and a run at filmmaking and acting, would direct her own journey from New York City’s slums to the heights of global stardom is beyond rare. The super-famous are often involved peripherally as creative consultants and executive producers in their own adapted stories (like recent awards players like “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Rocketman”).
The untitled film has landed at Universal Pictures, under the wing of filmed entertainment group chair Donna Langley and producer Amy Pascal, whose eponymous company is set up on the Universal lot. A production timeline is unknown...

When life gives you lemons, er, quarantine, it’s best to at least try and make lemonade. That’s what Madonna and Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody are currently up to, as the pop star revealed via Instagram on Saturday. The pair appear to be working on a musically centered screenplay, according to the black-and-white video posted on Madge’s account. “When you’re stuck in a house with multiple injuries, what do you do?” she wrote. “Write a screenplay with Diablo Cody about…” and then a bunch of emojis alluding to the script being film- and music-related. Watch the video below.
The screenplay may even be about Madonna herself, as she is seen in the video describing her inimitable and iconic Jean-Paul Gaultier “Blonde Ambition” satin cone-bra look from her 1990 tour. “The garters were over the suit bottoms, right?” Cody asks. “Yeah,” Madonna says. “Straight pin-striped pants sit beneath the...

I love slow-dance scenes in romantic movies, and the one shared between Elle (Joey King) and Marco (Taylor Zakhar Perez) in The Kissing Booth 2 is one of the film's emotional highlights. In the middle of their Halloween party, it seems like the two of them have finally let their guards down as they embrace each other and slowly sway back and forth beneath the neon lights of the dark venue. Their body language says everything I need to know, their shared affection obvious and captivating, but it's the music in this scene that takes the emotional tension to a whole new level.
The live band plays a rich and smooth melody resonating through the screen as the lyrics slowly build into a defining "not all who wander are lost." Elle and Marco stare into each others' eyes and, in classic rom-com fashion, the world around them blurs. It's one...

If first you don’t succeed, try and try again. That’s clearly the motto for pop icon Madonna when it comes to her directing career. She initially experimented with filmmaking with the little seen indie “Filth and Wisdom” in 2008 and then made an impressive (in context) step forward with the problematic “W.E.” in 2011. Now, the Material Girl has signed on for her third helming effort, “Taking Flight” for MGM.

Madonna doesn't care what us mere mortals think, and who could blame her? Forget Queen Esther; Madonna was Queen of Dragons for Purim! You can't shush her during a movie! So why would terrible reviews stop her from directing another movie? They won't!
The book that's luring Madonna back to the director's chair is a politically charged love story by Rebecca Walker, "Adé: A Love Story." Walker, who is the daughter of Alice Walker and Mel Leventhal, has previously written non-fiction about feminism, sexuality, being multiracial and Jewish, and her painful, contentious relationship with her Pulitzer Prize-winning mother. "Adé" is a semi-autobiographical novella about a bisexual woman who, while traveling abroad with a friend, falls in love with a Swahili Muslim man named Adé. Their love affair, which takes place on an island off the coast of Kenya, is interrupted by political upheaval and much more.

She's now preparing to direct an adaptation of a favourite book, Rebecca Walker's Ade: A Love Story.Walker, who happens to be the daughter of The Color Purple author Alice, channelled some of her life experience to fuel her novel, published last year. It follows a 19-year-old American student travelling to Africa and falling for a young Muslim man. Their romance quickly progresses and they make plans to marry, only to come up against the brick wall of cultural and political forces.Madonna, who is now on the lookout for a writer to craft the adaptation, is on record as a fan of the book; her name was used in adverts praising the writing. With Silver Linings Playbook producer Bruce Cohen helping her round up financing,...

Pop legend will direct Africa-set romance adapted from the novel by Rebecca Walker, daughter of Color Purple author Alice
• Remind yourself of Madonna's last effort behind the camera
Despite the critical and commercial failure of her last directorial effort, W.E., Madonna is to return to film directing with Adé: A Love Story, an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Rebecca Walker.
Walker, the daughter of The Color Purple author Alice Walker, published the novel last year. It concerns a pair of Us students travelling in Kenya, one of whom falls in love with a local man, Adé – she adopts an Arabic name, and tries to adjust to a new life in unfamiliar surroundings, before encountering cultural friction as the pair try to visit the Us. Armchair psychologists might point to parallels with Madonna's life: the singer moved to the UK to live with film-maker husband Guy Ritchie,...

