- When her mother Jane suddenly disappears, Casey must face the dark secrets of the past to find her before it's too late.
- Charlotte Marsh was born in captivity. Her mother, Jane Marsh, was abducted as a teenager and spent eight long years in captivity, during which time she gave birth to Charlotte. Jane escaped when Charlotte was six years old and Timothy Fast, the kidnapper, was arrested and incarcerated. Fast forward twenty years later and they have moved on. They changed their identities to Lena Winters and Casey Winters, and built a normal life for themselves. For Casey, the memories of a childhood in captivity haunt her. She is plagued by nightmares that only seem to be getting worse. When local women start to go missing, the method of abduction is eerily similar to Lena's and she reveals to Casey that Timothy Fast had an accomplice. Is this mysterious accomplice kidnapping women now? Are Lena and Casey in danger? Casey is furious that her mother has hidden this knowledge from her all this time. When Lena suddenly disappears, Casey must face the dark secrets of the past to find her mother before it's too late.
- It's been twenty years since hairdresser Lena Winters and her twenty-six year old daughter, college student Casey Winters, were able to escape from the confines of Timothy Fast, who held Lena captive against her will for eight years, and who is Casey's biological father in impregnating Lena. While Timothy has been in prison for this and other crimes since including murder, Lena still suffers from PTSD, and while Casey also suffers from nightmares, she does not want to leave her mother for all that she's done for them to survive that ordeal - including changing their identities from what they were then known as Jane Marsh and Charlotte Marsh to prevent anyone from dredging up that ordeal - despite Casey having dreams of studying abroad in Italy. Lena's PTSD is triggered again when she and Casey are approached by private detective Nate Bishop, who is investigating a series of abductions and subsequent murders of young women, the murders not only seemingly matching Timothy's M.O., but several other items in these abductions and murders, such as significant dates, seem to be tied to Lena and Casey especially in relation to Timothy. While Lena and Casey do not want to get involved, Casey eventually decides to talk to Nate in discovering something among their keepsakes that may be a repressed memory which could be a clue to who the current perpetrator is. The issue becomes more urgent for Casey when she and Lena are outed by an eager reporter which leads to Lena being abducted and potentially the killer's next victim.—Huggo
