- Maria and Clyde run from the Slitheen Carl as Luke manages to evade the headmaster and eventually joins them. At Coldfire HQ, Sarah Jane stuns Janine by spraying her with perfume, which hurts her keen sense of smell. Sarah Jane escapes and heads for the school. The kids find the doors to the school locked as Sarah Jane calls and they update eachother. Clyde stuns Jeffrey with deodorant, and they regroup as Sarah Jane arrives and unlocks the doors, relocking them to trap the Slitheen. Carl demands his hunt be resumed, and is consoled by his father, Jeffrey. They decide to use the equation and enact their plan that night. Jeffrey and the headmaster bask in the idea of returning victorious to their home planet Raxacoricofallapatorious and take it over from the other alien families, as well as evading the intergalactic police.
At Sarah Jane's house, Clyde wants answers. Maria tries to get him to leave, but he insists on being let in. Sarah Jane reads up on the outcast alien family in the attic, remembering a friend telling her about "Slitheen in Downing Street". They infiltrate by hiding in human skin, but the compression technology results in the constant gas exchange. Maria brings Clyde up, which Sarah Jane reluctantly allows. They ask Sarah's talking computer, Mr. Smith, to display all of the Coldfire sites across the world. Clyde notices that they are all build on underground railway networks. Linked together they create a giant capacitor, and Luke realizes he gave Jeffrey the equation the Slitheen need to make their plan work. At the school, the Slitheen link up and prepare to run the capacitor. Maria asks why the candles went out if it only steals electricity, and Mr. Smith tells her that the machine is capable of converting all energy, including heat and light, into storable electricity. The giant machine also causes cellular decay which makes the food go off. Maria realizes the Slitheen need all of the sites to work simultaneously for it to work, and Luke says that if they can get into the control room and reset the system, he can use the sonic lipstick to shut it down safely. Just then, news reports start to flood in about massive power cuts across America, and heading toward them. Sarah Jane asks for all the information Mr. Smith has on the Raxacoricofallapatorians, and he tells them the species' biometrics, but is shut down by the power blackout before he can give their weaknesses. Without the sonic lipstick their chances of shutting down the machine are slim, but Clyde remembers Jeffrey's reaction to his lunch the other day. The deduce that the Slitheen are hyper sensitive to vinegar, being calcium-based life forms. They gather all they can and run for the school, as the Slitheen complete the circuit and turn out the sun itself.
The group make it back to the school and are faced by the headmaster, now in his true Slitheen form. Maria and Clyde hold him off with vinegar spray bottles, but Clyde's bottle gets stuck and they are cornered by the headmaster. He mocks Maria and the human race for having no real fight in them, and Maria responds by taking the cap off and dousing him with vinegar. The headmaster explodes into goop, and the other Slitheen feel something is wrong. Jeffrey calls in the other Slitheen operators, who teleport in for backup. Luke takes Sarah Jane to the control room, but they make it inside only to be caught by the Slitheen. Jeffrey tells them the capacitor will store all the energy the earth has to offer, leaving it a dead ball of ice. They plan to sell the energy to get rich, but also as revenge for the Slitheen killed in Downing Street several years earlier by the Doctor. Luke tells the Slitheen their plan won't work, as the equation he gave them did not account for the energy of the sun. The machine appears to overload, and Clyde and Maria burst in with their bottles refilled with water, but the Slitheen easy see through the trick. Jeffrey's resets the system and has Luke "fix" the problem, but Sarah Jane throws him the sonic lipstick, working again now the the machine is off, and he makes his way to the capacitor and destroys it. The room begins to explode as Sarah and the kids make it out. Most of the Slitheen get away, but Jeffrey and Carl are trapped. Jeffrey pleads for his son's life, but they are both apparently killed before Sarah Jane can save them. They go home and Sarah Jane contacts UNIT to have the clean up the remaining stations around the world. Chrissie and Alan retrieve Maria, and Sarah Jane tells Clyde about her history and explains what they do. Clyde tells Sarah Jane she should let Luke call her 'mum', and Sarah Jane admits she does not know how to do so. They ask Mr. Smith to circulate a rumor explaining the days strange events to the public. Clyde declares Maria and Luke as friends, and congratulates Luke on saving the world. Maria walks Clyde to the bus stop, and Sarah Jane also praises Luke for overcoming his mistake and setting it right, and apologizes for sending him and Maria in unprepared. Luke calls Sarah Jane his mother, and the two happily accept their new familial roles.
