Ultimate wacky episode finds Dobie --it would seem -- interested in a new female professor (Jean Byron), who inspires him to sign up for a course on Egyptian archaeology. Certainly what Herb thinks, especially when Dobie suddenly wants to pack up and head to Egypt with her -- all at his expense?
Actually, Herb may have started it when he lectures Dobie about choosing the right mate. He claims his earnest son "should marry a girl who has a job and can't get fired!" You have to admit, Dr. Burkhart does have a steady gig. Soooo Herb pays a visit to the good doctor and sort of falls for her himself!
There's some clever silent film take-offs; Dobie plays Rudolph Valentino and Dr. Burkhart his secret love --in the middle of the desert? Herb's conversations with the doctor are also hilarious, and add a few bizarre Egyptian dream sequences. Creative writing 101.
Popular character actress Nora Marlowe plays a stone-face cleaning lady, always fun.
Note; the professor's full name, Imogene Burkhart, is actress Jean Byron's real name. This would mark her first appearance in the series in this role. Jean appeared in tv commercials at the time and was a singer with Tommy Dorsey's band.
Maynard has a smaller role here, reading Dobie's letters from Egypt to his mom and dad. And Herb starts dreaming again? The dream sequences are the best.
10 Stars. From Season 3 EPISODE 6. Remastered dvd box set with a cool color cover.
