SkyShowtime‘s Spanish content has “resonated globally,” its chief content officer Kai Finke said on Thursday.
Speaking at the international market and networking event Conecta Fiction & Entertainment in Toledo, Spain, on Thursday, Finke pinpointed the successes his company has faced in recent years with their projects in Spain. Two of the most recent originals include Bosé and Los Enviados, produced by Paramount, and comedy series Por H o Por B. But the team are particularly excited about an upcoming program called Mamen Mayo, a mockumentary series that combines dark comedy with family drama. Each episode follows inheritance mediator Mamen Mayo and her law firm.
“The package seemed really compelling,” Finke said when asked about what drew SkyShowtime to the show. “We’ve looked at the script and the treatment. It’s a production company we know will deliver… It feels like a show that will be really complimentary to our programming slate.

Netflix’s The Program: Cons, Cults, and Kidnapping is occasionally as hard to watch as it is impossible to ignore. Directed by Katherine Kubler, a former “student” of the troubled-teen-repair institution, the limited documentary series uncovers the appalling conditions of the now-defunct and abandoned Ivy Ridge boarding academy located in the wilds of Oswegatchie, New York.
Kubler attended or was incarcerated in Ivy Ridge from March 2004 to June 2005. She entered at age 15, kidnapped abruptly against her will in the middle of the night on the grievous charge of sipping a Mike’s Hard Lemonade at a previous school. Facing an unbelieving father, Kubler feels the forcefully-abandoned experience she endured stole her teenage years, and continues to embezzle large deposits from her adult psyche. Her post-traumatic stress and persistent panic attacks are a constant reminder of damage that cannot be undone.
Except maybe through long-form journalism. Kubler self-effacingly calls herself an “amateur gumshoe,...

You can never go wrong with moms.
It's always a delight when Lena and Stef guest star in an installment, and Good Trouble Season 5 Episode 17 gave us some family moments between the Adams-Foster parents and the Hunters.
And the hour also saw Mariana and Joaquin doing the opposite of what Callie told them to do. Go figure, right?
Picking up where things left off with Alice and the Ferret trio, things weren't going well between Morty and Maury, and predictably, it was because the latter was hurt that Morty never told him he was gay sooner.
It's not uncommon for people in Maury's position to think this way and feel as if not knowing someone they love to their core is a personal affront.
He felt as if their whole friendship was in question if Morty could keep something so monumental from him.
It's a generally human reaction to situations like this,...

The return of Callie Adams-Foster makes everything better.
Dare we say it, but Good Trouble Season 5 Episode 16 felt the most like a vintage installment for this series in quite some time and tapped into the Good Trouble nostalgia and endearing vibe of Good Trouble Season 1.
Callie's return felt as well-placed as Isabella's, and all of the plot points of the hour were compelling and moved things forward.
From the performances and pacing to the subject matter and character focus, "One Way or Another" was one of the strongest hours of Good Trouble Season 5, combining the season's darker tones with some of the compelling approaches to life's issues that were so prominent for the series in its prime.
There wasn't a single miss with storylines during this hour.

Singer-songwriter Mariah Carey is still in the Halloween spirit. After sharing photos of herself dressed up as Jessica Rabbit from Disney’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit on Instagram, the singer, 54, surprised fans by revealing another Halloween costume.
For her second festive outfit, Carey chose to take a page out of Rachel McAdams’ playbook by portraying her ‘Mean Girls’ character, Regina George, reports People magazine.
Carey recreated McAdams’ outfit from the scene in the film in which her white tank top is cut with two holes by Lizzy Caplan’s character, Janis Ian. The performer paired the shirt with a purple bra, black miniskirt, and black pointed-toe pumps.
As per People, she debuted the look in an Instagram video alongside the caption: “Whatever i’m getting cheese fries #notyet.” The clip had Blondie’s ‘One Way Or Another’ playing in the background, along with an animated graphic that read, “That’s so fetch.

In news that is sure to move waves in Spain, Portugal and beyond, former Netflix exec Juan Mayne, a name inextricably linked to the build of Spain as a global film-tv power, has been appointed as SkyShowtime regional content director for Iberia, encompassing Spain and Portugal.
The move creates an effective new streaming door to knock on for Spanish producers as some other – though not all – platforms are curbing commissions or orders in the two countries.
SkyShowtime in Spain and Portugal will be led, moreover, by one of Spain’s best known, connected and personable of TV execs, supercharging its operation in Spain from the get-go.
Mayne will report to the Amsterdam-based Kai Finke, himself appointed in September as chief content officer at the Comcast-Paramount joint venture SVOD platform , which focuses on European audiences. Justin Bieber has millions of fans, but who knew that Olivia Wilde was among them?
The actress/director made that clear during a recent appearance on “Subway Takes”, the one-minute talk show that takes place on a New York City subway train.
“Good singers shouldn’t do karaoke.”
During her chat with host Kareen Rahma, the conversation turned to karaoke, and Wilde shared her belief that only people who can’t sing should be doing karaoke.
“Good singers shouldn’t do karaoke,” she declared, explaining why professional singers should sing professionally, and leave karaoke to the amateurs.

SkyShowtime will complete its European roll-out this month with two remaining launches in Spain and Andorra, Variety can reveal.
The two markets, which will launch on Feb. 28, take SkyShowtime’s footprint to over 20 markets and completes its European configuration, allowing the platform to now focus on building out a premium content offering that will help it compete with Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ in Europe.
The service is also establishing itself amid a turbulent time for one of its namesake brands. Paramount Global revealed earlier this month that legacy brand Showtime will be renamed as “Paramount+ With Showtime” in a bid to integrate streaming service Paramount+ across both linear and streaming platforms. Showtime co-presidents Gary Levine and Jana Winograde are also exiting their current posts amid the shake-up at the pay-tv channel.

Though it feels like the phrase “generational trauma” is everywhere these days, it’s only in the past decade that growing mental health awareness has made such terms ubiquitous. Though scientists have long studied the ways inherited trauma can actually alter our DNA, only recently have epigenetics filtered into everyday usage. But artists do not need science to tell them what they feel in their bones, and film is a powerful tool to illustrate the ephemeral memories one stores in the body.

For those of you who have always wanted to see Juliette Binoche play a foul-mouthed truck driver — and you know who you are — “Paradise Highway” delivers the goods, and then some. This counterintuitive casting is actually just one of the selling points for writer-director Anna Gutto’s solid and satisfying thriller, a shrewdly constructed melodrama that does not transcend cliches and conventions so much as show how useful and effective they can be in the right hands.
Offering a précis of the plot could arguably do the movie a disservice, since the narrative pivots on human trafficking — specifically, the trafficking of prepubescent girls. It’s a subject that often brings out the excessive worst in even the most well-intentioned directors, and more often elicits an understandable “thanks, but no thanks” response from many potential viewers. Throughout “Paradise Highway,” however, Gutto demonstrates welcome restraint and a meticulous avoidance of anything that resembles exploitation,...

“It’s not alway best to be first” is the verdict of HBO Max Global Boss Johannes Larcher as he talked up international strategy at a Mip TV keynote this afternoon.
Speaking to the territories in which HBO Max will be launching after competitors including Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video and Paramount+, the former Hulu exec said his team can “learn a lot from the actions others have taken both successfully and less successfully in the past.”
“We are doing this in a phased manner and are being capital efficient,” he added.
His comments were in contrast to Paramount International boss Raffaele Annecchino, who used his Series Mania keynote to praise Paramount+’s quick launches in key European territories.
Larcher rejected the notion that HBO Max is in direct competition with the other streamers, stating: “It’s not about being number one but about creating a service that best serves our customers.
