Murmur, the new horror movie from indie filmmaker Mark Polish, will have its world premiere at the Oldenburg Film Festival, the fall event known as “Germany’s Sundance.”
Polish is best known as one half, with brother Michael, of the writing/directing team The Polish brothers, whose credits include Sundance hit Twin Falls, Idaho (1999), Jackpot (2001), The Astronaut Farmer (2006) and The Smell of Success. Michael Polish has typically taken over directing duties on Polish brothers films, with Mark playing a lead role and both siblings sharing screenwriting credits.
Mark Polish first stepped behind the camera for Headlock (2019), his feature debut starring Andy Garcia, Dianna Agron and James Frain.
Murmur, which he wrote and directed, follows a group of social media stars who become guinea pigs for a new app that breaks down the boundaries between reality and fantasy. Polish’s daughter Logan Polish, of...

Twenty years and 12 features down the line, it’s still hard to peg the directorial sensibility of Michael Polish, with or without the presence of brother Mark as frequent co-writer and actor. His output has been all over the place, from early Lynchian quirkfests to the very middle-of-the-road inspirational dramedy “The Astronaut Farmer,” not to mention mediocre genre exercises, a B&W Parisian romance (“For Lovers Only”). a good movie about Jack Kerouac (“Big Sur”), and one about manure salesmen that’s about as good as that sounds (“The Smell of Success”). It remains a puzzle whether his thematic interests are more laudably diverse than they are simply arbitrary.
“Nona” is yet another departure, a primarily Spanish-language feature shot on location in Central America, touching on issues of illegal immigration and human trafficking. The narrative’s picaresque road-trip majority doesn’t properly set up a late turn towards seriousness, draining...

Douglas, DeNiro, Freeman and Kline...
Boom.
A weigh-in registering these four gets no heavier in Hollywood especially when you consider what must have been a lacklustre scenario as the script was first laid out on ankle high coffee tables. Four old(ish) comrades get together for a last gasp vavavoom in Vegas, courtesy of soon to be hitched silicone man (Douglas). Blah, blah, blah.
Cue ensuing hilarity based on the fumbling’s and fun of three serving stereotypes; bitter/angry man (DeNiro), warm/beardy man (Kline) and smoothed out/born to do it man (Freeman). The quips are cheap but inviting and lift more than a few titters. The notion of knowing what you wish you could have known 40 years earlier and then acting up as young/old men is quite apparent in all but one. The exception being Billy (Douglas) who’s own journey in Vegas is one that could have,...

The Smell Of Success. Anyone? Anyone heard of it? No? I'm a bit baffled myself. Despite being in the can for, according to IMDb, almost two years, I've never even sniffed any news about the film. It's supposed to be a zany old-timey comedy, but the trailer kind of shits the bed. It's not particularly funny, and I'll be honest -- if I were judging by the trailer alone (I know, I know, shut up already), I'd guess it kind of stinks.
But perhaps there's a hidden scent of greatness amidst all that crap. Perhaps a whiff of something far more clever. The synopsis certainly has potential, in its own bizarre, quirky way:
When a tragic accident ends the life of Mr. Rose, the genius behind Rose's Manure Company, the livelihood of its loyal fleet of salesmen threatens to go, as they say, into the toilet. Enter estranged daughter Rosemary,...

With Stay Cool and Manure in the halls of 2009, the Polish Brothers are looking forward. Variety reports that the pair are gearing up for a new film called For Lovers Only. Michael Polish will direct, Mark Polish wrote the script, and the latter will star alongside Stana Katic, who's currently steaming up the boob tube opposite Nathan Fillion on Castle.
Said to be inspired by the French New Wave and Claude Lelouch's 1966 double Oscar-winner A Man and a Woman, the romance focuses on a journalist (Katic) in Paris on assignment, who runs into a lover (Polish) from her past. Presumably enraptured by reconciliation, the pair flee Paris and travel "by train, car, and motorcycle as their love affair takes them across France from Normandy to St. Tropez."
Stana Katic traveling across France is intriguing enough, but here's something to further whet your appetite: This incarnation is a bit different than Lelouch's film,...

Shanghai
Opens: 2010
Cast: John Cusack, Gong Li, Ken Watanabe, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chow Yun-Fat
Director: Mikael Hafstrom
Summary: In the months leading up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, an American man arrives in Shanghai to find his friend recently murdered. In investigating his friend's death, he stumbles upon a secret the United States government has been keeping and falls in love in the process.
Analysis: After being granted permission to shoot in the Chinese city, the $10 million production found its permit quickly being revoked by the Government who expressed concerns about the script. The result is Bangkok and the United Kingdom standing in for the real Shanghai which seems kind of against the entire point.
Cusack himself has emphatically endorsed the project in interviews, calling it a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity", but being stuck at the cash-strapped Weinstein Company means that its release plans are unsure beyond a vague promise of a limited bow around Easter.

