Playing with Horror
This is another one of my favorite episodes of the show. I always love it whenever video games come into the horror genre which I don't see that much; this tale was obviously inspired by the anthology tale "Bishop of Battle" from the horror anthology film "Nightmares". In a way video games to actually capture part of the essence of horror as you play a game, you're usually defending yourself from danger coming all around you, this is what happens when the game becomes real, and you have to play to survive.
Like this game their playing which is like "Zombies ate my Neighbors" though in a way this episode also showed an animated adaptation TV show based on that game is possible. Basically, their blasting away all bump in the night creatures that come your way. Though the funny thing is that despite being a up to date arcade cabinet, it has graphics that look that there could be from an Atari 2600 console.
But anyway, we have two main character who are just complete slackers and worst of all gamer addicts as we not just see they play in the arcade while high school is on, let alone from morning to night. But also, when they get home and have important work to do, they instead just turn on the handhelds and play away their time.
But unfortunately, the fates don't look kindly upon this and make their gaming dreams or should I say nightmares come true by making the game real. Really like how well paced this story is giving us the video game feel as each of the monsters they deal with are like stages in a game; even like the designs of the monsters as each of them are unique and different, one that stands out is a giant guy wearing a black mask, obviously an homage to Jason Vorhees.
Even like how the two-character deal with the monsters, it's true they don't get to kick much butt but then again, it's not like they can legally purchase weapons. Also, their both not trained fighters or soldiers so it makes sense in how they deal with it, which is how any ordinary person would. One sequence is how they take out the bats which is kind of cool, though how the character can be so accurate on each baseball hit is anyone's guess.
Really like the ending which I'll just say is a double whammy. If you don't plug into reality occasionally, just like the games, reality will beat you.
Rating: 3 and a half stars.