When Madonna unveiled her second directorial effort "W.E." at the Venice Film Festival in 2011, the critics (this one included) were pretty merciless. That glossy mashup of Wallis Simpson biopic and contemporary Harlequin romance was, admittedly, a pretty easy target -- The Weinstein Company's advance hype didn't fool anybody -- but the sheer vapid ineptitude of its storytelling still managed to surprise. Andrea Riseborough received some good notices for work as Simpson, Arianna Phillips' super-glam costumes were Oscar-nominated and Madge's own theme song even scooped a Golden Globe, but after this and her little-seen debut "Filth and Wisdom," no one seemed to be begging the pop queen to return to the director's chair. But hey, Madonna has never in her entire career been cowed by criticism, and she's not about to start now. It was announced earlier today that she is to direct her third feature "Adé" -- an adaptation of...

Madonna's film efforts haven't received the highest praise in the past, but the 54-year-old queen of pop may try her hand at directing once again with an adaptation of the recently released novel "The Impossible Lives of Greta Wells."
Andrew Sean Greer, author of "Greta Wells," told Sf Weekly that Madonna called him personally to discuss obtaining the rights for a movie. It's unclear whether the singer will simply produce, as Greer speculated, or take on a larger role with the project.
"Greta Wells" depicts a woman living in New York's Greenwich Village in 1985 when her gay twin brother dies of an unnamed disease that mirrors AIDS. The shock treatments she receives as therapy allow her to travel back in time to 1918 and 1941, where she encounters old acquaintances and finds much-needed self-discovery. Greer's book has received positive reception from critics, with The New York Times calling it a "generous...

Playing troubled Lol in This is England won Vicky McClure a Bafta and a raft of new roles. Here she talks about the 'psychological nightmare' of working with director Shane Meadows
In an east London pub, Vicky McClure is reeling off a list of her recent roles. There's True Love, an entirely improvised TV drama directed by Dominic Savage, in which she co-stars with David Tennant. There's a big-budget Tom Stoppard adaptation of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, with Keira Knightley in the title role. McClure plays a nun called Serafina who has a brief affair with Domhnall Gleeson's Levin: "not a one-night stand, because it's a bloody period drama, but that kind of thing". There's Svengali, based on an internet viral about the music business, and, perhaps most improbably, the latest Jason Statham vehicle, Hummingbird, in which Great Yarmouth's leading action hero hunts down the killers of his former lover.

Madonna’s first foray into directing in film, Filth and Wisdom, was something of a mess; bouncing between a number of disconnected scenes and even a musical number by the lead singer of Gogol Bordello, Madonna gave the audience little to hold on to both visually and narratively. With her sophomore effort, W.E., balancing the love story of Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII with that of the modern Wally who admires her legacy, Madonna manages to fix half of her earlier directorial failings by giving us plenty to look at in a story that manages to maintain a more cohesive form. Unfortunately, these modest successes are overshadowed by a poorly written and overlong story that relies on heavy-handed, expository dialogue to establish every character and plot point.

Fans of Shane Meadows work on the big and small screens will know the name and work of Vicky McClure. She won a well deserved Best Actress BAFTA in 2011 for her role as Lol in the spin-off TV series This is England ’86, a role she reprised for a third time for This is England ’88 to great acclaim.
She is fast becoming one of Britain’s rising stars with a return as Lol for the final hurrah as Meadows’ long running series enters a new decade as rave culture begins to take hold in 1990, and there is still time in the next two years for a role in John Hardwicke’s Svengali and a nicely diverse turn in Hummingbird with Jason Statham.
It’s no surprise that McClure maintains her closeness to Meadows, her role as Ladine in the director’s third film, A Room for Romeo Brass, put her in the frame with Andrew Shim,...

