Walt Disney Animation Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lee regularly returned to the centennial of the Walt Disney Company during the studio’s massive panel devoted to the features they have coming up over the next several years. Innovation was the name of the game. With three years passing since the last time audiences were ensconced in Hall D23 both Walt Disney Animation and Pixar touted a desire to change with the times. Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter said, if anything, the pandemic forced the studio to ask “what’s our purpose” and based on the footage for both studios, there’s a desire to make that purpose great storytelling and A-list actors voicing iconic characters.

A passion project for writer/director John Lasseter, the Cars trilogy of films are the lowest-rated Pixar films according to Rotten Tomatoes. Last week, a very exciting Super Bowl aired, and during that Super Bowl countless commercials for the new “Law & Order” were featured. Usually they are only advertising big shows weeks down the road, but here we are, and here “Law & Order” is. But don’t worry, Dick Wolf’s immortal crime-and-court classic isn’t the only thing to debut this week, with a lengthy new Abraham Lincoln documentary, the latest Tyler Perry-led “Madea” sequel and another few episodes with shambling zombies all coming home.
On with the television!

Betty White, the beloved TV star of hits including “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The Golden Girls,” died December 31 at age 99, just weeks away from her centennial. Now, her famous friends and fans are sharing tributes to her online.
“Rip Betty White, the only SNL host I ever saw get a standing ovation at the after party. A party at which she ordered a vodka and a hotdog and stayed til the bitter end,” Seth Meyers posted on Twitter.
And Ryan Reynolds, with whom White had a long-standing, joking flirtation with online and in the press, wrote, “The world looks different now. She was great at defying expectation. She managed to grow very old and somehow, not old enough. We’ll miss you, Betty. Now you know the secret.”

Five-time Primetime Emmy Award winner, game show panelist and prolific actress Betty White has passed away at the age of 99. Long the subject of internet death hoaxes, the actress’ death was confirmed by her her agent and close friend Jeff Witjas.
White was the last living member of “The Golden Girls,” which ran from 1985 to 1992. She played good girl Rose Nylund opposite Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty. The popular sitcom, which has continued to run on various channels in syndication, spawned a one-season spin-off starring White called “The Golden Palace” in 1992.

25 Best Pixar Movie Characters
From 1995 to 2009, Pixar released one sequel to a previous film: Toy Story 2, made in the shaky early days of the company’s relationship with Disney, and originally planned as a straight-to-video production. From 2010 on, Pixar has released seven different sequels or prequels, and extending franchises has become as much, it not more, a part of the company’s creative DNA as coming up with original stories. Fortunately, most of these continuation films have been good to very good — even if few of them feel necessary.

Disney appears to love two things at the moment: Marvel and Tony Hale. And while both are fun in their own right, the work the studio has been doing with Hale has created some adorable and downright weird programming aimed at children, starting with the creation of Forky in “Toy Story 4” and the Emmy Award-winning spin-off short series, “Forky Asks a Question.”
“The Mysterious Benedict Society,” based on Trenton Lee Stewart’s book, is another entry in Disney’s collaboration with Hale that is equal parts charming, wacky, weird, and whimsical. Series creators Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi skillfully create a world engaging enough for children but with enough added mystery and complexity to ensnare adults (or Disney’s patented brand of childless millennials.)

Perhaps best known for his comedic work on “Veep” and “Arrested Development,” Tony Hale has also been prolific in programs for younger eyeballs over the years, from “Toy Story 4″ and “Forky Asks a Question” to the adaptation of his 2014 book, “Archibald’s Next Big Thing.” Although he continues to work in adult fare (“Eat Wheaties!” and the upcoming “Being the Ricardos”), his recent slate is populated with family-friendly fare: “I Heart Arlo,” the “Rugrats” revival, the “Clifford the Big Red Dog” movie and “The Mysterious Benedict Society” — based on the books by Trenton Lee Stewart — which sees him play identical twins Mr. Benedict and Mr. Curtain.
Ahead of “The Mysterious Benedict Society’s” Disney Plus premiere, here’s Variety’s recent chat with Hale about filming during a pandemic, narcoleptic pratfalls, and the “simple truths” of youth programming.

We don’t have much to celebrate in 2021 so far, but there’s one person we can always count on: actress Betty White! America’s grandmother is turning 99 today (January 17), and she’s not letting quarantine slow her down. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the “Golden Girls” star shared what she’s hoping to do to celebrate.
“Running a mile each morning has been curtailed by Covid, so I am working on getting ‘The Pet Set’ rereleased, and feeding the two ducks who come to visit me every day,” she said.
With so much uncertainty in the world, people tend to lose it when they see their favorite elderly celebrities trending, but White isn’t worried about getting older. In an interview with People magazine she said, “I am blessed with good health so turning 99 is no different than turning 98.” She chalks this up to being perpetually optimistic and not taking herself too seriously.

