Fashion, East-West Asian identities, corporate espionage and romance are on the agenda in “Morning, Paris!,” a new mini-series project being pitched at Series Mania by veteran filmmaker Quentin Lee.
“’Morning, Paris!’ is a heartfelt comedy about a young modern Bipoc Canadian woman discovering herself in the most romantic city in the world,” says Lee. “Or put another way, it is a limited television series about an aspiring female fashion designer from Vancouver who ends up in Paris Fashion week with a very unlikely companion because she wants to spy on her boss on whom she has a crush. It’s ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ meets Robert Atman’s ‘Prêt-à-Porter’ with the sensibility of Woody Allen’s ‘Midnight in Paris’.”

The latest short film by Quentin Lee, On Halloween, pays homage to spooky classics of the past with a few clever twists of its own. Lee has made a variety of features, ranging from the emotional drama Ethan Mao to the teen trauma of White Frog to the fizzy romance of The People I've Slept With. He's explored horror before in his graphic novel Campus Ghost Story and this year's The Unbidden, and On Halloween delves again into terror territory. Candy Cheung stars as a babysitter and Jerry Hernandez (Ethan Mao) is her boyfriend who visits her when she's 'on the job' caring for an infant, played by Quentin Lee's son Junyi Casper Lee. Something happens, and to say it's a bit unnerving is only...

Quentin Lee began his filmmaking career more than 20 years ago and it's still impossible to pigeonhole him. He's tackled a winning variety of human-sized stories in a variety of settings and an intriguing mix of genres, from the emotional angst of Ethan Mao to the intimate drama of White Frog to the romantic comedy of The People I've Slept With to the spooky fun of The Unbidden. Beyond his feature-length efforts, he's also made a slew of short movies and his upcoming next short sounds quite intriguing. Here is how Mr. Lee describes it: I wrote the short script On Halloween about a scary and unexpected night of a babysitter to star my friend Candy Cheung (a talented actress whom I want to work...

With Halloween approaching, it's a good season to think about psychological thrillers and dark secrets, which means it's the perfect time to consider backing The Unbidden, an Asian-American horror psycho thriller from director Quentin Lee. Lee has forged a path that is distinctly his own in the independent film world, most notably his angry debut, Ethan Mao, in contrast to his tart rom-com The People I've Slept With and the mournful, compassionate family drama White Frog. But somewhere in there he also wrote a terrific graphic novel, Campus Ghost Story -- read more about it here -- featuring a twisting and pleasantly mind-bending trio of haunted tales. Now he's applying his directorial touch to Narhee Ahn's original script, which sounds like it has some new twists of...

We pay tribute to the actor James Shigeta, famous for his roles in Flower Drum Song, Die Hard, and a legion other turns on stage and TV.
For a generation of moviegoers, James Shigeta will be immediately recognisable as Joseph Takagi, the Nakatomi Corporation boss who's ruthlessly despatched by Alan Rickman's sneering villain in the 1988 hit, Die Hard. But there was so much more to Shigeta than John McTiernan's action classic - that appearance was, in fact, but one of many in a long and fruitful career on stage, television and the silver screen.
Born in Hawaii in 1933, Shigeta embarked on a singing career after winning first place in a TV show called Original Amateur Hour. His subsequent success was such that a lengthy run of appearances in Tokyo musicals left him with the nickname, The Frank Sinatra of Japan.

Quentin Lee is one of my favorite independent filmmakers, in part because he refuses to be tied down to any particular genre. He's made a potent family drama (Ethan Mao), a slick-but-sincere romantic comedy (The People I've Slept With), and a coming-of-age film (White Frog), as well as short films and documentaries. Now he's announced his next project, The English Major, described as a Canadian chiller. In brief, The English Major is "a more literary version of Scream set on a college campus ... a thriller about a sophomore becoming the prime suspect of campus serial murders reminiscent to those committed by a dead serial killer 13 years ago." Devery Jacobs (Rhymes for Young Ghouls) (pictured above) and newcomer Aidan Parker (right) have been cast in key roles....

It's so rare that American movies give us hot and sexy Asians who sleep with other hot and sexy Asians that The People I've Slept With (out on DVD this week from Maya Entertainment) often feels like something of a revelation. Add to that two lead characters -- a woman and a gay man -- who are promiscuous without feeling guilty about it, and the film feels refreshingly distinct from most of the rom-coms being churned out these days.

