The latest McU-set series is the first to come with a rating of TV-ma thanks to a violent and bloody premise.
At 9 p.m. Et on Tuesday, Jan. 9, Disney+ and Hulu — for the first time ever —released all five episodes of its latest Marvel television series “Echo.” However, some viewers might have run into issues watching it, if they hadn’t already updated their content management settings. By default, Disney+ profiles have a content ratings threshold set to TV-14, giving account holders the ability to raise and lower it for individual profiles. As “Echo” is rated TV-ma (for mature audiences) — harkening back to the Marvel Television series that aired on Netflix — MCU fans will need to adjust their settings if they haven’t done so already.

Peyton Reed's 2023 superhero film "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" saw the title heroes (Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly), and a few compatriots, using an extraordinary sci-fi device to shrink down so infinitesimally small they enter a microscopic dimension called the Quantum Realm. In the Quantum Realm, they find a whole civilization of bizarre humanoid and non-humanoid creatures, as well as the evil rising empire of a villainous tyrant named Kang (the recently-fired Jonathan Majors). Kang had been imprisoned in the Quantum Realm, and if he can escape, he would cause mayhem in the normal-sized world. "Quantumania" was expensive to make and wasn't terribly well-received, marking a definite downturn in the seemingly unending success of the long-running Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Seeing as "Quantumania" was the 31st feature film to come out of the MCU, a pattern was already in place, and Marvel Studios remained as secretive as usual in protecting...

Earlier this year, it was announced that New Line Cinema had come out the winner in a bidding war over the haunted house project Occupant, which would be based on a 39-page short story by new writer Victor Sweetser. Now that the writers strike has come to an end, The Hollywood Reporter has discovered that New Line Cinema and producer Zach Cregger, the writer/director of last year’s Barbarian (watch it Here), have found the writer who will flesh Sweetser’s story out into a screenplay: Blair Butler, a former writer and on-air personality for shows like Attack of the Show who has gone on to work on several genre films. Her previous writing credits include The Invitation (the vampire movie that starred Nathalie Emmanuel), Polaroid, and Hell Fest. Butler was also a producer on the Marvel-inspired TV series Helstrom.
The Occupant purchase was part of Cregger’s year-long winning streak.

In one of its first development moves since the end of the writers strike, New Line has hired Blair Butler to write Occupant, the adaptation of a short story by Victor Sweetser.
Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind the critically adored 2022 horror movie Barbarian, is producing the supernatural thriller with frequent collaborator Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon and Scott Glassgold of Ground Control — the latter specializes in the horror short-story adaptation business — are also producing, as is John Poliquin.
The project was the subject of a heated bidding war in February with New Line, the Warner Bros. division that dominates the studio horror space, winning it with a six-figure outright buy.
New Line is keeping the logline locked in the basement, but the story is a spin on the traditional haunted house tale. In this case, when a mysterious old house is moved to a small town,...

“Snowpiercer” is changing showrunners going into the show’s fourth season.
Paul Zbyszewski — whose past credits include “Lost,” “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” and “Helstrom” — will take the reins of the TNT series from Graeme Manson. Manson famously took over showrunning duties on the drama show after original series creator Josh Friedman and TNT parted ways over “creative differences” before Season 1.
In addition, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” alum Clark Gregg and Michael Aronov are both joining the series in Season 4. The news comes the same day as the Season 3 finale. Production is now underway on Season 4.

With the arrival of Disney+, Marvel Television took a decidedly more mainstream turn. Gone were the more offbeat, second-tier, or downright bizarre offerings centered on characters that would likely never find their way to a big-screen feature film.. Instead, we suddenly got series like WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki, which not only focused on established figures from the MCU but also frequently tied directly back to the adventures taking place at the local multiplex.
This isn’t an entirely bad thing—after all, WandaVision was one of the best shows we saw on television last year—but it has meant we’ve had to say goodbye to many familiar properties in order to get there. George R.R. Martin sent a raven Wednesday with updates on his highly anticipated new projects on his blog.
The 73-year old fantasy author behind “Game of Thrones” (and creative contributor to the just-dropped “Elden Ring” video game) cast some light on the numerous “GoT” prequel series that are in the works. Perhaps more importantly to his O.G. fans, he confirmed that he is still plugging away at his long-delayed novel “The Winds of Winter,” the sixth of seven planned doorstopper books in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series from which “Game of Thrones” and the entire Westeros mythos derives.
“Winds of Winter,” which was originally due to be published in 2016, is still coming, he says, but as a way of excusing himself for its absence, he wrote that Westeros is bigger than just one project now. But working in that world is his “number one priority,” he said.