Hollyoaks' Holly Weston has revealed that she gets invited to Madonna's birthday parties and once watched a screening of W.E. at the popstar's house. The actress, who plays Ash Kane in the soap, was in the first film Madonna directed - Filth and Wisdom - four years ago, and the pair have stayed in touch since. "I played a ballet dancer working as a stripper and pole-dancer," Weston told Ok. "It started off as a short film, but because Madonna really wanted to get into directing, the more we did on it, the more scenes she added, so eventually it became feature-length." Asked what it was like working with the icon, she said: "It was very strange, and quite scary, because it was my first lead role. I just did exactly as I was told! "She's very business-like - exactly (more)...

On the weekend of her much-anticipated Super Bowl performance, The Weinstein Company released Madonna's "W.E." on four theaters. While falling well short of disastrous, the results were unspectacular. According to estimates provided by Rentrak earlier today, the film took in $45,000, averaging a so-so $11,250. It's a step up from Madonna's previous directorial effort, "Filth and Wisdom" which opened to a $4,597 gross and ended up taking in $22,406. "W.E." has already surpassed that film's final gross. Though that's not really something to celebrate. Also opening this weekend was Ben Wheatley's acclaimed British import "Kill List," which opened on two screens and grossed $12,400 for a $6,200 average. The highest per-theater-average of any film in release belonged to the second weekend of Shayne Edwards' doc "An Inconsistent Truth." The film, which questions the validity of the "global...

-- The question that needs to be asked about Madonna's "W.E." is why?
Not why would she set out to make a movie to satisfy her obsession with Wallis Simpson, a woman more famous and notorious in her day than Madonna is herself. But why would anyone, after reading the jumbled, rambling script Madonna co-wrote, turn her loose to direct such a mess of pretty pictures and hollow perceptions about the curse of celebrity and the price of true love?
It's easy to understand Madonna's fixation with Simpson, the American divorcee for whom Britain's King Edward VIII gave up the throne. Madonna clearly empathizes with this Material Girl of another generation over the microscopic, often malicious media attention both have endured.
But "W.E." amounts to a case of a big-headed superstar overreaching with empty-headed results. It's poorly conceived, awkwardly orchestrated, drearily paced and bizarrely assembled. The images have...

Madonna.s historical curiosity is better than one might imagine despite her poor directorial record in Filth and Wisdom. It aims to be a polished, elegant passion piece about an event that changed the worlds of royalty, celebrity and history itself. It takes place in a lonely world of outsiders, the dark side of the limelight, something with which Madonna is certainly familiar. The story of Wallis Simpson and her Prince is solid but the New York modern day parallel story isn.t as strong as it should be. The imbalance is striking and problematic. It begins with peculiar pacing, awkward directing choices and a number of seemingly false starts but as far as art direction and detail is concerned,...

No matter her audacity, the Material Girl is only as good as her material, and Madonna has only half a movie here. “W.E.” is the second film that the singer (and sometime actress) has directed. It’s a definite leap forward from 2008’s “Filth and Wisdom,” her mangy maiden directorial effort, but suffers from a faulty structural conceit that undercuts and fatally weakens the movie. (“W.E.” opens tomorrow, Dec. 9, in Los Angeles for a one week, Oscar-qualifying run. It will then receive a wider release Feb. 3, just in time for --...

Madonna tries her hand at directing and writing for a second time in W.E., a romantic drama surrounding the real-life affair of American divorcée Wallis Simpson and England's King Edward VIII controversial affair. Does Madonna have what it takes as a director? You be the judge in this clip from W.E.
Madonna first gave the director's chair a stab with her directorial debut Filth and Wisdom in 2008. The singer turned actress turned writer/director has often been giving grief for her cinematic choices and it doesn't seem to be any different with W.E. in which she wrote the screenplay with Alek Keshishian. In W.E., the romantic drama focuses on a contemporary affair between a married woman and a Russian security guard juxtaposed with the royal scandal that rocked the United Kingdom when King Edward VIII

"W.E." is less outright bad than underwhelming; if the director were unknown, it would hardly deserve notice. Like her first film, the 2008 "Filth and Wisdom," it suffers from countless storytelling flaws. But where her debut was a bizarre low-budget and blatantly amateur British comedy that embraced its rough edges, "W.E." is all sleek, polished surfaces and overabundant romanticism. Together, they also reveal two sides of Madonna's career, the oscillation between sacred and profane that defines her iconography. The story has a simplistic concept and an epic scope. Covering two time periods, "W.E." follows soul-searching New Yorker Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish in a committed performance), a woman suffering from her tortured marriage to an abusive man (Richard Coyle). She finds solace in obsessing over the famous affair between King Edward VIII (James D'Arcy) and Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough), whose allure eventually...

