Yash Raj Films’ hugely anticipated “Pathaan,” the comeback film of Shah Rukh Khan, is releasing worldwide in over 100 countries, making it one of the widest openings for a Bollywood film.
Also starring Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, and directed by Siddharth Anand, “Pathaan” is part of producer Aditya Chopra’s spy universe, which also includes the “Tiger” franchise, starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, and “War,” starring Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff.
In 2022, Bollywood film “Vikram Vedha,” with Hrithik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan and Radhika Apte, also released in more than 100 countries.
“Pathaan” was in the eye of a storm in December 2022, when members of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party took objection to a song in the film and the film was subsequently censored. However, in recent days the film indirectly received a boost when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told party workers not to make “unnecessary comments” about movies.

Yash Raj Films has released a trailer for much anticipated Bollywood film “Pathaan,” starring superstar Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham.
After a dismal 2022 where flops far outnumbered hits among Hindi-language films, and which ended with the box office failure of Ranveer Singh’s “Cirkus” on which Bollywood analysts were resting their revival hopes, “Pathaan” is the first flag bearer for the beleaguered industry for 2023.
“Pathaan” is also the comeback film for Khan, known as one of the great romantic stars of Bollywood. Some of his last few films have underperformed at the box office and his most recent release as a solo hero was “Zero” in 2018. He has since had cameos in “Laal Singh Chaddha” and “Brahmastra Part One: Shiva.”

India’s Central Board of Film Certification (Cbfc) has “advised changes” to Yash Raj Films’ “Pathaan,” the comeback film of superstar Shah Rukh Khan that also stars Deepika Padukone and John Abraham.
Controversy erupted in India on Dec. 12 when the song “Besharam Rang” – literally shameless color – was released. A segment of the song features Padukone in orange colored swimwear and Khan in a green shirt. Some saw the color orange as saffron – the color associated with India’s ruling Hindu nationalist party, the Bjp. Green is the color traditionally associated with Islam. India has had a long history of communal clashes between the two religions.
On Dec. 14, Narottam Mishra, the home minister of the Bjp-ruled central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, told the media that the costumes in the song were “objectionable” and that it had been shot with “a dirty mindset” and warned that the film could be banned in the state.

Filmmakers giving out inflated box-office figures to the media and posting them on social media has become a norm now. A few media people are even bribed to endorse these claims. But there are two sides to a coin and, similarly, social media also has people with ‘For’ and ‘Against’ viewpoints. So, in the end, it is all a futile exercise. People see through them.
Now, even film stars, from Akshay Kumar to Amitabh Bachchan, lament the missing audience in the cinemas. But there are also some irresponsible and foolish actors who make public statements, like “we are not asking audiences to come watch our movies!”
Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, Tapasee Pannu and Alia Bhatt went on the record with such comments! Who do you think films are made for? Only for the stars to make money? But where will the money to pay you come from if you tell...

The Hindi-language Mumbai-based film industry known as Bollywood has been the most visible part of the Indian film industry over the decades but that hegemony appears to be waning.
In recent years, the cinema of South India, comprising the Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam language industries, has stolen a march over its hitherto more glamorous Bollywood counterpart in both content and box office.
In the 1990s, Mani Ratnam’s Tamil-language films “Roja” (1992) and “Bombay” (1995) were pan-India hits in their Hindi dubbed versions and the filmmaker made a few films in Hindi before returning to his native Tamil. The notion of a pan-India hit, i.e. films made in one of the South Indian languages becoming a hit across India and Indian diaspora markets in Hindi and other language dubbed versions, roared back to life with S.S. Rajamouli’s “Baahubali” films (2015 and 2017), made in Telugu and Tamil, which together grossed 379 million worldwide,...

