Produced by Michael Bay‘s Platinum Dunes, “Project Almanac” is an agreeable and entertaining teen time-travel thriller that’s equal parts Ray Bradbury and John Hughes, as our five teen leads unlock the secrets of “temporal relocation” and then trample through the delicate space-time continuum in pursuit of riches, repair and romance. Directed by Dean Israelite in his feature-length debut, the big conceit of the script and story is that what we’re seeing is all footage recorded by the film’s characters throughout their adventures. It’s a stylistic and shooting decision that adds very little and ultimately distracts...

This is not a test! Syfy's Sharknado movies may look like just campy made-for-tv fluff, but franchise star Tara Reid says there may be some kernel of truth in them. The American Pie actress told GQ recently that she believes a sharknado—a waterspout of shark-infested seawater—is at least a possibility, however distant. "You know, it actually can happen," she said. "I mean, the chances of it happening are very rare, but it can happen actually. Which is crazy. Not that it—the chances of it are, like, you [...]...

“This Is Not A Drill” message is actually a drill. A trailer for the Gerard Butler action move Olympus Has Fallen has been banned in the Us and its makers fined after a number of people complained that it was "confusing". The trailer for the movie, which depicts North Korean terrorists overthrowing the White House and taking the president hostage, featured government sirens and the words "This Is Not A Drill" and "This Is Not A Test" flash up on screen.

This is not a test. The Federal Communications Commission has proposed $1.9 million in fines for Viacom, NBCUniversal and Espn for airing a spot for Olympus Has Fallen in March 2013. The trouble with the film's advertisement, according to the FCC, is that it contained sounds reminiscent of the "Emergency Alert System," a national public warning system. The FCC says that "frivolous, casual, or other uses of Eas Tones for reasons other than their defined purpose can desensitize viewers to the tones and thereby undermine the effectiveness of the system in the event of an actual emergency."

"Me and my girlfriends gonna push on through / Riot grrrls gonna stomp on you..." singer Kathleen Hanna wails in Bikini Kill's song, "This Is Not A Test."
The feminist punk movement took American and UK culture by storm in the early 1990s. Filled with angry lyrics, self-published zines and a refreshing dose of third-wave politics, the underground revolution known as riot grrrl was -- and continues to be -- a biting voice against the patriarchal powers that be.
Two decades later, the legacy of the movement is receiving some overdue attention in the form of a book titled The Riot Grrrl Collection. Compiled by New York University senior archivist Lisa Darms, the giant survey is an ode to the grunge aesthetic of the era, revealing manifestos, love letters, flyers, collages and essays taken straight from feminist zinesters like Johanna Fateman (of Le Tigre and Men) and more.

His father was also a policeman, as are his sister, Alise Varela and brother-in-law, Will. I saw Zooey Deschanel sing before I saw her act. It was at a pre-Oscars house party in Los Angeles in 2002 or 2003. Deschanel and another actress, Samantha Shelton, had formed a duo called If All The Stars Were Pretty Babies—taken from the title of a 1926 song by Billy Rose and Fred Fisher—and were performing occasional gigs around town. That night, they were the evening’s entertainment. Dressed in vintage Flapper-ware, they sang jazz standards and chestnuts from the 20s, 30s and 40s, and, to use a word from those times, were simply beguiling. Then came Elf, and the realization—a little late on my part, perhaps—that Deschanel could act as well. Her disarming performance as Jovie is one of the main reasons that Elf is a perennial holiday favorite in my household along with the original animated version of Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas and...
