While her professional minder and procurator Gregor Cassell reports senile crone Hanni Haffner missing, she bugs Wilsberg in his bookshop. Accompanying her home, Wilsberg and Ekki find there a corpse: friendly colleague PI Erwin Zylla. Commissioner Springer's wheelchair-bound busybody niece Merle's computer skills help Overbeck research. *Wilsberg suspects greed motives for Gregor Cassell and Hanni's next of kin cousin Guido Haffner, who hires Alex to claim guardianship in court, successfully opposing Guido's daughter Vanessa Balders, who hired Zylla , and her husband Marcel. Next Gregor Cassell is found standing over Guido Haffner's copse, yet Hanni Gregor trusts only him. Wilsberg, Ekki and Alex must find the key in a dark family past, but time runs out.

Wilsberg finds his usual Christmas dinner party, all reported 'unavailable', involuntarily reunited. Ekki's ski invitation with study friends falls trough due to canceled train and stolen equipment. Host-cook Anna faked illness, but witnesses a bank robbery and calls Overbeck in too. Wilsberg accepts on Christmas Eve to seek Johannes, the missing boyfriend of high-pregnant Marie. Alex proudly accepted a first invitation to the prestige home party of judge Hartmut Rudolph but his equally adulterous wife Franziska is missing, allegedly kidnapped by clumsy ex-con Philipp Stern, who becomes her lover. Wilsberg and bunch must tie it all together to make sense of each case.

Ekki gave a nocturnal ride right home to snooty Emelie Boll after her graduation party, but the next morning she's reported missing and her schoolmates having (re-)posted on social media, studly classmate Dustin 'Superdustin' Jörgereit recognizes the car and hence identifies Ekki as the 'kidnapper/killer' before joining a vigilante-style juvenile search and rescue mob, which disregards the police, except cool-posing Overbeck, who soon switches to the armchair version with whizz-kid Julius von Bebber. Wilsberg investigates, fearing the MO fits at lest two abduction-murder cases in the region, while in vain-disguised Eki seeks shelter at either's home. *The Boll parents, whose rocky marriage now collapses, engage Alex as lawyer and to handle the press mob, but Peter Boll soon fires her for impertinent questions. Wilsberg and Ekki manage to join the search posse, which turns on Peter's PA, who was fired for indiscretion towards Alex, and turns out the son of dodgy police profile Hiltrud Appeldorn, who gets wounded and maintains her son's innocence, while hiding some secret involving his paraplegic father, a former engineer and cabdriver. The finale unveils several criminals.

Wilsberg gains the trust of young Nina Kröner whom he found dumped after a row, but before she can confide in him in a pub, she's murdered in the toilet, technically making him the prime suspect. *. She formerly headed the administration at PR agency Teerhagen Consulting. Ekki is also suspect, having dealt with Anti-lobbying-NGO "Lobby Watch" founder Carl Brinkhoff, the last to have rowed with Nina Kröner. Alex must file for her boss's friend Lutz Teerhagen a defamation complaint against NGO. Wilsberg and the police investigate the relations between all the above, reporter Johanna Rothenburg and Nina's lover, politician Benjamin Frehse, involved in a dubious health care privatization deal.

Prodded by his supervisor Grabowski to check out the anonymous informer who offers the tax office a 'leaks' CD on Munster socialites, Ekki hires Wilsberg. The press gets wind of it, and first publicly forthcoming fraudster, contractor Gustav Ehrenberg, hangs himself at home or is staged to have done so before giving a detailed declaration. Searching for the firm's dirty secrets, his record point the duo to his forest property, where cheap east European laborers are lodged miserably, but legally, notably from Jan Lindemann's meat factory labor subcontractor Joachim Maywald, however the Romanian foreman Kalin Abulata, first presumed a mere victim, isn't silenced but a silencing accomplice of human trafficking. Ekki finds out Grabowski was bribed to pretend the CD didn't check out, but gets his boss to sign for payment, and it helps tying the knots.
