Gather around, children, and I shall tell you all about the horrors of generational trauma! Mike Flanagan ("Doctor Sleep" and so much more) has created his own little Netflix universe with a series of horror shows that share several cast members as well as several themes, specifically the idea of familial trauma being passed down through the ages and being intertwined with the supernatural.
Flanagan's latest Netflix series is "The Fall of the House of Usher," a spookshow heavily inspired by the works of the Godfather of Goth himself, Edgar Allan Poe. Like most of Flanagan's Netflix horrors, family tragedy plays a big part in the storytelling, which begs the question: How does "Usher" stack up when compared to what's come before? That's where this list comes in handy, as I've set out to rank Flanagan's five Netflix shows from worst to best.

Henry James is a popular storyteller to adapt, with numerous versions of his works presented in practically every medium known to man. Much of this is to say: “Do we really need another adaptation of ‘Turn of the Screw’?” The answer is, yes, especially as it’s laid out in Mike Flanagan’s new Netflix series “The Haunting of Bly Manor.”
The Gothic romance doesn’t just discuss the nature of grief, love, and toxic relationships. It’s also a meditation on how the world of adaptation can open opportunities for marginalized communities the original author would have left out.

Actors T’Nia Miller and Kamal Khan were not familiar with James’ work, but they all walked away with different appreciations for the text. When Miller was offered the role of Bly housekeeper Hannah Grose she watched “The Innocents,” the 1961 film adaptation of James’ “The Turn of the Screw.

Warning: This post contains spoilers for The Haunting of Bly Manor.
As Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor likes to remind us, a ghost can be many things: a memory, a desire, an actual specter — and by halfway through the Netflix anthology’s second season, all of those things are dogging Peter Quint.

As someone who is a big fan of Henry James’ work, and also counts The Innocents as one of the greatest horror movies of all time (you can read my tribute to Jack Clayton’s film Here), I have been eagerly anticipating Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Bly Manor adaptation for Netflix, as I was extremely curious about how this story would parlay into a nine-episode series. Thankfully, Bly Manor ended up surpassing any lofty expectations I might have had going into this new show, proving that even after countless versions of The Turn of the Screw over the decades, there are still ways to take this story in new and exciting directions.
While it may not necessarily be quite as heavy on the horror as The Haunting of Hill House was, Bly Manor is still an incredible feat in storytelling, and everyone involved with the series should be...

Arriving in theaters this weekend is director Floria Sigismondi’s The Turning, a modernized adaptation of Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw. The story is centered around Kate (Mackenzie Davis), who has been hired to be a caretaker to two children named Flora (Brooklynn Prince) and Miles (Finn Wolfhard), but when she arrives to their familial estate, Kate begins to realize that things aren’t exactly what they seem, and they all might be in danger from the ghosts of the past, both literal and figurative.
During a recent press day for the film, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Davis, who kicked all kinds of ass in Terminator: Dark Fate last year, about the daunting challenges of taking on this classic tale for modern audiences. Davis also discussed her character Kate, collaborating with Sigismondi, and how this story explores the dangers and lasting effects of not dealing with trauma.
