David Ellison’s fledgling Skydance Animation — run by head of animation John Lasseter and president Holly Edwards — has moved its movie slate from Apple Studios to Netflix. The multi-year streaming deal commences with next year’s musical fantasy “Spellbound,” directed by Vicky Jenson (“Shrek” and “Shark Tale”), featuring the voice talent of Rachel Zegler, Nicole Kidman, and Javier Bardem, and boasting a score from Alan Menkin and original songs with lyricist Glen Slater. It’s about a princess who tries to reverse a spell that transformed her parents into monsters.
Set for release in 2025 is “Pookoo,” a buddy comedy about two enemies — a woodland creature and a majestic bird — that magically trade places. It’s helmed by former Disney director Nathan Greno (“Tangled”), with original music composed by Siddhartha Khosla.
Also in the works are two prestigious features that are a result of Lasseter’s strong relationships with directors Brad Bird...

The upcoming opus by Albert Serra and the feature debut by Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet will also be co-produced by the French-German channel’s film arm. Arte France Cinéma’s first selection committee of 2020 (headed up by Olivier Père) has chosen to get involved in three projects as a co-producer and by means of pre-purchases. Standing out among them is Boy from Heaven, which will be the fourth feature by Swedish director of Egyptian heritage Tarik Saleh, following Metropia (first revealed in the Venice International Film Critics’ Week in 2009), Tommy (2014) and The Nile Hilton Incident. The filmmaker will once again be working with topliner Fares Fares (winner of the 2018 Guldbagge Award for Best Actor for The Nile Hilton Incident and equally...
Exclusive: The Nile Hilton Incident director Tarik Saleh has become attached to helm The Red Circle, a remake of Jean-Pierre Melville’s classic 1970 cat-and-mouse thriller. Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, an Oscar nominee for Dirty Pretty Things, has written the script. Arthur Sarkissian Prods and Graham King’s GK Films are partnered to produce with Studiocanal which fully-financed development.
The project has been in the works for a while, but now has real momentum. I understand Knight recently met with Saleh in London to discuss, and Saleh is now doing his own work within the current draft before going out to cast. Miss Sloane scribe Johnathan Perera has also done work on the script.
The updated story follows two escaped criminals from the West and an ex Hong Kong cop who plan an elaborate heist while trying to avoid a local crime boss and a relentless police investigator.
Saleh is a fast-rising talent.

When we last heard from Swedish director Tarik Saleh he was on the festival circuit with his animated science fiction film Metropia. Well, he's back now and working in an entirely different sphere with his latest effort, Tommy.Moa Gammel stars as Estelle, the wife of a mid tier gangster living on the run after a job gone bad. But just before Christmas Estelle returns home with the couple 's young daughter and a very simple message: Tommy is coming home and it's time for everyone to pay their debts.Due for release in March 2014, the first trailer for this one has arrived and it looks very much like it could end up being the next buzz title in the current wave of Scandinavian crime stories....

The Film:
2024 in a gray, totalitarian state, depleted of oil, not unlike Poland under communist rule. Only the Baudrillardian hyper-reality of quiz shows and the lottery have any color. And perhaps shampoo ads touting themselves as “a reflection of the soul.” Oh, and there’s a “Hello Kitty” doll with a built-in camera. When I was in Tokyo, I visited the Hello Kitty signature store and learned that there’s a Hello Kitty product for almost everything, including a dildo! That Japanese manufacturer, however, draws the line at violence and will not produce items that harm, like a Hk knife, so I’m reluctant to attest to the veracity of a spy camera.
Roger (Vincent Gallo, who in animation here resembles a puny Spike Jonze) can’t stop his thoughts. After his bike shoots craps, he must travel via the underground “Traxx,” a Metro where he hears voices telling him,...

Bradford Animation Festival
The UK's largest and longest-running animation festival brings the usual cornucopia of creativity – but this being a competition, instead of swamping us with everything out there, they've mercifully sorted it into categorised shortlists, each the size of a single screening (ie: student, music, children). There are features, too: Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal's Chico And Rita harks back to 1950s Cuba, while Vincent Gallo and Juliette Lewis-voiced Metropia fast-forwards to an Orwellian 2020s Sweden. Plus a gaming-oriented offshoot and guests including the visual effects supervisor from Inception and Pixar veteran Paul Mendoza.
National Media Museum, Tue to 13 Nov
Bath Film Festival
Despite the city's refined status, there's nothing snobbish about this festival. Yes, it gives you previews of forthcoming big hitters such as Never Let Me Go and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest, but it's not above rounding up decent films released earlier...