The Weinstein Co. released the official new trailer for the Madonna-directed “W.E.” The film stars Abbie Cornish, Andrea Riseborough, James D’Arcy, Oscar Isaac and Natalie Dormer. Here is the film’s synopsis: Madonna's W.E. is a beautifully crafted, passionate tale about the search for true love in the modern world, viewed through the prism of one of history's most fabled romances. The year is 1998, and Manhattan is abuzz with anticipation about the upcoming auction of the estate of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. But the auction is far more than a diversion for Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish), a transplanted Southerner trapped in an unhappy and abusive marriage. Transfixed by the exquisite artifacts of the Windsors' lives, Wally becomes obsessed with the love story of Wallis Simspon (Andrea Riseborough), the chic, charismatic American who captured the heart of King Edward VIII (James D'Arcy). As she learns more...

The trailer for Madonna's new movie, W.E., hit the web two days ago, causing critics and moviegoers alike to question its success. The British love-story tells the tale of King Edward VIII and his lover, Wallis Simpson, through a lonely New Yorker (Abby Cornish) in the late 1990's, nearly six decades later.
Madonna's directorial debut was Filth and Wisdom in 2008 which received less than supportive reviews, and reviews from festivals where W.E. has been screened have been mixed. However, Madonna's movie career is not without some critical success. In 1997, the pop star was honored with a Golden Globe for her role in Evita. W.E. opens in New York and Los Angeles on December 9th.

In 2008, Madonna directed "Filth and Wisdom," a comedy about three roommates living together in a London flat. For her next film, she's taking a very big step up.
The singer/activist/actress is preparing to debut her second feature film, "W.E.," the story of King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, the woman for whom he left the throne. You may remember the event from last year's film, "The King Speech," but Madonna's picture is less war and more love story.
James D'Arcy plays King Edward, while Andrea Riseborough takes on the role of the twice divorced American Simpson. Abbie Cornish, meanwhile, is the true protagonist, as the story is told through the eyes of her character, Wally Winthrop.

[1] Madonna's first directorial effort -- 2008's Filth and Wisdom -- wasn't exactly well received, but you don't get to be a pop icon of her magnitude without thick skin and a lot of persistence. The multihyphenate returned to the director's chair this year for W.E., a drama consisting of two interlocking tales: one, the very well-known historical romance between Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough) and King Edward VII (James D'Arcy); the other, a contemporary affair between a married New Yorker (Abbie Cornish) and a museum guard (Oscar Isaac). Watch the first trailer after the jump. [via The Hollywood Reporter [2], Women and Hollywood [3]] The trailer ends with a card saying W.E. is "in post production," so it may not be fair to call this an official trailer. Still, it seems to offer a good glimpse at what the movie has to offer. And what we can expect, apparently, is pretty (if not especially original) imagery,...

Does being married to a movie director for eight years qualify you to be a director yourself? Madonna seems to think so. W.E. is the pop star's second directorial effort (the first was 2008's Filth and Wisdom — yeah, we don't remember it either) and it did not garner much critical acclaim when it was screened at the Venice Film Festival.
Madonna has reportedly said that the critics comments seemed to reflect their feeling about her rather than their feelings about the movie. Perhaps, but the critics are entitled to like any movies they want. No disrespect to the Madonna lovers of the world, but critics prefer different movies.
A three minute trailer for the period biopic of Wallis Simpson intertwined with a story about a modern-day woman obsessed with the Duchess is certainly stylish and lovely. Whether the story and dialogue are as pitch perfect as the costumes and makeup is still undetermined.

She.s known as a pop music icon, but Madonna has already dipped her toe into the realm of filmmaking once, with 2008's comedy Filth and Wisdom. She.s following that up with an historical romance, W.E., that made its debut at the Venice Film Festival to tepid reviews.
