Kim Basinger is making a comeback after a two-year hiatus with the latest Paul Haggis’ picture, Third Person. Basinger’s onscreen presence has waned in recent years with her last standout effort stretching back to 2008 in the underrated Falling Down meets Thelma and Louise-revenge flick, While She Was Out.
The production’s cracking ensemble cast also includes Liam Neeson, Olivia Wilde, Mila Kunis, Adrien Brody, Casey Affleck and James Franco. From the looks of it Haggis could be staging a return to the multiple strand narrative he successfully deployed in 2005’s Academy Award-winning Crash. Basinger will perform wifely duties for Liam Neeson’s writer and judging by the official storyline, it looks like a small role.

Game Of Thrones Kingslayer in Horror Flick
Guillermo del Toro is making sure the world stays horrified, one picture at a time, and Game of Thrones actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, the Danish actor who plays Jaime Lannister in the HBO series, will help him.
Aside from acting as HBO’s Kingslayer, Nikolaj has appeared as the star of his short-lived series New Amsterdam (Hey, I was watching that!), Kingdom of Heaven and Harrirson Ford starrer, Firewall. Now he joins actress Jessica Chastain in the upcoming Guillermo del Toro-produced horror movie, called Mama. Chastain is my new favorite actress. She was sweet, sassy and Southern in The Help and last weekend she kicked butt and took names as young Rachel Singer, one of the lead characters in The Debt. Chastain and Nikolaj are a good pairing, don’t you agree?

Originally broadcast in 1973 Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark ranks as one of the scariest made for TV movies ever, right up there with Trilogy of Terror (1975), Dark Night of the Scarecrow 1981) and The Woman in Black (1989). The news that it was being remade was met with the usual derision among fans until it was announced that Guillermo del Toro would be producing. Unlike other directors who have lent their name to half-baked projects, del Toro had a reputation for taking great care with anything he became involved with, having produced such outstanding genre films in recent years as The Orphanage (2007), While She Was Out (2008) and Splice (2009). Well the good news is that Don't Be Afraid of the...

I am consistently annoyed by Guillermo del Toro, the trade news coverage of del Toro, and the importance that movie blogs seem to afford projects with which he's attached. He's a great director -- at least when he's working on Spanish-language films (Cronos, The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth), but he's only been an average one when it comes to English-language flicks (Hellboy, Hellboy 2 and the less than mediocre Mimic and Blade II). Yet, he's allegedly one of the most sought after directors in Hollywood, despite the fact that his biggest box office success was the $82 million made by Blade II.
What's even more annoying to me is how popular he has become during these last three years, a period in which he hasn't made a single film, although his name has been attached as producer on a few stinkers like While She Was Out and the box-office failure Splice.

Ashley snubs K-Stew for another gal pal!
Ashley Greene has been straightforward about her lack of connection with the Breaking Dawn cast, and she won’t make many new friends by blowing off several Twilight milestones to go shopping with a friend!
Ashley, 24, was spotted on April 9 in West Hollywood with a buddy. While she was out, she spent time at the Grove shopping center, picking some things up at Zara. Meanwhile, she ditched several Breaking Dawn events, including festivities surrounding Kristen Stewart‘s 21st birthday bash and a big cast and crew party in Squamish.
We know Ashley isn’t best friends with K-Stew, but we wonder if she ditched her 21st birthday party or just never got an invite!

Craig here with Take Three. Today: Kim Basinger
Bay•sing•er
I think it’s time again to give Kim Basinger (remember, it's Bay-singer, not Bah-sinjahr, folks) some major credit. The lady's due. She’s gone from supporting eighties female through a love-hate (but Oscar-nabbing) nineties to her current career bloom as a character actress of some depth. Ms Basinger has always quietly impressed me. Here are three reasons why.
Take One: She loooovves purple.
Basinger’s career was birthed alongside the eighties. Feisty ladies in adventurous circumstances were her trade back then. Although through either slip-ups or fate she was often eclipsed by her male co-stars. In Never Say Never Again, The Man Who Loved Women, The Natural, Fool for Love, 9½ Weeks, No Mercy, Blind Date and Nadine she played second-fiddle female to, respectively, Connery, Reynolds, Redford, Shepard, Rourke, Gere, Willis and Bridges. These regulars of male-patterned eighties flicks...