Is it a revelation or a revolution? It’s both! The Revelation Perth International Film Festival is tackling the theme of “Revolution” when its 13th annual edition begins violating Australia on July 8-18. Get set for 11 days filled French zombies, Belgian cowboys, outer space outlaws, Beat poets, cat ladies, gospel musicians and other revolutionaries.
Actually, one of the main features of the festival this year is a slew of music documentaries, mostly spotlighting both American and Australian music. On the U.S. side of things there’s Wheedle’s Groove, a look at the history of Seattle funk; Rejoice and Shout, which examines gospel music’s impact on African-American culture — and vice versa; Tom Dicillo’s Doors documentary When You’re Strange; plus The Family Jams and 72 Musicians. And, from Australia, there’s Megan Simpson-Hubberman’s classic concert film The Night of the Triffids.

Dark and queer enough to catch your attention but lacking the story power to hold it, Metropia is an aesthetic in search of an author. The first animated feature from Swedish director Tarik Saleh, Metropia posits a familiar scenario -- middle-class male malaise -- in a near-future Europe made exotic by its fall into dystopian ruin. The allusions made by the opening titles to the environmental and financial crises that have ostensibly brought Europe together (the countries have been literally connected by an inter-continental subway system) are a little misleading: As they attempt to build a paranoid allegory around the monolithic potential of the European Union, Saleh and writer Fredrik Edin move further and further into the experience of a call-center employee named Roger (voiced by Vincent Gallo). Ultimately this approach shrinks the scope of a setting that seems designed for bigger things.

"True Blood" star Alexander Skarsgård has gained American heartthrob status as the show's thousand-year-old Viking vampire Alex, but even if the role is clearly make-believe, the Nordic charm is all his. Son of famed actor Stellan Skarsgård, the Stockholm-born thespian has a long and storied career in his homeland, from becoming a child actor to being named the sexiest man in Sweden circa 1999. Not to be confused with his upcoming part in Lars von Trier's highly anticipated sci-fi flick "Melancholia," Skarsgård the younger's latest project is director Tarik Saleh's highly stylized, animated sci-fi flick "Metropia."
Set in a dystopian world of the not-far-off future where the world's resources are running out and the metro system connects all of Europe, "Metropia" concerns a newly paranoid Swedish everyman Roger (voiced by Vincent Gallo) as he begins to hear a voice in his head that isn't his own. Showing up for the Tribeca Film Festival festivities, Alexander Skarsgard was spotted at a premiere, afterparty and press conference over the weekend.
The “True Blood” hunk was joined at the events by “Metropia” director Tarik Saleh and co-star Juliette Lewis.
In other news, People magazine caught up with Mr Skarsgard and got some juicy info about going on dates. He said, "It's not about what you do, but who you do it with – that's most important.”
Continuing on, the actor dished, "If you are with someone who is awesome and having a good time, you can sit at a bus station and still have fun."
Although nothing has been confirmed, Skarsgard and actress Kate Bosworth are rumored to be dating.

The Tribeca Film Festival has announced the first half of its 2010 slate, and while only one film is pure horror, two more are categorized as noir, and there's also a "gripping psychological drama" thrown in for good measure.
The popular fest, which is branching out to include an online element this year with Tribeca Film Festival Virtual (click here to learn more), runs from April 21 through May 2, 2010. If previous years are any indication, we can expect at least another handful of genre films to join those mentioned here when the balance of the schedule is revealed on March 15th.

The 2010 Tribeca Film Festival has announced its scheduled lineup -- and just like its home, New York City, its got a little bit of everything.
The Festival will kick off with the world premiere of DreamWorks' 3D "Shrek Forever After."
But then it launches into a darker realm with documentaries like Alex Gibney's latest. The Oscar-winning director ("Taxi to the Dark Side") will screen his new untitled doc on the former New York Governor Elliot Spitzer, who resigned his post in 2008 due to a sex scandal, as a work-in-progress. The film will screen as one of three special events that festival organizers announced Wednesday (Mar. 10).
The Special Events section also includes another work-in-progress screening of "The Western Front." This documentary follows its writer/director and Marine, Zachary Iscol, who returns to his battle site in Iraq's Al Anbar province. David Lean's 1965 classic "Doctor Zhivago" got a make-over for its 45th anniversary,...