It might be shocking to see Disney+ host The Punisher, an antihero who’s been known to vanquish his enemies with a sledgehammer, but that shift may signal something even more significant. Once upon a time, Disney+ was supposed to be the family-friendly streamer and Hulu its more mature and complex cousin. With R-rated content, Disney+ changes its branding barrier — and that may also reflect a change in Hulu’s future as a standalone streaming service.

Lower the flags in Hell’s Kitchen to half-mast. It’s the end of an era.
Ever since Disney+ canceled its suite of Defenders shows on Netflix, fans have feared the day when Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and their teamup effort The Defenders would be removed from the massive streaming service. Well, thanks to some eagle-eyed Netflix viewers, we now know that day is unfortunately nigh.
Per the “Renew Daredevil” Twitter account, streams of any of the Defenders series comes along with the watermarked message that “This show is available isn’t March 1st.”...

It's hard to imagine a world of Marvel television series before Disney+ entered all of our lives, but yes, this mysterious time exists, and there were a lot of really wonderful shows that came out of it. Based on the Marvel comic of the same name, "Helstrom" was a series about siblings Daimon (Tom Austen) and Ana (Sydney Lemmon), the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer. The duo's relationship is complicated, to say the least, but the two join forces to hunt down humanity's most despicable monsters and make sure they can't hurt anyone ever again. Unfortunately, the Hulu series...

Following the cancelation of Hulu‘s Marvel shows “The Runaways” and “Helstrom,” and Kevin Feige taking over Marvel TV (shuttering it in favor of a new slate of Marvel Studios-produced shows at Disney+), it’s been thought, well that’s the end of that, right? Lest you forget “M.O.D.O.K.,” and what appears to be one avenue of Marvel that Feige seems ok with Hulu still-running with: R-Rated, adult-oriented Marvel animation.

Marvel has had a successful run of TV dramas on Disney+ including WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki.
But could the comic book giant broaden its output across the Disney family with more series on sister platform Hulu? That’s certainly the intimation from Hulu head of scripted content Jordan Helman.
The streamer’s most recent Marvel live-action series Helstrom was canceled after one season and two of the four planned animated series – Howard The Duck and Tigra & Dazzler – did not move forward.
But Helman told Deadline, “Marvel continues to be an incredibly important partner and one of the biggest generators of content within the Disney ecosystem so we’re excited about the possibility of what may lie in the future with regards to the Hulu/Marvel relationship.”
He admitted that he hasn’t engaged in conversations with Marvel Studios and its chief Kevin Feige, but added,...

One of the “Game of Thrones” prequels in development at HBO, “10,000 Ships,” has found its writer.
Amanda Segel is set to pen the project, Variety has confirmed. “10,000 Ships” is one of several “Game of Thrones” projects in the works at HBO. The show would follow Princess Nymeria, who journeyed with the Rhoynar to Dorne and married Lord Mors Martell.
HBO declined to comment.
Segel’s past credits include “Person of Interest,” “The Good Wife,” “The Mist,” and “Helstrom.” She is repped by WME, Anonymous Content and Myman Greenspan.
Among the other “Game of Thrones” projects is “9 Voyages,” which would center on Lord Corlys Velaryon — known as the “Sea Snake” and head of House Velaryon, husband to Rhaenys Targaryen — on the Sea Snake vessel. The most well-known nautical adventurer in all of Westeros, Lord Corlys built a house even wealthier than the Lannisters and claims the largest navy in the world.

Exclusive: Princess Nymeria has found her chronicler.
Amanda Segel, co-exec producer on Hulu’s Helstrom and Person of Interest, has been tapped to write one of the Game of Thrones spinoffs.
Deadline understands that Segel is tackling the 10,000 Ships project, which is one of three spinoffs that we revealed were in the works at HBO. HBO declined to comment.
The drama is expected to follow the journey made by warrior queen Princess Nymeria and the surviving members of the Rhoynars, who traveled from Essos to Dorne following their defeat by the Valyrian Freehold in the Second Spice War.
This migration took place around 1,000 years before the events depicted in the A Song of Ice and Fire novels. Arya Stark, played by Maisie Williams, named her direwolf after Nymeria.
Segel’s past writing credits also include CBS’ The Good Wife, on which she was a producer, and as an exec producer...

