According to the Academy's press release, "those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy's membership in 2015." In case all 322 potential new members say an enthusiastic Yes, that means an injection of new blood representing about 5 percent of the Academy's current membership. In the words of Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs (as quoted in the press release), in 2015 "our branches have recognized a more diverse and inclusive list of filmmakers and artists than ever before, and we look forward to adding their creativity, ideas and experience to our organization." Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

In the lead-up to the 86th annual Academy Awards on March 2, HitFix will be bringing you the lowdown on all 24 Oscar categories with multiple entries each day. Take a few notes and bone up on the competition as we give you the edge in your office Oscar pool! For much of the year, the Best Animated Feature category was looking like a bit of a problem area: as one studio effort after another met with either an indifferent or disastrous reception, the threat of the weakest field in the award's 13-year history hovered in the air. In the end, however, things picked up: the Mouse House came through in November with a certifiable smash, and the Academy enriched the category by venturing further afield than Hollywood. As it is, it's a respectable enough contest, though a five-nominee field is beginning to look over-generous. The nominees are... "The Croods" (Chris Sanders,...

Winner of the best short film Oscar in 2009 for Toyland, Jochen Alexander Freydank is currently prepping his first feature length project. According to THR, Freydank will adapt the rom-com best-seller Macho Man for Walt Disney Germany.
The film will be based off of Moritz Netenjakob‘s novel of the same name, which tells the story of a sensitive German man who attempts to be macho in order to land a sexy Turkish girl. Friedrich Mücke (Friendship!) will star alongside Pegah Ferydoni (Turkish For Beginners). The Experiment‘s Marc Conrad will produce under his ConradFilm banner with Klaus Dohle of Erfttalfilm.
Freydank isn’t the only recent award-winning short director with the opportunity to make his way into the world of feature lengths. We reported just a few weeks ago that Fox has hired Jesus Orellana to direct the feature length adaptation of his own sci-fi short Rosa, after it went viral back in November.

Gru is a super-villain with a super-evil plan and a bunch of little, yellow, one-eyed minions at his disposal. He aims to steal the moon, and he'll stop at nothing to get it done. On the other hand, he's not the only baddie out there. For example, Vector possesses the shrink-ray that Gru requires. Mr. Perkins, meanwhile, is the boss at the Bank of Evil. And most fearsome of all? Gru's momma. But the real thorn -- or thorns -- in Gru's side are a trio of adorable little girls who bring out his unexpected gentle side and something resembling paternal instincts. Sound cute? We think so, too, and it's the set-up of Despicable Me (2010), an animated feature co-directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud. The comedy features an all-star voice ensemble. Steve Carell of The Office (TV) is Gru, while Will Arnett does the talking for Mr. Perkins, Jason Segal...

Illumination Entertainment and Universal have unleashed a new international poster for their upcoming animated movie Despicable Me.
In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon (Yes, the moon!) in Universal’s new 3-D CGI feature, “Despicable Me.”
Gru delights in all things wicked. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad.

In order to stand out from the crowd of 3D animated fare currently assaulting the box office you need to create a cast of charming characters in a world that is unique, throw in a witty script with lots of visual invention. The bar 20th Century and director and Ivce Age veteran Carlos Saldanha have to overcome has been set very high with the likes of Up and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs this year alone, and Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, released this week on Blu-ray and DVD, succeeds on many levels.
When the film was released earlier in the year we reviewed it here, and it was a positive review. The film’s cast has a great hold on the characters and the visual fizz and momentum makes for an eye popping experience. It’s a wild ride that I found a lot to like,...

I’d never been introduced to the Ice Age films until this most recent outing. Oh sure, I’d heard of them and was mildly interesting in seeing the first one, but for whatever reason I never got to it. The first did receive pretty decent reviews while the second was pretty much reviled by anyone under seven. Fox still thinks there’s an appeal (or they heard the term “Strike!”) and have decided to give us a third entry in the franchise.
And I’m sure the film will play well to kids, as well it should. It’s not exactly a terrible movie, but it’s not without it’s problems either. The biggest one in my opinion stems from how unnatural the actors seem to be at times. A couple of times I felt the actors were talking “at” each other rather than “to” each other. The...

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs + The Scrat Pack
Directed by: Carlos Saldanha, Mike Thurmeier
Cast: Ray Romano, Denis Leary, John Leguizamo, Queen Latifah, Simon Pegg
Running Time: 1 hr 35 mins
Rating: PG
Due Out: October 27, 2009
Plot: Manny the mammoth, (Romano) Sid the megatherium, (Leguizamo) and Diego the saber-toothed tiger (Leary) are back for a third adventure that has them exploring through an underground world of dinosaurs. Along the way they meet Buckminster, (Pegg), a somewhat psychotic weasel who is set on taking down a giant beast named Rudy.
Who’S It For? Because they don’t likely have an adequate grasp on the idea of quality at a single digit age, kids will enjoy the breeziness of this movie. Parents will get a good nap in, possibly dreaming about watching an earlier Ice Age movie, or hell – or even more likely, a Pixar film.

Ani shorts crowd heavy on major studios
The animated shorts that caught Oscar's eye Tuesday exemplify how the form has become a viable means for studios to develop young talent and experiment with new technology.
Of the five nominees for animated short film, three were from major studios: Pixar's "Lifted", which centers on a young alien who is learning how to abduct a human on Earth; the Walt Disney Co.'s "The Little Matchgirl", based on Hans Christian Andersen's tale about a young girl who sells matches during winter; and "No Time for Nuts", from 20th Century Fox's Blue Sky Studios, which stars "Ice Age"'s Scrat in a time-traveling journey to protect his beloved acorn.
They will compete against Mikrofilm/National Film Board of Canada's "The Danish Poet", about a poet whose creative well has run dry, and Szimplafilm/Kedd's "Maestro", in which the title character prepares for his big moment just before the curtain rises.
John Lasseter, chief creative officer at Pixar and Disney Animation Studios and the principal creative adviser at Walt Disney Imagineering, said Pixar has been making shorts for a while, and now he's bringing that focus to Disney, which bought Pixar in January 2006.