“Laal Singh Chaddha” follows Laal (Aamir Khan), as he unwittingly finds himself in the midst of pivotal events in Indian history (just the way Forrest Gump finds himself living through American history), oblivious to the magnitudes of what he witnesses and yet a key player throughout. Well, at least until 2014.
As the movie opens, we get what possibly is the longest disclaimer put in any Indian film (yet). You start wondering, is the movie really going to take into account those turbulent incidents? Had the makers gone for something so incisive and compelling, “Laal Singh Chaddha” would’ve come out as a greatly reformative exercise of remaking a classic. But given the many ways of deploying hate inciting mobs that the current establishment is capable of, the filmmakers here make a film so inoffensive, that it doesn’t quite reach its thematic highs. Laal Singh Chaddha is the latest film to face targeted attacks from anti-Muslim, Hindu-nationalist trolls who some claim are beginning to impact box office performance
In August this year, a week after the release of Laal Singh Chaddha, Bollywood’s adaptation of Forrest Gump, a Twitter account with about 280,000 followers, tweeted: “#Urduwood is trending. Thanks to all who have accepted this term to accurately define the anti-national, anti-Hindu paedophile cabal that takes your money to destroy you.” The tweet received more than 1,700 retweets and about 5,800 likes.
For those not familiar with the term “Urduwood”, it is a pejorative popular among far-right social media and politicians. Urdu is an Indian language with a Perso-Arabic script, and the national language of Pakistan; hence it is associated with Muslims and its use is a way to claim the film industry is “Hinduphobic”.

How often do women speak up against domestic violence? The answer is not many times. It is precisely for this reason that Mona Singh, who’s still remembered as the ‘Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin’ lead actress, is going to raise her voice against domestic violence in her upcoming short film ‘Ek Chup’, directed by Sonya V. Kapoor.
Mona talks about her experience of working in the short film, which centres on domestic violence during the lockdown.
Mona said: “Ek Chup is based on the idiom ‘ek chup sau sukh’. You know, as Indians, most mothers tell their daughters to keep quiet and everything will work out. However, it’s important for women to stand up for their rights and I think this movie and the script was just absolutely perfect to talk about this topic.”

Ayan Mukerji’s Bollywood action fantasy “Brahmāstra Part One: Shiva” was one of the leading films at the global box office over the weekend, grossing 28.2 million, according to its producers, Disney’s Star Studios India and Dharma Productions.
The film released in India across 5,019 screens and debuted at No. 1 with a three-day weekend of 18.9 million. The film’s overseas screen count was 3,894.
In the U.S., where the film is distributed by Disney, it released in 810 theaters and debuted at No. 2 with 4.4 million.
However, the film needs to sustain its momentum to break even, with its budget approximately 51 million.
“Brahmāstra: Part One,” the first of a planned trilogy, takes place in modern-day India and follows Shiva (Ranbir Kapoor) — a young man on the brink of an epic love, with a girl named Isha (Alia Bhatt). But their world is turned upside down when Shiva learns that he has a mysterious...

The 28-year-old actress, who went to study at Columbia in New York, has been working on her Hindi diction for nearly 6 months with Kulvinder Bakshish (The language coach who also trained Aamir Khan in Punjabi for ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’).
She has also been doing workshops together with the film’s actor Anshuman Jha.
Talking about the film being her vehicle as a leading lady, Ayesha said in a statement: “I am excited about getting back into acting and shooting for Hari Om. It’s a sweet, family film which will touch a chord with everyone in some way. I like the simplicity with which Harish Sir writes his stories and fleshes out his characters.

Bollywood stars make it a point not to promote each other’s films, but South Indian stars are used to giving shoutouts to each other’s work and stand by the principle of swimming or sinking together.
In the recent past, Chiranjeevi, S S Rajamouli and Nagarjuna promoted Aamir Khan’s ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, and stars of the Tamil industry, too, were generous in their praise for the film.
The same spirit of camaraderie has been evident in the ‘Brahmastra’ promotional blitz, which is being led by two people who understand how social media works – Alia Bhatt (fresh from the warm reception accorded to ‘Darlings’) and Karan Johar, a co-producer of the epic film.
After Rajamouli and Nagarjuna (who is making his Hindi cinema debut with the film) joined its lead character, Ranbir Kapoor, to promote the film in Chennai, it is Jr Ntr, whom Karan Johar described as a...

People now just refuse to come to the cinemas. This changed attitude was demonstrated recently when few people turned up to watch either Akshay Kumar’s ‘Raksha Bandhan’ or Aamir Khan’s ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’. A week later, the same reluctance was evident for the comparatively smaller film, ‘Do Baaraa’.
‘Raksha Bandhan’ and ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ were both released in the same week to cash in on the extended holiday period starting with the festival of Raksha Bandhan on August 11, leading up to Independence Day, and ending with the Parsi New Year on August 16. When two high-profile films have been released in the same week at other times, often both have proved to be successful and there was no reason why these two should not have taken advantage of this long weekend and reap the benefit. Sadly, there were no takers for either!