After Manure quietly (and not-so-quietly) stunk up the scene at the Sundance Film Festival, the Polish Brothers (Mark and Michael) have returned to the festival circuit with Stay Cool -- a film that leaps into your lap with its perky, original concept, but then slowly but surely fails to deliver ... well, pretty much everything. What we have here is an on-the-verge-of-40 novelist (Mark Polish) who returns to his hometown only to find himself stuck in a really bad, cliched '80s movie -- complete with two bonehead best friends, mean teachers, a moronic high school principal and a hardcore crush on that girl whose meat-head boyfriend is named Brad. And I don't mean cliched '80s movie in a bad way -- that's kinda the point with Stay Cool; our lovable, somewhat-awkward novelist learns that he must overcome the fears and regrets he's had since graduating 20 years ago by living...

Tea Leoni in Manure (she must love that caption) Wow, at least I know I am not the only one struggling to figure out what to write about as the online world is currently at a standstill with the Sundance Film Festival offering up very little in the way of movies to talk about with An Education coming out as the only film with any amount of real praise and films such as The Informers getting bad buzz and now the Polish brothers' latest effort Manure receiving an all's mum Qand#038;A report. From the Los Angeles Times comes a report from Jevon Phillips who was at the premiere of Manure, which stars Billy Bob Thornton and Tea Leoni, both of which were on hand along with Mark and Michael Polish as well as others for a post-screening Qand#038;A session. However, as Phillips reports: The film, about 1960s manure...

The Polish Brothers, who made their debut with the great Twins Falls Idaho and later devolved to The Astronaut Farmer, have a new film set to make its premiere at Sundance. Michael and Mark Polish return with “Manure,” starring Téa Leoni, Billy Bob Thornton, Kyle MacLachlan in a comic tale centered on manure salesmen in the early 1960s. The plot synopsis follows: “When a tragic accident ends the life of Mr. Rose, the genius behind Rose’s Manure Company, the livelihood of its loyal fleet of salesmen threatens to go, as they say, into the toilet. Enter estranged daughter Rosemary (Leoni), a high-class- cosmetics salesgirl, who steps in to take control. She is not sure she has a nose for the family business, but she is determined to make foul into profit. Little does she know that a ruthless, slick-talking fertilizer rep is plotting a takeover. Whether she likes it or not,...

You don't want to watch a movie called Manure? Even if it's directed by the guys who last made The Astronaut Farmer? And even if it stars Billy Bob Thornton and Téa Leoni? If we haven't sold you yet, than maybe this teaser trailer or these photos will. Manure is showing at Sundance in January and today we've got a short teaser trailer to show you. What exactly is Manure? It's a comedy about manure salesmen in 1960s heartland America. And yes, it stars Billy Bob Thornton as that very salesman. Thanks to SlashFilm we've got this There Will Be Blood-like trailer that doesn't show much, but might be just enough. On a couple of occasions, I've had a chance to sit down with twin filmmakers Mark and Michael Polish, better known to us all as The Coen Brothers.
What? No. Sorry - they're obviously the Polish Brothers. You might know them by their unbelievably unique films more than their own name. There's Twin Falls, Idaho, The Astronaut Farmer, and the extremely rich Northfork, which was probably a little too left afield.
The brothers are back, taking their show to Sundance in a couple of weeks with a new comedy entitled Manure. Guess what it's about? Yep.
The story is pretty simple to follow: A widow ( Tea Leoni) inherits her husbands successful manure company and has to fight off a hostile takeover by a rival in the fertilizer business ( Kyle MacLachlan). Billy Bob Thornton co-stars, playing the top manure salesman in the company. There's a proud honor, huh?

Yesterday we shared with you the competition slate for the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, which, depending on the paper you read, was full of the dark and disturbing or the sad and melodramatic. Good to know we'll be smiling in the cold mountains of Utah come January. Today, the Sundance Institute has announced their non-competition films; this includes the Premieres section, which is usually full of studio flicks -- stuff that's set to debut in theaters the following month or so, and films that feature big stars; the big guns. Then we have the Spectrum section (with 16 dramatic films and seven docs), the Midnight section (eight films), and the Frontier section (six films).
Among the ones that stand out to me at first glance are:
I Love You Philip Morris (Premiere), with Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor playing prison lovers. Adventureland - The director of Superbad follows that flick up with...

Duchovny's Tennis Coach To Blame For Leoni Split?
David Duchovny's female tennis coach has sparked rumours her friendship with the actor was the cause for his split from wife Tea Leoni.
News of Duchovny and Leoni's split hit the headlines on Wednesday just days after the X-Files star checked out of an Arizona rehab centre, where he had been seeking help for sex addiction.
Leoni's co-star on upcoming film Manure, Billy Bob Thornton, was recently forced to dismiss talk of a romance between the two when the actress described him as "maybe my new favourite person in the world".
But now 48-year-old Duchovny's blonde coach Edit Pakay, 28, has sent gossips into a spin - after she failed to deny that she was having an affair with the star.
She tells Britain's The Mail on Sunday, "We have a very, very close friendship. I don't want to be the third person in the marriage but I know it can be seen that way.
"David and I are very close friends and we still play tennis together. He's an excellent player. He likes physically strong, fit women... He is a wonderful man. He's a very intelligent, very kind and good man.
"I don't want to say anything that might hurt David. I am not going to deny it (the affair claims). I don't know what our relationship means to him."
She adds, "I wasn't instantly attracted to him. What is great about David is his intelligence and kindness. He is the sort of person you get to like more the more you know him."...