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. Bad advice. But good trailer? You decide.
Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark is written by Guillermo Del Toro (omg Pan’s Labyrinth) and Matthew Robbins (whatever) and is a remake of the 1973 ABC TV movie.
The synopsis goes -
Sally (Bailee Madison), a lonely, introverted child, has just arrived at the 19th century mansion her father (Guy Pearce) and his girlfriend (Katie Holmes) are restoring. While exploring the sprawling estate, Sally discovers a hidden, long-undisturbed basement. Unwittingly, she unleashes a race of malevolent, dark-dwelling creatures who intend to drag her and her family down into the mansion’s bottomless depths.
The original wasn’t about a child -
But that doesn’t fit with the Del Toro formula. It’s hard not to imagine him sitting down with a blank piece of paper, writing “young child, flashlight, creature/ghost, gothic building”, and going from there.

Katie Holmes hopped out of her car yesterday and headed into La's Chateau Marmont. She's out in California once again after a short stay in NYC, where she and Suri were able to experience a little bit of Winter magic by playing in the snow. While she was out East, Katie also had time to tend to her Holmes and Yang line as Fall Fashion Week got under way. She joined her co-designer Jeanne Yang for an informal discussion that even Suri, who knows a thing or two about styling with her $850 handbag, attended. Describing their latest collection, Katie said, "The clothes are romantic but also tough, because we wanted to give a wardrobe to that smart, strong woman. We’re not making fussy clothes, but we’re fussy about the details." View 2 Photos ›...

This one kind of slipped under the radar, but Anchor Bay Entertainment has just released a Blu-Ray edition of Scott Glosserman's Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon today, December 8th. If we hadn't been searching around Amazon, we might never have discovered this low key release. While the Amazon listing doesn't offer a glimpse at the back cover art, we imagine all the special features from the DVD release were carted over for this addition as well. Oddly enough, other Anchor Bay titles that comes up as recommendations that we didn't realize had Blu-Ray editions include Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer , While She Was Out , Red Mist , The Alphabet Killer and Walled In . They're all economically priced at around $9.99, so this might be the time to upgrade!

Fans of the comedy troupe Broken Lizard won't have to wait much longer to see the group's latest film, The Slammin' Salmon. Variety reports that Anchor Bay has acquired theatrical rights and will open the film on Dec. 11. No word yet on how wide the release will be, but all of Anchor Bay's previous titles (including Spread and While She Was Out) have been fairly limited.
Broken Lizard's first film, Super Troopers, premiered at Sundance in 2001 and earned a cult following when it hit theaters a year later. I'll stop short of fawning over Justin Timberlake's recent gig as the host of Saturday Night Live. It was certainly good, but I saw someone say that it elevated him to one of the great all-time hosts. Seriously?
Anyway, what is true is that the guy's a natural performer with good comedic instincts and loads of charm. That, more than the singing, is what separates him from other boy band refugees. His film work has not been terribly convincing, and I think it's because he's trying to not be Justin Timberlake. He's better on SNL than he's ever been in a movie. Perhaps he'll make that adjustment sooner than later.
In the meantime, his indie drama The Open Road has been picked up by Anchor Bay, which, according to Variety, will release the film in theaters this summer. If you know Anchor Bay, it's from the company's home video operation.

Recently released on DVD, While She Was Out is a straight to video flick starring, of all people, Kim Basinger. With her behind the film and the lofty praise on the box, you might think you're in for something tense, original, and excellent. You would, of course, be misled. Our own Rob Hunter deftly used his literacy to dig deep into the comedy sack and make this comment: While She Was Out...Kim Basinger made a bad movie. Blam! This recycled story fails to engage or entertain. Maybe if you've never seen a horror or exploitation movie from the 70s this might seem outrageous to you. To real horror fans, this isn't anything new. In the film, Basinger plays Della, a quiet woman with an abusive husband. To help make the best Christmas possible for her two children, she heads out late one night to pick up some wrapping paper at the local mall. Close...