In the wake of mixed reviews on its release day, the makers of ‘Liger’ announced on Friday that the movie has grossed Rs 33.12 crore worldwide on Day One in all the languages.
That may be bigger than the opening-day collection of ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’, Bollywood’s biggest mainstream hit this year, which gained traction as the days went by. Trade news sites, however, are being cautious with their figures.
Bollymoviereviewz.com reports that worldwide, ‘Liger’ has grossed Rs 28.1 crore, including Rs 3.63 crore from America, and of this, the all-India share is Rs 19 crore.
That, again, is more than what ‘Samrat Prithviraj’, ‘Shamshera’, ‘Raksha Bandhan’ and ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ each made on their first day, but it is clear from all available figures that ‘Liger’ has done well only in the two Telugu-speaking states.

Unfazed by the box-office failure of Aamir Khan’s ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, where she played his character’s love interest, Kareena Kapoor has started work on her maiden production. She, however, has not revealed its name or other details.

The actress smartly concealed the title of the project by keeping a pen over it, though one can see the words ‘The’ and ‘Murder’.

Despite the star wattage of A-listers Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar, the underwhelming box office performance of “Forrest Gump” adaptation “Laal Singh Chaddha” and “Raksha Bandhan,” respectively, have set the alarm bells ringing in Bollywood.
Both films released on Aug. 11. The date was tailor-made for “Raksha Bandhan,” a film about brother-sister relationships, as it coincided with the festival of Raksha Bandhan, which celebrates siblinghood. Headlined by Kumar, one of India’s most bankable stars, the film, which was made on a budget of approximately 9 million, has collected some 6 million in a week of release, according to industry estimates.
The numbers are starker for “Laal Singh Chaddha.” Khan headlined three of India’s all-time box office champions, including No. 1 “Dangal” (311 million); No. 6 “Secret Superstar” (154 million), by “Laal Singh Chaddha” director Advait Chandan; and No. 7 “Pk” (140 million). However, his last release, 2018’s “Thugs of Hindostan,” also underperformed.

Bollywood is facing an existential crisis it has never experienced in its lifetime. In a country where the top-end model of the Mahindra XUV700 has a waiting period extending up to February 2024, and the most recent date for a U.S. visa interview is some time in June 2024, you can just walk into a Hindi film screening anytime, anywhere, because no one’s watching what’s coming out of Bollywood.
With a loaded release calendar, starting with the VFX-heavy ‘Brahmastra’ and going up to Shah Rukh Khan’s much-anticipated ‘Jawan’ and the Salman Khan-starrer ‘Tiger 3’, riding on its broke back, Bollywood is facing the double whammy of its established stars all seeming to be well past their sell-by date and its scriptwriters appearing to be completely out of touch with the paradigm shift in consumer preferences.

Hindi cinema of late seems to be in trouble as Bollywood’s big-ticket releases such as ‘Samrat Prithviraj’, ‘Shamshera’, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ and ‘Raksha Bandhan’ have failed to impress the audience.
Nevertheless, a motley bunch of films starring names such as Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Ajay Devgn, Varun Dhawan, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Kriti Sanon are lined up for release in the coming months.
However, the million-dollar question looming over the furrowed brows of distributors is: Will these movies ensure the return of ‘achche din’ for Bollywood?
The first big film, which is slated to hit the screens is Ayan Mukerji’s trilogy ‘Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva’ starring newly wed couple Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt along with Amitabh Bachchan and Nagarjuna. The film is scheduled to hit the theatres on September 9.