Disney Plus has made good on its plans to offer general entertainment service Star in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, giving the company a new streaming outlet for more grown-up programming.
Also today, Disney+ with Star launched in Singapore, the first market where Disney+ has launched with the new Star offering. Eastern Europe, Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea are due to follow later this year. After its initial launch in November 2019, Disney+ is now in dozens of territories.
In Europe, the Star service will cost €8.99 per month or €89.90 per year, with a similar pricing in the other launch markets.
With Hulu only a domestic operation for the time being, the revamp and expansion of Star gives Disney a valuable global streaming outlet for a wider range of content, especially what it produces in-house. Kevin Feige has used his downtime during the Coronavirus pandemic to make himself busier than ever, with the continued expansion of his Marvel Cinematic Universe accelerating rapidly over the next several years. We might not have seen anything from the franchise since Spider-Man: Far From Home was released last July, but that’s all about to change in a big way.

Since Kevin Feige became Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer, he’s disregarded every Marvel Television show from official canon, with his cinematic universe’s proper expansion onto the small screen set to begin in a little over two weeks when WandaVision premieres on Disney Plus.
That means Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the entire roster of Netflix series, Agent Carter, Inhumans, Runaways, Cloak & Dagger and Helstrom may as well have never happened, and in the case of the latter, that’s even more true after it quietly premiered on Hulu back in October and then got canceled after a single season. Over the last dozen years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has run the same playbook over and over again to great success, but the franchise can’t keep repeating itself forever. So far, though, Kevin Feige has done a superb job of coating the projects in an individual sheen that overcomes the sense of predictability and formula that seeps into the story, from Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘s political intrigue to Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s high school comdedy via Ant-Man‘s breezy heist capers.
Looking ahead, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings veers into martial arts territory, Thor: Love and Thunder is shaping up to be Flash Gordon on a $200 million budget and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is primed to dive into full-blown psychedelia, but they’re all still going to be superhero movies. It seems, though, that Marvel may be branching out a bit more in the near future,...

Though there's still plenty of evil to vanquish, Daimon and Ana are out of work. Hulu has cancelled the Helstrom TV series so, there won't be a second season of the fantasy horror series.
Based on Marvel Comics characters, the Helstrom TV show stars Tom Austen, Sydney Lemmon, Elizabeth Marvel, Robert Wisdom, Ariana Guerra, June Carryl, and Alain Uy. In the story, Daimon (Austen) and Ana Helstrom (Lemmon) are the offspring of a mysterious and powerful serial killer. Working together, with a complicated dynamic, they track down the worst of humanity — each with their own attitude and skills.

Bad news for all you Helstrom–heads. Hulu has canceled the Marvel series after one season – a season you probably didn’t even realize had premiered already. The series, which drew on characters from Marvel Comics, is (or I guess we should say was) the last of the lingering non-Disney Marvel TV shows. The series followed “Daimon and […]

Days after Disney announced plans for 10 new Marvel series for Disney+, its other streaming service, Hulu, has confirmed the cancellation of its live-action Marvel series Helstrom.
The move was fully expected. Helstrom comes from the now-defunct Marvel Television and is not part of Marvel Studios’ TV strategy of series integrated into the McU that run exclusively on Disney+.
As part of a multi-project deal with Marvel Television, Hulu also has two animated series that appear to be on track, at least for now.
2019-20 TV Renewals And Cancellations
The 10-part Helstrom followed Daimon (Tom Austen) and Ana Helstrom (Sydney Lemmon), the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer, in their complicated dynamic as they track down the worst of humanity — each with their own attitude and skills.
Helstrom was created for television and executive produced by Paul Zbyszewski along with Karim Zreik and Jeph Loeb. It was...

Not so Marvel-ous news for Hulu’s Helstrom: The recently launched drama has been cancelled after one season, Variety reports.
The hour-long supernatural series from Marvel Television and ABC Studios was based on the Marvel comic of the same name, and centered on brother and sister Daimon (The Royals‘ Tom Austen) and Ana (Fear the Walking Dead‘s Sydney Lemmon), two members of an estranged family that has seen its share of demons — both emotional and literal. All 10 episodes dropped on Oct. 16. (TVLine readers gave the series premiere an average grade of “B+.”)

Helstrom will not be raising hell at Hulu again.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the Marvel drama has been canceled after a single season.
The news means that Marvel's live-action TV series are now exclusively airing on Disney+, and all are now set in the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.
News of the cancellation is not that surprising.
Hulu previously cut ties on Runaways after three seasons, and nixed the Ghost Rider TV series, which was set to be a part of the same universe as Helstrom.
Tom Austen, Sydney Lemmon, Elizabeth Marvel, Robert Wisdom, June Carryl, Ariana Guerra, and Alain Uy starred on the series, which was touted as Marvel's first foray into the world of terror.
