From the Press Release
On the eve of the Berlin film market, prolific independent producer Jonathan Sothcott (Elfie Hopkins, Strippers Vs Werewolves) has announced ambitious plans for a post-apocalyptic, steampunk-styled adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic horror story The Mask of the Red Death, to be directed by acclaimed British filmmaker Robert Pratten (Mindflesh, London Voodoo).
“London, 2020. As the radioactive clouds begin to fade after a devastating nuclear war, the last dregs of humanity fight to survive – drought and famine cripple this cracked, broken world. Electricity is a thing of the past. Hideous mutants stalk the night, desperately searching for food and warmth. A cold planet. A dying planet. Superstition is rife. Evil rises. We’ve just been sent the first press release, poster and synopsis for Jonathan Sothcott’s new movie, The Mask of Red Death which is an adaption of the Edgar Allan Poe short story, The Masque of the Red Death published in 1842.
The movie adaption has been undertaken before with the most prominent version being the 1964 version but Roger Corman starring Vincent Price and Hazel Court. This new $1.5m version is due for release in 2013 with Sothcott (Elfie Hopkins, Strippers Vs Werewolves) producing and British film maker Robert Pratten (Mindflesh, London Voodoo) helming the movie as Director. The marketing for this is going to take a rather new form of ‘transmedia’ and will be be integrated with a new technology called Conducttr which allows audiences to take a participatory role in the storyworld.

The UK's Jonathan Sothcott is one of those filmmakers who we swear does not sleep. Every time we turn around the man is working on something else, and now instead of just making movies, he's busy importing them across the pond!
From the Press Release
Prolific UK horror producer Jonathan Sothcott (Strippers Vs Werewolves, Elfie Hopkins) is bringing some very different genre films to the British home entertainment market in 2012 through his ‘Jonathan Sothcott Presents’ imprint with leading indie distributor 4Digital Media.

Sothcott notes, “I love shark movies, Jaws is my favourite film, and I see every one that comes out. The Film:
Sometimes the line between dreaming and waking is very fine. Last night, for instance, I had a very active dream as the Minnesota section of a Big Ten pillow fight, and wound up smacking my wife in the face about 4:00 in the morning. Not a good way to begin the day with one’s spouse. Mindflesh also moves among realities. Here taxi driver Chris Jackson (Peter Bramhill), a victim of childhood trauma, acts as a portal between this world and another more grisly one. He’s upset that “God does seem to play dice.” Moreover, he must deal with this unnamed force or face the ensuing deaths of his friends.
The film, based on the novel White Light, overuses a visual wave motif to excess. The preview characterizes the film as a “psycho-erotic thriller.” If you like rough sex with an aggressive, bloody woman, well you’ve found the right film.

Apparently this past summer's Splice isn't the only 'Cronenbergian' horror film of recent memory. I've heard the same sort of accolades afforded to director Jonathan Sothcott and his surreal feature Mindflesh. Tired of waiting for it? Just a few more months and it'll be hitting UK shelves.
Mindflesh will be released in the UK in February (no specific date available), and we've got an early look at the cover art for you below. No word yet on a Stateside release, but keep watching this space and we'll bring you the word as soon as it's available!
Synopsis:
Chris Jackson is a gateway for obsessions to pass from the mind to the physical world. To close the gateway, he must face his childhood trauma before everyone he knows is killed by extraterrestrials.

It’s always great when those inside the filmmaking biz get in touch to turn us on to some of the more interesting upcoming releases so we were delighted when prolific producer Jonathan Sothcott (Dead Cert, The Asphyx remake) gave us a heads-up regarding the UK DVD release of Robert Pratten’s indie body-horror Mindflesh.
Sothcott had this to say:
"Robert Pratten's Mindflesh is a film I dearly wish I'd produced - its an exceptionally original, striking movie in the Cronenberg style - gore, girls and endless psychological tricks. I was amazed it hadn't found a home on UK DVD and so introduced Robert to my friends at 4DigitalMedia, who released my first film Wishbaby. They now have it scheduled for an extras-packed DVD release later in the year when hopefully it can find the wide audience it richly deserves."
Adding, "Robert is an exceptionally intelligent, provocative filmmaker and...

Director: Robert Pratten.
Writer: William Scheinman, and Robert Pratten.
Originally a Scheinman horror novel "MindFlesh," delves into themes of sexual trauma, Buddhist teachings, and an alien presence in a successful attempt to jar the viewer's thinking in relation to reality. Posing the question: what would happen if your mind could bring into reality your subconscious thoughts "MindFlesh," is a mind bender and teacher all in one. Shot independently the plot and story can really only be scratched in this review.
Put simply "MindFlesh," revolves around central character Chris (Peter Bramhill) envisioning a mysterious woman who suddenly materializes, blood-soaked, in his apartment. Acting as a vessel for Chris to resolve earlier childhood trauma the woman, a Goddess, mutely enacts every desire of his mind. The Goddess has been delivered by an alien presence in order for Chris to find wholeness by facing his past.

1. One that returns after a lengthy absence.
2. One who returns after death.
Or to use another term, a vampire. We've seen a great resurgence in the genre lately, with films like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead, Against the Dark, Let the Right One In, Vampyrer (Not Like Others) among many others.. so let's hope this trend continues and they do with the vampire genre what they've done with the zombie genre. For those who missed Mindflesh (review here), it was a great little mix of psycho-sexual horror and science fiction which is why I'm looking forward to what director Robert Pratten does with The Last Revenants. We don't have much in the way of details, but we'll try getting more.
A Great Plague has eradicated all of the vampire population, save for four female vampires. They must integrate into society, and hunt as a team to survive.

Our good pal Todd over at Twitch has just given us a very generous Christmas present. Together with Caachi Films, they're streaming Robert Pratten's Cronenbergian mind-f**k, Mindflesh, in it's entirety until December 14th.
Chris Jackson is a gateway for obsessions to pass from the mind to the physical world. To close the gateway he must face his childhood trauma before everyone he knows is killed by extraterrestrials.
To find out more information about the film, or just to get prepared for what you're in for, check out the film's official website.
Thanks again Todd. It's really too much, you shouldn't have.
And if you need any convincing, you can read quietearth's review here.

Our old pal and Fantastic Fest programming guru Todd Brown over at Twitchfilm is offering a free online streaming feed of Robert Pratten's trippy Cronenbergian sci-fi horror Mindflesh.
That's pretty exciting news from our absolute favorite world cinema website. Hopefully the experiment works and we get more of this kind of thing down the road on Twitch.
Support the effort by checking it out at www.twitchfilm.net, it's the lead story on the site while streaming is available for free from Dec 12-14.

British filmmaker Robert (London Voodoo) Pratten gave Fango the heads-up that his second feature Mindflesh is now available for viewing via a number of digital formats. Most notably, it’s available on a two-dvd set, encoded in region-free Ntsc.
Mindflesh, which Pratten directed and scripted from William Scheinman’s novel White Light, is about a young man whose strange visions and obsessions begin to manifest as otherworldly beings, with plenty of grisly creature and makeup FX (by Sangeet Prabhaker). The widescreen transfer is supplemented with over 90 minutes of extras, including:
• Audio commentary by Pratten • Production diaries • Making of a Monster • Special Effects Insight • Bardo • Trailer
The movie is also available to download for on-line viewing or burning to disc; go to the official website here for all those options, and to check out more photos and info on Mindflesh.