Presaging a massive expansion of Disney Plus programming, Disney announced on Thursday at least 35 new titles from Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios, Disney Animation and Pixar Animation will be coming to the streaming service starting in 2021.
Kareem Daniel, Disney’s new distribution chief, announced during the Disney Investor Day presentation that 10 “Star Wars” series, 10 Marvel series, and 15 Disney and Pixar Animation series will be coming to Disney Plus. He did not specific the time frame, and promised further specifics will be announced by executive chairman Bob Iger and other Disney executives later in the presentation.
Perhaps the biggest surprise was announcement of 10 “Star Wars” series, the most aggressive creative expansion of the franchise since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. To date, Disney has released five “Star Wars” feature films and one series, “The Mandalorian,” to Disney Plus.
Notably, Daniel said nothing about new “Star Wars” feature films, but later in the Investor Day presentation,...

On Night 4 of the remote Creative Arts Emmy Awards, Pixar earned its first Emmy, for the animated short-form series Forky Asks a Question—specifically, the episode asking, “What Is Love?”
Accepting the award in pre-taped speeches were creator Bob Peterson and producer Mark Nielsen. “Bob and I partnered with a crew of Pixar’s best and brightest,” Nielsen said, “so we share this with everyone at Team Forky Shorts, along with everyone at Disney+.”
Giving thanks to his family, Peterson also paid tribute to lead voice actor Tony Hale, along with the quartet of “comedic geniuses” who appear in the Emmy-winning episode, including Carol Burnett, Mel Brooks, Betty White, and “the late, great Carl Reiner.”
Debuting last November, the series centers on Forky (Hale), a spastic, plastic spork first introduced in Toy Story 4 who knows nothing of the world, asking in each episode a question to learn a little bit about it.

An Emmy for Forky? Pixar’s Bob Peterson might turn that into a reality thanks to “Forky Asks a Question,” which is nominated for Best Short Form Animated Program at the Emmys this year. The creator, director and writer first started working on the Disney+ series in the months leading up to the release of “Toy Story 4,” following very positive internal test screenings for Forky. “I sat down and wrote five little spec scripts that I pitched to Pixar and Disney+ and part of that process was figuring out what questions would Forky ask and then who would he ask them to,” says Peterson in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “I drove it a lot by who I wanted from the Toy Story universe to interact with this goofy utensil.” Watch the video interview above.

When you’re living in the darkest timeline it’s important to find things that give off even the faintest glimmer of happiness. For me, it’s been rewatching all 10 episodes of the Disney+ animated short series “Forky Asks a Question.” Originally debuting in November 2019, before Covid-19 and stay-at-home orders were a part of our everyday lives, “Forky Asks a Question” was one of the first original series to premiere on the Disney streaming service — and it’s been a godsend in these times.
Each episode sees Forky (voiced by Tony Hale), of “Toy Story 4” fame, trying to figure out life’s questions with the help of various side characters in his owner Bonnie’s room. In Episode 5, Forky seeks to answer “What is love?” by talking to a host of older toys voiced by Carol Burnett, Betty White, Mel Brooks, and the late Carl Reiner. As Forky learns...

Baby Yoda is now an Emmy contender. So are several new streaming platforms.
Disney Plus, Apple TV Plus and Quibi all earned nominations from the Television Academy, with Disney Plus’ “The Mandalorian” making a surprise appearance on the best drama series list and Steve Carell and Jennifer Aniston getting nods in the lead acting categories for Apple TV Plus’ “The Morning Show.”
“The Mandalorian” nabbed a total of 15 Emmy nominations, in categories including sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, voice-over and stunt coordination, making it the most nominated program from a direct-to-consumer service that debuted in the last year. The voice-over nod went to “Star Wars” fan-favorite Taika Waititi for his performance as Ig-11, the bounty hunter droid-turned Baby Yoda protector. Waititi wasn’t the only “Mandalorian” performer to receive a nomination, as Giancarlo Esposito broke into the guest actor in a drama category for playing the villainous, dark saber-wielding Moff Gideon.

Multitalented creator Carl Reiner has died at the age of 98. The news was confirmed by Reiner’s assistant, who told Variety that the actor, comedian, and director died of natural causes at his home in Beverly Hills on Monday, June 29. Reiner was a jack-of-all-trades who dabbled in practically every element of Hollywood, from publishing to comedy, showrunning, and screenwriting.
Carl Reiner was born in the Bronx on March 20, 1922. His parents were Jewish immigrants. His father, a watchmaker named Irving, was born in Austria while mother, Bessie, was Romanian. It was Reiner’s older brother Charlie who inspired Carl to go into acting after the older Reiner learned about a free dramatic workshop, but unfortunately, Charlie Reiner would die in WWII. Netflix is getting a decidedly big thing on March 20 when “Archibald’s Next Big Thing” Season 2 hits the streamer, and you can take a sneak peek at what’s in store below, where IndieWire is exclusively premiering the trailer.
The series, based on Tony Hale and Tony Biaggne’s bestselling children’s book, is coming back for a sophomore season that promises all sorts of uplifting, family-friendly fun.