Tribeca International Film Festival announced the first 34 feature films of the 2010 festival slate. “This year’s competition, the core of the Festival, represents contemporary international filmmaking at its finest, bringing together fresh voices with established storytellers. These stories will leave audiences engaged, as well as entertained, which is what our Festival is all about,” said David Kwok, Director of Programming for the Tribeca Film Festival.
Representing 8 countries, this year’s World Narrative Feature Competition will be an international film collection created by many first- and second-time directors. 7 of the films here in this section are World Premieres. Road, Movie directed by Dev Benegal will be screened in ‘Showcase’ section of the festival. The lineup is as follows:
World Narrative Feature Competition "Buried Land," directed by Geoffrey Alan Rhodes and Steven Eastwood, written by Rhodes, Eastwood and Dzenan Medanovic. Set in a war-torn town in Bosnia that attracts tourists visiting ancient pyramids.

The Tribeca Film Festival is preparing for its ninth iteration to launch next month in Manhattan, today announcing this year's competition lineups, Showcase selections and special presentations. Among the most notable, find:
· James Franco as a man attempting to rescue the woman he loves from a crime syndicate in William Vincent (formerly known as In Praise of Shadows);
· Vincent Gallo as the lead voice talent in the animated futuristic-Euronoir Metropia, also featuring Juliette Lewis, Udo Kier, Stellan Skarsgård, and Alexander Skarsgård;
· A work-in-progress screening of Oscar-winning documentarian Alex Gibney's new, untitled study of fallen New York Gov. and hooker enthusiast Eliot Spitzer;
· A 45th-anniversary screening of David Lean's Doctor Zhivago, which I guess is New Yorkier than I remember.
And dozens more selections you'll find after the jump, with more to come in the days ahead. Shrek Forever After gets the festival underway April 21.

Alex Gibney's latest documentary, a portrait of former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, who resigned his post in 2008 because of a sex scandal, will be spotlighted at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival, which runs from April 21 to May 2 in New York.
The currently untitled film from the director of the Oscar-winning "Taxi to the Dark Side," will screen as a work-in-progress as one of three special events that festival organizers unveiled today.
"I think people will be really surprised," said David Kwok, the festival's director of programming. "It doesn't just focus on the scandal. It's more comprehensive than that, looking at Eliot Spitzer as a person and at his entire career."
Also playing in the fest's Special Events section are David Lean's 1965 epic "Doctor Zhivago," marking its 45th anniversary with a new restoration that will be released by Warner Home Video, and a work-in-progress screening of the doc "The Western Front,...

Enough talk. It's time to show you something.
We first brought word of upcoming Norwegian action-comedy Norwegian Ninja (Kommandør Treholt & Ninjatroppen) back in September and we have been anxiously awaiting the first scraps of footage ever since. A revisionist history of Arne Treholt - an actual Norwegian politician and diplomat convicted of high treason and spying on behalf of the Soviet Union and Iraq in 1984 - the film asks what if Treholt was not so treasonous after all, but a deep cover double agent leading a band of Norwegian Ninja?
Norwegian Ninja is the true story of how Commander Arne Treholt and his Ninja Force saved Norway during the Cold War. In 1983 the Ninja Force discovers that the Shadow Government, who take charge in times of war and emergency, are planning a coup-d'état in peacetime. Treholt and the ninjas see only one solution: a solid can of whoop-ass!

Stockholm, Sweden -- Sundance faves "Sin Nombre" and "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" scooped the bulk of awards at the 20th Stockholm Film Festival, which wrapped up Sunday.
Mo'Nique won best actress for her powerful turn as an abusive mother in Lee Daniels' "Precious," a performance that has already put the actress on many handicappers' Oscar shortlist.
Cary Fukunaga's "Sin Nombre" picked up three of Stockholm's silver horse trophies: best actor for star Edgar Flores, best first feature film and the Fipresci International Film Critics Prize for best film.
"Now my professors will have to give me a good grade," Fukunaga joked, a reference to the fact that the feature, a story of Honduran immigrants trying to reach the U.S., was his film school graduating thesis.
But the 2009 Golden Horse for best feature film went to "Dogtooth," a surreal look at a dysfunctional family from Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos.

