The black hole

"Fun, Time and Space" (one of the better episode titles of 'Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain') had a good concept, better than most concepts in fact for 'Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain'. The show was very variable when it came to the potential their ideas had and none of the episodes for me rose above average (some near-wretched), but some episodes were more tolerable than remembered on rewatch and "Fun, Time and Space" is one of them fortunately.

It is still not a particularly great, or particularly good enough, episode and could have done a lot more with its concept. Which was always frustrating with 'Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain', when any potential any of the episodes had is not fully realised. But it is still watchable, one of the better episodes easily and there are a couple of things that are big problems in most of the episodes that were improved upon here, not to mention that one of the best gags of the show is here.

Am going to begin with "Fun, Time and Space's" good things. Brain is nailed, as was near-consistently the case with 'Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain'. It was great to see more of Pinky (a character who tended to be underused and bland, things that he wasn't on 'Pinky and the Brain') and in a different role play to usual, this time being the distraction from Elmyra. The fake talk show stuff was quite fun and the episode starts off quite well.

The highlight is the black hole gag, one of the funniest and most inventive gags of the show and one of the very and too few ones to be remotely amusing or show much signs of imagination. The voice acting is fine, particularly from Maurice LaMarche. Some of the animation is colourful and nicely detailed.

Generally though it lacks polish and could have had a bolder and more imaginative look, the reactions and expressions could have afforded to be wilder. The music doesn't really fit and generally grates. Although she is far worse in other episodes, Elmyra is still annoying and her negative character traits are still taken to extremes.

While the writing does have amusing moments, it could have been consistently sharper and wittier. The second half loses momentum on the whole and there is more excessive predictability than there is freshness, while the climactic moments feel anti-climactic and underdeveloped (not the first time for the show). Would have liked to have seen more of Pinky and Brain together.

In conclusion, one of the better episodes of 'Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain' but on the average side. 5/10.