After disaster struck the two Independence Day long weekend releases — Aamir Khan’s long-awaited, mega-hyped ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ and the Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Raksha Bandhan’ — a wag commented that Bollywood has become like the Congress: it has only its past to live on and stares at a dim future, unless a miracle happens.
For Aamir, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ has been his worst commercially since his 2000 film ‘Mela’, despite getting a five-day holiday weekend, starting with Raksha Bandhan on August 11 and ending with Independence Day. And it has been his second successive flop after the ‘Thugs of Hindostan’, which bombed despite the additional presence of Amitabh Bachchan.
For Akshay Kumar, ‘Raksha Bandhan’ has been his third successive dud — starting with ‘Bachchan Pandey’, which got wiped out by ‘The Kashmir Files’, and ‘Samrat Prithviraj’, despite the film being endorsed by the Bjp top brass and made tax-free in three states.

On a day when the media was invited to a screening of his directorial, the mystery drama ‘Dobaaraa’, Anurag Kashyap did what Aamir Khan is famous for doing — let everyone know that he’s still good friends with his ex-wives. ‘Dobaaraa’ is awaiting its big-screen release on August 19.

You just know you’re in for a horrible weekend at the box office when six new movies open in over 250 theaters — two of those into more than 1,500 theaters — along with a major nationwide expansion and a 40th anniversary re-release of a beloved classic, and only two of those eight movies make it into the Top 10.
We’ll get into each of those in a bit, but first, we start with Brad Pitt’s action-comedy “Bullet Train,” which remained in first place for a second weekend with 13.4 million, a pretty substantial 55 drop from its opening last week. It has grossed 54.4 million, so far, with no guarantee it might join this year’s 100 million club.
The animated “DC League of Super-Pets” maintained second place with an estimated 7.2 million, but with one major caveat. According to estimates, the Dwayne Johnson-Kevin Hart animated vehicle only made 20,000 more than Tom Cruise’s “Top Gun: Maverick” in its 12th weekend.

As the tentpoles go into hibernation for the next two months, this is the chance for the little guy to shine, no longer under the shadow of a steady stream of summer blockbusters. However, none of the three smaller films that opened wide were able to even crack the top five, and that’s despite a relatively low grossing set of holdovers. The overall weekend box office was 65.2 million, the lowest since February, and given the thin schedule in the coming months, this may be as good as it gets until mid-October when Halloween Ends releases.
Bullet Train sped into number one in its second weekend with 13.4 million, a drop of 55, which like its 30 million opening isn’t great but isn’t bad either. The 54.5 million cume is tracking closely with The Lost City’s 55.5 million post-second weekend total, and that film had a solid 105 million finish. The international box office is more important here,...

If you don’t build it, they won’t come. With no new major titles this week, audiences chose to stay home this weekend — and for the next two months, that could be our new normal. “Bullet Train” (Sony) dropped 55 percent in its second week, but led the top 10 with a gross of 13.4 million — the lowest figure for a #1 film in over six months. Similarly, the 65 million weekend total for all films is the worst showing since early February.
Over the last four months, when studios release major films theaters respond with encouraging results — sometime spectacular, in the case of “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount). Five films passed 300 million domestic, similar to 2019 (although today’s higher ticket prices made it easier).
Grosses for the year to date are about two thirds of 2019 through the same date, but that result could prove to be the high water mark for some time — and...

Kareena Kapoor Khan’s over-the-top Poo from ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ is one of the most memorable and loved roles from the actress’s career. The Bollywood diva herself finds it unbelievable that even after 21 years of the film’s release the character is still relevant amongst all age-groups.
Kareena’s character Poo is not only known for her taste in fashion but also one liners such as “Kaun hai yeh jisne dobara mudke mujhe nahi dekha”, ‘P.H.A.T – Pretty, Hot And Tempting’ and “Tumhe koi haq nahi banta ki tum itni khoobsurat lago. Not fair” among many others.
Asked if she feels that Poo deserves a movie to herself, Kareena said: “Oh God! Like I think now this character is so relevant with this generation more than it was then.”

Aamir Khan is one of the most decorated film stars in the world, and so when adapting the famous story of Forrest Gump, he seemed the perfect fit to step into Tom Hanks’ shoes. To mark the release of Laal Singh Chaddha, which remains loyal to the original, yet imbues and enriches the narrative with Indian culture and history, we had the pleasure of speaking to Khan via Zoom.
We discuss how much this role has meant to him, and why they’ve decided to bring this particular story back to life. He also talks about his favourite Indian snacks, and since he’s playing a role that was once populated by Hanks, we want to know which of his roles he thinks Hanks would do well…