"Metropia", Tarik Saleh's dystopian sci-fi animated feature about mind control and corporate espionage, features the voices of Vincent Gallo, Stellan Skarsgard, Alexander Skarsgard (Stellan's son), and Juliette Lewis, and integrates familiar elements of Orwellian sci-fi into an experience that is compelling thanks to a wholly distinctive look. Deliberate and dreamlike, it's the kind of film experience that will almost certainly diminish with repeat viewings, and is further proof that the best way to secure a place in the gestalt is to tell the most engaging story possible. On that front, "Metropia" is a disappointment, but don't let that stop you from seeing it. For the moment, its style is a unique one.

There's not far to go in the dystopian future world. Things are gray, mostly made of cement and the government is definitely, absolutely watching you. These have been the trappings of most every story where mankind's ambition exceeds his grasp from "1984" to "V for Vendetta." And for some reason, it always happen in Britain. Makes you wonder, huh? The creative team behind Metropia hasn't toyed around too much with the formula, but they have moved things to Europe and delivered a detailed story in a shiny new package that's worth seeking out. With fuel resources all but diminished, Europe is connected by a massive underground transit that everyone rides to their sad little work lives every day. Roger (voiced by Vincent Gallo) is a cog in the machine who is manic, paranoid, a bit depressed and dealing with a voice in his head. His relationship with his girlfriend is failing because of his own mistrust, and...

Does anyone else find it shocking that a Swedish actor would be cast in a movie about vikings and Norse mythology? No? Didn't think so. Coming off a fantastic role in Metropia, Stellan Skarsgard has just signed on to play an unknown role in Thor. According to MovieWeb via the Swedish news rag Ystads Allehanda, Marvel didn't even want Skarsgard to read the script before he signed on the dotted line, apparently because of how secretive they want the project kept. Thor is going to be a challenge because it moves beyond the science-based superhero model that Marvel has made popular with Iron Man (and to a lesser degree The Hulk) and heads straight into the world of mythology. The project is set for a 2011 release and already has most of the main personnel in place with actor/writer/director Kenneth Branagh at the helm, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Natalie Portman as Thor's private nurse Jane...

Two films that screened at the recent cult-friendly film festival Fantastic Fest are making some noise online with positive reviews and new trailers. They're both worth a look. The first is Metropia, a dystopian conspiracy movie that has some of the coolest and most bizarre animation I've ever seen. It features the voices of Vincent Gallo and Juliette Lewis -- nobody to write home about exactly, but the story and style seems to make up for that. Check it out: Since that doesn't tell you much, I'll fill you in on a little bit of the story: set in the near future, ...

When I went to see Metropia (and reviewed it) at Fantastic Fest on Saturday night, all I knew about Alexander Skarsgard was that he had a role in the film, and that he was the son of actor Stellan Skarsgard -- I hadn't seen him in anything. Metropia director Tarik Saleh had told me earlier in the day that Alexander Skarsgard was in Shreveport shooting Straw Dogs, but would drive down here for the screening, and I thought that was awfully nice of him. I hoped the screening would have a full house so the actor wouldn't feel like his efforts were wasted.
I don't watch the TV show True Blood, and had no idea that Skarsgard had such a following of female fans. The theater was packed, and many attendees were nicely dressed women. During the Q&A, more audience members than usual were snapping photos. Admittedly, Skarsgard is very easy on the eyes.

Too bad that CG sci-fi/thriller Metropia still doesn't have a wide release deal, as I've been looking forward to it since the teaser and clip appeared a little while ago. Even though it has a quite creepy CG look of realism mixed with disproportion. The fact that Vincent Gallo voices the main character probably adds to the creep factor... At least the film has a new trailer to show for, although can't say that one does anything for me; the narration kinda kills the dark and...

