- Sarah Jane, Luke, and Clyde visit Lavender Lawns Rest Home in the country, Clyde having heard rumors about a mysterious ghostly nun prowling around at night from one of the residents, a friend of his grandmother's. Mrs. Randall tells them about the sightings, while another resident stares at Luke through the window. At the Jackson house, Chrissie barges in with her suitcase and tells Alan that her boyfriend is acting possessive, so she plans on staying with them for a few days. Alan is annoyed, but Maria is pleased to have her mother around. Clyde gets stuck doing chores for Mrs. Randall, and Sarah Jane speaks with the caretaker of the rest home, Mrs. Cribbins. Cribbins dismisses the claims of a ghost and tells Sarah to look for a story elsewhere, but Sarah Jane is skeptical of her intentions. Outside, Luke finds the woman he saw through the window earlier. She seems to be senile and living in the past, but introduces herself as Bea Nelson-Stanley. She returns to the present and tells Luke she has seen "unusual people" before, and asks for his help. She shows him a secret hiding spot in a tree and pulls out an old box containing a beautiful talisman, which glows upon opening. She tells Luke to take it and keep it secret, and not let "her" have it under any circumstances. Before he can ask questions, she loses her memory of the conversation. The three regroup at the car and Sarah Jane says she is suspicious of the home, especially Mrs. Cribbins, who watches them through binoculars.
Chrissie offers to go out with Maria, who plans to meet up with Sarah Jane. Chrissie insults Sarah Jane and Luke as strange, which upsets Maria. Alan attempts to comfort her, but Maria's anger about their divorce comes out and she storms off. Mrs. Cribbins goes to St. Agnes Abby and meets with the head nun, Sister Helena. She tells them about Sarah Jane's visit and that Bea gave the talisman they seek to her son. Helena is unimpressed by Cribbins' results, and sends her to see the Abbess, who is extremely old and covered by a hood. When Cribbins enters, the Abbess lifts her veil. In the attic, Mr. Smith detects the talisman Luke has, and he admits that Bea asked him to keep it a secret, as the mysterious nun is looking for it. Mr. Smith begins analyzing the artifact, deeming it alien. Maria bursts in, seeing she is upset, Sarah Jane takes her along back to Lavender Lawn to talk to Bea and hopefully learn more. Mrs. Randall introduces them and tells them Bea and her husband Edgar were archaeologists in their youth, but Bea is going in and out of euphoria. She mentions the Sontarans, a race of aliens Sarah Jane is familiar with, and Sarah Jane realizes that Bea and Edgar have fought aliens before. When Randall mentions the old talisman, Bea is snapped back to the present and suddenly fearful.
At the house, Sister Helena knocks on the door and asks the boys about their encounter at the old folks home. Luke, still learning the finer points of discretion, lets slip about the talisman, to Clyde's chagrin. Helena threatens them, but Alan comes by looking for Maria and she leaves. The boys decide to get back in on the case by going to Lavender Lawns to tell Sarah Jane and Maria about the episode. After Mrs. Randall leaves, Sarah Jane asks Bea about the talisman. Bea tells them that her husband dug it up during an archaeological dig in Syria and gave it to her, unaware of it's significance at the time. She tells them they mustn't let the sisterhood have it, as they are protecting a gorgon. Sarah Jane and Maria do research, finding ancient myths about three gorgons. Bea must think at least one is still alive. En route to the rest home, the boys are once again accosted by the nuns. They refuse to cooperate, and Luke is kidnapped by the sisters and taken to the Abby. Clyde calls Sarah Jane, and they go to find him. Sarah Jane uses a fake ID to get inside while Clyde and Maria sneak in to try and find their friend. Unfortunately, they run right into the Gorgon, the Abbess. The sisters also see through Sarah Jane's ruse and lock her in the library. Clyde, Maria, and Luke are all brought to her, and Sister Helena tells her they just wanted her attention. She explains that three gorgons came to earth thousands of years prior by the talisman, and have been served by the sisterhood ever since. One was killed by the Greeks in ancient days, another was killed by Bea and Edgar Nelson-Stanley decades ago when they tried to reclaim the talisman. Only the third remains, and Helena claims the old alien only wants to go back to her homeworld to die and asks Sarah Jane to give them the talisman. Having no choice, Sarah Jane agrees, but the nuns keep Luke and Clyde as collateral. Srah Jane and Maria go with the sisters back to number 13 and retrieve the talisman, but Sarah Jane threatens to destroy it unless the nuns release the boys. Angered, the gorgon lifts its hood. The nuns grab the talisman as Sarah Jane shields Maria from its gaze, but Alan walks in looking for his daughter, and upon seeing the gorgon's face, is instantly turned to stone.
