A great episode.

Out for a walk in the woods, Scruffy finds a body buried underneath a tree, Sandra is reluctant to take the case on, as UCOS is having an audit.

Such a good episode, this really does have all of the elements, a cracking story, a shed load of atmosphere, and some terrific acting.

I loved the case, the crime was a fascinating one, it really did feel like a proper cold case, unlike recent episodes, this really was an old crime. The humour was well balanced, Scruffy again proving to be an amusing doggo, and of course Strickland and the audit caused a few laughs.

The ending does come as a real surprise, a revelation I hadn't seen coming.

Phillip Jackson and Pippa Haywood are both great, Selina Cadell however is an absolute joy to watch, I adored her scenes between her and Brian, with Esther away, it felt like there was a little bit of flirtation between the pair.

Great episode, 9/10.

Body? What body?

Brian finds a body, it gets reported in the news, body turns out to be medieval. Seems perfect for UCOS, but Strickland calls them off anyway, and has them work on an audit. But after the news went out, some people called Brian, seeming a bit too interested in the body, and UCOS investigates if there are real crimes to look into.

The result is a couple investigations, both of which are pretty simple, but give some good entertainment and are fun to watch anyway. Plus we get to see UCOs approach the audit, which goes about as organized and smoothly as you'd expect.

This is also when we hear the Last Man Standing nickname for Gerry, which comes back in season 12 and sets his character as seeming corrupt, but not actually being so.

Selina Cadell shines in this episode

Warning: Spoilers
Selina Cadell is fantastic in Doc Martin, and she's exceptional here, and her character develops a close bond with Brian over the finding of buried bones in a moor. Brian's wife Helen is away so I guess Brian has time to develop the friendship without any irritant third party if you know what I mean.

Andrea Lowe, who later appeared in DCI Banks, is excellent in a supporting role.

The UCOS team gel as a professional family, and it's a pleasure to always watch New Tricks.

Don't bury this treasure
TheLittleSongbird22 January 2018
Have always been a big fan of detective/mystery shows from a fairly young age, well since starting secondary school.

'Inspector Morse', 'A Touch of Frost', 'Midsomer Murders' (in its prime), 'Law and Order', 'Inspector George Gently', 'Criminal Minds', 'Murder She Wrote', you name them to name a few. 'New Tricks' has also been a favourite from the start (despite not being the same without the original cast in recent years). Although it can be corny at times (in an endearing sort of way) it has always been perfect for helping me relax in the evenings. Something that was needed during all the hard times endured in school.

Season 4's previous episodes were all wonderful. So is "Buried Treasure", it really is a treasure of an episode that is a must see for 'New Tricks' fans and not to be ignored. The classic rapport between the team is there, as is the fun case solving and a diverting mystery.

Visually, "Buried Treasure" is slick and stylish as ever. The music is a good fit and the theme song (sung with gusto by none other by Dennis Waterman himself) is one of the catchiest for any detective/mystery show and of any show in the past fifteen years or so.

Writing is intelligent, thought-provoking and classy, while also being very funny and high up in the entertainment value. This is all mixed adeptly with a seriousness without being overly so that it doesn't feel like 'New Tricks'. The story is fun, diverting and keeps one guessing.

A huge part of 'New Tricks' appeal is the chemistry between the four leads and their performances. The chemistry is so easy going and charming with a little tension.

One of the show's biggest delights is Alun Armstrong, achieves a perfect balance of funny comic timing and touching pathos which was maintained all the way up to his final episode. It is also lovely here to see his role in the team and skills appreciated more all the time. James Bolam's Jack is the quietest, most sensible (mostly) and most composed of the team, with a tragic personal life that Bolam portrays very touchingly without any overwrought-ness.

The only woman on the team, Amanda Redman more than holds her own in what is essentially the boss role of the four. Dennis Waterman brings some nice levity without unbalancing things.

Anthony Calf is now fully settled in and Selina Caddell and Phillip Jackson's guest turns are far from disappointing, Caddell especially is indeed exceptional.

All in all, a treasure. 10/10 Bethany Cox
