The TV academy has honored the work of voice actors nearly every year since 1992 and has bestowed separate Emmys for Best Narrator and Best Voice-Over Performance annually since 2014. Included among those recognized in the former category this year are a three-time champion, a pair of returning nominees and two newcomers (one of whom is a Grammy-winning former U.S. president).
Historian David Attenborough (“The Mating Game”) is seeking his fourth Emmy victory against challengers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (“Black Patriots: Heroes of the Civil War”), W. Kamau Bell (“We Need to Talk About Cosby”), Lupita Nyong’o (“Serengeti II”) and Barack Obama (“Our Great National Parks”). He already bested Abdul-Jabbar and Nyong’o in 2020, but can he do it again, especially with a heavy hitter like Obama in the mix? Let’s take a look at what makes each of these contenders worthy of the honor. Be sure to make your Emmy predictions...

Kidscreen Live Delayed Due To Omicron
The live element of Kidscreen 2022 in Miami has become the latest Omicron casualty, pushed back to July due to the “impact of the variant on the industry’s ability to travel internationally and meet in person.” The expo, which was due to take place from February 14 to February 17, will push on with its Kidscreen Summit Virtual in March and all attendees registered for the live event will be able to attend. “We recognize that it’s not the same experience as meeting in person, but our hope is that it still helps people make and maintain industry connections in Q1,” said Jocelyn Christie, Kidscreen’s SVP & Publisher. The rescheduled dates for the live offering are July 18 to July 21. Kidscreen becomes the latest big TV trade event to be impacted by Omicron, following NATPE Miami and Realscreen Austin. Anthony Hopkins surprised many people earlier this year when he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in “The Father” (2020) over the late Chadwick Boseman, whom many thought would win a posthumous Oscar for his turn in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Now the 83-year-old Welshman is potentially in line to pull off another upset at the Emmy Awards.
Hopkins is nominated for Best Narrator after lending his talents to Apple TV+’s comedy “Mythic Quest,” which follows the employees of a video game studio. He’s nominated opposite David Attenborough, who has won three straight Emmys in the category (2018-20) since Best Narrator and Best Character Voice-Over Performance were standardized and separated into two different categories beginning in 2014. Attenborough is actually nominated twice this year: for narrating the BBC America documentary series “A Perfect Planet” as well as Apple’s documentary film “The Year Earth Changed.” Also...

At 95, Sir David Attenborough is nominated this year for an eighth and ninth Emmy for his narration on two BBC nature series, A Perfect Planet and The Year Earth Changed.
Perhaps second only to Queen Elizabeth II for being beloved by the English, Attenborough’s fascination with the natural world started in early childhood, when he collected fossils and living reptiles on the grounds of the University of Leicester, where his father was principal. At age 8, his adoptive sister — one of two German-Jewish refugees his parents had taken in during World War II — gave him a piece of amber ...

Nature documentaries, true crime, even controversial stories of child-sexual abuse — they all need music, and this television season offered composers of varied backgrounds supplying outstanding scores.
“Really, you’re writing a concerto for dialogue,” says Michael Abels (“Get Out”), whose firstever doc assignment was the HBO series “Allen v. Farrow,” which outlined the case against Woody Allen, whose adopted daughter Dylan Farrow has accused the director of abusing her at age 7.
Most of the music in “Allen v. Farrow” supports the “reporting” segments. “Music helps us hear that part of the story, giving it momentum and direction,” says Abels, who enlisted a 40-member string ensemble to record and perform from Budapest.
The occasional clarinet solo, and ’30s- and ’40s-style big-band numbers, reminded viewers of Allen’s own musical tastes and Manhattan jazz-club performances.
The most sensitive material, however, went unscored. “When you see a little girl talking about what happened,...

Discovery’s self-described “experiments” with programming on nascent streaming service Discovery+ are one reason why it has quickly reached almost 12 million direct-to-consumer subscribers.
The company released the streaming totals — of which Discovery+ makes up the bulk — as part of its fourth-quarter earnings report. Discovery+ launched January 4 in the U.S. and the $5-a-month, “ad-lite” service is in the process of rolling out globally. Several major Discovery franchises on networks like TLC and HGTV have had new iterations premiere in streaming, not linear. A co-venture with the BBC yielded the David Attenborough-narrated A Perfect Planet.
Like other traditional media companies still collecting hefty fees from pay-tv operators, Discovery has to walk a fine line in feeding Discovery+ while also maintaining fresh programming for traditional networks. Asked about that balance on the company’s quarterly earnings call with analysts, CEO David Zaslav said, “We are just experimenting, we’re moving some — we’re moving things around.

David Attenborough’s latest gig will be as a hologram that forms part of a U.K. government drive to promote 5G technology.
Attenborough will be the face of an Augmented Reality (Ar) app that will be released alongside BBC series “The Green Planet” in 2022, where the revered broadcaster and natural historian’s likeness will be projected onto scientifically accurate images of the plants he is discussing.
Attenborough’s “A Perfect Planet,” (pictured) produced by Silverback Films, is currently airing on BBC One.
The app is part of a “Green Planet” 5G Ar consortium between BBC Studios, 5G mobile network operator Ee, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Talesmith and Dimension Studios, led by the immersive content studio Factory 42.