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"Meskada" (2010)
Directed by Josh Sternfeld
Released by Anchor Bay Entertainment
When this thriller premiered at Tribeca this past spring, Alison Willmore wrote, "the second film from writer/director Josh Sternfeld ("Winter Solstice") has ambitions reaching beyond being a straightforward police procedural," though critics, including her, were mixed about the end result. Nick Stahl and Rachel Nichols star as small-town sleuths who investigate a botched home invasion case that claims the life of a young child in an affluent community and enflames class divisions when the main suspects are from the poorer community nearby. Grace Gummer, Meryl Streep's second daughter to go into the family profession, makes her film debut.

Three major releases are competing for your dollar at the multiplex this weekend, although it's unclear whether any of them will ultimately find an audience. The marketing for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World has been going into overdrive this past week, but it still does not seem like it's attracting much interest outside of the hardcore comic book fans. Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables, meanwhile, has assembled an impressive line-up of action stars both new and old, but its old school sensibility and R-rating may keep it from cashing in. Then there is Eat Pray Love starring Julia Roberts, which is hoping to capture a completely different demographic despite poor reviews. In limited release, we also have the Australian crime thriller Animal Kingdom starring Guy Pearce, and Tales from Earthsea, an animated film from Hayao Miyazaki's son Goro. Writer/producer Koji Steven Sakai left no stone unturned when it came to getting his film The People I've Slept With made. Opting for locations including his mother's house and his office, Sakai, alongside director Quentin Lee and co-producer Stanley Yung, set out to make a high quality low budget film. A sexy rom-com about a promiscuous woman on a hunt to find the man who got her pregnant, The People I've Slept With has made quite a mark on the festival circuit, premiering at the 2009 Hawaii International Film Festival and numerous other fests including Sao Paulo International Film Festival, Golden Horse Film Festival, San Francisco International Asian American Film, and Outfest Fusion. The film was also the Centerpiece screening at the 2010 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. The film opens theatrically in New York,...

The first 15 minutes of The People I've Slept With were the most uncomfortable, in your face moments I've seen in a movie in a long time - and not in a good way with sub-par acting and a story too shallow to believe. But after getting over this difficult hurdle, the remaining 74 minutes are full of beyond hilarious situations, with an intimate look at love of all forms, and over-the-top characters you'll grow to appreciate. Yes, after getting over the film's self-expectation to feature raunchy sex scenes and lust, there actually is a sexy love story about responsibility, taking risks, and most of all, independence.
The film follows Angela (Karin Anna Cheung), an Asian American, self-proclaimed "slut" who takes pictures of her lovers and creates sex "baseball cards" (stats and all) to remember her conquests. Angela's rowdy lifestyle comes to a halt when her pregnancy test comes back positive and...

It is July. For me this means gearing up for my annual marathon movie event, the Asian Film Festival of Dallas. The organizers have been tossing hints at titles out via facebook and Twitter, but yesterday they finally let the cats out of the bag.
This year Affd is screening 30+ features as well as their usual shorts programs. I'm pretty sure this may be their biggest festival ever in terms of variety. The schedule looks great, with some really awesome titles and some surprises (which are almost always my favorite part!). Affd has a newly redesigned website that makes it easy to explore the titles, watch trailers, make your own schedule, and learn about the events. Facebook friends and Twitter followers are always the first to know about cool events and news, so be sure to check them out there as well as the official site for all the latest!

Allison Strong, Union City, N.J."April showers bring May flowers." Imagine that phrase was a song that summed up the rainbow highs and lows of my past year. Press play. On April 30, 2009, I lost my grandmother—one of the biggest loves of my life and the Auntie Mame of my small family. A few weeks before Christmas 2008, she suffered two strokes that left her completely paralyzed, and six months later a third one took her from us. Mamita, as we all lovingly called her, was a youthful 94 years old. Now stop and press repeat. On April 9, I lost my 13-year-old sheepdog-terrier mutt, Magic, to prostate cancer. We had known since July that his cancer was aggressive, but since he outlived the local vet's expectations, we shrugged it off as a misdiagnosis. But after an impromptu visit to my veterinarian cousin Marcy in Brooklyn the first week of April, my...

As the Academy Awards stretch on to the wee hours, here are three quick recommendations for graphic novels that are cinematic in nature yet are intrinsically literary and artistic, spilling over beyond the printed page.
Olympus. Not to minimize the fine script by Nathan Edmondson, but it's Christian Ward's sprawling, extravagant art work that caught my eye in the first issue. Now that the four-issue run has been collected together in trade form by Image, it's great fun to glory in the pictures. Yet a second reading also increases my appreciation for the tale itself: two brothers granted immortality by Zeus are still serving as his bounty hunters, hauling fugitives back to hell. A great balance between words and art, though I do tend to drift off while staring at those magnificent squiggly lines. The trade includes an introduction by Bryan J.L. Glass, a foreword by Edmondson, variant covers,...
