Egyptian Dancing
tlrogers21 December 2006
I have to give this film a low rating because the dancing is so BAD! The studio is supposed to teach ballroom but the ballroom moves they offer are pretty pitiful. The plot follows the original in some ways, but deviates from it in significant areas, due to Egyptian cultural values. The tension between the husband and wife about her dancing, the presence of a gay couple in the studio, a zany subplot involving muhagabbat (veiled women), and another subplot regarding sex and love out of wedlock, reflect current issues in Egyptian society. I heard that this film took a long time to be released due to government censorship. Maybe they cut out some of the good parts, because overall this was not a good film.

A New Twist on a Classic
richardphom1 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I will start by saying this is not as good as the original Japanese "Shall we Dance?". The production value is much lower than it's Japanese and American counterparts and the dancing is different and mostly not as good. But I like the twists and adaptations to the story lines. What it lacked in dancing was made up in drama.

Spoilers: I did like how Yousra was interested in dancing because of bordom but not necessarily guided by wanting to be with the instructor, but still that is how her husband took it. It was interesting how so many of the supporting actors were like their counterparts in the original, just shows you that there are people that look the same in all parts of the world. I really like the numerous issues they had to deal with like dancing is immoral, gender roles in Egyptian culture, corruption of women, men complaining but also admiring the beauty of women.
