Thanks to the advocacy of composer Miriam Cutler, the TV Academy finally added a separate category for original documentary scores (series and specials) this season, and she promptly was nominated for both “Rbg” and “Love, Gilda.” It’s a very competitive field with Oscar winner “Free Solo” (Marco Beltrami and Brandon Roberts); “Game of Thrones: The Last Watch” (Hannah Peel); “Hostile Planet” and “Our Planet”, and Cutler couldn’t be more thrilled. “The enthusiasm for the category has been huge with all the submissions and some really good nominees,” she said. “It just opens it up.”
Cutler’s been working as an award-winning doc composer for 25 years, but up until now has never gotten close to winning a Primetime Emmy. “Look what happened: the very first time, two nominations,” she added. “I think it acknowledges how interest in docs has really [grown].”

“Games of Thrones” star Kit Harington will join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in his next on-screen role, an insider with knowledge of the situation tells TheWrap.
Details about which Marvel project Harington will join is not currently known. Disney is holding its annual D23 Expo in Anaheim this weekend, where it is expected to announce new Marvel projects, possibly including Harington’s.
Harington, best known for playing Jon Snow on the show, would follow his fellow “Game of Thrones” co-star Ricard Madden into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Madden will play Icarus opposite Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, and Kumail Nanjiani in “The Eternals,” which focuses on an ancient evolutionary offshoot of humanity whose long lives and colorful adventures inspired legends and myths over millennia.

Beyoncé and Sara Bareilles could add Emmy trophies to their awards shelves this year, having been nominated in key music categories Tuesday by the Television Academy.
Beyoncé’s “Homecoming” special on Netflix was nominated in six categories, and four of those include a nod for the pop superstar herself. Only one of those is in a music category; she’s nominated for music direction of a variety special alongside co-music director Derek Dixie (a first-time nominee). Her other nods are as a producer, co-director and writer of the special.
Bareilles, nominated last year for her performance as Mary Magdalene in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” was cited this year as co-songwriter of a new song on CBS’s Tony Awards, “This One’s for You.” Her co-host on that show, Josh Groban, shares the nomination and is up for his first Emmy.
They were the most high-profile performers cited by Emmy voters in the seven music categories.

The last month has been filled with highs and lows for Game of Thrones fans. Back in May, the series finale for HBO’s fantasy drama was released, and while some were satisfied with how creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss wrapped things up, plenty of longtime viewers were left disappointed with how the ending panned out. In a show which featured dozens of characters and plotlines, it’s not entirely surprising how some long-hanging stories didn’t get the conclusions they deserve, but that realization doesn’t make the sting any more palatable.
A few staff writers here at We Got This Covered felt that the final season left a dark mark on the franchise as a whole, and chances are, you probably have a couple of friends of your own who feel the same way. Still, it seems like HBO hasn’t given up on Game of Thrones just yet.

What is dead may never die — including slightly embarrassing footage of the Game of Thrones stars from their early years on the show.
HBO has released a sneak peek at the Thrones reunion special, which will exclusively be available on the show’s limited-edition Blu-ray set, releasing Tuesday, Dec. 3.
In the clip above, reunion host Conan O’Brien cues up some behind-the-scenes footage from Thrones‘ first season, including glimpses at a baby-faced Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams and Isaac Hempstead Wright.
Now that the fantasy drama has ended, it’s especially fun to hear the young actors talk about their hopes for the show.

The Game of Thrones finale hit everyone hard, but for Kit Harington, for all his character went through, he needed to decompress from all of it. The actor, who played fan favorite Jon Snow for eight seasons, checked into a “wellness retreat” since the finale of the HBO fantasy series.
“Kit has decided to utilize this break in his schedule as an opportunity to spend some time at a wellness retreat to work on some personal issues,” Harington’s rep told Deadline. “It definitely won’t impact any potential upcoming work.”
Harington was also visibly emotional in the documentary Game of Thrones: The Last Watch which aired May 26. We saw Harington get emotional while filming his final scene where Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) is killing prisoners after King’s Landing has been burnt to a crisp. We also saw him brought to tears during the table read for the finale...

“Game of Thrones” finally delivers the beautiful, epic, and heartfelt farewell that fans want — not with the finale episode but through the behind-the-scenes documentary “The Last Watch.” Helmed by “Seahorse” director Jeanie Finlay, it’s a remarkable snapshot of the people who’ve given their lives to the sprawling production.
The biggest draw for fans of the series is of course seeing the cast in their civilian clothing assemble for the final season table read. Presided over by showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, with stage directions read by executive producers, the whole affair feels energetic and somber at the same time. This is the beginning of the end of their Long Night that is the making of Season 8.
Beyond the actor-centric scenes, however, the documentary also makes stars of the people behind the scenes. From Del Reid, the Head of Snow, to Andy McClay, the most recognizable extra on the show,...

As you may have heard, “Game of Thrones” is coming to an end this Sunday. That doesn’t mean that HBO is abandoning its hit series altogether, of course: In addition to the spinoff series that’s currently being developed, the network will air “Game of Thrones: The Last Watch” for viewers who’ve yet to fully accept that it’s time to leave Westeros.
Per HBO, the documentary special “delves deep into the mud and blood to reveal the tears and triumphs involved in the challenge of bringing the fantasy world of Westeros to life in the very real studios, fields and car-parks of Northern Ireland … Much more than a ‘making of’ documentary, this is a funny, heartbreaking story, told with wit and intimacy, about the bittersweet pleasures of what it means to create a world — and then have to say goodbye to it.”

Last Year’s Winner: “The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: Prior to the Netflix disruption, this category was a three-horse race from 2003 – 2016. During those 13 years, only HBO, History, and PBS earned victories in the category, and aside from one win each from Discovery and CBS, these were the only networks to win in the history of Best Documentary or Nonfiction Special category.
Fun Fact: One of the Big Four broadcast networks hasn’t been nominated in this category since 2011 — just two years before the TV Academy renamed Outstanding Nonfiction Series as Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special. Prior to the shift toward including feature-length documentaries, ABC, CBS, NBC, and/or Fox had been in the running nine of the 11 years prior.
Notable Ineligible Series: Docuseries have their own category, so don’t expect the likes of “America to Me” or “Our Planet” here.
