Most viewers had no idea how dangerous this episode was....
"Legend of Lake Titicaca" is among the most dangerous episodes that the Calypso crew ever made...or at least, SOME of the crew. The lucky ones were left behind and only 17 took this journey to the inland lake on the border of Bolivia and Peru. I say lucky because such diving is dangerous today...and back in the 60s and 70s, folks only learned how to do dangerous dives by trying them and hoping they were successful. Diving at more than two miles in elevation is very tricky and very exhausting. Interestingly, though, is that the divers found the diving easier than just trying to breath on land at this elevation! A good old fashioned case of the bends easily could have resulted!
As for the lake itself, it was NOT full of fish like Cousteau had assumed. Instead, fish were sparse and dying and what were thriving were some very, very, very weird toads! Additionally, Incan ruins above and below the water made this a very interesting an unusual episode. Well worth seeing despite the lack of fish.