John Wells and Don Murphy are tying strings to their fingers for "The Forgotten."
The producers, through their respective companies John Wells Prods. and Angryfilms, have teamed to option rights to the independent comic.
Wells will produce with his company's president, Claire Polstein. Angryfilms' Susan Montford also is producing.
The comic centers on a man who, no matter what he does or whom he meets, is forgotten five minutes later. While it gives him great power and leeway as far as investigations and problem-solving, it leaves him incredibly alone. When the son of a long-lost friend is charged wrongly with murder, he uses his powers to get to the bottom of a conspiracy.
"Forgotten," published and co-created by Evan Young and Jareth Grealish, was unveiled in 2004 at the San Diego ComicCon. The duo published a four-issue series and a collectors edition. The comic is described as having the feel of...

DVD Tuesday April 28th, 2009 Battle in Seattle, 2008 Loosely based on the Wto (World Trade Organization) Ministerial Conference of 1999, Battle in Seattle creates a multiple protagonist perspective during the five days of protest within the streets of Seattle. While making his directorial debut, Stuart Townsend (actor turned director) apparently had a lot to say about the events surrounding the Wto conference, as he not only directed this film, but also wrote and produced it. For a first time director, Townsend ultimately did a good job, as the films execution worked on multiple aspects in production: from writing to directing. In fact, I believe it is the writing of Battle in Seattle that truly captures the sentiment of the film. While the Wto protest actually took place in November of 1999, Townsend’s capability to create semi fictional, yet realistic characters around a true event brings extra vulnerability to audiences, as everyone is...

However, gone is the bulky packaging, and the set has been cut down to seven discs instead of ten, both details are fantastic news. As far as differences, the main absence is a 90-minute documentary called "Star Trek: Beyond the Final Frontier" and there isn't an included booklet of any kind. However, improved menus, on the fly switching between the enhanced versions and the original effects is an impressive addition even if you only check it out once or twice. This week, home video enthusiasts have all kinds of new flicks -- fresh and rotten -- to peruse, starting with a surprising comeback by former action hero Jean-Claude Van Damme (Jcvd). Mainstream viewers can choose between a kiddie-canine comedy (Hotel for Dogs), a superficial chick flick (Bride Wars), and a poky horror remake (The Uninvited), though we'd recommend giving a pair of lesser-known, but better-reviewed films a chance (What Doesn't Kill You, Nothing But the Truth). For the daring crowd, we've got a pair of flicks that push the boundaries of taste (the Guillermo del Toro-produced While She Was Out,...

Susan Montford made her directorial debut last Christmas with the horror/thriller While She was Out. Adapted from a short story, Susan decidedly wrote the screenplay herself, making the lead character, Della, a full flesh-and-blood character even though she was a suburban housewife in her 50's - not the standard of horror movie heroines. Montford's and often nerve-wracking little movie screened in several theaters and is out on DVD April 28th. It stars Kim Basinger as Della, who proved that as she gets older, she really is trying to concentrate on awesome roles and good acting (did you see 8 Mile?) instead of just standing around being a pretty face. Susan stopped by Pretty/Scary to talk about her upcoming movies Faces of Death, Deadman and Guillermo Del Toro's upcoming At the Mountains of Madness, and more specifically, her female-helmed surival tale While She Was Out. "It's such a clear little story,...

The covers for several assorted DVDs we’ve told you about over the past few weeks have recently cropped up, and we figured we’d show them to you all in one place (i.e., below the cut). A new title has come up as well: Lost Treasure Of The Grand Canyon, a Sci Fi Channel creature feature that Anchor Bay releases May 26.
In that movie, Shannen Doherty and Michael Shanks star as two of a group of archaeological researchers who travel deep into the titular natural landmark in search of the father of Doherty’s character. There they encounter not only an ancient tribe that likes to dabble in human sacrifice, but a mythical monster that also enjoys snacking on people. With no special features announced, the disc retails for $19.97.