It takes a lot to wow me when it comes to animation stills, especially ones conjuring yet another rainy, dreary, effing dystopia. Part of me still hopes for a vibrant comeback for traditional animation and the swathing warmth and human connection that computer animation simply cannot match, at least in my opinion. But there is a mesmerizing and bewitching appeal to the following stills, and coinciding trailer, for Metropia that, as you may have guessed, I'm a bit gaga for. Add voice/character work from Vincent Gallo, Juliette Lewis, and Stellan Skarsgård (the first two Potc) an adult rating, and years in the making to further alleviate the Philip K. Dickian tropes. Gallo voices Roger, a working stiff with no social life who rides his bike in semi-defiance of a massive underground transit system in Europe. It's 2024. As seem in the trailer, Roger suffers from a mundane voice in his head.

Some people go to Fantastic Fest to focus on horror films; me, I grab the rare opportunity to see animated movies made for grownups. I especially like animation that looks and feels a little different than the mainstream -- for example, the rotoscoped look of A Scanner Darkly. Metropia touches on some of the same themes as A Scanner Darkly, but this animated feature looks like nothing else you've seen onscreen lately.
Metropia is set in Europe in 2024, in a grim future where natural resources have dried up, financial collapse has left most people struggling, and the biggest corporation in the world is Trexx, which runs a giant Metro system (subway) all across the continent. Roger (Vincent Gallo), a Swedish call-center worker, is considered paranoid for worrying about whether Trexx, and the Metro, are involved in some sort of oppressive conspiracy. When his bike is broken and he's forced to ride the underground train,...

The 30th anniversary of Fangoria magazine will be honored at a special panel to be held at the 42nd edition of Spain’s prestigious Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, to be held October 1-12. Longtime Fango editor Tony Timpone will be attending, joined by British correspondents Alan Jones, Calum Waddell and Axelle Carolyn, as well as Italian correspondent Roberto D’Onofrio. The Fango salute will take place on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 5 p.m. in the Tramuntana Room at the Meliá Hotel.
“For the last 30 years, Fangoria has been the cornerstone of the Sitges program’s diet,” says festival director Angel Sala, “the number-one source of information to feed the bowels of the beast. Fango has been the written witness of the horror scene around the world for over three decades. Sitges can only bow and pay due respect with a celebration for the fans.”

“Metropia” is a project I’ve had on the brain ever since stumbling across its alluring poster on another website, despite the fact that the film features the voice of notorious “Brown Bunny” director Vincent Gallo. Not that there’s anything inherently wrong with Mr. Gallo, mind you, except for the fact that his face tends to get on my nerves. Personal issues aside, Tarik Saleh’s Kafka-esque tale of paranoid man’s brush with romance looks amazing, so much so that I’ve actually entertained the thoughts of selling body parts to fund an expedition to Fantastic Fest next week to catch a screening of it. Common sense, as well as an attachment to life and limb, has prevented me from embarking on such a drastic adventure. So it goes. Below are two visually appealing clips from Saleh’s promising motion picture. Beyond the aforementioned film festival, North American...

Rome -- "Lebanon," a story about Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon told almost entirely from inside a tank, was given the Venice Film Festival's top award, and Colin Firth and Ksenia Rappoport won the prizes for best actor and actress, respectively.
"Lebanon," based on the wartime experiences of Israeli director Samuel Maoz, set the Venice Lido abuzz when it premiered during the festival's second week, and it quickly became a favorite for the main prize in a lineup where political films seemed to attract the most attention.
On accepting the Golden Lion during Saturday's awards ceremony, Maoz said he dedicated the prize to war veterans worldwide.

[Special thanks to Luiz Ricardo Lopez, who, while doing some PR work at Venice, has offered to write reviews and so, our coverage begins with t(his(?)) paranoia. And an extra special thanks to Marina Antunes for her editing magic!]
Tarik Saleh, once a graffiti artist now turned filmmaker, shows us his chops inviting the viewer into an animated story which takes place in the Europe of 2024. In this future, the continent is interconnected via a subway system implemented by the Trexx Corporation. Roger, the film's protagonist, has a typical job and a "normal" life but doesn't take the metro because he believes that there is a government conspiracy which allows the government control over citizen's minds via the media. Little does he know that his fear of government surveillance is warranted and that a popular dandruff shampoo is laced with a microchip which turns human hair into an antenna that allows the government to control the public by replacing their inner voices with those of government workers.

Tarik Saleh, once a graffiti artist now turned filmmaker, shows us his chops inviting the viewer into an animated story which takes place in the Europe of 2024.