At the just-concluded New York City Comic-Con, Fango got a chance to speak with producer Don Murphy (pictured), who was chatting up the forthcoming Anchor Bay DVD release of his psychothriller While She Was Out. He also dropped a few tidbits about some high-profile horror projects he’s involved in.
While She Was Out, in which Kim Basinger is stalked by a quartet of deranged youths led by Lukas Hass, will hit disc April 28, Murphy tells Fango. “It’s going to include the best copy of the film you could possibly have, and there’s going to be a making-of documentary and a commentary by the director and myself.”
That director, Susan Montford (Murphy’s wife), also wrote the script, and made her feature debut with While She Was Out. “She had written a screenplay that we were going to make in 2003 about the early days of the Manson family,...

**Note: This will be at the top for a bit; new stories will appear below!** It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; it was the age of remakes -- also known as the age of foolishness; it was the epoch of bad, it was the epoch of incredible; it was the season of fright, it was the season of dumb; it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair -- and man, did we have a lot of it; we had everything before us, we had nothing before us; some flicks took us directly to heaven, others took us the other way. The year was 2008, and it was pretty memorable.

For those looking for a new holiday horror film, the recent release of While She Was Out is not a welcome Christmas present. The film stars Kim Basinger as Della Myers, an abused housewife who heads out on Christmas Eve for some last-minute shopping, only to be stalked by four youths intent on killing her. It sounds at first like a typical slasher-flick plot, but this film, written and directed by first-timer Susan Montford, does not stack up well against its slasher or holiday-horror predecessors.
After a 15-minute domestic disturbance between Della and her husband, the viewer is forced to watch Della on her monotonous mall visit, which lasts just as long and is just as boring as actual Christmas shopping. We watch our heroine wander from a non-copyrighted version of Starbucks to the lingerie shop to the card store and so on, leading one to wonder why the film...

If holiday madness has got you a little stressed, be thankful you’re not in the shoes of Della (Kim Basinger), the heroine of While She Was Out. In the film, opening in limited release today (see details at its website here) from Anchor Bay Entertainment, crowds, long lines and family unpleasantries are the least of the Yuletide pressures she confronts.
Well, Ok, family is one source of the tension, specifically her emotionally and physically abusive husband Kenneth (Craig Sheffer). Partially to escape him for a couple of hours and partially to pick up some last-minute wrapping paper, Della drives out of her home in a gated community to visit a nearby shopping mall on Christmas Eve. In the filled-to-bursting parking lot, she discovers a car taking up two spaces and lets its owner know just how she feels about it via a note on the windshield. Unfortunately, said owner...

Not that it's any of my business, but are your halls decked? Is your gay apparel donned? Good! Then you have time to go to the movies, and the Indie Spotlight is here to tell you what's playing beyond the multiplexes!
'Tis the season for limited-release pictures that are sort of indie films and sort of studio productions. For example, this weekend there's Doubt (in NY, La, Chicago, Boston, and San Francisco), The Reader (NY and La), and Che (NY and La) -- but you've heard plenty about those films elsewhere. There's also Delgo, which is a truly independent animated film -- but it's opening on 1,800 screens, so you don't need me to tell you about it here.
Our focus is the stuff that might be under the radar, which this week includes: Adam Resurrected, Dark Streets, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Timecrimes, What Doesn't Kill You, Where God Left His Shoes,...

In While She Was Out (opening in limited release today from Anchor Bay Entertainment), Kim Basinger plays Della, a housewife fending for her life against a group of murderous young men (led by Lukas Haas). Ordinarily, in a film like this, one would figure Della would be beaten, raped. Nearly killed. And ordinarily, a film like this would be directed by a male. Such is not the case for either. Della turns the tables on her assaulters and her bloody revenge is orchestrated by Susan Montford, a Scotland native making her directorial debut. Montford produced last year's actioner Shoot 'Em Up with Clive Owen and the upcoming creature feature Splice by Vincenzo Natali. ShockTillYouDrop.com caught up to Montford this week to talk about her first time in the director's seat...

It was the night before Christmas - and Della, a suburban soccer mom, was in deep doo-doo.
She pissed off four young thugs at a shopping mall and now they're chasing her, with rape and murder on their minds.
But Della, played by Kim Basinger in "While She Was Out," is resourceful. And soon these goons, led by Chuckie (Lukas Haas), are wishing they had never crossed paths with her.
And Della's abusive husband (he doesn't mind slapping his wife around while their boy-girl twins watch) is in for a big surprise.
